    Thanks for the Video, very useful content. Can you tell me the easiest way of automatically deleting Newsletters after 7 days of receiving them?

    • @JasonMorrell
      @JasonMorrell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the *Conditions* step of the *Rules Wizard* you could choose ' *received in a specific date span* ' but you have to use fixed dates, so it is not automatic.
      As an alternative approach, you could create a *Search Folder* , which would lists any email that meets a set of criteria. You could then review the list and delete whenever you wanted. It's not automatic but it's the best option I can think of.
      In your case your settings would be as follows:
      1. At the bottom of your mail folder list, right click on *Search Folder* and choose *New Search Folder* .
      2. At the bottom of the preset options list choose *Create a custom Search Folder* and click the *Choose button* .
      3. Name the search folder ' *Newsletters older than 7 days* ' and click the *Criteria* button.
      4. In the dialog, in the *Messages* tab, type ' *Newsletter* ' (or whatever is appropriate) into the *Search for the words* box.
      5. In the *Advanced* tab, click the *Field* button, click *Date/Time fields* , click *Received* .
      6. Change *Anytime* to *On or Before* . In the *Value* box, type *=TODAY()-7* . This is an Excel-style formula that calculates the date 7 days prior to the current day, and it automatically recalculates every day. You can change the 7 to any number up to 31. That seems to be a restriction specific to Outlook.
      7. Click the *Add to List* button then click *OK* twice to close the dialog boxes.
      Let me know how you go.

    My AOL in Outlook has a “Bulk” folder. I get about 100 crap emails per day and I just “select all” and shift-delete.
    I tried “right click” and under properties for “Bulk” and under the “Auto Archive” tab I selected “Archive this folder using these settings”.
    “Clean out items older than” I selected "1 day" and “Permanently delete old items”. Doesn’t work.
    Is there a Rule I can set up to permanently delete any mail that arrives in that folder as it arrives?

    • @JasonMorrell
      @JasonMorrell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      AOL has its own spam control which puts everything into the Bulk Mail folder. Outlook then synchronises that folder. Having done some quick research, it appears that you cannot delete this folder, set up any rules for emails in this folder or even mark senders as 'Safe' or an email and 'Not Junk'. The Archive settings you have described would normally work, but perhaps in the same vein, you cannot archive the contents of a folder that is ultimately controlled by AOL.
      I didn't realise AOL was still around. I thought they had died off years ago! It might be worth considering an email reset by signing up with a new outlook.com account, or even two - one for email from trusted friends and colleagues, and a second one for any newsletters or other things that you sign up for (this is where the bulk of the junk/spam messages originate from). You can display both email accounts within Outlook. Obviously, you would need to notify your contact list of your new address but it would kill the spam in the short term, and any future spam could be controlled with the Outlook Rules Wizard.
      I hope this helps.

    I have thousands of emails I need to delete but there's several I need to keep from certain people. Is there a way to not delete groups of people from my contact list without having to disselect them individually?

    • @JasonMorrell
      @JasonMorrell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jill. It is not possible (as far as I know) to include or exclude people based on whether or not they are in your contact list.
      The approach I would personally take, and it's up to you whether you follow the same path, is:
      1. Create a folder for each person whose email you wish to keep.
      2. In the search bar, type or paste in the first few characters of the person's email address, then select the correct one from the predictive results.
      3. Check that the emails look correct then press Ctrl A to select all the emails that are listed.
      4. Drag them all into the folder you just created.
      5. Repeat for each contact.
      6. When you have processed each person whose email you wish to keep, the remaining emails in your inbox should all be ones you wish to delete, so check one final time then go ahead and delete them.
      I hope that helps. All the best.

      There are 2 versions of Outlook - the browser version and the desktop app. If you are using Outlook through your browser, it is a cut-down version of the real thing and this is the probable reason you cannot find some of the features mentioned.
      For the date filter:
      1) Select Advanced Find.
      2) Select the Advanced tab.
      3) Click the Field button.
      4) Select Date/Time fields > Received.
      5) In the Condition box, choose 'On or before'
      6) In the Value box enter the date. Depending on your computer' regional date/time settings you may have to enter dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy. If you get it the wrong way around, this could be why your results are messed up.
      Let me know how you go.

    So, I have accumulated over 4,500 tons unread junk mails too in last several years. There are some specific ppls I'd like to keep and many I dont and have probably never read, help.

    • @JasonMorrell
      @JasonMorrell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi honey owen. Only 4,500. You're doing well! Here is what I suggest.
      1. Pick a person whose email you want to keep and create a folder with their name.
      2. Select the Inbox. In the Search bar, type their name and press Enter. This will list all the emails from that person.
      3. Press Ctrl A to select all the listed emails.
      4. Hover over any email and click-and drag to your new folder (and release the mouse button).
      5. If there are more emails than can be listed (the limit is normally 100) then you may repeat the search again for this person.
      6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each person whose emails you wish to keep.
      7. Scroll through your Inbox until you can find no more emails you wish to keep.
      8. Press Ctrl A to select all emails, Press Delete.
      9. Repeat step 8 until your Inbox is empty.
      10. To reduce the amount of promotional clutter you receive in the future, go to Unroll.me, plug in your email address and accept all the permissions (if you agree). This tools finds every single email list you are on and lists them all for you. Some you will recognise and many you won't. You can simply tick the ones you never want to hear from again and Unsubscribe. Hope this helps.

    I have thousands of email messages - many of which are threads. So, rather than painfully and laboriously say selecting 19 messages and deleting them but keeping the 20th one (because that was the last message which has all the previous history) - how do I do it in bulk to all emails? Hope you see what I mean. Is there a way to tell outlook to automatically delete all the threads and just keep the last one across the whole of my inbox?

    More complicated the programs such as outlook become the less likely I will use them. It has reached the level of a IT professional just to use it efficiently. I am not a IT guy. It was suppose to be a tool not a full time job to simply use it.
    When I fly, I am not required to rip into the walls of an Airbus to know how it works nor am I required to be proficient as the pilot. What these programs have done is to arrogantly demand that we, the users/customers, become their bitch.

    • @JasonMorrell
      @JasonMorrell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Point taken Paul.
      You use what you need to use. Some people like yourself just need the basics, in which case simplified systems like Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook Online etc. will be sufficient. If you work in a large organisation, Outlook will be the default email service and you often need the more powerful features on offer.
      Horses for courses.

      @@JasonMorrell Long time ago I started my adventure with Autocad 9. Processor speed was 285Hz. Things improved up to a point then all went to hell in a hand basket when some dumb ass decided to make more money by forcing everyone into subscription based web participation. On top of the usual glitches of the AutoCad code, we had massive problems with the internet speed and reliability on top of that. Unless you had IT living with you, you were effectively screwed and relegated to the back of the bus with your design office. I just had another "update" to Outlook today I did not asked for and now I cannot find my ribbon! It is infuriating as there is not enough time of the day for me to master this problem which I did not cause to myself on top of the 5 full time jobs I already have and must perform perfectly. You understand my frustration??

      @@JasonMorrell There isn't one.
      I never bitch about nothing or make problems for others until there is a valid cause.
      I am using another disaster of a machine: MacBook Pro (with all bells and whistles) that does its own thing wether I like it or not.
      I inadvertently pressed "whats new in outlook" few hours ago and all my crap changed! I got colors all over (irritating, loud, designed by women fashion designers clashing with my male brain designed for shades of black-white). I tried several YT videos and there is nothing on this subject. I need to know how to go back to my previous settings....
