🇻🇪 The Battle for Venezuela | The Big Picture | La batalla por Venezuela

  • Venezuela is gripped by crisis. Economic collapse and political meltdown have devastated a country that boasts the world’s largest oil reserves.
    Latin America’s once ‘model democracy’ now struggles to maintain order and feed a divided people. But the seeds of its current demise were sewn a century ago, when the events of its formative years ensured that the fate of Venezuela would be written in oil.
    The Big Picture: The Battle for Venezuela examines how the exploitation of oil created the modern nation of Venezuela and, how the oil industry helped create a divided society as well as endemic inequality.
    We chart the impact of industrialisation and the flux between dictatorships and democracy, highlighting the legacies of prominent leaders to shed contextual light on the troubles afflicting Venezuela today.

      Mark Garner The government has made mistakes for sure but these shortages of some basic and food items are created by the opposition elites business men utilizing price gouging and the smuggling of goods into Colombia to create shortages in Venezuela. The state of Santarder in Colombia and it's two main cities Bugaramanga and Cucuta you can find hundreds of items made in Venezuela for sale. Many Venezuelan cross the Tachira bridge into Cucuta to buy stuff then return to Venezuela but the main stream media doesn't talk about that.

    ...the closing comments -..."there is no going back to pre-1998 Venezuela". I wonder if it is ever possible to bring any country back from 2000%/year inflation and 30$ average monthly income? I think it is simply crazy that people still argue about what happened there! To me it is obvious that whatever problems that country had with over reliance on oil, state corruption and income inequality before Chavez , when he died all those problems were ten had become ten times worst. AND that is the sad truth - placing a 30million country in the hands of socialist demagogue just does not work. It is one thing to have Swedish socialism model but that model requires a solid economic base of productive private enterprises albeit taxed to the limit. So not having any of that economic base and taking advice from Castro always leads to disaster...I wish people realize that talking populism for hours might be nice music to some poor people's ears, but will only lead them to more poverty in the end, which is exactly what happened in Venezuela!!!

    • @SandhillCrane42
      @SandhillCrane42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am lead to believe it's more complex. Failures in socialism seem to arise from their vulnerability to internal corruption coming up against severe external pressures from capitalist regimes. Capitalist nations have undercurrents of socialist corruption, like state protection of corporate interests, and the opposite is true of the opposite. The ones with the most power end up "winning". Just a thought.

    I still remember when Bush Jr was in his second term (2006), Chavez was speaking hard on how Latin America would gain its independence of the Western Colonizers. Brazil, Columbia, and Cuba as well as others supported the idea of an independent region. Latin unification and pride was on the rise, anyone on the inside knew what was going happen next. Conspiracy theory? Not likely. Fast forward, Venezuela will be up for grabs and in the background, the Chinese are making huge investments in the country. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. By the way, thank you Venezuela for helping our poor with heating oil in the USA. That was not your responsibility.

      The Venezuelan people did not have a say regarding Chavez's
      generosity to various causes. He treated Venezuela's oil
      reserves as if those were his personal property. He gave
      money to Joe Kennedy (who could afford to buy the oil
      himself) He gave oil to Cuba (for years). He gave oil to
      the Assad regime, etc.. It was not his oil to give away!

    EXACTLY WHEN WAS IT A MODEL DEMOCRACY?

    • @Jerry-br6nw
      @Jerry-br6nw ปีที่แล้ว

      It was never touted as a model democracy. It was simply something hopeful, at a time when their neighbour Colombia's version of democracy was to kill its entire third party, killings which numbered over 5000 people. Considering what passes for democracy in Latin America, yes, it was something that gave people hope. But we have seen the mistakes that were made and now it's time to learn from them.

    It matters not to a decent person whether a country is capitalist or socialist, the only thing a decent person should be concerned about, is how well the leaders and rulers of a country, help to care for the people living in their country. Furthur, that the leaders of the country, use all talent and resources of the country, for the betterment of the average common persons living standards in that country, that is the true worth of a leadership of a country.

    This monumental crisis of mega proportions has their birth with the general mentality of the Venezuelan people in governamental power.
    the people of Venezuela mentality was " we got oil, we are rich, we are better off than the rest of the world, we are more important than other people in the world", they had this very arrogant attitude until and after one Hugo Chavez and Maduro came to power.
    this exceptions of great Venezuelans like Lorenzo Mendoza, Antonio ledezma and wife, Maria Corina Machado, Daniel Ceballos and wife, Leopoldo Lopez and wife and so many others which did not to get mentioned on this writings which constitute less than 5% of the Venezuelan population.

    To all the idiots parroting "Socialism is what did this to Venezuela". There is nothing, absolutely nothing about the mistakes of Chavez and Maduro that are inherent to socialism. All you have to do to realize this is to look at two other Latin American countries, Uruguay and Argentina. One (Uruguay) is ruled by a center-left government and thriving, while the other (Argentina) is ruled by right-wing neoliberals and is in chaos.

    It is a bit surreal looking at a documentary discussing authoritarian government in Venezuela produced by a media organization owned by an authoritarian government. Well if nothing else gulf arabs do have a lot of experience with authoritarianism so media organizations based in the gulf might have some expertise with the topic. The irony of Venezuela is democracy brought with it the election of a charismatic demagogue who then proceeded to dismantle the institutional safeguards of the democratic system itself. All the while a large segment of the Venezuelan people enthusiastically supported the demagogue who would in the course of time severely impoverish them. BTW Eva Golinger and Gregory Wilpert strike me as people who will never admit that their ideas don’t work. People like them were big fans of Stalin in his day - they will never learn from history.

    It is really sad. 1989 was not only the year the people voted against austerity to stabilize their country, it was also the year that the Soviet Union Dissolved and eastern Europe countries voted FOR austerity so that they could have their current prosperity. Same start date, but two paths with two very different results. In addition, Eastern Europe didn't have Venezuela's oil reserves. The Venezuelan people totally screwed themselves and are going to pay a horrendous price. The videos on TH-cam of 6 year old children that are the same size as 2 year old children in ALL the rest of the world are as gruesome as any horror movie.

    Democracy and reelection is not the problem, the problem is the oil, greed, stupidity, neglect, the absent of wealth distribution to the lower class foreign governments and industry interferences, dominance over the oil wealth and control of the government (while all turn their heads and allowed the proliferation of corruption, anarchy and chaos)... This is the way it all started since the discovery of the oil. All the suggestions in this debate might help to a point, but none of it will make this better for the lower class.

    Maryam Nemazee : In a panel of discussion: "The Battle for Venezuela." Venezuela complex problematic situations form one to another, issue upon issue. The question is: What does the future holds for the people of Venezuela apart from gloomy and blinking future with economic dessater? No one can tell due to the on going crisis with lives and properties destructions as the people on demonstrations, expressing their civil liberty and rights to freedom of expressions, calling for democracy and for a change of leadership. But the dictator leadership continues defiant of the will of the people. What lesson can people learn from this situation? Where Is the United nations? Where is the rule of law? Politics of failures. Dead laws, the rule of no body. Getting free tax prayers mondh6

    To save you time: The Big Picture of Venezuela is a history of dictatorships, coups, inequality, corruption, civil unrest and economic crisis. Bottom line: just like any other third world country. The huge oil resource is what brings this third world country in international public's eyes.

    Does the constituent assembly not have to put its new constitution to a public referendum before it is applied? This means it doesn't matter what the constituent assembly writes, it has no power other than that which the population approves... referendum results are ALWAYS democratically legitimate (assuming the results are accurate)

    The ineptness of past administrations or their economic policies couldn't have caused such devastating socio-economic collapse. It's greed and opportunism that did it. Most of these petrodollars, in billions and billions, was simply lost to corruption.

    It is not about socialism it is about poor management. There is socialism in many countries that are doing well. You can be benevolent and still have great management. America had its biggest socialist democracy during and after WWII and its greatest growth during that same time. Every social policy established that still works in America happened in the early 1900s and during their growth. Socialism in Venezuela and other nations where it didn't work were run by corrupt leaders. America isn't without its corruption but it was able to stay clear of possible dictatorship which could make all the decisions, until now.

    In Venezuela, when money from OIL was flowing, they enjoyed the best of socialism, they tried to become an ideal for all leftist around the world, they got that tag of ideal socialist state and enjoyed the further appreciation in Oil prices, but during those golden days, they never transformed their economy from oil based to other sectors, and this is one of the most pathetic face of communism. The downfall was marked on the walls of Venezuela........

    With a population of 30 million it would be possible from oil revenue alone to give every individual 1 million dollars each and still have money left over for Infrastructure. Where has all the money gone? Does the bank for international settlements work hand in glove with dictatorial regimes? I wonder!***
