Dave, I can't thank you enough. This tutorial helped me make more than the growl synth, it opened up a lot of options I didn't know about to making synths. Thank you so much!
You are the real deal, man. Not only do you know all about synthesis in reason, but you are good at explaining it in a musical and coherent way. It took me years to figure out some of the stuff you explain in any given video. I always come back to these whenever I'm in need of inspiration. Thank you!
Dave, I think you're probably one of the best reason tutors on youtube and on the internet itself, aside from the people at Propellerheads. Each video you make that I've watched has taught me a little bit more, so thank you very much! Also, I'm saving this synth as Robo-Cerberus, cause the name just sounds amazing.
Because this way he teaches you the basics of what each setting in the preset does and in that way you can use what you learn from the tutorial to make your own freakish bassy combinations
Dude, thank you SO much for all the background info. It's nice to not just "copy/paste" settings and parameters, but to understand the fundamentals of the sound and synth to afford more focused experimentation. I look forward to more tutorials and of course, to making more epic music. Cheers!
Best production channel on TH-cam. Even though I'm not a Reason user, your explanations are clear and informative enough to apply across a wide variety of different situations, let alone DAWs. Thanks for doing what you do. :]
Watching in 2023. Why? Because I've just listened back to some of my old tracks when I first started producing, which were following these tutorials. This channel is where I started from, in Langdale Hall student accommodation in Manchester. It's amazing, watching and listening and knowing EXACTLY what everything in Thor does, despite having never used it since 2011. Back then I didn't have a CLUE and was just following along blindly. Even though I always followed along and copied everything, it never sounded nearly as good!
@Cazaq With 7 Day Songs I figure if people want to hear the final thing they can skip to the final song. If they want to have the fun of hearing the sound build up, they can do that too. If more people want previews then I'll consider it, but if you guys enjoy the anticipation, let me know.
Dave,I am really glad u did this tutorial...The THOR is a bit of a mystery to me,so thanks to u and yr 128 mutant puppies, things make a bit more sense....Hopefully soon I will be able to use it without having to follow tutorials step by step.
You should always preview the final effect at the beginning of the video , it's just more easy to see if I like what you might have to offer. Thanks for the awesome tutorials.
At first I was like "Hah,this guy talks funny, and he sounds really..." but then I stopped myself, and kept watching, and was like "Holy damn...this guy knows his shit,I never knew how complicated this could be" Just goes to show, you cant judge a book by its cover, errr, well in this case, voice. Nice work dude,I hope one day after years of practice I could even come a little close to your level of knowledge on music production. Im looking forward to learning about this.
I actually found it quite intuitive and well the fact I understand kind of what you are getting at. If you don't, then learn about manipulating synthesizers.Otherwise you may as well being writing a letter in the dark. Good tutorial, keep at it.
@morcia17 Being able to have a lilac windows theme and comfortably talk about fluffy animals only solidifies my confidence in my heterosexuality. I'm not one of those kinds of people that, you know, feel the need to call random people gay over the internet in order to temporarily reassure themselves of their own orientation.
theres good harmor preset on flstudio called growler or if you add alittle distortion on megatron puked on a cat you can save your self some frustration
@ObeLL1 I guess Dave was being sarcastic about Reason NOT placing them there out of itself. If you left click on the Line Mixer 6:2 and the right click -> create MClass Equalizer, it should hook up the cables the right way. If you still have trouble getting it right Line Mixer: - Send out -> Scream 4 input - Send in -> Scream 4 output - Master out -> Compressor input Compressor output -> EQ1 input EQ1 output -> EQ2 input EQ2 output -> Combinator "From Devices" input Hope this helps!:)
@wwwboyinabandcom idk if you ever did this but i like to sometimes open up the demo songs and i solo every instrument so i can hear each sound by itself and then you really listen and can analyze everything once you hear it all come together , i feel more appreciation seeing it all get built
ok, at first. i thought i was learning how to make some sick dubstep.... turns out, all that made me feel stupid! im not afraid to admit that that was WAY over my head.
FUN FACT: when you press the arrow to choose an osc you can press the Letter it starts with eg A for analog W for wavetable, also works when routing LFO's etc :D
Unskilled people who say that- Tablets and apps are for you. I'd love to have people who claim there is no skill involved in electronic music tell me how synthesis works- sine waves, oscillators, algorithms, lfo's, envelopes, filters, and all the other things I have been studying for 20 years. Endless possibilities of science.
+Jared Ivey Not skill. Knowledge. There is a difference. It doesn't take skill to point and click and change everything, it does take knowledge to do it correctly. While it does also take knowledge to play guitar in the correct key, it also takes skill to play at the correct tempo when you are playing things that have lots of sixteenths, thirty-seconds, and triplets.
Are you saying that classical composers weren't skilled? That creating complex symphonies with sounds all playing at once that work and flow to create a cohesive piece didn't take skill? The knowledge of how to run the programs is as important as the skill required for building a piece that actually sounds good.
LOL classic composers were ALL very skillful musicians... And the fact is, electronic music can NEVER be as emotional as a musician who makes sounds with his fingers. And i am NOT trying to diss electronic music but do not even try to compare it with instrumental music. Ever.
Dude, you certainly haven't heard about Trent Reznor, have you? He is a real musician, a great one, that uses Synths... Check out the story of Nine Inch Nails... What they did in music history. Synths can be musical, it depends on the musician only, whether it is good attractive sounds, or art, real heart-felt music.
Had the same problem. The synths are not combined properly. Just mark the thor synths and the combinator (ctrl+left mouse), right click the combinator and combine. Or if they are combined try to re-combine them. Mark synths and combinator. Right click on combinator and uncombine. Create new combinator and combine the devices. You might run into the same problem once you create the subtractor so do that first and combine all three. I don't know why this happens but this manouver solved it for me.
FYI: The wavetable oscillator does not have 128 waveforms, only 128 positions based on the fact that the position is measured out of a possible 128 values (0-127). The harmonics wavetables have the most maxing out at 32 individual waveforms. If you turn X-Fade off, you'll see what I mean.
I was listening to this with headphones, I take them off for a second, and when I put them back on, you're talking about an evil scientist that wants to manipulate puppies. Brilliant.
Reason and FL are basically exactly the same, if you want to be able to make Growls I'd totally use Sytrus as you do already, it's actually a really powerful FM synth when used correctly, I'd recommend checking out a guy called Seamless, his How To Bass series is basically all you need to know about making bass synths..
this taught me a lot, but one question i usually cut off the low sub in EQs so its not so muddy will this work too to clear the muddyness? Of course it probaly depends on how much low ends are in the synth already.
I ASKED if he was gay because it seemed as if he is and his answer clarified this for me PLUS I did not say that he IS gay. Thank you for all comments about me!
Thanks Dave, for yet another great tutorial! One question:did you record the bare sound of the two patches playing together, or was thre a Mastering Suite active in the video? I used the exact values you 'clicked to' (e.g. not 'around 2.5KHz' but the exact value shown) but I can't get it to sound quite as awesome as in the video without mastering. PS: I found out setting the Scream to 'scream' mode with P1 around 93 makes it much grittier in the highs. Going to try sidechaining it next :)
OK, I've just uploaded a patch on the boyinaband forum for this tutorial, but i've placed all devices in a single combinator and included a BV512 Vocoder acting as a spectrum analyzer. search for "Skrillexy Bass Growl, ala Dave, but as a single patch"
Dave, I can't thank you enough. This tutorial helped me make more than the growl synth, it opened up a lot of options I didn't know about to making synths. Thank you so much!
I've got no idea what you're doing or how this could be helpful to me, but you're just too entertaining, so i watched it anyway.
You are the real deal, man. Not only do you know all about synthesis in reason, but you are good at explaining it in a musical and coherent way. It took me years to figure out some of the stuff you explain in any given video. I always come back to these whenever I'm in need of inspiration. Thank you!
the more precise and effective tuto i've never seen on youtube for this kind of music.
Dave, I think you're probably one of the best reason tutors on youtube and on the internet itself, aside from the people at Propellerheads. Each video you make that I've watched has taught me a little bit more, so thank you very much!

Best production channel on TH-cam.
Even though I'm not a Reason user, your explanations are clear and informative enough to apply across a wide variety of different situations, let alone DAWs.
Thanks for doing what you do. :]
Your knowledge of reason is very very impressive.
nicely explained... Ive been working with reason since ver.1 and still Im able to learn something new whenever I watch a tut. like this.. niiice :)
Watching in 2023. Why? Because I've just listened back to some of my old tracks when I first started producing, which were following these tutorials. This channel is where I started from, in Langdale Hall student accommodation in Manchester.

dude... the way you explain everything is just genius.
thank you for making tutorials that are actually fun to watch!
oh my fucking god. the mad scientist metaphor was the most helpful metaphor I've ever fucking heard.
@Cazaq With 7 Day Songs I figure if people want to hear the final thing they can skip to the final song. If they want to have the fun of hearing the sound build up, they can do that too. If more people want previews then I'll consider it, but if you guys enjoy the anticipation, let me know.
Hit 8 over and over YOU ARE A DJ NOW
That first "HI" scared the shit out of me!
Hey man, robo Cerberus sounds nice and deep and dark ! Thanks for making this video ! I really really appreciate it.
I like how you utilize the equalizers and compressor., few people really understand the importance of their use.
Your description of wavetables just made dubstep so much better lmao. I'll be thinking of pissed off angry mutant puppies every time now.
You are awesome. This tutorial is informative yet entertaning. You awesome, you.
this high-pitched "Hi!" is THE sign of rising excitement and upcoming infotainment
i actually followed this quite well, i its his voice, it doesn't get annoying over time like most tutorials
Dave,I am really glad u did this tutorial...The THOR is a bit of a mystery to me,so thanks to u and yr 128 mutant puppies, things make a bit more sense....Hopefully soon I will be able to use it without having to follow tutorials step by step.
I could, but it's also in the description. I kindly suggest you read that :)
you are really and truely a spectacular teacher..THANK YOU sooooo much and plenty for these tutorials....it help me out alot...god bless you...
You should always preview the final effect at the beginning of the video , it's just more easy to see if I like what you might have to offer.
Thanks for the awesome tutorials.
Do more of these tutorials please Dave :)
Sir. Your sarcasm just got you another sub.
At first I was like "Hah,this guy talks funny, and he sounds really..." but then I stopped myself, and kept watching, and was like "Holy damn...this guy knows his shit,I never knew how complicated this could be"

I love his voice.
Love your pink window-frame! :D
I made a track while watching this, it's called "Dave's Dog":
soundcloud.com/unfa/daves-dog-v-04
i miss these tutorials.
theres good harmor preset on flstudio called growler or if you add alittle distortion on megatron puked on a cat you can save your self some frustration
Will do, thanks man. I'll check him out soonist.
that puppy analogy was genius lol
I listened to the guy talk for about a minute before i realized that this crap is a lot harder than i originally thought.
Mate you have the funniest voice ever, but the tutorial is great :)
@ObeLL1
I guess Dave was being sarcastic about Reason NOT placing them there out of itself. If you left click on the Line Mixer 6:2 and the right click -> create MClass Equalizer, it should hook up the cables the right way. If you still have trouble getting it right

Hope this helps!:)
you really are a scientist !
@wwwboyinabandcom idk if you ever did this but i like to sometimes open up the demo songs and i solo every instrument so i can hear each sound by itself and then you really listen and can analyze everything once you hear it all come together , i feel more appreciation seeing it all get built
ok, at first. i thought i was learning how to make some sick dubstep.... turns out, all that made me feel stupid! im not afraid to admit that that was WAY over my head.
i enjoy your references
@imthe420guy I was originally going to use orphans.
wow, i can't believe it's that complicated.. i now have respect for dubstep producers.. :-D
I knew electronic music was complicated, but this is just crazy.
FUN FACT: when you press the arrow to choose an osc you can press the Letter it starts with eg A for analog W for wavetable, also works when routing LFO's etc :D
his voice sounds different when he's not recording a video. In the live stream yesterday he sounded different.
ive responded with what ive done with the sound.
have a listen to hear what it sounds like for simple melody.
this is what ive done with the sound. x
great tutorial Dave, thanks !
what a surprise, a german. Crazy good dubstep people
"you can get 50 percent of my revenue/profits for my composition you just transformed" aha sick job man, nice robot growlin
that was an analogy for the ages!!
Very usefull video thanks!!! After watching this carefully, i feel like i can make any dirty sound, gonna make my own dubstep :D
Unskilled people who say that- Tablets and apps are for you. I'd love to have people who claim there is no skill involved in electronic music tell me how synthesis works- sine waves, oscillators, algorithms, lfo's, envelopes, filters, and all the other things I have been studying for 20 years. as much as i agree with that statement, i don't really see how algorithms fit into this
+Jared Ivey Not skill. Knowledge. There is a difference. It doesn't take skill to point and click and change everything, it does take knowledge to do it correctly. Thanks for this, very useful guide
@AktOnInstinkt808 He's using the Record there. But this is pretty much what Reason 6 now looks like, since they combined the two.
Excellent tut so far!
Really liking this tut. The more of your tutorials I watch, the more I want to pick reason back up. Thor seems to be a pretty bitching synth maker.
Very nice tuts, but I a little concerned how you use the EQ. Though the final result is very nice.
Really cool tutorial

Since we're working with Combinators, I just linked the pitch to a knob in said Combinator and automated it from there.
like the wit. very knowledgeable. respect.
I was listening to this with headphones, I take them off for a second, and when I put them back on, you're talking about an evil scientist that wants to manipulate puppies.
Brilliant.
If you put a limiter on the master channel but then threshold the growl bass all the way up would that ruin the sound?
Reason and FL are basically exactly the same, if you want to be able to make Growls I'd totally use Sytrus as you do already, it's actually a really powerful FM synth when used correctly, I'd recommend checking out a guy called Seamless, his How To Bass series is basically all you need to know about making bass synths..
I feel informed. Also, like my sides are burning with laughter. And the urge to hug a puppy.
For the same reason yours is...whatever yours is. He likes it.
this is awesome!! very useful. where can i go to learn more about the theory of sound design?
I find that this bass growl is good for Electro too. :D
Thanks for the tutorial, but why dont u upload the preset with a download link?
good for sound designers.
this taught me a lot, but one question i usually cut off the low sub in EQs so its not so muddy will this work too to clear the muddyness? Of course it probaly depends on how much low ends are in the synth already.
@TheDustyAlex use automation, right click the the pitch wheel and in the sequencer point and click the timing and pitch that you'd like.
i always thought british speak nice english...
because of you, i changed my mind :/
be proud of it xD
This is amazing. thx so much. this can be done with Reason 5 correct? like all the amps, vsts etc are included? cuz this is gunna help me out so much
sick tune!
is he still doing tutorial videos guys?
He's not boring. I know, that's a weird thing nowadays.
oh wow that sounds really good.
Hope I can figure out how to convert this to massive.
I ASKED if he was gay because it seemed as if he is and his answer clarified this for me PLUS I did not say that he IS gay. Thank you for all comments about me!
I love the puppy explanation lol
Thanks Dave, for yet another great tutorial!

PS: I found out setting the Scream to 'scream' mode with P1 around 93 makes it much grittier in the highs.
Going to try sidechaining it next :)
"This is why the growly synths sound like growls, cause the mutant puppies are angry" lmao
i need to know what program your using bro those synths look awesome :)
ur doing that wobble effect in notes with pitch? cuz u didnt assigned rotary
"we now have a puppy with another head" made my day.
good tip - thanks dude.
He says in the description he used Record 1.5 but you can use propellerhead reason 4 or 5
to make it relevant, your voice is 3 octaves higher than mine.
OK, I've just uploaded a patch on the boyinaband forum for this tutorial, but i've placed all devices in a single combinator and included a BV512 Vocoder acting as a spectrum analyzer. search for "Skrillexy Bass Growl, ala Dave, but as a single patch"
@OneMoreMusician So wait. You mean it's making a note lane for Thor and not an automation lane under the combinator's note lane?
thanks,man. - rockin it.
what is this software how do i get im trying to learn help pls.
Why would you have your synth eating up that much room in the mix?
