    Looks amazing! I absolutely love TMP. V'Ger is one of the few ships that gives me a feeling of foreignness, of the unknown; it _feels_ alien. I remember when I was a little kid, I didn't even know there was an actual ship inside that cloud; V'Ger was like a universe of its own.
    So glad we now have an actual miniature.

      Watch Star Trek: TMP The Robert Wise Edition where the film was recut and refined with completed visuals with how it was suppose to be when he was done with the film and you’ll see the V’Ger ship approach Earth

    • @skyfire007
      @skyfire007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JurassicKaiju14 This cut was done by Robert Wise himself along with other visual specialists back in 2002 to complete the movie because when it was released in ‘79, Paramount wouldn’t let him finish it because they were already past the studio deadline and would have taken another 5 months.. A lot of incomplete visuals or scenes never got polished til Paramount got inspired by George Lucas re-done versions of the Star Wars trilogy. The TMP Wise Edition wound up being the precursor to the reworked visuals for the remastered TOS episodes not long after. Most people don’t know this version is out which was before the rise of blu-Ray when HD was still prominent. Paramount has yet to give it a blu-ray release but you can get it from Amazon it EBay. I have 2 copies. Some fans, including me are hoping Paramount is smart enough to see it re-released for its 40th anniversary in theaters coming December

    Great video and beautiful model. Star Trek The Motion Picture is my favorite Star Trek movie by a wide margin, though I totally understand why some people have a problem with it. In fact I remember being vaguely disappointed by it when I first saw it in the theater back in 1979. The movie however just gets better and better in my estimation. If the story doesn't interest you I'd recommend watching it purely as a sensory experience. The visual effects, the production design and the incredible score work on their own as pure eye & ear candy.
    If nothing else TMP is a nice change of pace from the "revenge-obsessed madman with a super-weapon/shoot-em-up" plot that we've seen in roughly half of the Trek movies. Yes, there are echoes of that in TMP and as people inevitably point out, the movie is a thematic mashup of "The Changeling", "The Doomsday Machine", The Corbomite Maneuver" and "The Immunity Syndrome", to name a few. The scale of it, though, coupled with the ambition of it and the V'Ger storyline that parallels Spock's character arc, make it a worthy variation on a theme, IMO.
    It's also nothing short of miraculous that after the success of Star Wars, that TMP ended up as being about as anti-Star Wars as you can get. In the entire movie the Enterprise fires its weapons once and that's to destroy an asteroid. Contrast that with the last few Trek movies that are Star Wars movies with a Star Trek skin, with its cute but glib lip/fan service paid to Trek iconography, but with little of the real Trek's heart, brains & courage.
    TMP is criminally under-appreciated by many modern day Trek fans and deserves a reappraisal.If you get the chance I strongly recommend watching it on the big screen when it's re-released in theaters next month.

    When I see V’Ger like that it reminds me like some tower Morgoth or Sauron would build or mace they would wield.The TMP is my favorite science fiction movie, it is one beautiful movie and very unique in the series and one that mede me search for grand cerebral sci fi movies. My dream is to see Directors Edition remastered and prepared for big screen, I’ve never seen it on big screen, but I would like to see it in great Hollywood cinema, where it belongs. I use to watch the concept art for hours while playing TMP music in background , even in moment of inspiration i made a sketch of combination of Ralph McQuaries Enterprise and V’Ger flyover (rather poor rendering).
    Thank you for sharing this model and your model collection! LLAP.

    Ah, TMP. One of the most underrated Star Trek films. I love the mystery surrounding V'ger's origins. I hate any theory which suggests it was created by the Borg, or that it was responsible for creating the Borg. It's true origin is something I wish they would explore in a future series.

    I love the MP, I saw it at the movie theater when I was a little kid and will still watch it now. I liked how it was very differnt, no big space battles, just exploring, investigating, using their intellect instead of brute force. The music for the movie was well done too.
    V'ger's ship was really cool, I liked how they showed the Enterprise next to Vger to show it's size. Before you opened the box I was hoping they put a model of the Enterprise to go along with Vger. Chuckle, it would be toooo small for this model.

    Even after watching the movie a dozen times since childhood, I had no idea what V'Ger looked like in total until The Director's Edition came out in 2001. They had a cross section of the ship on screen once it's in Earth orbit, but I couldn't really piece together the bits and pieces that appeared on screen. I love TMP, but I do have some issues with it. I think the story focuses too much on Decker and Ilia and not enough on our main Star Trek cast, and there are some slow moments in the movie, however, overall I did really like it, and I think it's one of the few movies in the franchise that captures the true essence of Star Trek. And of course, it's one of the most visually striking out of the lot. By the end of the film, I'm always left satisfied.

    Great model, apart from the join line!
    And I *LOVE* TMP!! Sad that a film that takes time to develop it's story and characters is branded "boring". I first saw it on VHS in the early 80's and, full disclosure, considered it a little 'slow'. However, in my defence I was only ten at the time; now as an adult I appreciate the subtlety & intelligence of the film. It's weird actually: People clamour for "more of a spirit of exploration" in Disco, yet TMP and "The Final Frontier" (another film I love) are pilloried, even by fans, despite those being the ones that most embrace the philosophy of the show.

    Interesting note in that magazine. The energy field being 82AUs in diameter is listed in the magazine as in the original theatrical release, but the distance in kilometers listed next to it is 300 million kilometers which is the 2AUs in diameter from the director's cut.

    I loved TMP as a kid. Love it to this day. Got to see it opening night in 1979. Loved watching Star Trek reruns on TV, and then my hopes came to fruition with TMP. This film has the best opening moments of any Trek film. Features my favorite version of the photon torpedo effect, and my favorite versions of the Enterprise and the K't'inga class Klingon battlecruiser.

    Nice detail but they missed the huge cam-wheels that open and close the maw on the front, otherwise it's a good likeness. Even though you don't see the ship in the theatrical cut it's revealed in the Director's edition. The magazine looks like it's full of detail and great images.

  • @snoortpod6462
    @snoortpod6462 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The front of the ship is the V'GER Maw, from what I recall of the movie. The Enterprise is eventually taken in through the overlapped petal-like diaphragm aperture of the Maw by tractor beam and there, comes face to face with the fictional Voyager-6, somewhere inside. It wasn't until Bob Wise sanctioned the Director's version that the solidity and symmetrical nature of the alien vessel became crystallised. As some here have said, TMP never gave the audience a clear look at it and that appears to have been what was initially intended by the film-makers, in order that it's apparent solidity was enmeshed in the mind of the audience with the amorphous exterior cloud for the ultimate mystery look.
    All in all, the actual vessel was undoubtedly highlighted latterly to induce a quick buck from out of the fan zone. I've always liked the direction Wise took for TMP. He was truly one of the Great American post WWII directors. I sometimes mentally link TMP with The Day The Earth Stood Still, where the alien emissary Klaatu with his sidekick, Gort, came to Earth to warn it's population from undertaking any off-world aggressive expansionism or risk swift and complete destruction from the Federation Of Planets he represented.

    I saw the movie at the cinema when it was first released, plus I have the theatrical version on Blu Ray and the Director's Edition on DVD. Probably one of my least favourite of the films. The endless reaction shots used as fillers for the lack of dialogue and action shots is the main killer for me. The Director's Edition does a much better job of it, although they still use most of the same reaction shots, but in different parts of the movie. My son is on the Autism Spectrum and has just discovered the Star Trek movies. He's currently in the process of creating a mash up of all the movies on his iPad using Nintendo characters which he calls Smash Trek, and it really, really highlights how much of the first film is pure reaction shots, with lots of shots of the Nintendo Characters doing nothing but looking at you while the soundtrack plays. If anyone's interested, he's still in the middle of making the first movie mash-up and has a playlist of what he's done so far here: th-cam.com/video/2NK_XcZqd-A/w-d-xo.html
    Please don't get into the comments and say horrible things to destroy him. As I mentioned, he is on the Autism Spectrum and is doing this purely for his own enjoyment using nothing but his iPad and an app called Puppet Pals, which lets him move images about on the screen with his fingers. He's planning on doing all the movies from 1 to 10 at this stage, so it's going to keep him busy for a while. I'm just blown away at how he can get the timing down so perfect with all the different scenes and special effects involved. So I am biassed, but I do prefer his take on it all, purely because it's a bit of a chuckle in places. Be nice please. He means no harm to anyone. :)

    I loved TMP when I first saw it, It’s a big Xmas movie for me. I saw it after I saw Star Wars and I loved the contrast between the two franchises. The sense of scale is perfectly communicated. And I have always enjoyed the story, even if it’s sluggish in sections.

      The ship is featured in full in this form in Robert Wise's Director's Cut released on DVD back in 2001. Sadly it has not seen a re-release since nor a Blu-ray release. The Director's Cut is better than the 1979 theatrical cut and the slow 1983 extended cut. I highly recommend checking it out.

    It would have been nice to have an Enterprise to scale included with the V'Ger model...but sadly, V'Ger is so gigantic that the Enterprise would be the size of a third of a grain of sand. Hard to get detail on something that miniscule...

      According to Star Trek Legacy, V'ger makes the Borg. If it's never retconned, launching the Voyager probes is one of the biggest historical moments in Star Trek.

      No it's not canon. It was only a theory. Many non-canon sources, such as novels and video games, have tried to tie them together, but they are non-canon. Which is a good thing because I was never satisfied with any of those connections. I have my own theories as to how V'ger relates to the Borg using only canon sources...

    Very interesting the magazine references the Klingon ships Spock "should" have seen on his journey or Spock Walk. I've often read, there was talk of having one or more of those ships become active and attack Enterprise. Which I think would have been awesome. I LOVE The Motion Picture. But feel it needed some more TOS Trek in it, like some red shirt / security deaths, and certainly some phaser fire. Not even a single phaser fired until Terrell kills the Regula One scientist in TWOK. Come on people.
