Faster on a slow bike much more satisfying than slow on a fast bike!
I own a 2013 Street Triple R and an BMW S1000R. The Chassis of the BMW is fantastic and the engine ist extremely powerfull. Both bikes are very very good. The STR's handling is even better than that of the bimmer, while the chassis of the bimmer gives you a little more
confidence. On the track the power of the bimmer is helpfull but stressing on twisty roads
it's simply needless. Anyway if one bike would have to go, i would sell the bimmer. No bad bike for shure, but the engine of the STR is more than sufficent and entertaining for country roads. At least there she's definitly more fun, and that obviously not only on highway but even on the
track.Very fine review.
Thank you for this. I recently purchased a 2018 Street Triple R and hope to do a couple relaxed paced track days a year on it. On the street it is the most fantastic bike I’ve ever owned. Having never done a track day it’s nice to see some confidence inspiring talk about the bike from a pro!! Long live the Triumph Triples!!!

Awesome video. I have a 2012 Street triple r. Take it to the track twice a year, have a quick shifter on it and run dunlop Q3s. Perfect!

WOOOW Dan I rode a VFR 400 RR for over 8 years and put 44,000 miles on the clock it was a fantastic machine, I bought a cbr600F ultima light and found it as fast but it felt like a pregnant guppy between my legs and I was surprised it didn't have much more of a usable mid corner power spread as my VFR 400 RR and it did NOT handel as well as my 400 RR.
I am currently riding a VTR 10000F and it has reignited my passion for bikes, only the other day I entered a bend a little quicker than I am used to(My heart pounded like a freight train and my stomach had butterflies lol) and I applied the Brakes and scrubbed off speed, then flopped into the bend and slowly applied the throttle and the bike steered like it was on rails and catapulted out of the bend, This bike is for the seasoned biker but what a machine,"every little thing she does is magic" THE POLICE LOL.
I’ve gone down from 1000cc bikes and recently purchased a 2015 675rx that’s got all the extras, I bought it because it looked pretty and ticked all the boxes, and I could also use for work. But what a bike! I’ll be doing my first track day at snetterton soon and nice to see someone take one of these out and use it properly. Good vid 👌
Having fun is THE most important thing at a track day! 👍 No better feeling on track than overtaking someone on a litre bike shod with slick's, whilst one's riding a 600 with road tyres. As a digraced pro cyclist once said "It's not about the bike!" I'll take improving as a rider every time, over simply throwing money at more powerful machinery. Thanks for all your hard work towards helping us get better on the track!
I run a set of evos' and I love them. great grip, great stability, and great wear characteristics. I run a ninja 300 race bike, and I love every single inch of it. also Im a new sub and I love the content, and I have watched every single video. thank you for the hard work and dedication you put into your videos.

The fact that you enjoyed this track day so much on a much less powerful machine speaks volumes for those of us on similar equipment. I love taking my 2015 BMW R1200R to Phillip Island. I'm always garaged with much more powerful bikes. And thats cool. But I have just as much fun as those guys. Fantastic Vid mate
Don't get me wrong, riding a big bike fast is a rush and I will look to get back into the realm in the future. However this change of pace has been very refreshing and enjoyable.

Hi Dan, we use Vesrah RJL. pads on the GSXR-750 and will be using these pads on my Street Triple RS. Best brakes we have ever used on street and track. A good friend recommended these and glad he did! My RS started squeaking as well. We run Q3+ for tires on all our bikes, wear evenly and sticky. Never went back to the original Pirelli's.
I bought a used 2013 STR and nvr regret of a moment of it. I rode 1000ccs before but I would seriously recommend this bike to anyone. Both commuting and tracking. Never fails to give you that grin when you need it. Easy peasy.

Hi Dan, I’m back! Been years but now back on a Daytona 675 and my son is on a bike like yours. Decided not to go with a 1000 for the same reasons you described in the vid, the Daytona is just so much fun and from what my boy says about his speed he loves it. Cheers Steve.

I just swapped out an 06 Zxr for a ST RX. Quite a change. Love the character and flexibility of the Triumph. Will take an evening session at Brands before the end of the summer, it's my local track. Look so much fun!

It's so much fun Julian. If I'm honest on the bigger tracks with long straights I sometimes wish I was back on my Fireblade, but outside of that it's so so good.

I have had one since 2012. I have rode 1000s and this 675 is way more fun. Get one and swap out the rear cog for one tooth larger. You’ll be so happy.

Couldn’t agree more - power is good but poise is better - I love my 675 and had a fantastic day at Oulton yesterday upsetting litre bikes. My brakes are stock and worked perfectly so hopefully your is just down to pads. The great thing is I also commute on it and do tours with the lads - a real all rounder.
I've been riding my 2014 ST3R on the track for 4 years, and 13 track days, since it was new. It easily keeps me at mid/upper intermediate pace! The DRC tires that came on this bike when new I have stuck with and never had a slippery feel. A great all around bike for riding, road or track! However, i bought a used 2007 ZX6R for trackdays now, so the Striple gets to enjoy the roads ^_^
I recently sold a zx6r p7f extremely capable 600s wish I kept it just for track days as was fully kitted out and boy they move for a 6

Hey Dan. I too have a street triple r 2013. I recently took it on track at Snetterton for the first time for me and the bike. I found it to be really confidence inspiring and was having fun lapping bigger bikes in my group.
I too felt that the power was lacking on the straights and was tempted to get a Daytona or something quicker. But after watching this video you have made me change my mind about the bike.
Alot of guys run Metzeler M7RRs on the street and I can say myself it's a great tyre for the road and track. Looking forward in seeing more videos on the street 👍
Edit: I also felt the shuddering you described from the brakes but only whilst on track.. would like to know if changing the pads rectified the problem for you.
Hi Dan, I'm going to Snetterton soon so hopefully my feelings don't change once I get monstered on the straights there 😂Regarding the pads, I have seen some posts in various forums that some people had this issue with the stock pads, so fingers crossed 🤞
I've just had a pair of Rosso Corsa III's fitted to my 2009 Street Triple R. I also had the fuelling and suspension set up by T3 racing. I strongly recommend allowing them to do a custom map for the bike, and let them put the correct weight fork springs in for your weight and riding style. It makes a massive difference. I don't use my ST3 on the track, preferring to stick to my CBR600RR, but I agree with everything you said here, it's tons of fun!
With regard to the brakes, I suggest you clean the pistons as a sticking piston might result in juddering. If it is this, and you leave it too long it can do permanent damage to the disc, and you'll need to buy a pair of new ones.
I can see myself going to T3 in the future for a full set up on a future bike, but to be honest I'm not looking to turn this bike into a track monster. It's already very capable in stock form so I'm happy for now.
And yep, gonna give all the brake components a good clean. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hi Dan, this is probably the tenth time I watch this video, in September I took my first track course here in Italy with my 2009 Street Triple R, with the Rosso Corsa 2 after seeing this vid! I had a great time, I would have loved to scrape my knees but it'll be the next time 😅 Just a question, what pressures do you run? On the street I stay around 2,3 bar front and 2,5 bar rear. On the track I used 2,1 bar front and 1,7 bar rear, with cold tyres.
I am strongly considering the 675 Street triple this year, I have done 4 novice track days over the past 2 years, 3 full days on my cbr929 fireblade and another where I did half the day on the blade and other half on an old bandit 600. Obviously I was faster on the blade but I definitely had to concentrate a lot harder and overall was less comfy than the bandit. So if I could go to something that is in-between the 2, comfy-ish but also powerfull then that would be perfect. Shame to see you haven't made any recent videos, all the best!
If you haven't already bought a 675 - do it, perfect middle ground and capable of smoking the 929 and bandit (in the right hands/on the right track)!

Nice one Dan. Look forward to hearing more on the rosso corsa 2's. I've opted for these as first track tyres I can use on the road occasionally also in the belief that they'll be more than up to the job.
Just out of interest. At which point do you look at tyres used on the track when you think it's time for changing? Be good to hear you thoughts on this And how many days you might expect to get out of the rosso 2's for example...many thanks
I think you'll be pleased with your choice of tyre. They are very good.
Regarding how long... it depends. I've ridden on treaded race tyres until there's no tread left on one side and felt they still performed well. However, when I was slower I've ridden other tyres that felt like they went off with plenty of tread left. That's largely because I had done many days on them, so they went through many heat cycles.
I think the Corsa 2s will easily last me 5-6 track days, possibly more than that. It all depends if I feel they're starting to lose performance.
@@LifeatLean just to report I've covered 3 track days on these now and they're still going strong. Seem like a great tyre but don't know any different at this stage.
Your vids among other online material have been really useful. Managed to get the knee down first time out my system on the first track day so just been working on my technique the last 2 track days.
I found my right turns were considerably worse than left but your vid advising reasons as to why this happens has brought my right turns close on par with left now.
Will probably sign up with your riding academy as I've definately got the bug now. Thanks Dan.

Did you have enough ground clearance left on the street triple? I occasionaly ended up on the footrests on mine (or the toe depending on the foot position). Looking forward to your review of the rosso corsa 2 might put them on for the street/track bike too. :)
I was scraping my toes a lot all day, particular at Clearways (the corner in the thumbnail). However that's a lot of potential to tap elsewhere yet, especially once I get the brakes sorted, so I don't think the available lean angle is the limiting factor just yet.
Currently debating an 2020 RS versus a 2017 R6, the choice is so tough. Will be doing like 5-6 track days a year with a bit of touring. My heart says R6 but my brain is saying ST.
What exhaust did you have, why have you changed to stock? After installing arrow and new ecu software I really felt the difference, more power and torque I was really surprised though mpg decreased.
It was a Comp Werkes GP can. It was very loud and I wasn't confident at all that it would pass noise tests here. An Arrow could be on the cards in the future though.
Does the flyscreen fit to a stR 10???
What is the wind like riding the naked on track, especially on the longer straights? I bought a 2018 Speed Triple RS for the exact same reasons. It’s fantastic on the road and got all the right kit for the track. Got my first track day with it Oulton Park next month.
If I tucked down low enough I honestly didn't feel it was a problem from a physicality point of view. However, on the odd occasion where I didn't get down low enough I could definitely feel my body was scooping the air and forcing me back.
Hello. Good article. 6 feet 215 lbs newbie track rider but good street rider. Would I gain anything by spending more money on 756 R Triumph vs 675 R bike. Will be riding mostly on street with some track.
The 765 is definitely a more refined bike!
I have an 2015 MT09 with upgraded suspension and it's a hell load of fun. I've only done Cadwell park but it feels real good.
I ride it with more of a MX style body position more upright pulling on the bars than hanging off.
I have the same bike as you do, only a year newer. But I have never ridden a supersport bike (started out on a Buell XB12 SCG), and I was wondering how you transitioned from a supersport riding position to the up-right riding position? For me, getting advice from supersport riders is a bit frustrating, because some of the ergonomic advise for body position doesn't always translate. I feel it's a combo of supermoto and supersport. I am always wondering if my position when looking through a turn is good, or not, or am I trying to force something. With a supersport I can see how it's easier to stay tucked in slide side to side, but on my STR3, I feel like I have a ground hog head "popping up" and down instead of something smoother. Did it take you any time to get a feel for the bike and the different ergonomics? Can you show your body position on the bike? cheers! great vids!
It's all about your hips and bums on how you position yourself. Whatever you feel comfortable and the need to improve.
Hi Dan, do you have rear sets? I am looking for a pair on my RS. Your going to love your new bike. I don't remember saying this but I am 2sec. faster on my son's GSXR-750. Riding canyons for now until track opens
again in Southern Cal. Enjoy your new bike.
No rearsets Joseph. There's still a fair bit of potential to be found elsewhere, and like I said in the video the stock position seems to fit me really nicely.
No issues with ground clearance with those low footpegs?

Breaks are v good on the R might be floating bobbins or pads .
I Got a 2014 street triple R from almost new. Just bought a Daytona to replace it , as wanting to do more track . Problem is the street triple is good on track and road the Daytona better on track just not as good on road . Can’t decide which to keep .

How do you manage to corner hard but higher bars?? I hate that modern sloping forward sports bike seat, got my ZX-10R's seat "flattened" a bit and wow what a difference! Nice bike Dan.

Life at Lean ....like you do in the video. I thought you needed a sports bike with low bars to go knee dragging? A mate of mine has a bike like yours and he said to me that they can just about corner as quick as a regular sports bike, I find that amazing.
To be honest I think you'd need a very fast rider to notice a significant different between the Street Triple R and it's Daytona 675 cousin in terms of lap times. The STR is donning the same suspension, after all.
Now obviously all nakeds aren't made equal, but in the case of the STR it's one very capable machine and the high bars don't really change much of the outright potential.

Oddly enough, I'm considering this for my next street bike (the new Street Triple 765, Speed triple, and Monster 821 are my top three considerations) My wiffe has a Scrambler 62, and It's really only happy if you're running it like a race bike and ripping on it everywhere you go. That's why I am a little concerned about the Duc 821. I want something with good torque and something I can comfortably ride on the street and occasionally take on the track. Do you still have your R6?
I've got a monster 821 and whilst it's lumpy below 3.5k I love it though and it was fantastic round Donington park lapping at 2:00mins. Triumphs are known for being smooth but for me that equals less character. I believe he sold the R6 to get the Fireblade.
I sold the R6 in 2015, it was a fun bike though. Regarding the STR it's difficult to say if mine is good for torque. Coming from the CBR it doesn't pull as well, naturally, but compared to other 600s I'm not sure.
I considered the 821 against my 765 R, but the engine on it just isn't as good and the suspension is largely non-adjustable. The R by contrast has fully adjustable Showa suspension (or the RS has similar Ohlins). I adjusted mine from the stock 'comfort' to 'sport' settings and it really makes a big difference, giving a much more positive front-end feeling in particular. Beyond that, it's important to realize the Street Triple is still basically a naked Daytona, i.e. a sports bike. In other words: if you have any plans to take it on track, ditch the 821 idea and go for a Street Triple (or Speed, but I suspect that won't actually be better or more fun than the Street even if it has a bit more oomph - 25 hp or so though with less revs).
Dan, please use caution when riding the street Triple on the track. You’re doing something with the bike that it was not designed to do. I owned a ‘17 Yamaha FZ-10 and used it as street/track bike as well. I was extremely comfortable on it and did 7 track days in two months (between 3 separate tracks) in the upper intermediate/low advanced groups. Even with aftermarket rearsets, my left peg dug into the ground hard and unweighted both wheels while leaned over. Lowsided with no injuries. Mind you, I was hanging off the naked bike as much as humanly possible like a gorilla.
Point being is that you will quickly hit the limit of the naked bike on the track within 10 track days. The mounting points for the rearsets regardless of the actual peg position is lower than true sport bikes. Stock suspension is different than the sportbike counterparts, geometry is optimized for STREET.
You’ll still haul ass on the naked but you’ll hit its limits quick. Take Care!
I agree in some respects that this bike will have limitations, but my R model shares the same suspension as the Daytona, so in terms of the chassis it's pretty good. Only real issue I've come up against is ground clearance. That being said I'm not trying to set record laps, so I just ride to the clearance I have 👍
Life at Lean Same exact as the Daytona and bonus the Daytona rearsets bolt right up to give you the extra clearance (same mounting points...not lower than Daytona..the mounting points are same height). I currently own a since new 2010 StripleR partially Daytona converted (subframe, rear fairing, camshafts, 'Tona headers, Apex clip ons)...runs with the 600s on rails 👍😁

Life at Lean I was on a fireblade (estrella Galicia motogp replica) had an off at oulton the day before so took the whole day steady as I had a sprained wrist.
I have very much enjoyed racing my 675 Daytona, but it looks like for a variety reasons my racing days are nearing their end. I'm seriously thinking of a Tuono for a do everything play bike. The naked sportsbikes seem like a pretty reasonable retirement ride where I could come out and play at the track when I need my fix.
I'd say these types of bikes very much fit that mould, David.
The tuono is probably the most extreme of the "retirement rides". I had the factory - great bike, but both superduke and BMW are more comfortable. if you're going to be doing track days it is great, on the road the factory and also will shake your body to the core... its super stiff. if you want comfort B
Thanks for the input. Stiff is not really a issue as my suspension guy can revalve or do cartridges and a decent shock if needed. I figure swapping springs is a given. Several fast racing friends are also into supermotos now. One has the tuono and a KTM 500exc set up for SM. I'm kinda thinking of doing that and getting down to 2 or three bikes. We were at 17 for a while, 4 were street legal the rest were race bikes of one flavor or another.
If you get a factory you wont need to change springs or change shock as it comes with full ohlins. Fully adjustable.
Stu. Don't get blinded by the gold stuff. I run the 30mil cartridges in my Daytona. The front works well with attack triples to get the trail numbers up where they should be. At the back, I ditched the Ohlins TTX for a Penske. This is the second bike I have switched from a ohlins shock to Penske. It wasn't cheep but works for me. The ttx has a short service life. ( 10-12 hrs at my pace according to dave moss and few other suspension tuners I have worked with ) And it has pretty narrow range of "right" settings. With the Penske some clicks or spring adjustment things become good enough. The ohlins would need a tech for revalves so your kinda stuck without that level of support. If you have that support they can be awesome.
Did you not change the riding mode to “Track”?
It's 2014 model. The only riding mode available is your right wrist.
Hi Dan, I too ride a 2014 Street triple R on road and track. Awesome machine for both. You mentioned swapping out the brake pads for a more track focused pad. Which ones are you going to use. I've been recommended the SBS Race Sintered 627RS, any thoughts on those?
I've never used SBS before, but I've got a set of Vesrah RJL's on my CBR600rr and I love the feedback they gave me. YMMV :)
Hi bud, I've bought a set of EBC EPFA which are designed for road and track. The reason I went with EBC is because I used to use their GPFAX pads and they were phenomenal, but they are race only. Haven't used SBS RS in a long time though, so can't really help there unfortunately.
The shuddering in the lever might be that you hadn't turned your ABS off before you went out?
Hi Brett, I wasn't using the brakes anywhere near hard enough to set off the ABS I don't think. If it IS the ABS, well, that's worrying.
It kicks in quite early on my STriple, especially on the back. Turn it off next time and see if it goes away I guess

@@LifeatLean after 2 months riding it i indeed love it! Just the tank is a bit slippery so i've ordered some pads to get more grip with the knees, is felt i was turning upwards when going low in the corners
