what a difference in quality of life! I wouldnt have known about this splint if I hadnt seen your video. I ordered it online, then went back to the orthopaedist to make sure it would be ok. She said, Oh sure. Those are great! We just don't have any. !!!!???? Well, I have it now, and the past 2 months have been much more comfortable than they would have been if I had stayed with the giant splint they originally gave me. I have another week to go.
The Oval-8 works pretty well for mallet finger, but it will irritate the top of your knuckle after awhile. I use a round bandaid underneth the band to cushion it. You can get Oval-8's "gel mate" but they are pricey, and a bandaid works.. it just can get wet. What's nice about the Oval-8 is it is very small and can get wet- so good for the daytime. But by night your finger will be sick of it, and thats when I switch to a cheapo CVS aluminum & velcro finger splint (the 2 joint length). The foam cushions my finger at night and lets it recoup from the hard Oval-8. You need to adjust both types of splints to get *HYPER-EXTENSION* of the joint for mallet finger if you want the best healing. For the aluminum splint, you just bend the aluminum to arc the fingertip up a bit. For the Oval-8, you will need to heat-adjust (they have a video on youtube showing how) ..they use a heatgun in the video, but I found an Aim-A-Flame an inch or two away from the splint will get it shiney as described in their video, and you can press it down and get the hyperextension. This tightens the splint a bit, so use it on one that is jjust slightly big to begin with. As far as sizing- its tricky.. I went through 3 combo packs to find my size.. and it will vary due to swelling, etc. Probably best to drop the $40 on the sizing ring..
Excellent! Thank for all the info. I see a hand surgeon tomorrow, a week after my injury and have kept it straight in a big splint, like you did. I like the oval-8. I did it washing a spot out of my carpet with a wash cloth. I play the harp, so I'm rather anxious.
Thanks for posting this. I injured my finger three days ago and could only find the aluminum splint at drug store. Will definitely order the Oval 8 ring. Hope I can put it on without allowing finger to bend.
My doctor told me to slowly bend it each day to rehabilitate it. If you want to, you can see a physical therapist. For me, I just bent it a few time a day for a few months and it's almost back to normal. I still tape it for playing sports as a safety precaution.
that's good to hear. the only thing about the oval 8 splint is that my middle finder is a bit bloated after 6 weeks. not sure if it's scar tissue or not, but the finger extension is pretty straight.
yes, if it does not heal, the doctor will advise to have surgery by inserting a metal rod. That was my motivation to make sure the splint was on my finger 24/7 for 6 weeks.... to avoid that surgery. some people on youtube show the aftermath of the surgery and scared the crap out of me.
Thanks for the video. I wish I had seen this before. Basically without the splint, it take more than 6 months to heal so the recommendation is definitely good
thanks for the video! I'm about 2-3 weeks in and splinting it, but I haven't been real happy with my splints. I'm planning to order the ones you showed.
Thanks for the information brother really helped out big time just happened to me today at work luckily I had a finger splint nearby now I know what types of other splints are out there thank you and keep making videos!!!
Hey man, thanks for the video.. Very informative. I wish I'd diagnosed my mallet finger earlier so I wouldn't let it droop while taking it out of the drugstore splint to check on it. Just got the Oval-8 splint today and it fit nicely.
Thanks so much! I just bought the variety pack (or whatever it's called) on Amazon and can't wait to get them. I've been using Stax and have the same issues that you mentioned about typing and keeping the finger dry.
Wish that I had seen this nine weeks ago! After wearing the one he used for playing basket ball for eight weeks my finger is essentially the same as after being injured. Even if the figure eight splint didn't produce better results, the nuisance factor and discomfort, wearing latex gloves for showering etc wouldn't have been much of an issue.
For me, it didn't hurt bending it back as the tendon was torn. It's best that you have the doctor examine it. Last, better to suffer pain for a few moments than a lifetime of pain if you don't take care of it properly.
Thanks for this information. I have been using the Stax splint on my pinky finney for two weeks and I have slivered l encountered the same problems that you mention. I will be trying the Oval 8. Thanks again!
My finger has been straight for 7 weeks, I have taken the splint off and my finger is mostly straight. I can only bend it a little because the joint is very stiff. What did you do to get the mobility back in your finger? Thanks, the video was very helpful.
No, I did not need to spot heat. The reason why it gets looser or tighter on different days is due to the your body temperature adjusting to outside temperatures. If it's a hot day, you finger will expand to release heat from your body. On a cold day or night, the finger and blood vessels will constrict to conserve heat and warmth. Therefore, it will be a looser fit. I would recommend changing in and out of two oval 8 splints on different days. Water also has this effect - hot or cold showers.
Thanks for a most informative video. My left hand little finger has somehow sustained this damage and I was wondering what to use to resolve it. Of the selection that you demonstrated, the Oval 8 seems to be the ideal item.
Thanks for the video, I just sustained the injury over the weekend and have already noticed how inconvenient the splint is. For the Oval-8 splint, did you end up taping it to make sure it didn't slide off, or did you find it stayed pretty snug once you figured out the right size?
I have the exact same injury playing baseball which i incurred just yesterday,im using a stax splint..! ...im worried it wont be 100% perfect after the 6-8 week period, cause i play guitar...hows you finger now..? coincidentally my injury was also the middle finger left hand...!
I sustained this injury a week ago and just picked up the Stacks. This injury can be pretty annoying, but could have been worse. Its been over a year since this video was posted and Im curious to know if the original poster achieved full range of motion and is now back to normal? i have the "mallet fracture"..
It shouldn't put too much pressure on it. It should function to prevent your joint from bending. If it's too much pressure, then you might want to try a larger oval 8 splint?
Well, the doctor wants to examine it to see if it healed properly. When I went, he measured if it was straight. Also, you need to be able to flex the finger. I couldn't flex 100%. So I had to manually flex it each day as a rehabilitation method to get to 100% flexion. It's always a good idea to visit the doctor, but if it costs you a lot of money, then it's up to you if you want to forego it.
You don't need to cover your hand when you shower for the oval 8 splint. The doctor should tell you if you can play basketball. I would use the Staxx splint if you decide to play and tape it up. It's up to you and the doctor to decide how to tape it up. I did tape one finger and the splint fell off a few times which is not good if you need to splint it for 6 weeks. If it was me, I would stay off playing ball for six weeks if you are playing league/school ball.
Great comparison. I work for 3-Point Products, manufacturer of the Oval-8 splints, & can confirm that ucberk599 does NOT work for us. More information: - The product is called Oval-8 finger splint. - Each splint fits different depending on which side is put on first - It's best to have a health care provider do the fitting as the splint can be modified. In your case it appears to limit motion of two joints when it should only limit motion in one. Our website has more info.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience...It looks like there are different sizes of the oval 8 rings (8 and 9) .... Today I have a bulky thing on my finger and I am just in my third day !!!! lot of days ahead of me !!!
I had this happen to me a few weeks ago but instead of the tendon snapping the tendon fractured the joint in my finger and then I had to get surgery to have 2 pins that go through my skin and into the bone. The first 8-10 days I had a splint that completely made it so I could not see or move any of my fingers or my wrist. I got that off yesterday and now I have a kind of shield splint that protects the pins from hitting things. I also have to clean them twice a day for another 4 weeks then they get taken out and then another 4 weeks for the holes in my finger to heal. So the whole healing process takes roughly 8-10 weeks
I just messed up my middle finger and my ring finger on my right hand at school playing catch and i caught the football wrong and yeah it messed up 2 of them like how yours was
Thanks for the video, I have a question for you. I have been wearing a splint for 7 weeks. Do I have to go to my doctor to remove it or can I just take it off? And what are the procedures that follow after you no longer wear the splint?
Thanks for the informative video! Is the size for the stax splint the same as for the oval 8? For example, if I have a size 2 stax splint would it coincide witht he size 2 oval 8?
Little finger right hand from basketball when trying to get a stupid rebound. . . 1st time, this really sucks since i play piano. I'm probably retired from basketball (& since Kobe is retired) because of this. I'm at the 6 weeks mark now and wearing the one with holes, i take it off when i shower is that ok? I'm still wearing it most of the time. I take it off during the day for exercises, is the tendon strong enough that i can start gaining the bend again? The specialist doctor said do exercises in warm water, why's that..? Still looks a little swollen, it's better than first injured but not perfectly straight yet. Thanks for sharing
Really helpful video, just got mallet finger today, right ring finger while playing volley. Great which splint you recommend for playing sports because I need to compete tomorrow but probably shouldn't like you said. Better to be safe than sorry
does ur doctor knows about this oval 8 splint? and how long u had the injury?? i have the same injury same finger on the L hand, and my doctor gave me thr plastic splint.
It's so annoying because I can't bent it ....its my ring finger.....but I really can't bend it otherwise it feels like my finger gonna break or something or dislocate it it kills if I try to ,,,,...and I'm going hospital and I'm really scared that they are going to bend it straight to get the splint on and I'm going to be in agony or something please reply
I have mallet finger along with an associated break on my right ring finger from a basketball game 10 days ago. I only got this type of splint on Saturday, however and the doctor said to keep it on non-stop for 6 weeks. I just have a couple questions. Should I cover up my hand when I'm taking a shower? Does it feel uncomfortable or hurt when shooting with the splint on? Did you wear extra tape or tape two fingers together when playing with the splint on?
i went through flexor tendon repair surgery after my middle finger was snapped down the middle in a fight...i went to the rehab clinic and since i waited too long to see a specialist, my finger did not heal properly, i can hyper-extend ever finger except my middle finger, its also permanently swollen and bigger than my other fingers. it bothers the shit out of me and i dont know what i can do to fix it, a 2nd operation, splints? if anyone knows what i can do to be able to get my backflex back
ok. so u really don't want it 2 bend at ALL at all at all 4 those 6-8 wks huh. good 2 know :o 1 wk in, using a metal type 1 & yea, giving the 'finger' 2 evry1 at work at the bank all day haha ;p thk u 4 the video! v helpful! def gonna get those other 2 splints cuz this 1 is awful for washing, working etc & 2 mos is a loong time. :/ thk u 4 this! (sidenote, do u want it 2 hyper-extend (up) the other way a bit, 4 healing? (& how would 1 do that?) thx) p.s. Ultimate Frisbee is awesome ;) haha
Thank you for giving me 100 times more info than the doctor....
im so pissed about this injury

Thanks so much for this video dude totally helped with my recovery, my doctors didn't know what they were doing...
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing. (and the recommendation to purchase the full ring of Oval-8 splints was also excellent)
Very helpful video! I injured the same finger a week ago and am relieved to see your progress; i hope mine heals as well too! Thanks again

Awesome! This is a sucky injury...I sustained it tonight. I hate these splints I've got, the oval 8 looks amazing! Great video

I didn't splint mine, doctors didn't tell me to, that's a big mistake. Swelling goes down but it's stuck on mallet mode for good.
Thank you!! This helped my hubby so much!
You are the man, thank you for posting this video!!!

Same incident I fell of my bike I was just wondering if they have any sizes for the pinkie
Wow i have the same experience! thanks you for the info, now i don't need to use the big metal splint!
Glad it worked out for you.
does ur doctor knows about this oval 8 splint? and how long u had the injury?? i have the same injury same finger on the L hand, and my doctor gave me thr plastic splint.

I would see a hand specialist doctor for this...maybe a few opinions may help you come to a final decision.
would you still be able to play lets say volleyball with this on?
My middle part of my pinky wont straighten out what do i need??? Please????? ;( need answer
can you still play volleyball with this oval 8?
from where i can get this .i searched in amazon but couldnt find the product
great video. Thanks
My mate hurt is finger like yours but his is going to the left like a sideways hook
Thanks! You helped me a lot. Damn basketball lol.
