Everything was working fine until all riches became poor, most nationalized went bankrupt (even their oil company) and the debt which continued to grow. Incredibly sad. When I was kid in the late 70s early 80s my father had businesses in Vzla. He was an importer of all kinds of goods from all over the world to the then duty-free Island of Margarita.. That was possible because at the time Venezuela was incredibly prosperous and any Venezuelan had access to everything. Most Venezuelans with an education and a job had an above average standard of living compared to other South American countries and could pretty much afford the best of the best. (it wasn't unusual for Venezuelans to travel to Miami or New York on weekends. If you were at the very top of the financial ladder then Paris was your destination...) This is not a joke, I'm sure anybody familiar with that period can fully attest to this.. When I went on vacation to the Island my father would frequently fly to Caracas for other business related meetings. I remember it as such a vibrant, beautiful city with so much going on.. Everything was amazing; first class hotels, restaurants, services, etc.. In a city within a 20 minutes drive from the Caribbean Coast... where you would find one 5 star hotel after another, Meliá, Sheraton, as well as private yatch clubs... luxury Venezuelan Resorts such as the "Conahotu" properties (I think that's how It was spelled) And as I said, this wasn't necessarily exclusive to the rich, Venezuela was very prosperous and yes.. you could also see the "favelas" style poverty, but still most Venezuelans had access to plenty of jobs, education, credit advantages, and enjoyed a very high standard of living. To see what has become of what it once was a great country is heart breaking. Also because on top of everything I remember the Venezuelan people as warm, welcoming, hospitable and friendly. I could go on... I just wish Venezuelans a full recovery from this nightmare. Venezuela is still a rich country. With oil reserves capable of making it the 3rd or fourth biggest Oil Producer on planet Earth. All of this went through hell thanks to the horrible mismanagement based on the dictatorial agenda and ideology of Chavez regime. Venezuelans were lied to and robbed of their patrimony... No, Venezuela was not capitalist. It wasn't 'pretending' to be socialist. Such a silly argument. It was socialist. The state redistributed the means of private production (which is what happens in socialism, not capitalism) and they stole private sector property and funds and to give to non-producers. It was socialism. They just eventually ran out of the money of the producer class. This is the end result of socialism. Wealth does not grow on trees and eventually if you keep taking from those who produce to give to those who do not produce, you run out of wealth. The laws of economics are clear as to why socialism always fails eventually in every country it is tried. The people who did not produce had no right to the wealth others worked hard for, so they had to use mob justice to force the state to take it. This is why useless eaters love socialism it allows them to use mob tyranny to take from those they can't compete against in a fee system. In nature, natural selection would have weeded them out of the human gene pool for not being able to be strong enough to compete. They know this. This is why they want a system like socialism that doesn't reward us like nature rewards the strong, but instead punishes the strong and rewards the weak. This is why socialism always has and always will fail and why the weak love it and the strong hate it. It is tyranny of the weak.

It is what happened to Venezuela. Chavez nationalized all the big corporations and transformed smaller companies into cooperatives. Then, he increased taxes to pay for his "Bolivarian reforms". Everything was working fine until all riches became poor, most nationalized went bankrupt (even their oil company) and the debt which continued to grow. On the other hand, many other social actions part of the "Bolivarian reforms", such as price ceilings on food, medical drugs and other basic goods, created huge shortages, which is why Venezuelans now have problems having those goods. @@AlexHand

Incredibly sad. When I was kid in the late 70s early 80s my father had businesses in Vzla. He was an importer of all kinds of goods from all over the world to the then duty-free Island of Margarita.. That was possible because at the time Venezuela was incredibly prosperous and any Venezuelan had access to everything. Most Venezuelans with an education and a job had an above average standard of living compared to other South American countries and could pretty much afford the best of the best. (it wasn't unusual for Venezuelans to travel to Miami or New York on weekends. If you were at the very top of the financial ladder then Paris was your destination...) This is not a joke, I'm sure anybody familiar with that period can fully attest to this..
When I went on vacation to the Island my father would frequently fly to Caracas for other business related meetings. I remember it as such a vibrant, beautiful city with so much going on.. Everything was amazing; first class hotels, restaurants, services, etc.. In a city within a 20 minutes drive from the Caribbean Coast... where you would find one 5 star hotel after another, Meliá, Sheraton, as well as private yatch clubs... luxury Venezuelan Resorts such as the "Conahotu" properties (I think that's how It was spelled) And as I said, this wasn't necessarily exclusive to the rich, Venezuela was very prosperous and yes.. you could also see the "favelas" style poverty, but still most Venezuelans had access to plenty of jobs, education, credit advantages, and enjoyed a very high standard of living.
To see what has become of what it once was a great country is heart breaking. Also because on top of everything I remember the Venezuelan people as warm, welcoming, hospitable and friendly.
I could go on... I just wish Venezuelans a full recovery from this nightmare. Venezuela is still a rich country. With oil reserves capable of making it the 3rd or fourth biggest Oil Producer on planet Earth. All of this went through hell thanks to the horrible mismanagement based on the dictatorial agenda and ideology of Chavez regime. Venezuelans were lied to and robbed of their patrimony... Politically they never really needed a Socialist reform... Dictators are narcissistic liars, who stir up and prey on the ignorant... but that's another conversation. My prayers are with Venezuela.

Dang. I lived in Venezuela for a couple years back in 2000. It's so crazy to see such a previously prosperous and educated country brought to its knees and lower. Most of the people I knew have fled to other countries.
