Awesome video thanks Ronny been trolling internet for pics and videos of this truck but this is the first in depth information there is. See you Friday at the show
As much as I love the Landcruiser for its simplicity, when you step back and think about it, for the price you pay you get next to nothing apart from 4WD capabilities and virtually when you get one the owner has to spend thousands on modifying it just to get it up to scratch, severely lacking in interior, still living in the 80's (but thats why some love it), for a car that expensive to be lacking in IT, nice interior, wheels, safety features, decent seats, some air bags. And only now they have cruise control? Yes, extremely reliable though, Lucky they have thousands of fan boys coz it's really not actually worth more than $40,000ish.
Change emissions to a level that is not street legal for newer cars anymore. Actually not much of an issue out in the bush, but small particles from diesel engines are a problem in the bigger cities, therefore those DPFs are mostly standard now. Some newer cars even have urea injection systems to keep the nitrous oxide levels below a certain level. People want to get rid of those systems as they cost some performance (like catalyzers do) and seem to be all unecessary to them.
I'm in Perth. I have a 76 GXL 2015. I Love it. Pro's: Love the bonnet, Love the new 5th gear , Love the bonnet. Nice new seats, love the new bonnet still,,,,, Thats about it. Cons: Dont like the DPF, Dont like traction control, rather mechanical LSD but I can see why they did it for compliance. Now, the Jury is still out on the following: The injectors. Have they changed them due to the alleged Denso injector problem and Toyota blaming the poor fuel or is that B/S.Somebody please educate me on that. That can be a costly exercise and might even incur a new engine!!! I have placed another water separator filter before the factory fuel filter. Am I safe with that. The bloody rear track width,,,,They should of done that!!!!! Grrrrrr, Cant wait to see the up-grades,,,,, Thank you for the up-load,,,
spacers are only illegal if you change the wheel track, lc70 wheel track in the gov system is recorded off the widest point which is the front. So if you only make the rear match the front, you're not altering the vehicle track, thus legal.
Ronny, thank you so much for the great review. I hope this model comes to India sometime soon. However, not many offroad or utility inclined customers. But lovely vehicle really. Its still a pleasure to own a 60 series!
Ronny Dahl It was in the 3 articles written that ASPW referred to in the review..... 1) www.caradvice.com.au/493078/2017-toyota-landcruiser-70-series-review 2) www.caradvice.com.au/452116/2017-toyota-landcruiser-70-series-more-power-and-torque-extra-features/?source=plista 3) www.caradvice.com.au/492852/2017-toyota-landcruiser-70-series-pricing-and-specs/ The rpm and gearing info is in the above links. stated : less than 2000 rpm at 110km per hour
I am so glad we still have the 1HZ here in South Africa. Slower but lovely, solid and timeless. Piezo injection..... DPF?? Hahahaha. Grab a chair and make sure you sit down when you get the quotation to replace your high pressure piezo common rail injectors when they fail at 100,000km. If all else fail, reboot your “computer” engine. Hehe
I know on the big 18 wheelers here in the US some, if not all, of the DPF filters are ceramic. They don't like hard knocks. Any concerns there in regards to off road use? Also, cleaning them involves special equipment. If your local shop doesn't have a cleaner they have to send them elsewhere.
With minimal maintenance that should last a lifetime. Our 1997 4Runner Limited is long paid off and it runs like the day we drove it off the lot with more than 350,000 miles currently. I had a 2002 Sequoia Limited that I sold that had 190,000 miles trouble free miles. Our newest Yota is a 2013 Highlander Hybrid Limited with 150,000 miles and it still gets close to 30mpg even with my heavy foot. We tend to buy all our Yota's new and drive them into the ground. My family has owned numerous makes over the decades but we eventually settled on Toyota for their reliability and high resale value even at 10 years old. My next Yota will be a 2020 Lexus LX 570.
Are they stupidly expensive as they are in Australia? I live in the Northern Territory and quite a few of these dual cabs get around. Often with exhaust work done. Creates a satisfyingly deep growl. Want!
The DPF delete has already been sorted. Just autos cracked it last week. The took delivery on the Monday and were running a full three inch turbo back system with no check engine lights or fault codes on the Thursday.
The DPF systems have been confirmed to start fires. Modifications to the exhaust is very difficult because it upsets the pressure sensors and the ECU. Not sure how Toyota will treat warranty with modifications to the exhaust. Piezo injectors are used because of their ability for super fast operation that is required by the DPF systems. Hino systems can have up to 5 injections per cycle. Australian fuel is of very poor quality compared to world standards, good fuel filtration is very important with common rail systems
Happy U R showing This as I will Be ordering one, But will get it Duel Cab Chassis as Getting it converted to 6 x 4 ..They have already told me They will put 2 new Axles to the width off the front Axle Will tell Toyota I do not want the back seats in #. As I will fit 2 single seats in with a fridge in the Middle also Yes the 3" exhaust is getting fitted
Probably worth mentioning that the new single cab 79s are ANCAP rated at 5 stars, as opposed to the current pathetic 3 star rating. Great chance in my opinon.
Ronny great video looking for more videos on how to fix that rear axel to run on the same trac as the front axel. thanks again for sharing your knowledge
1:30 GM tried that forward-facing scoop on the Z-28 IIRC. They had to stop using it because in the rain it scooped water into the engine compartment. Have you had any issues with water getting in there?
Here in the southwest US (Nevada) alot of our construction worker trucks are Diesel (Ford powerstroke) with dpf's, haven't heard of one instance of it causing fires during regeneration.
That truck is beautiful. The hood is the best part. Got into a fender bender a few years ago with my Ranger. It was a b*tch to find another bulge hood to replace it.
Just for comparison purposes. I measured these same points for both the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (Hard Rock edition JK series) 2 door and 4 door versions (I'm in America...so export versions may differ). The wheelbase of the 2 door measured right at 8 feet. The 4 door measured 9' 9". The wheel track front and rear for both are right at 70", or 5' 10" (interestingly the same as the Landcruiser in this video). The clearance to the bottom of the differentials (front and back) are 9.5" with the stock 31" tires. Both 2 door and 4 door Jeeps here in the US run a 3.6 liter v6 (gasoline engine) that puts out 285 horsepower and 260 foot/lbs or torque. I had to find an conversion site to figure out the readings from this video, but it seems the Toyota puts out 146 horse power and 258 foot/lbs of torque. To reverse the equations, the Jeep puts out 212Kw and 352 Newton meters. Of course I've not dyno'ed my Jeep, I'm taking the stats from here: www.jeep.com/en/wrangler/capability/ The output to the rear wheels could very well be less. I have both in my garage, I did the same sort of tape measurements Ronny did in this video and no I'm not saying one thing is better than another or anything like that. Just thought some folks might want to know how the new Jeeps compare.
The only time a DPF gets hotter than a cat is when it's doing it's burn/cleanse. Highway driving will normally allow the ecu to start dpf clean automatically. That accessories fuse box is for when genuine accessories are fitted so all the fuses are in the one spot and you don't have inline fuses coming off your battery.
Hi Ronney your issue with the DPF is what happened with the original catalytic converters way back when!! they were setting fires all over farms and bushland in aus as they were reaching temperatures of 600-700 degC. I believe thats why factory cats are either ceramic coated or have a heat shield.
Having a DPF isn't a problem, just make sure don't park on areas where grass or sticks are likely to catch fire. Our 4x4 fire trucks all have DPF's, and we know not to ever park in long grass. But that common sense applies to any vehicle parking on dry grass.
Dear Toyota, Please bring the 79 series to the States. You can call it farm equipment so you don't have to pass all the stupid emissions and safety stuff.
Have a 2019 LX 79 cruiser, predominantly for towing a 3 tonne caravan I live in. What are your thoughts on engine remapping, and/or exhaust upgrade with DPF in mind?
Tsaki Tx I can tell you that the Duramax will not last as long. Cummins is excellent though. I love the 70 Series Cruiser. I wish we had them in the states.
I wonder how much it would cost to open the gearbox up and put the new fifth gear in while having the gearbox out for clutch upgrade on the older model
I can't speak for the Toyota auto hubs but the old North American auto hubs don't disengage if you have it in 4 wheel drive. For them to disengage you have to shift in 2 wheel drive and they will eventually disengage. To disengage you have to drive the opposite direction in 2 wheel drive for about 10 feet. In other words, the wheel has to turn faster than the shaft it's attached to. The big problem with auto hubs is if they suffer high shock while engaging. In other words, if you get stuck in 2 wheel drive, put it in 4 wheel drive and give it the beans immediately. You will wreck them. You had to gingerly rock it back and forth several times to make sure they were completely engaged and then you were good to go. It was not the best system for here. I do like that Toyota have added a manual locking capability. Just lock them before you go wheeling and then you're sure to have them ready if you get stuck.
The rear wheel track is just ridiculous !!!! LOVE the bonnet !! pity you can't get a single cab without curtain air bags !! I think the DPF thingy is going to make people second guess themselves to where they can or should go just in case they start a scrub fire and your trapped in it !! Great review thanks !! Seeya Rob
Just about to get one either this week or next week, same colour in GXL variant that you have here. Will have to get the in line particulate filter upgraded hopefully once more $$ walks through the door
The rear track is smaller so weight in the tray is centred more over the wheels as possible as the cruiser floating axle setup often sees the bearings or hub fail due to overloading causing the axle and hub to slide out of the diff. The old girls are common for it so I think this is their quick fix for it while keeping the 3 tonne GVM where the older models are only 2800
Wish we had them in Canada as well. Worked in Africa for years as a driller and loved these trucks. Excellent diesel program.. Well maybe with jeep coming out with there 2019 wrangler pickup truck it may spark toyota to wake up and make there trucks available here in canada Not a big jeep fan but it will be the closest thing close to the landcruiser i can get. To bad jeep will end up selling more than 100,000 units before end of first year in USA ,wont be able to keep up with demand. Please Toyota respond to this and bless us here in Canada
luv the Bonnet and thats about it. everything else pretty much seems the same. will be inyeresting to see if tbere are perfomance gains due to the new injectors and any restrictions due to the DPF ? agree with everything you said regarding wheel track and vhild restraints and a 6th Gear and im certain Most 79 series owners will agree. thanks for the Vid Ronny great as always
I'm about to buy a 2002 3rd Generation toyota 4runner. I was worried about the age of the car but looking at this LC built for 2017, I'm going for that 4runner with a lot more confidence
Kufre Udobong Why has this video given you confidence regarding the 4Runner? Just curious. Personally I have confidence in Toyota in general as far as age and durability is concerned I'm even considering a 60 Series.
James I was a bit worried about the outdated interior of the 3rd gen. Actually in my country (Nigeria), a foreign used 3rd gen costs a little about a locally used 4th gen. I just have concerns about that 4.0L V6
Kufre Udobong Very few SUVs have a more reliable engine than the 4.0. Keep the oil changes on time and it will run forever. my brothers has 297,000 miles on it U.S.
I work on lots of cars and in general I've seen toyotas with lots of miles and seen Chevrolets with lots of miles it's all down to the first and second owner and how well was the car taken care of
Hey Ronny the only trouble I have had with the dpf in my 2010 D40 Navara is it got so hot that it melted the sensors that monitor the module. Great fun hey? Not! luckily I had just come off the tracks after a week away down in the coorong of sa and sent my car into limp mode for the 100+km drive home at 60kmph.
firstly thank you so much for this video and secondly, I have this question. What if water in any under circumstances enter through the bonnet scoop does it effect on the car even with high quantity of water .finally thank you again
luv the Bonnet and thats about it. everything else pretty much seems the same. will be inyeresting to see if tbere are perfomance gains due to the new injectors and any restrictions due to the DPF ? agree with everything you said regarding wheel track and vhild restraints and a 6th Gear and im certain Most 79 series owners will agree.
the GXL has chrome grille, exterior door trims, bucket seats, carpet, alloy wheels, choice of more colours and central locking, electric windows and a few more upgrades, Cheers Rolly
Hey Ronny, I'm looking to get one of these in a couple of months. Cheers for telling us about the child restraints, I'll make sure they install them when the time comes. I am curious though, do you find the overhand length of the stock tray to be a problem when going off-road ?
Good video , I also believe no more split rim wheels due to mining co.'s safety requirements I wouldn't buy one because I reckon Toyota are treating customers with disdain. i.e wheel track not the same , gearing too low( still ) , cabin a throwback , suspension RS , engine thirsty and not thermodynamicaly efficient ( taller gears would of course help) , and for all this an outrageous price
dont think the dpf will be a problem as their is plenty of petrol vehicles out thie with catalysts that get to similar temps and are not causng fires out bush. also the piezoelectric injectors are a crystal which when applied with a small electric field it expands opening the injector when it is discharged it returns to its normal state this making it a quiet and efficient injector DO NOT UNPLUG when testing with vehicle running as this could cause the injector to completely jam open causing run ons etc.
Is this back to the fututre? Marty Marty! I need to tell you about the future! Oh my god the price changes but the features (and performance) remain the same! Except for the bonnet scoop and ... ripplesz?
Still the same spot. We have sealed alternators if you go through a lot of mud and constantly changing/cleaning them though. A lot of mines are now running these.
Great video and really pissed off they didn't fix the track. Wonder what its like looking over the bonnet. Hopefully there will be one at the Perth 4wd show as coming down from Broome.
That thing is hideous, Ronnie. They really thrashed that front end. You can always count on Toyota to screw up a decent design. Our market is littered with preposterous looking Toyotas (like that new Prius!) Yours is so much better looking and it lacks all that extra complexity that would probably be a liability out in the bush (SC airbags). I've got an '06 FJ100 that has the side curtain airbags. I press and hold the RSCA button and hope for the best! If they pop, the truck is totaled! Thanks for the great channel and cheers, mate. PS, yes the DPF system will start dry bush on fire. The ATV's do it all the time around here. Especially if you have under body protectors and grass just sits in there.
That particle filter's no big beal . I had my 200 series for 6 months now and I never had to use it yet . There's a gauge in that tells you when it gotta be done no 1-10 I'm sitting on 2 if you take the vehicle for a hiway run it cleans it out . But if you do have to use it it says it's a 20 minute procedure just don't do it on dry grass
Good video m8. Its a nice vehicle however those issues you've mentioned are serious considering the price tag. Can't believe that Toyota couldn't make it more user friendly. Its not a bloody town car but HD offroad truck! I wish I could have one....but stay with my disco td5. Cheers
Man, wished we got those in the states!
And the UK
It's a shame. A big shame too that the EU won't allow the Land Cruiser 200 anymore. :(
Sadly the 70 Series would compete directly with the US-built Tacoma which is more profitable for Toyota, so I doubt it would ever be sold in the US.
P Pha yes it is a shame we dont have these in the US.
we also have the hilux in a much smaller market. they dont really compete with each other. the landcruiser os waaaayyy more expensive. its more expensive than a tundra even. not sure that north america would accept a $90k dual cab with a vinyl floor.
"No speakers in the back but 3 ash trays in the front" yeeeeah Fukin straya 🇦🇺
Man I wish Toyota sold this design in the us. Love the look of the new scoop
the new one will be plus it'll have better engine and same size track width . A 6.6 litre sisu diesel and 6 jetrag man box in .. 8 months ...
i thought u guys have Yota cruisers?, islamic state seems to get them with ease.
Holy crap its the late 90's..... but its 2017? I WANT THESE IN CANADA !!!
oh no you dont, u need a f 350 or Nissan titan mans machine.
conmanumber1 no
In North America we had DPF in our trucks and a tuner allowed us to straight pipe them and make the real hidden power.
Awesome video thanks Ronny been trolling internet for pics and videos of this truck but this is the first in depth information there is. See you Friday at the show
Thanks Ronnie. Great stuff. Hoping to get me one, probably a Troopy.
Please do a link up with Ronnie when you come to Aus. That's definitely some content worth watching :)
Cheers Andrew, I've seen your other Troopy builds so I can only imagine what you got in store for the next one!
Andrew, should we be expecting you to change your channel name to 6xOverland!?
Just ordered a new dual-cab - delivery early Jan. New spec. What tyres would you recommend for WA. Muds or ATs?
you got it with shower

The iPhone of 4x4's. A couple of small changes and its amazing
Might forget to put the DPF back on when the 3 inch exhaust is installed ;)
What would that do?
P.C. Gornmad by law if your vehicle comes with an emission device you cannot remove it

'there's no speakers in the back, but there's three ashtrays.' because straya hahaha
Ronny, in reading the press release, 2nd gear was also changed, in addition to 5th gear.
The press release also said that at 110kmph that it was UNDER 2000 rpm.
+Gen Kanai I wasn't aware of that, didn't get to drive it much but that will be for another video.
Ronny Dahl It was in the 3 articles written that ASPW referred to in the review.....

yea the dpfs are weak as fuck and you cannot clean them. it has to be reconditioned or replaced
Outstanding video mate 🙏🙏🙏
Wish these were available in Canada!! Beauty beard Ronny!!!
surely addressed the clutch issue!!

Very nice review Ronny. Congrats on the new truck.
+YoHo18 thanks mate. But it's not my new truck.
Ronny Dahl ah! I dunno got an impression of that. ;). I hope a new trip video coming soon. Also, please make a trip to eastern seaboard sometimes!!
wow what a comprehensive review, thanks a lot man! look forward to the next instalment!

Dry spinifex is very easy to set alight, even a cat converter or normal exhaust can do it sometimes. A hot DPF is more than enough.
Legendary Ronny
That truck is beautiful. The hood is the best part. Got into a fender bender a few years ago with my Ranger. It was a b*tch to find another bulge hood to replace it.
I think they have a great base package. I love the sound of your truck and wish I had the coin to buy one similar. I'm off to put the lotto in.
Nice one. I wonder if anyone would import these into the UK?

In other words, the wheel has to turn faster than the shaft it's attached to.
The big problem with auto hubs is if they suffer high shock while engaging. In other words, if you get stuck in 2 wheel drive, put it in 4 wheel drive and give it the beans immediately. You will wreck them. You had to gingerly rock it back and forth several times to make sure they were completely engaged and then you were good to go. It was not the best system for here. I do like that Toyota have added a manual locking capability. Just lock them before you go wheeling and then you're sure to have them ready if you get stuck.
god that certainly doesnt look like most fat ugly modern pickups! jesus it looks like its from the 1990's, awesome!
Beautiful truck! Here in the US are not available and stick shift is extinct... Enjoy t
Seeya Rob
Love this truck.
Great video as always.
Why not a hand twist on the wheel hub like the old days? Why do I now have to get some socket to change it?
The climate control for the A/C and heat are the exact same from 1985 XD That's fucking amazing I love it!!
How is that hot cat gonna go getting splashed with water or covered in mud? Thermal shock could crack it.
You could put a plate where dpf is that's what we done with rfs on the new trucks
It’s a shame we don’t get the 79 series land cruiser in the UK as the land Rover defender is not available anymore
New bonnet looks bad ass!
I work on lots of cars and in general I've seen toyotas with lots of miles and seen Chevrolets with lots of miles it's all down to the first and second owner and how well was the car taken care of
If they make a DPF scrape guard it should stop the heat getting threw to the grass under the vehicle.
Toyota really needs to modernize those wing mirrors. Christ.
Hey Ronny, can you summarize the differences between GX and GXL? Thanks
the GXL has chrome grille, exterior door trims, bucket seats, carpet, alloy wheels, choice of more colours and central locking, electric windows and a few more upgrades, Cheers Rolly
I heard the single cab has only a single 130l tank- is this true?
4.5 litre diesel V8 with just 350Nm and 148 hp???
Hey Ronny, I'm looking to get one of these in a couple of months. Cheers for telling us about the child restraints, I'll make sure they install them when the time comes.
I am curious though, do you find the overhand length of the stock tray to be a problem when going off-road ?
Good video , I also believe no more split rim wheels due to mining co.'s safety requirements
I wouldn't buy one because I reckon Toyota are treating customers with disdain.
i.e wheel track not the same , gearing too low( still ) , cabin a throwback , suspension RS , engine thirsty and not thermodynamicaly efficient ( taller gears would of course help) , and for all this an outrageous price
Cheers Ronny, greatly informative 👍🏽
That means the "snorkel" is ricer equipment on one of these.
dont think the dpf will be a problem as their is plenty of petrol vehicles out thie with catalysts that get to similar temps and are not causng fires out bush. also the piezoelectric injectors are a crystal which when applied with a small electric field it expands opening the injector when it is discharged it returns to its normal state this making it a quiet and efficient injector DO NOT UNPLUG when testing with vehicle running as this could cause the injector to completely jam open causing run ons etc.
Is this back to the fututre? Marty Marty! I need to tell you about the future! Oh my god the price changes but the features (and performance) remain the same! Except for the bonnet scoop and ... ripplesz?
70 interior dizayn 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Ronny! Is the alternator still down low where it's likely to be effected by mud and dirt? Or have Toyota moved it up higher?
Still the same spot. We have sealed alternators if you go through a lot of mud and constantly changing/cleaning them though. A lot of mines are now running these.
Great video and really pissed off they didn't fix the track. Wonder what its like looking over the bonnet. Hopefully there will be one at the Perth 4wd show as coming down from Broome.
This one is ours and will be at the 4WD show
That's a genuine Ayers Rock torque curve!
Hey Ronny did you end up seeing if you can swap the bonnet over the previous model cruiser? And where to buy them?
Good stuff Ronny. Any chance of a Surf / 4 Runner modified episode?
Cheers
I wish we got these in USA. I love my V8 4Runner but would buy a 79series diesel manual in a second.
