I don't comment on videos often, but I wanted to say this was an EXCELLENT tutorial; I love the completeness of it, how you'd included the history as well as tiny, meticulous details (which in my opinion, are crucial for a good pomp). A+, buddy! ^^
one of the clearest hair styling tutorial i found out there!!! especially the slicking hair to the opposite way of its natural. thanks mate! i'll try this!
compared to other videos this is probably one of the best videos about this hair style i have watched, well detailed and everthing done step by step and explained why, great video
Got long hair at the top and didn't know how to get that style. So I checked on many videos until I found you in that superb Mini Cooper. I was about to cut my hair short but tried the hair spray first then the wax. Man it works. You saved my ... hair
For those of you who have issues with my 'dirty' comb: a new comb has been bought and is now being used. No combs have been harmed in any of these tutorials. I promise. Thank you for your concern. ;-)
My asian hair is too stiff for this. Once I put it backwards I get spiked up hair and I look like vegeta. Another side note is that I cannot find my natural side cut. It does not grow to one side but actually stands straight from where it grows out. Basically if I grow my hair out i become a sea urchin. Btw what length is needed to get this style of hair.
0wninguplz for asian hair blow dry it the way u want u might want to use a pre styler. Asian Hair does grow out in that way but like he said u might want to try combing it the opposite way your hair grows and combine with blow dryer so u can get the volume
i like this guy, very natural on camera, should be on tv for anyone having trouble with this style and getting their hair to 'laydown', try shampooing your hair every other day, just rinse with water under the shower on the 'off' day. works for me.
Robin, does the hair become more controllable the longer it gets? My hair right now is disconnected from the sides and is very much an undercut, however the top comes down to just past my eyes. I've been able to do these hairstyles, but I'm not getting the "swoop" and natural grace your hair has. Is it a thing with length?
pomade is the only thing that should be used to recreate any pompadour hair style as it was what orignally used to recreate this style the like of james dean to johnny cash to elvis all used pomade for the reason it works
cameron cowgill Hi Cameron - you've still not responded to me. When you said the "fag on TH-cam" (a comment which you've now deleted), who were you referring to? I should also say, that type of language should never ever be used. Interested to hear back from you.
i never deleted a comment i was just reffering to society as whole the whole conecpt of men using pink fruity smelling gel just seems to me totally feminme
Love this how-to. You're an excellent teacher. I just had my son's hair cut with long on top and DYING to give him a pomp (he's 5... there's no way it'll stay all day. But hey, a mom can dream). ♥ Madeline- try using a round brush to smooth it out without frying your hair. Or, conversely, if you're using a flat iron, spray a protective mist (you can find them at a salon, ask a stylist if they have any heat protection mists or sprays for ironing and blow drying) on your hair first. HTH!!
Thanks. I haven't cleaned it since this video was filmed (over 3 years ago). The bacteria growing on it have created a new community. They have their first ever election in January. All from a comb. Amazing, isn't it?
Hate to break it to whoever watches this, but this isn't a pompadour. It's an undercut. A REAL pompadour is long on ALL sides of your hair and slicked with a much more pronounced BUMP in the top part than in the back...Look at Elvis pretty much, that is what a pompadour is. This guy, bless his heart, good video, is just doing an undercut side part really. Also, if you're doing a pompadour, buy a real pomade from an actual pomade company, not redken or some other OP trash.
You're an idiot. A pompadour has hair on the sides of the head which is slicked UP and BACK to give it a full look. And under-cut is a specific style where the sides are buzzed off and left with the top, hence the term "undercut". Most hair styles are based OFF the pompadour, having various looks of what seems like the same style, but if you go to an ACTUAL barber and ask for a pompadour, the back will be cut much shorter than the front, and the sides will be left long. Ask for a undercut and the top of the hair will remain generally the same length and the back and sides buzzed off very short. Dumbass.
My hair is a one back and sides. Curly hair will be harder to style, but it will give you more volume and a different sort of look. I think you could totally work it!
Try using a deep conditioning treatment (Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is great) to relax your hair. Or try using a lighter (less thick) hair product. Because your hair is so thick, gel might be the best best for you.
Hey Lisa. Really pleased you enjoyed it and that it worked for you. That's very kind of you to link and credit. I'll look out for it. Please do send me a link when it's live. Look forward to seeing your vid. :-)
Brilliant videos, my hair is thick and curly so i have to maintain it with blowdrying and i use the same hairspray as you! I'm currently growing the top out to achieve a good height like yours.
Wow! I have looked through soo many videos on how to do the right hairstyles, and as soon as i found yours I had to subscribe! haha love your videos! Cheers from Los Angeles!
Great vid. To be honest, I have really bad cowlicks (strays) on the left side of my head, could never figure out how to get them to stick. I am going to try the hairspray on hand trick. My hair isn't too long yet, maybe 2.5 - 3", still growing it out. But hoping to have it good soon. Any advice you can give? I currently use P&P Power Pomade, but I feel my hair is too thick and I need more than the usual amount. Like around nickel sized amount. Also, my hair is naturally curly, so I believe growing my hair out, used to be really short, has brought out my curls again. So the front of my hair tips just curl down and do not keep the volume.
thank you robin I have finally found the hair style I tried this hair style today but I flopped it but when I saw you do it the right way I was WOW that's the way now im gonna do this hairstyle everyday Thanks Robin James your the best man you helped me a lot. by the way I use Gel for every hair style I do is that allright and sometimes hairspray.
Not gonna lie man, you're styling is nothing short of amazing. I must ask you though, is wax still a good choice for EXTREMELY thick and wavy hair? I find that styling the front isn't a huge issue, but as I get closer to the back it becomes very difficult to control. I use layrite super hold pomade/wax, quite a bit more than most people who do these videos use. What would you advise as far as hair product and perhaps pre-treatment go in order to manage that kind of hair?
Yes, you should be able to. Make sure your hair is in good condition that it is well moisturised before giving it ago. Hairspray your hand and wave over the top of your hair after to catch any fly-aways, before you hairspray it all. :-)
I don't know why this bit made me laugh so much? Push push push... pushing it through your hair - *fingers* - push push push! :D Great tutorial :) I was trying to do this and kept getting the same sticky out bits... then got frustrated when I couldn't comb them out! I'll give that a go!
Wow I'm in love with this hairstyle. I've never been very adventurous with hair but would like to try this one out. Any tips for getting it cut like this, what do I tell the person cutting my hair to do?
An oil based pomade will eliminate the need for hair spray and will feel less like a jel and more of a natural grease feel. And a Kent comb does wonders especially for part a straight sharp part
Just on the sides, if that is where the problem area is. It sounds like the length isn't conducive to styling down. A deep conditioning treatment will help to soften (/relax) the hair so that it stays down. :-)
Hey there. I always say to work with what you have. My hair is naturally very straight, so would be unable to do a chemical straighten vid. Ask your hairdresser for tips, they may be able to give you some advice. Sorry I can't be more helpful. :-)
nice hair, i love it i actually like to style pompadours as well. but i personally think that you could to a full slick back pompadour instead of a part. thats just my opinion and thats the way i style it. its a great video and you nailed it.
Hey Robin, I was wondering Where else i can buy Kevin Murphy Products and how long do you think my hair should be for me to be able to do a quiff or a comb-over? Thank you and ever since i have watched your videos i've been more careful with my hair!!!!! #Q&A
Haha, this dude is hilarious. So serious, but yet so funny. Thanks for the tutorial mate, really good stuff. You have a bad-ass haircut what are its measurements if you don't mind me asking?
when u get a haircut what do you get on the sides and back ? fist time i got this haircut was like half a year ago and it only came out good once but since my hair grows really fast and is thick and i always have trouble with the right back side of my head cause my hair sticks up(probally cause i cut it to short or comb it the wrong way) and its been 2 months since my last haircut cause my barber messed up my front and back so i have uneven hairs , what could i do to train my hair better I used regualr shampoo and conditioner and manage to brush my front hair to the left and right side down but i have trouble with little hairs in the front side and back also do u get lineups or should i just tell the barber to leave it alone and just get a clean up
Can someone advise me. Can I actually do a Pompadour with hair clay? Currently using a hair styling product named Redken Rough Clay 20. I've been trying to do this hair since I got my haircut 3 weeks back, it never works the way my hairstylist does it for me. One thing I notice is that my hairstylist never uses a comb to create the hair., all he did was blow my hair to the direction that my hair grows (another difference from the video). My hair grows from the left to the right, rather than blowing it from right to left to give it a lift and volume, he blew mine from the original direction and instantaneously achieved a good deal of volume. And right after that, all he did was use hair wax (I mentioned it was a clay, not sure if its a hair wax or clay, just calling it as how my hairstylist addresses it) and push my hair to one side, it was perfectly fine. Added the finishing touch with hairspray and my hair stayed in that shape for the whole day. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? I even recorded the styling process this time round and followed his every movement, yet it fails. I'm not sure if my classifies as a pompadour, maybe it's a comb back? But basically, my hair is combed to one side and it forms this sort of puff. I also notice my hair doesn't have an obvious parting in comparison to the one in the video. A soft hair guy here. Just recently bought a two-in-one shampoo that works as a conditioner as well. Would using conditioner help? I'm not familiar with hair styling products hence I only use hair wax (or clay :S). Helppp~
Any tips for guys with hair slightly more wavy than yours? if I were to slick back my hair it would have some waves in it, and obviously I would want it as straight as I can. Of course I can use my straightener at the beginning, but that usually makes my hair more stubborn in favor of the direction I'm straightening. Know what I mean?
If you have very curly hair, it might be slightly difficult to do. You could, however, try using the curl to give it extra volume. Have a play with it and see what works for you. :-)
i had the same hair length that you did but i made the big mistake of cutting it, i am over regretting it, i jut want to enjoy every level my hair gets to until i get to the one i want, what do you recommend me to do? mine is almost like yours but a little shorter and its not all evenly cut,
I don't comment on videos often, but I wanted to say this was an EXCELLENT tutorial; I love the completeness of it, how you'd included the history as well as tiny, meticulous details (which in my opinion, are crucial for a good pomp). A+, buddy! ^^

lol. just commented (a decade later) in the other video about nobody noticing the comb 😂
thanks for the tutorials 👍
Great tutorial! I've been rocking the Pompadour for a while now. I love it.
Thanks Amy. :-D
My asian hair is too stiff for this. Once I put it backwards I get spiked up hair and I look like vegeta. Another side note is that I cannot find my natural side cut. 0wninguplz for asian hair blow dry it the way u want u might want to use a pre styler. Asian Hair does grow out in that way but like he said u might want to try combing it the opposite way your hair grows and combine with blow dryer so u can get the volume
Maybe u have to get haircut like paul phoenix from tekken
Im asian but i got some what close to his pompadour not near perfect but its ok
This maybe a little late but you can always go to an Asian barber (especially Vietnamese) if available
i like this guy, very natural on camera, should be on tv
for anyone having trouble with this style and getting their hair to 'laydown', try shampooing your hair every other day, just rinse with water under the shower on the 'off' day. works for me.
"poosh poosh poosh"
OMG. I think your video is the most comprehensive and very instructive! Very helpful! Thanks so much.
I love it how he says "Up and over". UP AND OVAH. UP AND OVAH. xD
Ovah, ovah, ovah... oh, and up!
You seem like you would be fun to hang out with aha. Stay steezy bro
Robin James push, push, push!
It’s his accent
Great tutorial, I was a little intimidated trying to recreate what my stylist does, but this made it alot more approachable. Cheers!
Josh Howell Hey Josh, try a dry shampoo before styling. Will give more volume. And also build volume with the comb. :D
Not even gonna respond to such a dumb comment. Robin's hair is impeccable and apparently yours isn't!
pomade is the only thing that should be used to recreate any pompadour hair style as it was what orignally used to recreate this style the like of james dean to johnny cash to elvis all used pomade for the reason it works

😖 God!!! Clean it!
Thanks. I haven't cleaned it since this video was filmed (over 3 years ago). The bacteria growing on it have created a new community. They have their first ever election in January. All from a comb. Amazing, isn't it?
dafuq? i'm voting for bacteria 1!
Robin James that moment when you try to be funny and it doesn't work, jk no hate love your videos
His comb is not dirty, he is using thickening hair dry shampoo which contain brown pigment to make his hair looks thicker. Just to cover the scalp.
🤣🤣🤣
I don't know how this will sound, but I watched this and your quiff video, and you have the most helpful hair style videos on TH-cam.

I don't know how to poosh my hair back
Hey Kevin - I've got a clippered number one back and sides with a disconnected top. Leave the length on top to really work the pomp. :-)

Try using a deep conditioning treatment (Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is great) to relax your hair. Or try using a lighter (less thick) hair product. Because your hair is so thick, gel might be the best best for you.

+Robin James I don't agree with being gay but great video 👌 but I can never do a good pomp lol

Veron Bilali Really :)
Glad you've found a tutorial that works for you.
that hairspray on the hand thing, i've never heard of that before. thank you!
finally a decent pomp video, thanks for uploading Robin great work man
Thank you, Nikita. And thank you for subscribing. :-)
amazing! in my opinion this hairstyle fits you the best
Love the tutorial! You just got yourself a new subscriber! You are like the nicer version of Gordon Ramsey, but about hair! Love it
Cool vid, I have a thin and straight hair tho!! Just wondering if you blow dry your hair first or is it ok even if its wet then make the pomp?
What a well put together, friendly, non-pretentious video! Thank you Robin, this was really informative, and helpful. Best wishes...
Great tutorial :) I was trying to do this and kept getting the same sticky out bits... then got frustrated when I couldn't comb them out! I'll give that a go!
Great tutorial! You actually explained each step unlike other tuts. Yay!
hey robin..great tutorial..whats the perfect length of hair to do the pompa..btw lol you need a new hair comb..
Wow I'm in love with this hairstyle. I've never been very adventurous with hair but would like to try this one out. Any tips for getting it cut like this, what do I tell the person cutting my hair to do?
Yep! Try this: th-cam.com/video/cDYDcAjD_ng/w-d-xo.html
I have the same problem with the 'flyaways' at the back, too, so the tips are really helpful; thanks.
:D
Very good video! First tutorial out of 10 that is easy to understand!
Thx mate
Hey there - I will definitely look it up and see what I can do. :-)
Instructions clearly told and shown, great tutorial! :D
Nice video mate. Very well presented and demonstrated and the hair looks wicked! Will defo give it a go, cheers!
Great vid again! But when I push my hair back it doesn't stay and just flicks back up again? Any tips?
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
An oil based pomade will eliminate the need for hair spray and will feel less like a jel and more of a natural grease feel. And a Kent comb does wonders especially for part a straight sharp part
hey good tip with the hair spray, i always get those randoms! I use layrite pomade for my pomp.
Just on the sides, if that is where the problem area is. It sounds like the length isn't conducive to styling down. A deep conditioning treatment will help to soften (/relax) the hair so that it stays down. :-)
Hey ILLest - Yes, it can. It will have more volume. Or, try straightening it first. See what works for you. :-)
love love love your video.. i just did this hair cut on my son... so fancy
i just want to say thank you:) u changed my life:)
Hey there. I always say to work with what you have. My hair is naturally very straight, so would be unable to do a chemical straighten vid. Ask your hairdresser for tips, they may be able to give you some advice. Sorry I can't be more helpful. :-)
Glad you like it!
Thank you. Glad you liked it. :D
Yes! Best pomp video I've watched! Thanks!
Hi Robin, if you hair doesn't want to go flat what do I do? By the way, great video!
nice hair, i love it i actually like to style pompadours as well. but i personally think that you could to a full slick back pompadour instead of a part. thats just my opinion and thats the way i style it. its a great video and you nailed it.
Hey man u put up great videos. I'm trying to get my hair like urs any advice?? And thanks 4 the great vids :)
thank you! very helpful advice, mine gets kinda flat but I realize what I did wrong! thanks again :)
Hey Robin. I was wondering. When you go to the hair dressers, what do you ask to have done in order to get your hair like it is?
Thanks!!
good one, mate. Thank you for this short tutorial! I like it short, pretty easy to follow and understand. Cheers! :)
tutorial plus history... GENIUS!
crane zedie 😄
Nice video man!! I was looking for a tutorial for this hairstyle, thx!
Hey Bryan. Thank you - on both counts!
