Fallout: New Vegas was released way back in 2010 and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. You play as a courier who works for the Mojave Express. On their way to delivered a mysterious item called the Platinum Chip, the courier is ambushed and shot by a man named Benny, and the game begins with the courier trying to once again make their way to New Vegas to confront Benny and retrieve the mysterious item.
Fallout: New Vegas has gone on to become one of the most beloved game's in the Fallout series. It recently arrived on Xbox Game Pass and can be played on PC or in full backwards compatibility on Xbox One or Xbox Series X.

Imagine patching a guy up after he gets shot in the head and then the political landscape New Vegas get destabilized over the course of the next ten minutes

Not really 10 minutes. He didn't count any of his load times, and he used tcl to skip over the entire wasteland.
Also he waited for many hours so maybe like a week including the theoretical fast travel time
To the inhabitants of the Mojave wasteland, a lot more time than 10 minutes passed, you forgot to include the skip times for the upgrade, so the political landscape of New Vegas destabilized over the course of a few hours :P

@slightlyshittedunderwear Well that was an isometric pixelated game from 1998-9 with not even a quarter of the content that FNV had. This was a completely 3D game that had animations, thousands of lines of dialogue, and a complete open world. Fallout 2 also wasn't rushed either, it was just done in 9 months.
it's even more impressive when you realise that almost 25% of the entire run takes place in doc mitchell's house alone

Bethesda: Can't get faster than 10 minutes because it takes that long just to start the game after the unskippable, annoying starting scene.

Might be the best fallout game to this day.
But it is unfortunately still one of the most broken/unstable. PS3 port is the worst port of any game I've played. For me, it crashes without fail right near Novac.

The game is absolute garbage. 18 months is more time than they got to work on any project they had before this.
They had the engine already made with all the assets as well. Combined with the fact that they had OG writers from Fallout with them. 18 months was more than enough time.

The developers are so wholesome. You can really tell they love their game.
Thats why New Vegas is so loved by the people
Josh Sawyer himself even did like a 14 hour livestream of him doing a playthrough about a year ago.
The dev is actually a modders from other bethesda game named elder scroll oblivion, so he actually knows what the players want
you can also tell how tilted they were about being forced to do this in only 18 months
Especially the one who said he forgot he worked on this game.
For those that are unaware, Josh Sawyer personally made a lot of the bug fix mods that exist out there for New Vegas and for a long time curated lists of mods that fixed bugs, etc. It wasn't their fault they had to rush the game and he tried to amend it.

To him he must've just shot this guy barely a few hours beforehand, and here this guy was, with a caravan shotgun pointed to his face XD
He ended at level 12, meaning that he leveled up 1.2x per minute. Absolute beast
btw that’s not how math works, as you mean 1.2 levels per minute, not 1.2x per minute. It’s the difference between linear and exponential graphs, or normal and compound interest.

But even through the mathematical sense you’re wrong, the description of 1.2 times for x minutes (y=1.2x) is a perfectly valid equation that could work for this instance.

The lead designer openly calling the studio "Bug-sidian" has got to be the best type of self deprecating and self aware kind of humour to have.
They know the game isn't perfect, they know there's bugs, and they acknowledge it and still hold the IP dear to their hearts, and it shows

Don't put blame on the devs, blame management instead. Additionally, it's nigh impossible to fix every single bug in a game of this size.

Funnily enough, in the older GTAs turning the language to japanese helped with some parts of the game, so they werent far away
Likewise, currently in ff xiv, switching the speech and subtitle to Japanese for Praetorium and the other base game main story quest shaves about 3 seconds off of the unskippable monologue scenes

Yeah Japanese tends to be the choice for speedrunners because there's less text to scroll

These guys did some amazing work, and being able to hear the pride in their voice really makes me wonder what it would have been like if they had more time to work on it, they made both one of the best, and buggiest Fallout games of all time.
Microsoft now owns Bethesda, Obsidian, and InXile. Bethesda owns the Fallout franchise. The original creator of the Fallout franchise and several writers of FO1, FO2, and NV work for Obsidian. The original publisher of the Fallout franchise owns InXile and several writers of Fallout and Black Isle games work for InXile. Other NV writers are working freelance and can be hired back for new projects. So Microsoft has most of the people who worked on the entire Fallout franchise, including the people who created it in the first place and it would not be that difficult for them to hire back other crew. They can make a Fallout game with like 90% of the main creative people who have been involved in the entire franchise.

The devs always say "we spent [x amount of time] making this game and they did it in [tiny fraction of time]!" But in reality, while the final speedrun only takes, say, 10 minutes for FO:NV, it took hundreds of thousands of man-hours to come up with all the strategies and glitches that make up the speedrun, split amongst thousands of community members, researchers, and streamers. Really, the speedrunning community is a testament to *just how much time* people DO spend on these games, that they can accomplish these crazy feats.
Greatest thing to hear the Devs talk about this game, feels like these guys are hero’s and to hear how humble they are is awesome!

Every second helps, that means figuring out which language is displayed or said fastest.
That’s what they did too
The amount of time it took to figure out each languages speed, for both text and audio was probably longer than the time it saved in all the runs using the strat, and that's kinda impressive in it's own right, serious dedication for even the smallest time save.

This is hands-down my favorite 'developers react' video ever. The guys' game-design knkwledge, meeting Sharo_ 's speedrunning standard... amazing!
Thanks devs this is one of the best games of all times. Bugs arent even that big of a deal if it doesn't ruin the gameplay most people dont find bugs this gamebreaking. And we get really into the characters, the art, the story and all the little details

the bugs are a big part part of bethesda game charm tbh. it wudnt feel the same if occasionally these rubbery npcs didn't occasionally die then immediately stretch to abominable proportions, spazz out flinging nearby items at deadly speeds in all directions, before floppily spiraling off into space. or leave midconversation by sliding backwards, have their head spontaneously explode, then rocket back past you speaking normal pleasantries as they fly by at a headless mach 5

The flashing loading screen is quick loading (you quicksave and quick load fast), it skips whatever line characters are saying (if he does it 5 times is because the charactyer talking has 5 lines).
Also he waits not to hit a specific time, but because the securitron update demostration has scripted animations and by waitng the game advances 1h and basically skip it/simulates them (there's like 5 demonstrations so he does it 5 times)
18 months, still blows my mind. Imagine if they got 2-3 years. What new Vegas could’ve been

This is the most wholesome of these that I've ever scene. Devs care, but are so awesome about the glitches, but also commend Bathesda for what they did. How awesome! They just love the game, and still do, and any extra content for it.

One of the most memorable games of my childhood. Could you imagine what this game could have been if they had more time to work on it? Already a great game, definitely my favorite Fallout game overall

Obsidian has tons of their own stuff going on. doubt they care about making another Fallout even with both being owned by microsoft now.

You need both Bethesda and Obsidian for that, Obsidian can't carry it on themselves, especially not after losing most of OG New Vegas writers.

My fastest “speedrun” was about 10 hours just to get the casino achievement of getting kicked out out of all of them

Language choices are often part of a speedrun indeed.
And not just the language, sometimes it comes down how fast a specific character set renders, some games are faster in Japanese Kanji, others in alphabet and others again in Cyrillic.
In others, a specific language has the shortest/fastest VO or text lines and that gets chosen. It's usually only fractions of seconds per line, but in textbox heavy games (like FF1-9), this adds up to minutes in a full run. FF7/8/9, Xenoblade, Legend or Dragoon and games like it have speedruns that so many decades later are still 6-24 hours long, so the minuscule faster text or VO output results in quite a few minutes saved overall.
