    Thanks for the review. I bought a cb300r this spring before riding one and I have enjoyed the agile, easygoing nature of the bike. Perfect for a commute and okay for a road trip when I put a rack on it. The need for speed, it has enough for me.

    I own a 3.5 months old CB300R and rode over 2000 miles. It's a sweet little thing!
    My 600 mile service (at a dealer authorized shop) included changing the oil and filter along with a basic inspection. This is exactly what the maintenance schedule calls for (P. 52-53 in the owner's manual) and nothing more.
    The brake fluid should be replaced every two years and valve clearance should only be inspected every 16,000 miles. I would think twice before going again to a dealer who charges me for unnecessary things.
    I also installed an similar looking Chinese gear indicator I bought from Aliexpress but recently removed it for two reasons:
    1. The bike lacks a proper gear location sensor so the indicator has to calculate the current gear by constantly polling the ECU for the speed and RPM. This makes the gear indicator useless whenever the clutch lever is not fully released, or in other word, useless in 80% of the cases where I need it most.
    2. I had a rare but recurring issue where the bike would hiccup immediately after releasing the clutch and pulling the throttle. It made no sense and felt like a misfire. I can't say for sure that it's related to the gear indicator but given that it happened at the exact same time when the gear indicator was busy calculating the new gear ratio and the fact that it is attached to the diagnostics port and constantly keeping the ECU busy with external queries, I felt that it was simply not worth it.
    My gas mileage is nearly identical to yours. It can do much better if you stay away from the highway but that's not an option...

    • @koofdome

      Great comment and good info thank you for sharing! I find the gear indicator great to use just because I usually glance down real quick every once in a while & once I know what gear I'm in, I can do the rest since its all sequential gearing.
      For that little hiccup/backfire lagging throttle issue, from my experience with cars (not sure how close it relates to bikes, I'm newer to bikes) check your spark plugs, air filters, vacuum lines or anything associated with fuel delivery. Also, fuel filters, vacuum lines, etc can cause stuff like that in a car. I don't think it's related to the gear indicator because it pulls suchhhh low voltage & under the front seat is an auxiliary port specifically for aftermarket attachments to be powered. If you're backfiring or getting jerky lagging throttle, that sounds like something with fuel ignition such as a spark plug or fuel delivery like fuel pumps or fuel filters clogged up. Hmmmmm, check it out at a shop let me know! What I personally think is either something related to a spark plug, or perhaps bad gas that is either running too lean or too rich. Either take it into a shop, or check your spark plug gaps, try to drain your gas tank and refill it with a different fuel, pour some fuel injector cleaner in, and check how dirty the air filter is. I suspect you have water contaminants in your fuel from a bad batch, or a spark ignition issue.
      The gas mileage at first was insane, like 83mpg! But now it has settled around 62-66mpg

      @@koofdome
      Thanks!
      I don't believe it's a mechanical problem since the bike's been running great all the time except for singular, rare events at a precise moment in time right after I shift gears and pull the throttle.
      My concern is not with the power that the gear indicator is consuming (you're absolutely right, it's insignificant) but rather with the endless commands that it's been sending to the on board computer over the diagnostics port. This keeps the computer busy with things that it wasn't meant to do on a regular basis and this might cause it to misbehave in ways that Honda didn't account for.
      Anyway, since I removed the gear indicator, I haven't experienced this hiccup but I'll update if it shows again.

      Omer Kotlicki Hmmmm, that's odd! I haven't heard of the indicator causing issues. My thoughts were a mechanical issue. Happy riding and stay safe!!

    Glad I decided to watch this video. A prime worry is how to see behind yourself without completely turning your head to the side (Dangerous at high speed!). The stock mirrors on the bike, most bikes for that matter, only display a nice view of your arms. The foldable bar-end mirrors are just the ticket to see behind while keeping your eyes on the road. And I also agree that they look rocket!
    As for the lack of a OEM gear indictor...why Honda, why?

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mirrors are an awesome mod to do! Much much better field of view and great blind spot coverage. It's like looking into a fish lense with such large FOV. Just be careful, the rounded mirrors make cars look MUCH furth away than they actually are. So always still take a quick glance behind you.
      As for gear indicator, ughhhhh i know! But eh, for $45 it's an easy and fun project to install:)

      Duke is a bit more power, but less comfort and premium. Also, Honda would be a bit more reliable than the 390 motor. A lot was refined on this bike.
      I personally love the Duke, and would get it if you plan to beat it around and not keep it for more than a year or two. Would just be a fun toy. The Cb300r is a very great commuter bike that will last many many tens of thousands of miles.

    Not related to the video but what advice do you give to someone who is thinking of buying CB 300R living in an apartment complex with roadside parking? Is it going to be easily stolen? Hot item? I live in a safe neighborhood but should I just wait until I live in an independent house?

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people own bikes and still live in apartments! You can definitely do it. Anything worth a dollar these days can be worth stealing so take your steps to prevent it.
      1) always lock the handlebars to the left when parked. This prevents it being towed away or driven away.
      2) cover it! It sounds so dumb, but statistics show when bikes are under a cover they're wayyyyy less likely to be stolen for some odd reason, even though it gives no actual security, it's a cover..
      3) buy brake locks to go on the rotors with a very loud annoying alarm if moved.
      If you take those 3 steps, you are golden my man.

    200 dollars each time?
    That doesn't sound like low maintenance

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      nahn111 you only do the 600 mile "break in" maintenance once in the bikes life. To ensure a healthy long life on that engine.
      Then after that, you just do oil changes and normal chain cleaning lube, throttle cable adjustment etc.
      Probably $100 per year spent on maintenance lol. Bikes are extremely cheap to maintain. It's only that first hit on the wallet at 600-1000 mile mark

      @@koofdome thanks for the info. I never had a motorcycle but I'm thinking of getting one, for fun rides around town.
      100 a year sounds more reasonable. :)
      What about insurance? It probably depends on the state, but is it reasonable?

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      nahn111 Yeah honestly bikes are extremely easy to own. Really all you do on them is oil changes for like $30 twice a year, and lube your chain with a $7 can of spray wax when needed lol. Or adjusting your throttle by turning a nut once in a while. Bikes are cheap to own.
      Insurance depends on state, age, credit history, accident history, etc.
      I was paying $57/month for full coverage on that 2019 300R.
      I now own a 650F and pay $152/m lol. All depends on the power of the engine, age, location.

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Monasterio Gomez No transmission noises or anything else of worry. Just a noisy kind of "raspy" sound in the chain/sprocket since even day 1. This bike as well as a lot of other 300's get that chain sound. Small displacement bikes are prone to this.

      Widezt Land It's your chain also yes? I believe it's just due to being a smaller displacement bike, they tend to have noisy sprockets/chains.
      Dealer said everything is absolutely perfect during 600 mile check up maintenance. Lubed, cleaned, tension and alignment were perfect sprocket teeth and chain were great condition no issues seen.

      koofdome I think so, the dealer said everything it’s normal, what I did was recorded a video, I sent the the video to to the service department and they sent it to Honda, Honda replace my chain for a new one for free, the sound still but now sound more “normal”. What I read was also the CB250R have the same sound, but when Honda saw the video say it’s not normal

      Azharul Chowdhury I hit a pothole deeper than an ocean this spring here in Chicago. Bent both rims and warranty covered the replacement.
      It's a small bike, potholes should be avoided on any motorcycle. General holes and bumps no problem. But those ones that make you go eeeek when you're in the car, probably will bend a rim

    Very interesting! How do you install gear indicator?

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thangkirbuaia Buaia The gear indicator just sticks on with adhesive tape anywhere you would like to put it. Then it plugs into the red accessory port right under the front seat. Honda put an accessory port there from the factory for this purpose most likely lol.
      You just need to hide the wires which takes some time and small hands to reach in the little spots through out the frame as you feed the wire to keep it hidden.

      @thangkirbuaiabuaia1812 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thangkirbuaia Buaia Hmm, I am not sure where the accessory plug is in that bike since I never have owned a Yamaha. It seems like you can stick it with the double sided tape on the right side of the display. Seems to be a big black area right there. That bike looks like it has a really tight, compact dash with not a lot of room.
      I got my indicator off Amazon. Search "yamaha fz25 gear indicator" and on Amazon it is $45.99 (for yamaha)

    • @koofdome
      @koofdome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rex Larios I didn't remove the actual gas tank, just the gas tank cover. If you have the little owner manual that came with the bike, it shows you exactly how to remove the front seat, and plastic gas tank cover. Everything is only maybe 6-10 screws, not very hard!
      The only hard part was angling the cover on just right to put it back on. And also figuring out how you want to feed the wire through the tight frame.

    Bought a CB300R new in July 2020. I must have the only engine of it's type with a faulty water pump seal leaking from new in Australia and not 1 single seal in the country for a reasonably timed warranty replacement. I have been promised a minimum of 6 weeks from the time the fault was discovered until maybe a ship will get a new seal into the country. Oh and for the 1st week nothing was done; no job card made up; no seal ordered. And if for some reason the seal is not on that ship or the ship does not arrive on time no idea what is supposed to happen. So bike sitting unrideable {safely} and nothing will get done like say putting a 10 cent sized seal on a plane to get one into the country. I cannot get over the fact there is not one single seal after who knows how many bikes with this engine type must have been sold here on anything from various 250's to CBR300R & CB300F with an engine reportedly designed to be a multi use engine world wide to aid in such things as easy parts supply due to wide use. For me the bike went from being a welcome addition to something I am sorry I bought in one week leaving me wishing I had bought any one of the several other bikes I had shortlisted for my purposes.
