DANGEROUS OVERGROWN MONSTER REPOT - Grammatophyllum Leopard

  • This was one of the most dangerous repots I had ever done. Luckily no one was injured in the process...including me! This orchid came to me overgrown and I was afraid to tackle the repot mission...so I avoided it for as long as I could and it really made the matter even worse. Don't wait so late, this is something that you have to be diligent about and take appropriate actions immediately.

    A way to loosen the roots is by soaking the roots in a bucket of water for a couple of days the roots will relax and expand allowing you to pull them apart.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clive Davies Great suggestion and although I don't believe they would've came loose because the root ball was so tightly grown together, I wish I would've gave it a shot. I would've preferred to have the roots more separated if possible. This is something I definately will keep in mind if I run across this issue again. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Por que “ aprisionou” uma planta tão linda e de crescimento tão exuberante e espetacular dentro de um arranjo de gaiola? Pra tirar de um vaso de plástico já foi tão complicado. Amei a planta, mas essa planta merecia um espaço livre para suas belas hastes florais.

    10:26 that pour orchid I think it was better in the old pot plus how are you going to get it out when it starts to grow its new growth

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's health was beginning to fade in that old pot and it was no longer giving me blooms because of it. I do believe that I did what was best for it and do not have any regrets. I will not wait for this orchid to become overgrown before I repot and the way that I will be doing the repot is by cutting the wires of the cage to be able to remove her again. It will be a simple and easier process. P.S. even though I had to bend her leaves to get them through...it looked more painful than what it was. She didn't have any injuries or permanent scars from it and as you seen at the end the leaves were just fine and looking as they did before.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm guessing you never plan on repotting again? She's going to eat that birdcage and keep on going. There is a specimen sized on at a local orchid nursery and all you can see is plant and the chain that suspends it, I was told there is a wire basket encased in the mass that the chain is attached to.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael McCarthy Yes, I am aware that the grams are considered one of the largest growing orchids, weighing tons and capable of bringing entire trees down, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to keep it in an empty swimming pool! LOL! Eventually it will have to be cut out of this cage...but next time my hubby will be doing the breaking out...less dangerous for me and the orchid that way. LOL!

    Hi. Grammatophyllums need to be that tight up and have that many aerial roots to bloom. Those "new growths" probably are new spikes.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aleibis Diaz Hello and thanks for watching...and yes they can survive tightly bound but I wouldn't necessarily say they need to. Keep in mind in thier natural habitat they are epiphytes and naturally found growing in trees with the freedom to grow as they will. In this particular case it was way over grown with no room at all left to grow and it was so severely pot bound that there was no air circulation which posed as a threat to it developing root rot and other infections. It did not give me any spikes at all last year and the bulbs were shriveling pretty badly so I did also notice a great decline in its health as well. I do believe that what I did here was for the best interest of this orchid and I do not have any regrets. Thanks for watching and sharing your input. Wishing you the absolute best in your growing adventures! :)

    Wait why did you say the orchid was not as healthy as it was I think the plant looked healthy

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stated that there was a decline in its health and condition which I was referring to the state of the severely wrinkled bulbs lack of bulb growth and blooms last year of which I forgot to mention. Remember when it comes to orchids that looks can also be deceiving...just because an orchid looks healthy does not always mean that it is. There are many other signs that we must when it comes to determining if the orchid is growing properly and is at its fullest potential.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@checkplease7735 I am not sure how many vandas I have I do believe it is less than a hundred now ...probably about 60 or more. I did sadly lose some over the years from the cold winters...and the tree has permanent scars where the trunk was bending and twisting so much that it started cracking the bark. So you do see the bark coming loose in some areas. She also creaks whenever the wind blows. Recently she was severely cut back and I was worried about her but she has continued to grow and bloom for me.
