I just saw the movie La Bamba and I was hooked I did research on him and his music such a tragic story would of been cool to listen to his music if he were still alive. Ritchie Valens grave is in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California, just a few miles from where he grew up. His Mother Connie died shortly after the Movie LA BAMBA was released and she now shares the grave site with her son Ritchie..

Here was a 17 yr old Mexican-American hitting it big in the 50's and singing in spanish. Don't remember anyone else like that back then. Ritchie opened the doors for a lot of hispanics. Santana even thanked him in his rock & roll hall of fame speech. He was a great artist and his music will live on forever.

When I was 5 years old (1955 -56) and we often ate Sunday Dinner at DEL & JOHNNY'S Restaurant on San Fernando Road in Sylmar, where Connie was a waitress. In the early 1980's I re-met Ritchie's Familys -The Valenzuelas (Paternal) and the Reyes Family as I helped Author Beverly Mendheim in the research for her Book:: "RITCHIE VALENS The First Latino Rocker. His Cousin ERNIE (Reyes) VALENS still performs his Music..

In Beverly Mendheim's Book "Ritchie Valens - THE FIRST LATINO ROCKER " others also describe how Ritchie was allowed to bring his Guitar to school and entertain. As Mr. Schwartz explains " I talked with Ritchie about it. We had an understanding that as long as everything was okay and there were no problems, he could continue to do that ". I know that most schools would never allow it, but Ritchie was an extraordinary Human being and Pacoima Jr High was and still is an extraordinary School.
Well, 33 years later from when this video was created. Pacoima, CA hasn't really changed. It's one of San Fernando Valley's ghetto. Its full or culture diversity and great food, but poverty still plagues Pacoima and it's neighboring cities, Sun Valley, Arleta, Sylmar, Lake View Terrace and Panorama City. There are homeless people coming into the area, specially around the railroad tracks along San Fernando Road.

I've often wondered if he would have been as celebrated if he had not perished.....We do live in odd ball society that in essence ridicules success, yet when one succumbs to death they're all the rage......incredibly sad......but true.
I agree, when someone dies that's the time people are quoting them and playing there music and video's like they was doing it before there death. Some also wants to act like they knew more about the persons life better than anyone else.

My Mother was from Pacoima and was friends with Ritchie's Mother Connie. When I was 5 years old (1955 -56) and we often ate Sunday Dinner at DEL & JOHNNY'S Restaurant on San Fernando Road in Sylmar, where Connie was a waitress. In the early 1980's I re-met Ritchie's Familys -The Valenzuelas (Paternal) and the Reyes Family as I helped Author Beverly Mendheim in the research for her Book:: "RITCHIE VALENS The First Latino Rocker.
His Cousin ERNIE (Reyes) VALENS still performs his Music..

The thing that’s soooo crazy to me is his fear of planes ✈️!! And how when he was little he saw that plane crash his friend died ... it’s crazy how he died in a plane crash too , makes my tummy hurt thinking about it he knew that plane was gonna crash that night

I know that most schools would never allow it, but Ritchie was an extraordinary Human being and Pacoima Jr High was and still is an extraordinary School.
Well, 33 years later from when this video was created. Pacoima, CA hasn't really changed. It's one of San Fernando Valley's ghetto. Its full or culture diversity and great food, but poverty still plagues Pacoima and it's neighboring cities, Sun Valley, Arleta, Sylmar, Lake View Terrace and Panorama City. There are homeless people coming into the area, specially around the railroad tracks along San Fernando Road.
gmlasam I can say that’s 100% true. I grew up in the area. It is about 85 % Hispanic if not more.
