  • Today we take a look at a new orchid genus for me, the very popular Grammatophyllum.. which I will from now call Grammy as its name doesn't fit in the thumbnail :P
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
First of all, there is an email where you can send your questions with pictures as well and I will try to answer, hopefully in a video! The address is askmissog at gmail, will not write the whole email ;)
By sending the pictures you agree to let me use them in videos, if you don't want me to use them, don't send them! Please use the email mainly for pictures with problems, general questions can be answered in comments as well and I also have a weekly Q&A!
Grammatophyllums are a novelty for me and I hope to grow the scriptum well. The start is a bit shaky, the new growth did not make the transport, but this orchid seems very vigorous and is already growing a new growth!

Hi Danny, I think it is a great idea to send pics of problem plants! We can all learn from this experiment! Hope it is a great success!

Hi Danny. Love your self watering pots. Is super efficient and time saving uf not life (Orchid) saving. Thanks again for email address and hoping you won't be overwhelmed.

I grow this species of Gramatophyllum and it can be sensitive at times... to help limit a possible loss, I take an old backbulb at re-potting and propagate [at least try to] a new plant off it. They do seem to propagate easily.

I don't have orchids but on the topic of containers, I am in process of switching some of my foliage and succulent houseplants to hydroculture using LECA and something similar in US to Seramis mix. I've found the most challenging part of that is matching plant pots with cache pots in a way that fits so neatly in like yours. I looked for the dishes you suggested from Ikea but I couldn't find them, maybe discontinued? But I have found inexpensive containers at party stores, as well as repurposing plastic cups from coffee houses/restaurants. The other question is self-watering or reservoirs which Ill have to learn depending on the plant's needs. :)

I literally just bought about idk, 12? Lol, at the redlands show. I had some damage from transport as well, but I fixed and cut away the dead stuff and well see! I have the ones where the roots grow up. They also catch bird droppings etc. They are definitely unique! I wish I could send you one :( you've helped me so much! The spikes are over 3 ft tall!

Hey Danny! Quick question, why did you decide to switch from semihydro setup to self watering?

"Orchid show and tell" sounds just lovely! I have a general question, no photos, so I'm asking here. I have an infestation of mealybugs. Removed them with alcohol, did spray the entire orchids with alcohol/water/soap solution. However the bugs continue to appear and this is driving me crazy! So should I change the media for all the infected orchids (leca)? Should I re-spray after a week to eliminate the eggs? And yes generally how do you get rid of those pests for good? Thanks!

Hi Danny, can you pls clear how to fertilize orchids which are potted in lechuza pots?like if I repot a paphiopedlum in lechuza system, and If I use sphagnum moss or coco husk as a media, than how I am going to fertilize them, and at what ppm,and if we use fertilizer all the time when we water the orchids which are potted in this system, then is it possible that in long run it can burn there roots, like paphiopedilum has very sensitive roots, and Sphagnum and coco retain so much of salt,so is it ok to fertilise everytime, and do i also have to flush the lechuza pots, plss clear it ,i m pretty confused,?

I also have a gramatophyllum scriptum and a martae, I live in the Philippines so its so common especially during orchid shows. I got my scriptum for only $7 last year from the show. It only has 3 pesudobulbs when I got it, now It has 8 since it has two directions of growth (lucky me). That type of orchid is a massive root producer and loves water, I forgot to water mine for 2 days since its in the corner with high light and it shriveled. Sadly mine never bloomed for me but I think its too young to bloom. But in my opinion its a very hardy plant!
Hope for the best for your orchid!

Do they like sphagnum moss? How big pot do you recommend... Mine has only 3 bulbs now.. But it gets very hot where I live and I'd prefer to water it only 1-2 times a week

Gram with basket roots are easy. They need the same care, however, in an inside type environment the root basket should not get a lot of moisture

I'm going to steal the name "Grammy.." I like it. 😀 and now I won't have to keep looking at the correct spelling when I type.

Hello, I have a jungle monarch orchid and I was wondering if I could repot it now. I think the orchid has snails, and for some time mushrooms have started to appear from the substrate, yes! Mushrooms .... that's why I want to repot it . The orchid has 4 pseudobulbs, 1 backbulb and 2 new growths, What do you think Danny?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, if the medium is infested and is decomposing definitely you should repot the orchid, even if it's not the proper time as they say. Good luck!

My Oncidium orchid bloomed for the first time, she was beautiful, and i thought, may be the flowers are fragrant, no they weren't, yesterday i watered her and this morning i don't know why, but i smelled her, she was fragrant, but not in the best way, like rotten apples, rotten eggs and honey, i really don't like it, but i still love her😂

    • @TheAilaS

Walter L I have an oncidium too and her flowers smell only in the morning. The smell is not bad but not the best either.

TheAilaS i discovered it at the morning, now it's night here and now i can't realy feel the smell, but the orchid looks a little bit like a hybrid of a miltoniopsis and oncidium, but she smells really bad😂
