    Sorry Dav I hit the send bottom instead of auto correct. I can understand doing a little deforestation for some civilization but critically endangering wildlife is not the way to go about it. Its natural for wildlife to live in their environment and some zoos are nice to provide that and hopefully help keep the species from extinction. As much as I hate to say this but humans are responsible. I don't call people that don't care about wildlife at all human but people that want to help preserve wildlife are human if that makes sense.

      @rickh3714 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is what happened (and is still happening right now as I explain) to New Zealand only it seems unrelentingly faster & to a greater extent in Madagascar.
      First in NZ, the arrived indigenous population burnt down small areas ( mostly on the plains I think) for growing the introduced root crop Kumara, hunting the giant Moa bird as a rich source of land based protein.
      Apart from introducing the Kiore rat & making the Moa extinct & the world's biggest ever Eagle extinct ( probably man killing) likely depredation was not nearly as bad as when 19th century Europeans/Pakeha burnt & chopped down huge areas of native Bush and forest for pastoralism.
      Large Paddocks/grass run holdings created for sheep & cattle, chopping down huge native Kauri Trees for buildings. Kauri lumber was one of the primary timbers that went into building San Francisco as well as Sydney & early Auckland. The large NZ city that has just flooded badly near it's Waitakere West Ak.rainforest, in Muriwai & Piha.
      The Kauri gum industry for Copal varnishes for the flooring industry lead to ancient swamps being dug up as well.
      The issue very much in the news right now in New Zealand (which other countries may soon have to confront), is that of exotic pine monoculture planted (often) by oil industry 'carbon guilters'.
      Pinus radiata in NZ which grow much faster in NZ than where they originated. In many NZ habitats they are unsuited ( next to native Bush & scrub where they take over through wilding pines) or on precarious slopes where they suck out minerals leaving cavities & root tunnels that allow water to erode the hillsides further.
      When the more unscrupulous
      practise of slash forestry is used, the less commercial portions of the pines are left on the hillsides. These aren't small twigs/branches but often huge length & diameter logs unprofitable to process or remove.
      When the now inevitable Cyclones pass by (or increasingly over), the huge rain dumps bring down the slash logs which create huge dams & clog rivers, estuaries & line beaches. So far mainly on NZs N.Island East coast.
      The out flowing drainage of the whole river is usually effected as has happened in the last two weeks during Cyclones Gabrielle & Hale. Massive destruction of low lying orchards, habitation & the very pastures that denuded flatland coastal shrub & forest. Much of the alluvial fertile silt mud swept out to sea or into thousands of houses.
      Industries like Manuka honey bee propagation may ensure at least some native Manuka /Kanuka shrub survive to give larger native trees a chance to take over in succession.
      NZ has protected some areas with reserves & national parks. I suspect to a much greater degree of enforcement than Madagascar has or is even capable of.
      Both countries share history of giant bird megafauna, very distinct herpetology etc. Some bright green diurnal geckos a feature of both Phelsuma/ Naultinus. NZs breed at a much slower rate due to live bearing pairs- often intermittently.
      Sanctuaries free of rats and mice have increased the chances somewhat, some expensively fenced off or others as islands in the Hauraki gulf/Northland/Cook Strait's Stephen's island where introduced mammalian predator naive Endemic frogs, lizards, birds & Tuatara are *mostly free from rodent/ cat & mustelid predation.
      I only suffered minor injuries in Cyclone Gabrielle but still intermittently isolated like many in the upper North Island due to huge roading, rail slips & floods/silting.
      One day the hills near many people may descend down dramatically if natural hydrology is tampered with, or slash is not removed. If the CC 'elephant in the room' is forever denied, or scientifically based effective mitigation postponed by our politicians.

  • @scrubjay93
    @scrubjay93 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Dave, I'm an old-skool wildlife biologist animal grabber too, but we need to come into the 21st Century and stop handling wildlife and use videos and cameras instead. If there is a disease outbreak anywhere on the island, it might not be visible and you might inadvertently spread it. This is why bat colonies are so protected now - people spread White Nose Syndrome that has already decimated vulnerable North American bat species. Chytrid fungus has been decimating frogs in the US for decades now. People kill coral by just resting or stepping on it and by swimming with sunscreen on (toxic to coral reefs). Handling is a minuscule stress, but as a role model you are passing on practices that are unsuitable for modern times when millions of people watch these videos and then try to handle every animal they find. When animals are handled, their survival is reduced but it is a cumulative effect, which means that once may not hurt them, but repeated small stresses reduce survival compared to animals not undergoing handling stress. We should be encouraging people to look at wildlife and not touch it. I am exactly like you and have always handled wildlife, but I don't think it is sustainable in the days of social media, drones, and heavy human disturbance in remaining natural areas. I think we need to reserve handling for special occasions and use disposable gloves. Covid even passed from humans to wild deer populations in the states - completely invisibly but it happened.

    Nice animals and large chameleons. No need to feed a gecko to a snake intentionally. The term invasive is meaningless about small lizards that have traveled worldwide. Madagascar has real issues, and a house gecko isn’t one of them. Furthermore, the natives may not have the western notion of invasive, like in all traditional cultures.
