Carl: "Chat, is it possible to make that jump? Is that a makeable jump?"
Chat, knowing that jump is an infamous speedrun skip: ~sweating profusely~
Which one is this, the burg to lower undead burg, or the one to the black knight? I haven't reached this part in the vod yet
@@corruptconverter2616 Burg to lower undead burg, yeah. I'm not sure if he was doing the exact right jump but it looked close. XD
I've tried that jump hundreds of times and ive only been successful like 3 times😅😅😅 its so hard

I really appreciate you doing this, thank you!
Happy to help, I'm watching it anyways and it doesn't take that much time to just pause and write a time stamp. Feel free to throw them in the description to auto segment the video.
Thank you, good sir!
Should add “knowledge checkpoint” to Ladder!
Wait does he figure out how to look at item descriptions\detailed stats at some point?
I am seriously impressed that Carl is so successful despite being blind and having 8 bytes of memory.
Lol, how many times did he say "Maybe I should block more than never"
seriously
and no control of his own fingers
After so many years you can't really appreciate how trolly this game is until you watch someone go in truly blind. Doubly so when that person is already blind.
Lmfao
@@ennayanne omfg stfu lol the first game was very trolly back in the day. It was even for you, although I get the impression from your post that you’re a fart huffing FromSoft bro 😂
@@ennayanne I dunno man, if the cancel button from the blacksmith leading to a fall of a cliff isn't a troll, I don't know what is.
It's glorious.
@@ennayanne Amen, first souls game I played is dark souls 2 and after playing ds1 I had a real tough time going through 2.
A word about spoilers and the souls community, something that may in part explain some of the troubles you've had with Hollow Knight in this regard, as there's significant fandom overlap there. The Souls games were deliberately designed to play into the old idea of kids sharing experiences and trading secrets on the playground. Some Souls games, particularly the earlier and more experimental ones, hide secrets so well that few players would almost ever find them on their own, or throw in death traps or ambushes with little chance of players noticing them before they're caught. The message and blood stain mechanics that let players could leave active or passive hints for each other are arguably the intended way for this stuff to be found - though of course these hints are often cheeky, unhelpful, or actively misleading, and that's part of the fun of it. That's all interesting in itself, but it's relevant here because it sort of trained the souls fandom to share this kind of stuff, to want to help (or troll, or both) new players with tips and advice. For many its a sort of habitual thing that is difficult to break or resist, despite the fact that it runs directly contrary to what many streamers and lets players are trying to do & the experience they're trying to offer their viewers. Basically, I'm saying if you're trying for a completely isolated and blind experience, you might have to take some extra precautions to keep spoilers out of chat & comments compared to other games.
I actually think the game is best enjoyed (after having played a bit now) with the silly messages on. There's some shit they clearly intended you to only find by sharing with friends, and I like that aspect quite a bit.
@@ennayanneEh. Carl is funny, nay, hilarious by himself. We'll be fine.
Fun Fact: Every time you hear that bell ring in Firelink Shrine, it means someone else playing the game online just rang the Bell of Awakening.
Woah, I didn't know that. That sounds so cool!
Walks out of a room. Walks immediately back into the room. "Have I been here before?"
Carl has been going in on these awesome games, excited to see his playthrough of this.
I can’t believe he played this game for over 6 hours and didn’t roll through any barrels 😊
Ha ha, it pains me, but thus is the experience of a blind unspoiled playthrough. 😅
So excited for this playthrough! Dark Souls is a very grim game, but it has a lot of intentional humour in it too, in a Loony Tunes "anvil falling on your head" sort of way. I think you're going to have a great time exploring this wonderfully horrible world!
Larl: "I have like a dagger but a melee strategy seems like a bad idea."
Larl: ~proceeds to smack people with his staff while his dagger cries in shame~
I stop neglecting the dagger next vid XD
@@CarlPlayin42tbh the dagger is t a very good weapon. Its main use case is for the parrying mechanic
@@mwperk02Nope. Dagger makes bad guys bleed. It's grand.
Carl: Magic SUCKS at close range.
Also Carl: Thou Shalt Only Use Magic At Close Range
Carl's here playing the best games of all time back to back to back.
I am ASTOUNDED he didn't eat the fire keeper soul and found it early in his playthrough...
I was expecting him to attack the Crestfallen Warrior and get a GAME OVER
Completely understand the no spoilers, its what makes these games great, exploration and discovery. But the chat restrictions seem weird. saw chatter get reprimanded for asking "does he have key" at a point he had already picked up several keys, I wouldnt consider that spoilers unless he named specific key and or direction/location no? In-game messages spoil considerably more, idk imo I spose. "excited for the quit" ;-) GLHF carl 💪
The idea is that if I read that message it will prime me with something to do. We always relax these restrictions, but for the very beginning, I want to learn stuff on my own for a bit. Then, I always end up enjoying mild suggestions once I've deeper into the games.
@@CarlPlayin42
I’m so excited to see this playthrough. I love that you’re playing this ❤
This is the first I've seen you, and I'm thoroughly impress with how meticulously you played this. I love that you managed to spend more than 5 hours in what's basically the extended tutorial of the game, and managed to keep learning (and sometimes retaining, haha) more things about the game. Dark Souls asks a lot of its players and the way you've been playing makes me excited to see the rest of your journey. I don't think you'll have disappointed Dark Souls : )
My favorite vaccine-developing, science-loving, troll-level-dummying man playing my favorite game? This makes me immeasurably happy!
Even though the number of deaths doesn't really matter as Dark Souls is more about exploration and the journey in general, since the counter is there but mostly forgotten in the more recent sessions I rewatched the vods to give an accurate number.
In this first video I counted 28 Deaths with the leading cause of death being normal enemies by a small margin. Carl died 12.5x to enemies, 11.5x to gravity and 4x to bosses with 1 death being split due to a rat pushing him off a ledge.
Thank you! It eventually gets updated much later, but please feel free to double check.
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU PLAY THIS CARL
oh boy this is gonna be fun
(Edit: beginning with DS1 is the right decision imo)
We gotta get this man to put the S on the end of soul
Omfg! Dude, back to back to back to back bangers! I frikkin love this channel!
What a throwback to back when people still thought the Souls control scheme was bad. There's always a neat transition between people thinking the controls are bad to realizing that they're brilliant and revolutionary (minus the running jump in the earlier games)
seeing you play all these games for the first time is such a gift. thank you carl!
Story time. I first played dark souls over a friend's house. I too chose a sorcerer, but somehow missed seeing the lock on tutorial. So I spent the first like 20 hours of the game manually aiming the soul arrows by pinpoint body positioning for the x axis and then moving the camera up and down for the y axis.
Dude I missed to tutorial hole in Elden Ring and it was my first FS game, by their rep I just thought it was par for the course learning everything on my own. Spend first 18 hours without Torrent just getting my ass handed to me all around limgrave lmao
oh my goodness you poor soul
I was also new with Elden Ring, and I also didn't learn about the ability to lock on to enemies until 30 hours in .-. I got a LOT better as soon as I figured that out lmao
you'll get used to attack on trigger button. right shoulder buttons for right hand actions, left shoulder buttons for left hand actions. very intuitive.
just don't ask how to jump. :p
1:47:15
Fantastic first impression that is exemplary of why Souls connected with so many of us. In an era where UX was rapidly becoming "solved," Miyazaki loudly repeated FromSoft's everlasting question:
"Do you remember Wizardry?"
Did they change some stuff from the OG game? I clearly recall that dragon spitting fire way before you reach the ladder.
I have NEVER seen the Asylum Demon jump up and attack the player like that. The fact that it was after Carl tried running away really made it seem like the demon was saying "Don't run from me! I still want to play!"
Great idea on that community post on the main channel, I did not know this channel existed! Now I have even more Larl to binge :)
39:45 carl doesnt know how impressive this little combo is this early.
Always fun to see someone playing Dark Souls for the first time. I personally recommend playing them in order, both for the gradual gameplay improvements/refinements and the story, as obscured as it is. And definitely play online, the messages, bloodstains, invasions, and so on are part of the experience. Did you know the ringing bell is also an online feature?
I've actually never played a mage, I was always put off by the limited spell uses. I actually just finished a Faith run of Elden Ring, but even then I took advantage of weapon infusions that scaled damage with Faith. Rather, Zwei was my jam in DS1, and Ultra Greatswords have been my default in every Souls game since.
And I just noticed you already have seven DS1 videos and are already up to Nito and Seathe. I thought these were going to trickle out over the next few weeks, but it looks like you've been busy. I can tell you got hooked hard! They're not for everyone, but the people who like Souls games tend to really love them. And now I have something to watch for the next few days while I get caught up.
2:57:35 RIP 4 humanity and 1700 souls
That ending was hilarious. So cool to see someone play this game blind!
Let's goooo. Hope he plays Dark Souls 2/3 and Bloodborne before tackling Elden Ring
A comment on the 'back' button also being dodge: I think it is entirely intentional. All the controls, I think, are intentional. In the case of the dodge it is not to troll you but to help you. The game does not pause in menues and when you have a menu up most buttons are taken over by menu controls. The only things you can do is move and control the camera. So you need a back button. All your face buttons do stuff so which of those actions are most benign? Which button do you want when suddenly you get attacked? Square is out the window as that uses your items, usually estus but possibly more important items. It also locks you in an animation. Triangle is also not good as that changes your stance between 2-handing and 1-handing. This can be easy to miss and get you into some real trouble. X is also out as that is what you might term your 'action' button in menues. You could use the buttons that opens the menu (select? I forget) but if you spam it, you would just open the menu again right away. It is also an awkward button to press in a heated situation. As for the dodge button (circle), well it is the dodge button if you spam that you dodge. This is an ideal action to take if you are suddenly thrust into combat. Not ideal when you are standing with your back to the edge of an abyss though.
Edit: You continue saying that the circle button both backsteps and dodges. That is the same action. Backstep is a neutral dodge while move+O is rolling dodge. They both achieve the same thing: Giving you I-frames. Having them on different buttons would be a waste of a button. Furthermore it ingrains in your head that O-button is for avoidance. This also fits with it as the run button but far more flimsily. I think they realize this as I think you can change it, at least you can in later games.
Dark souls is a game with the lot of actions. Actions require buttons and there is only so many buttons on a controller. I think they did it well but hardly perfect. The real culprit is the jump. You have to hold down O then let go and click it again, and pray you did it fast enough. I also feel like the kick was/is silly. Too often I would want to just step slightly forward and attack and instead of a nice hit, I whiff, with a kick.
The amount of times you back hopped off the trail when talking to the blacksmith lol
PRAISE THE SUN!
the most exhausting tutorial ever.
honestly, watching you start with magic is very interesting. i feel like most people are turned away from it by whoever recommended the game to them.
I somehow always seem to pick the builds no one else uses.
Even though it's probably the most new player friendly play style
@@sunbleachedangelIt’s noob friendly but the reason I don’t recommend it for a first playthrough is because it lets you cheese stuff without interacting with the enemies movesets as much. If you run a basic melee build your first time you’re just going to have a stronger understanding of the game mechanics by the end of it. But obviously whatever helps people enjoy the game and get over that initial hump is good.
OMG HELL YEAH!!!!
the abrupt ending killed me, looking forward to part 2!!!!
Never edit out the running back in these games, it's an essential part of the experience
Ive seen so many blind playthroughs of souls games, but this is the first one ive ever seen where someone attempted to kill something by meleeing with a magic staff 4 damage at a time 😂
I never played Dark Souls fully blind because I had played Demon’s Souls, but boy is this reminding of the early struggles. Remember friend, don’t you dare go hollow!
This game, specifically, captures the vibe of Berserk really well. It's dark, it's bleak, the world itself just feels rotten -- but there's a bit of absurdity to it, as well. It's self-aware and knows how to incorporate just enough "goofy" elements to balance out the gloominess. Asylum Demon would be right at home in the manga: he's intimidating as all hell, _but he also looks kind of ridiculous,_ with his gigantic ass and oversized hammer.
Totally and the menu/ character creation music always gives me Guts theme vibes - kind of a calm but nervous apprehension of the journey, and it's somehow significant in ways you can't quite explain.
3:39:54 "What item did I just get? White soap stone?" Proceeds to scroll past the item five times.
Games can bombard you with information. Stuff can fly past anyone's notice, but-and this is said with affection-damn... The CarlBlind meme is real.
Carl has been on FIRE with these games recently, very entertaining!
I've never seen magic play in DS, let alone not first playthrough :D
but its fun, i wish i could play DS for the first time again! so this is great to see
Oh, god, I can't stop laughing. Every time.
Bloodstain: Ghost does the thing then dies suddenly in a way.
Carl: I wonder what happens if I do the same thing. I don't see a-- AAAAAAH!
Carl: Has learned nothing. Dies in that way.
Nothing wrong with the controls. Left and right hand actions clearly separated. Lots of actions that are all there within limitation of the physical controller.
It takes a shift button to enable any more actions, like Nioh does, which is more confusing but still learnable.
I have just discovered that Carl is playing DS:R and my prediction is that he sees it the same way I do: A really big MM2 troll level
i love that you picked this game :) i always love watching reactions to Dark Souls. Just started watching, hope you had fun. i would love to see you complete the series :) DS 1,2 and 3 i mean
That final scream at the ending was chef's kiss
About halfway in. Will mention im pretty sure you can change the face button prompts in one of the options menus. (I did play this keybaord & mouse though)
I got it all sorted by next vid~
Yay! Dark Souls! Hopefully the chat won’t be as annoying as in Hollow Knight. Dark Souls has a lot of hidden details and lore.
I love these longer videos! I don’t need the edited ones
00:21:29 - [reads tutorial message explaining how to run, out loud, tests it, comments on it]
02:28:12 - "i have no idea how to run...no clue. [...] if there is a run button, how has the game not told me that by now, because it told me all the other stuff"
Maybe he has some kind of neurodivergence that makes him forget things easily, like locations on the map he's on, or directions told to him earlier? It's definitely possible.
4:21:00. Take about making a dark souls same as other games!
In th courage: you don’t click in the game.
Main idea in souls games is precise control and knowing your surroundings. Moves of the character, enemies, bosses, weapons, spells. It all so simple, but often first time experience wants simplisity. Mash dodge button to avoid damage. Hit attack button to give damage
DARK SOULS gives you control in more complex but absolutely clear way. And when you got this - you begin enjoying the GAME
i really appreciate these playthroughs. the adhd factor make me very invested with how Carl play because i would be missing a lot of things too lmao
Carl, please check out a speedrun of this game now that you've finished. It'll blow your mind.
The way the video ends is glorious
Dude just stumbles on the burg skip all causaly lol
Play dark souls 3 before elden ring because it will be hard to go back to ds3 after that. The games feel very similar in gameplay, but elden ring gives you more useful tools that you'd really miss in ds3 once you've become accustomed to them.
Ds2 is an entirely different game and as distinct and unique as the first. That one can be done at any point
Conversely, I played Dark Souls 3 after Elden Ring and holy crap did I love every minute of it. Definitely makes you appreciate the benefits of linear world design vs Elden Ring's open world. I immediately understood why so many people celebrated it and its bosses as the swan song of the Souls series; it's a wonderfully fun game with a lot more polish and less bullshit than what came before.
The learning curve in souls games is steep, especially going in completely blind. My first one was dark souls 2 and I quit the game for weeks because I couldn't get past the Pursuer. After you finish one though, it's smooth sailing from there on. Hope you have fun with this one, if you get through it, you're going to absolutely love all the other ones as well.
DkS2 is especially rough since you have no idea that s change depending on Agility. Even if you played Demon's and/or Dark Souls 1 it's not in those
6:23:10
Fuck yeah!👍
One of refreshing filings. Game gives difference. And so many actions in your control.
Healing - you must think about next move of your enemy. Can you do it without punishing?
Attack. Two buttons. Different movement - different animations. Precise animations
Magic and support and buff spells actions. You must choose when you can safely do it
Put the humanity in the Quick slot was a terrible idea 😂
He really put the consume in consumable.
In C++ (programming language most games are made in) the std namespace contains all of the standard library, so for us programmers, we first think standard when we see std
So it probably simply didn't occur to the programmers that normal human beings would first think of something different first
Carl (one of my favorite contentcreators) playing my favorite gameseries :DDDDDDDDDDDD didnt expect that
My favorite part about this is that he looked at the dragon and said “I’m not supposed to go this way.”
But this game is clever. It’ll let you do what you want but eventually it brings you around to the point where the dragon is the only reasonable option left. Such phenomenal design
@2:39:33 - No, no. Leave the pain in. This is such a nostalgia hit, seeing you go through all the shit.
Subbed.
MAAAAAAAAN ….. i love this game to death .
and i think that you will like it too !!
Absolutely one of the best games I've beaten. I wish future Souls games were more like this with an interconnected castle with tons of pathing that opens up as you go.
yes i wish that too@@GRNKRBY

Carl will have 178 total deaths at end of game
exact 150 deaths
242

Would love to see you play Bloodborne and the rest in this series.
Ds2 sotfs is really massive and just as janky feeling. Thats my favorite one but they are all good
Omg lettttsss goooo! This is hype.
I would have recommended starting with 3 and going back to play 1. But play them all PLEASE!!!
the loading screen lore/item descriptions are a big L these days since everyone has SSDs.. loading times are too short to read anything at all ^^
Heavy Soul Arrows aren't just arrows?! 😮
I would not recommend DS1 as a first experience in a Souls game, as it’s quite old now and a bit frustrating at times (but still a must to play). But if you can endure it to the end, you’ll only enjoy the recent games more (DS3, Elden, Bloodborne and Sekiro). I only played DS1 and DS2 one time, but I played Elden 4 times, DS3 three times, Bloodborne about 13 times, and Sekiro 7 times. Best games ❤
4:23:40. Complains about many tasks in control of one button. It happens when you try to add complexity to control character through gamepad. Almost Every buttons acts differently for different scenarios
Not to be a snob but if you are running out of Soul Arrows why don't you buy some more? You have seen that the blacksmith is selling them about 5 times now.
I'm not sure if this is spoiling anything but out of DS 1-3 I'd say 3 is the best. I never played Demon Souls but I hear that it's really barebones and it was made before they had their design philosophy down. Sekiro is definitely the hardest FromSoftware game and I still haven't played Elden Ring but I hear it's the best one.
It is so strange to me that Carl considers reading the controls and explanations of basic mechanics like Humanity/Kindling and terms like Hollowing/Undead to be spoilers.
Instead of a death counter there should be a counter for how many times Carl presses the wrong button. 😂 Thanks for the hours of entertainment Carl!
2 hours and 14 minutes until he learned how to run 😂😂😂
Ok, how is asking if you know how to run a spoiler? It's a basic game mechanic. I get that you don't want to be spoiled but it went a bit far many times. I actually ended up not enjoying the video as much because of it and stopped watching 2.5 hours in, which is incredibly rare for me to do.
Thank you Carl!
carl definitely knew about the taurus demon
I did not, in fact.
Yes, his technique was bad and some of his exploring was comical and not thorough, but i was shouting in frustration, "level your vitality!"
Not a huge fan of most of the vods posted here, I definitely prefer edited videos, but I 100% will watch all of the dark souls ones. Too good not to.
Wait... 2011 is considered to be old now?
Also it's great that Souls games give you all the tools you need, but it's up to YOU to figure out how to best use them to your advantage.
Controls teach passions which is VERY necessary for this game. This was one of the first games I've played with a controller so now controls in any other third person game feel weird :)
