It’s really interesting seeing how developers react to speed runs. And how much they know you can do while testing.
Idk it's not that crazy that the people who work with the programmers know what the code does after testing it. They've done so much corner cases.

The best play testers are speedrunners, they will find any glitch that helps them.
Yeah, but it doesn't matter, because any glitch they find that the normal player won't find, won't be patched out, for the sake of speedrunning. They only patch out stuff that a normal player might stumble upon and would ruin their game in some way.
Though there are exceptions to that too, where devs just try to fix anything that makes it easier for the speedrunners, mostly probably because of multiplayer.
Glitching is not speedrunning a game 🤷🏽♂️
You can’t call it a speedrun when you use glitches, because that is not how you supposed to play the game. So, you can’t call glitchers, speedrunners 🙌🏼
A speedrun is, playing a game as fast as possible WITHOUT glitches.
@@Hermanos1995 what you are referring to is called a glitchless run, this type of run is called an any% run, meaning get to a preset point in the game (typically the end credits).
an any% runs goal is to get to that point as fast as possible completing as much or as little of the game as you need to et there.
play testing isn't only about finding glitches though, it's about seeing what the general public likes/dislikes about the game so it can be tweaked. Since speedrunners usually play the game differently from most people it's not actually very generalizable feedback.

For me. The forest is still one of the best, if not THE best survival game out there. Even in the earliest stages of early access it vent above and beyond other games.

nahh, this speedrun was only jumping and figuring the best routes. Imo the any% is way more interesting cus it makes me think about "how tf did anyone figure this out? somebody must have accidentally jump striked in this corner to glitch out or someshit" its so much more interesting to see how they use different glitches to save time and some glitches are hard af and in some games they need to do multiple hard glitches where run dies if failed for them to do the WR.
@@priima7464 It's still a playthrough run, not a glitched one. It's only those things, because that's all that was required to go as fast as possible
Sure but why the hell even bother having the devs watch a playthrough speedrun? They have played through these places hundreds of times the same way so this entire commentating just consisted of "yup, thats the fastest route".
A glitched one would involve much more in-game knowledge, mechanics and memorization and would recieve a much more hilarious reaction from the devs. watching the runner do things the devs have never seen.
This game was great, and with the second one coming this week, some great timing!

It would have been hilarious if there was elevator music on the way to the second artifact and out of the facility, imagine!
The only major problem with this speedrun is the fact that he spent time on making an upgraded spear. In the forest, the basic spear does the same ammount of damage as the upgraded one when thrown. So he could have saved a lot on time not getting the bones and not crafting the upgraded spear.
Maybe the throwing/pickup parameters are way better with the upgraded spear?
@@cupofmozzarella Nope. They are both the same. Except for the base damage being higher on the upgraded one compared to the basic spear ( when you don't throw it )

I'd assume during a speed run the mandatory luls like climbing a rope or a cutscene you can't skip is a nice break from relentlessly trying to finish the game as fast as possible
I've played this game for years and this is the first time I've seen the ending, lol.
I'm super excited to see what the devs have in store for the future of SOTF. Having played and completed SOTF, it's definitely lacking a few things that would vastly improve the game (including things that were in the 1st game but are absent now). It is a fun experience to see the new island, explore new caves, and discover the new lore, but The Forest is still the better game of the two at the moment.

It's interesting to see the perspective of an indie developer. You can tell the difference vs a triple A developer. Indie developers test their own games so there's no oversight. They know their game engine and the limits and what you can do and abuse.
They are using unity. Both the forest and sons of the forest, not their own engine.

Spears having highest damage. As spears are historically the best (and most used) handcrafted weapon, I'm surprised someone made it in game for real. When humankind invented sharp sticks, lions and bears became our snack (no joke), and we boosted to the top of food chain. Something apes still can't figure out.

didnt farket say that the throw damage of the weak spear is the same as the upgraded one? Isnt that a time loss to craft it?
yes crafting the upgrade, is slower but all the current records in glitchless are using the weak spear

Speedrunners have to play a game quite a bit to get their times down though. And a lot will play through it normally once first.
It's funny because the diagonal movement thing is such a beginner gamedev mistake. :D

It took me 7 minutes to realize this wasnt the forest 2
Hearing the devs react to people literally speeding through the hours of work they put in is a bit of a double edged sword, because yes in this run they have gone through in 10 seconds but to get to that stage the speedrunner probably experienced the game more and longer than most other players. So yes, whilst what they are watching is quick, the time the speedrunner has spent to get to that stage takes literal days.
Feel like i've got tunnel vision watching this game.

In the patch notes that fixed the glitch of being able to clip through doors with sticks they put (sorry speedrunners)

Both bug and bugless speed runs require lots of effort and communication with other members of the speed run community. Neither are soulless, they are just different methods with different goals.

First weeks easy as it's jus cannibals after that it's mutants
They leaked something in 6:17 xD they said theres no animations but there was no animations either way even in inv so that means they leaked animations for sons of the forest
If you think about it, getting to the lab as quickly as possible has a higher chance of surviving since you have modern luxuries everywhere such couches, temperature control, shelter, vending machines.
