I'm Venezuelan, I left my country in 2004. In that year it was a "socialist paradise". Many people like that woman in the interview called us trash traitor because we didn't like Hugo Chávez way of ruling. I was humiliated by people like her because I was anti-revolution. People like her voted for Chávez once, twice, many times. Everybody knew Chávez was anti-democratic and was destroying the economy. @Michael Maya Yep, and now is Maduro forced to sell country to Chinese and Russian because the country have so much depth and they can not import not even meds and food...
@Michael Maya The rise in GDP was just due to oil and government spending, not investment and private consumption. That's why when the oil prices fell, so did the GDP. Extreme poverty was still at 30% despite Chavez social programs and high oil prices. Now, it is 90% Interestingly, crime skyrocketed during Chavez years and high oil prices

Rahim Before Chavez, the economy was doing just fine, under Capitalism. Then, Chavez got elected and started arresting his opponents and driving money out of the country. When Chavez's gov't confiscated businesses and property, it made other business leave. Chavez then gave those confiscated business to his corrupt cronies, who drove them into the ground. Keep in mind, Chavez was trained to drive a tank, and Maduro drove a bus; they know nothing about running an economy.

Friends of ours in southern Chile brought from Venezuela almost an entire family to help them with their family business. They paid for the family - a mother with a daughter and young baby, and later the husband, to stay in Santiago and their internal transportation to get south. They gave them jobs and food and a place to live. Late last year they let them all go because they were stealing money from the business. Almost the whole time there they complained about how bad their lives were. Many people are leaving because they knew neighboring countries were going to tighten border restrictions. Many have stayed and do not want to leave.
Thank you for making this video. Really well done. These are regular, middle class people that were going about their daily lives and unaware of the economic calamity that was to befall them. One cant help but feel empathy and wonder how to help? This is happening in our world right now.
