Thanks Doc for another insightful tech tip. To keep me busy during Covid I decided to go old school so I designed a jockey shift with the clutch attached to the shifter (2008 FLSTC). As you mentioned without the clutch switch you can only start the bike in neutral. Originally I thought I would keep the setup for a month or 2. However I got attached to this suicidal setup and still riding with the jockey shifter/clutch arrangement-nightmare in stop start traffic and very challenging trying to manoeuvre a 180° turn from a stationary position.
I'll keep my hydraulic. I put a Mueller slave colder on it and it pulls real smoothly and with less pull from your hand. This is good info for those that want to make the change.
Oh, man I could have used this video 6 years ago! I have a 2015 Road King and I actually switched TO a hydraulic clutch, and afterwards had the following issues: couldn't start in gear, gear/RPM display didn't show what gear I was in, and the cruise control no longer worked (would turn on, but couldn't set speed). I asked the parts counter guys a a couple of different dealerships, and they couldn't help. The guy who installed my bars couldn't figure it out, so I just accepted it. Then, finally, about a year ago I asked another parts counter guy at Oakland HD and he told me about the different switch! Once I installed it, all of my issues were solved. I just gave away that cable switch pack... should have sold it.
I like the hydraulic clutch on my 2019 CVOSG, I just wish there was some sort of kit I can install which would make it easier to replace the DOT 4 every 2 years.(ie. moving the exhaust system). Great job and thank you Doc.
Leave the clutch mechanism cover off like I did. Its purpose is esthetics only. I like my bike to have everything on it which serves its purpose. I don’t like fake anything.
All I gotta say Hydraulic is the best thing ever. I can’t believe the newer models went back to cable….. Hydraulic never gives problems. I ride a 2019 Street glide that Dock worked on it once. And I never had a problem with my so soft hydraulic clutch.
I actually like the hydraulic clutch on both my 2015 Street Glide & my 2020 CVO Street Glide, I find that the hydraulic clutch much more tolerant of temperature changes & extremes and is unaffected by moisture than cable clutch cables I use DOT 6.1 brake fluid since it has more temperature resistance than DOT 3 or 4…
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Doc, I live in Southern Utah where there are many steep downgrades, one night and I looked down for a moment and saw the single large disc on my 1999 Buell glowing orange int the heavy braking zones & after had trouble getting proper lever afterwards, so on a suggestion I drained some ugly DOT 3 and put in DOT 5.1 which I replace at least once per year. I careful to do preventative measures such as changing brake rotors & pads every 2-3 years plus brake fluid 1-2 times per year. I never had to change or rebuild a master cylinder tho…
Doc, you need to find a product called DeOxIt. It is a spray that will clean and make those neutral safety switches in those switch packs work again and will keep them working. Save a $250 replacement cost
I have a question for ya doc. I have a 2019 street glide special. Bought it new and it now has 113,000 miles on her. I don't hot rod it. It doesn't burn oil. No leaks. No drips. It's a solid running bike. My question is should I be looking into an engine rebuild or any other thing you suggest I should have checked? Thanks and awaiting your response and next video.
You must have taken really good care of this bike👍 . You should have your own channel with helping tips to achieve this mileage. Refreshing to see a success story instead of all the complaints. A few points: if you have been running the stock header, the CAT is probably clogging up. Replace. Including new O2 sensors. I am sure you have periodicity checked cam chain tensioners. Possibly new coil with plug wires….Doc
I love my hydralic setup. I have a 2014 Limited with just over 115k miles on it. I have had the bike since new andd have ridden on all sorts of roads and hills. Never had a single problem out of the hydraulic clutch setup. Ir still has the original clutch plates and so on. I guess I am lucky but I figure that since the hydraulic setup adjusts itself for clutch wear then that might have helped the clutch plates etc. last so long.
Doc, What's the best way to lower the clutch pull on my 2024 Street Glide? Do you have preferred lubrication for the lever pivot and cable? The industry (Honda, Yamaha and KTM) has a lot of activity in the e-clutch arena right now. I sure liked using the quickshifter on my KTM 1290 Super Duke GT for most of the up-shifts. Maybe something will filter over on our new bikes? Thank you for the effort that goes into making and sharing these tech tips. Philip
Lubricant choice is like oil choice. So many to choose. At our shop we use Molly 44 for pins and levers. As for your KTM quick shift. Check into the SE products. I believe a Quick Shift is coming from the Race team….Doc
Hey Doc :) Since your on the subject, a while ago I asked you about getting a smaller length upper clutch cable for my 2019 Sport Glide and how and where to measure the one that is currently in use. You told me to keep watching. Is a video in the works? Thanks
I hear this a lot nobody likes hydraulic! I have a 16SlimS & a 18Limited both have hydraulics no complaints. But I got to admit that for some reason I like the way it feels better on my on FLSS then my LIMITED?🤷🏻♂️ only issue is that its pricey to flush out every 2 year. Thanks for the video Doc…
Thanks Doc for the information. I'm seriously considering switching to a cable clutch on my 2017 street glide for various reasons. What's the cost estimate?
I've really been wanting to change my 2016 back to a cable. But judging from that extensive list of parts you have this conversion looks expensive. Can you give us a ballpark price? Thank you for another great video.
@@petestransit to me, the hydraulic clutch was smoother. Grey zone was closer to the grip and the biggest thing is having to adjust it every 5000 miles with that Rinky dink plastic piece of crap sucks.
Can you put the parts list in the description? Also, 2016 FLT hydraulic to cable, with 14 Road King switch, do you retain cruise control, or do you lose it? Didn't understand what you said there.
so touring models with hydraulic clutch that want to convert to cable just have to live with no functioning switch , which just means you'll have to start in neutral? please confirm thanks
So getting the road king switch is just to have the function of starting the bike in gear, correct? And if we don’t want that function we don’t need that switch kit, right? The switch on my 2018 road glide stopped working months ago, and I just work around it…. I don’t know what I need to do to fix it but it’s not high in the list right now 😂
Wow, this is a quiet expensive change from hydraulic to cable. And of course from the electrical side quiet tricky. Don't see the advantage. A well maintained hydraulic works well for thausend kilometers and also looking for spare parts in case of a failure, the original makes live easier. Best regards from Austria. Wolfgang
I have a hydraulic clutch All I did is change the slave cylinder to a trask And flush the fluid every 2 years Not sure why Harley went back to a cable I believe it was a cost issue ??
great video i never start my bikes in gear not sure why just dont.
Absolutely prefer hydraulic over cable!
I had a hydraulic clutch put on my 2000 RKC. I absolutely love it
Right to the point,,no BS for an hour...nice

I might be the only one here but is there a way to go from cable to hydraulic?
No your not the only one, I like the hydraulic way better
Yes HD offers a complete kit in their Accessories catalog. AIM is a great company to make the conversion with….Doc

Doc can you put this on yourself ? Would it work on a 2019 tri glide ultra?
I would think so. I personally have not converted a 2019 Tri glide ultra….Doc
I have already converted the bike to a cable clutch. But it won’t start in gear.
Could you use a part from a 2021?
Hey Doc, the 2024s radiator hose gets in the way of to slide up the clutch adjustment cover. got any idea?
I don’t like it either but there is limited real estate on where to put it…..Doc
I had a 2006 wide glide with a cable. Now i got a 2017 limited ultra with hydraulic. I really cant tell any difference. Thats my opinion.
👍

Can a manual reverse be installed on 2014 Tri Glide in place of electric reverse assist ?
Look to Baker to answer that question….Doc
How can I get a copy of that parts list?
I was hoping you could pause the video…Doc
I did pause the video!! Once I enlarged the video on the parts list. Part numbers get bury!
I’ll figure it out!! Thanks Doc

It’s a “feel” thing. Like leather vs vinyl….Doc

I like my 2002 Road King. Starts in gear with the lever pulled in or not. Not a bike for idiots.
😳…..Doc
Love my hyd clutch, all HD had to do was put in a better slave cylinder rather than going back in technology to a cable 🤦♂️
Right? A simple consultation with Brembo?
I have a hydraulic clutch
All I did is change the slave cylinder to a trask
And flush the fluid every 2 years
Not sure why Harley went back to a cable
I believe it was a cost issue ??
Thanks for posting. I did not know Trask offered a slave cylinder….Doc
Okay….why?
Doc needs a new microphone
Low budget ( my own money)…..Doc
Never understood why the hydraulic system wasn't designed to make it easier to pull. The function of hydraulics is to multiply force.
