Kiln elements build up an oxide layer when they heat up. This helps fortify the elements and protect them during subsequent firings. If you were to fire new elements with pottery inside the kiln, your elements would be competing with your ceramic for the oxygen and cause the oxide layer to be uneven, potentially causing weak points during future fires.

Aww, what a cute little ghost guy for the "ghost fire" banner... Oh wow, the stool got so much darker when it fired! And what a guy it is! Like a big big pot, with a nose, for sitting! So round... I think he looks so sweet standing guard over the plants. A short round friend who is here to help.
It doesn't matter what you make, I love your videos. TH-cam puts them at the top of my feed cuz I watch every single one of them. Your projects are always so creative. I have a bigger kiln than yours but I rarely fill it. This video has inspired me to make my own garden stools. Thanks for tackling unique and different projects for each video!
that is so kind of you to share! I think that's what I'm worried about investing in a bigger kiln-- I'd keep the smaller for when I can't fill it, and the bigger one will sit unused 360 days out of the year 🤷♀️
He's so great! This one was a journey. I picture you continuously moving him here and there, just so he gets to see all the things going on in your yard and garden through the seasons.
I started pottery because of you! Always wanted to try and when I showed your video to my husband he gave me classes as a gift! I love it so much! The chair is so cute!
The moment when you flipped it and immediately realised it wasn't dry enough - ohhhhh relatable content!!! Every potter has felt that feeling before 😭😅 I really appreciate all the wins and learns in your journey! Thanks for sharing. This stool is wonderful!
I can’t get enough of your videos! As awesome as I think it would be to pick up pottery as a hobby, I have too many as it is. I love watching passionate craftspeople though and always find something useful to apply to my crafts of choice in your videos. Thanks for all the wonderful videos you make!
One reason I love your videos is because you show the struggle & troubleshooting! Thank you for sharing these!! I've been wanting to make a stool after seeing one of the resident artists at my community art school make stools (that he put in a wood firing!). Keep on making awesome things!
I was flipping through a book with my daughters about ancient civilization and there was a cup with marks like the ones from your shredding tool. So I told my daughter that I could tell that they had a wheel to make that cup. It could've just been trimmed on a turn table, like you do here, but the lines were too parallel to have been done another way.
So cute! Love when you show how it really is, with plans you have to alter, things to fix. You just keep going with the bump and a smile. The way to go!
I really appreciate your boosting mudtools and helping them recover from Helene. It's been really rough for a lot of folks, businesses included, in the path of the storm. My house is leaning and my uncle died, both from the storm, and I think I'm still one of the luckier ones. One poor guy lost 11 family members. Anyway, thanks for helping. And maybe get yourself a paddle before your next big coil build. 😊
Love the stool! I think he should roam around :) Just getting back into clay. Your tutorials / videos are extremely helpful and inspiring. Thank you and Tschuss!
Love this video! Thank you for sharing the process, even when it gets complicated (by having to do impromptu electrical work). I'm not a potter, but I always enjoy your videos. Hope you are doing well!
I’m currently building a new studio. I think this might be my first project in the new studio. Some clay chairs have been living rent free in my head and this seems much more doable.
I love him! I really like it in both settings, and the beauty of it is that you can move him around! I love that you persevere through your constraints and challenges to make things work for you! ❤
Gorgeous, he looks wonderful next to the changing leaves and will look even better in the winter garden. I love how you're not afraid to push the size to its limits.
It came out so good! I love that you take us through how you deal with issues that arise during the process - super helpful! Yes, please do a video on making face mugs! Too cute!
Really enjoyed the video as always. If someone hasn’t mentioned already. You can heat up sections of your kiln elements with a blow torch and then manipulate them back into place more easily. Use tongs or something else to protect your hands.
Thank you for the video! i would LOVE LOVE LOVE a video on everything to do with the kiln. How to turn on, program a bisque firing , glaze firing, an explanation to “elements” really appreciated the brief dive into the kiln repair
I adore him as a stool/garden sculpture and the whimsy is everything! I want 3 in different sizes!! ❤ Seriously, leaving the comment section to research making that happen. Pure joy
He's so cute! I have tried building big but mine always collapse. What clay body do you use for these big projects? Do you have a video where you talk about it?
I’m still a beginner, but in a workshop I attended the teacher said that the key thing in coil building bigger pieces is to have clay with at least 40% grog, then it can hold the shape better. Also letting it dry a bit after adding a few coils helps too. (I found the clay with more grog to dry a bit quicker.) Some students were also advised to use crumbled paper to support any protruding parts. Hope it helps!
Nice, if you wanted to you could always build a second piece (like a pedestal) to raise it up a little. P.S. you may not be an electrician but thanks for showing us how you replaced the elements, and the info on ghost firing to oxidize them.
He's adorable! He's probably a great slug habitat, which means you can use him to thin their numbers. Turn him over in the morning and pluck 'em out and drop them in soapy water.
Can i stop holding my breath now, oh my, what a ride that was. I too love my shredding tool, early in when my pots were heavy and thick, i could trim away, however i now see that its a lazy way, for me, to throw, so now stuff is getting thinner, ive gone through a few bottoms and or walls. the original turn over was heart stopping and also getting stuck in the kiln, i like the shape pre beating with a wooden form, still looks good, great 'spark' moment for changing elements, bonus section for all kiln owners. Nice size garden for your dog and growing veggies. Like the dark colour of your cooked head, Stool, sorry were past Halloween now. great job and in proportion to the stool size the nose was perfect x
I love this! Gonna try to make a stool for my garden now. ❤ Thank you! I also just bought a kiln and your short tutorial on replacing the elements was awesome!

Great video as always. Sharing the struggles and the wins with us all, thank you. I bet the stool will end up all over the yard, as you need here and there.
Great video. Love the idea of making a stool for the garden. I so enjoy watching the project evolve, even with the issues you ran into. Makes you real. 😊
Have you ever thought of making a template of your kiln with strips of cardboard to have instead of always lifting these big projects? It could be made colapsable so storing would be easy. He turned out adorable.
@@ElsDaughter She wouldnt fire the template it would be just to help her keep her big projects within size without having to risk the project or her back multipul times to see if it fit

that's a lovely quote! I got the idea for creating a seating area in my garden from @huwrichards. Such a brilliant concept!
I feel like a cardboard replica of the interior of the kiln to slip over these projects to check sizing would be so helpful

Love this series, it’s so fun trying other people’s style of work

This is a fantastic project! Also it's so funny that you've assimilated "quite some days", the most Germglish of all phrases :)

I'm confused. Wouldn't that catch fire inside the kiln?
It seems like an octagon made out of wood or cardboard strips would work. If you can fit the hoop over the pot, it’s good.

seriously doing this... 😂

With a few modifications he would've actually made an excellent slug trap, or a hedgehog home!
For a slug trap you'd just need some small one inch openings around the base and then pop a low dish full of dark beer in there overnight. The slugs will seek out the beer and drown themselves in it (what a way to go!) and they will like it being dark and moist underneath the pot as well.
For a hedghog home you'd need a bigger opening obviously (they like longer, narrow, tube-like openings) and then stuff some straw in there.
Every time you pick up and turn the pot over it stresses me out so bad. As a fellow ceramic artist, the thought of dropping a coil pot that big really scares me. I'm amazed you managed it multiple times without ruining it

I’ve seen a lot of your videos & I want to know if you ever run a preheat?
I teach ceramics at a high school & our firing schedule is super tight & the kids often make last minute pieces. So I have a ton of experience firing leather hard & even plastic clay. My go-to program to load a ^06 kiln is load it up with the work (I’ve been putting the wetter stuff on the top shelf lately), put a 3 hour delay (I imagine the moisture slightly homogenizes in the kiln), then do a 5 to 10 hour preheat. Ramp slow, hold at peak for ~5min. This method lets me load a kiln and let it run overnight unattended. I very rarely have explosions even tho the work is sometimes very wet when it goes in.

heating elements have to be oxidized (probably at a lower temp) so that they don't burn-up at a higher temp. cute stool!

Instead of doing a traditional atachment o the nose, carve a shallow creese and fire it unattached. Then cement the nose in after all fireing is done.
