Ritchie Valens grave is in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California, just a few miles from where he grew up. His Mother Connie died shortly after the Movie LA BAMBA was released and she now shares the grave site with her son Ritchie..
That is really sad. In 1958 I was the same age as Ritchie and I was so proud that a fellow "Chicano" had made good. But, then I was saddened that he had died so young. He was our first "Chicano" R&R singer who could have been like "Paul Anka", or the other "White Anglo" singers in the 1950s.

But over the past few years while doing family genealogy research I discovered Richie and I share common ancestors who came to California from Mexico in the late 1600's. I was and am still thrilled! Well, 33 years later from when this video was created. Pacoima, CA hasn't really changed. It's one of San Fernando Valley's ghetto. Its full or culture diversity and great food, but poverty still plagues Pacoima and it's neighboring cities, Sun Valley, Arleta, Sylmar, Lake View Terrace and Panorama City. There are homeless people coming into the area, specially around the railroad tracks along San Fernando Road.

His name was Charlie or Chuck Armendariz. He drove Ritchie around to gigs and recording sessions (he was there when Ritchie recorded La Bamba). He and Ritchie were friends and Ritchie was a part of the family, so it wasn't like my dad had to do it, he wanted to.
Here was a 17 yr old Mexican-American hitting it big in the 50's and singing in spanish. Don't remember anyone else like that back then. Ritchie opened the doors for a lot of hispanics. Santana even thanked him in his rock & roll hall of fame speech. He was a great artist and his music will live on forever.

His name was Charlie or Chuck Armendariz. He drove Ritchie around to gigs and recording sessions (he was there when Ritchie recorded La Bamba). He and Ritchie were friends and Ritchie was a part of the family, so it wasn't like my dad had to do it, he wanted to.

Here was a 17 yr old Mexican-American hitting it big in the 50's and singing in spanish. Don't remember anyone else like that back then. Ritchie opened the doors for a lot of hispanics. Santana even thanked him in his rock & roll hall of fame speech. He was a great artist and his music will live on forever.

He was big in the 1940s in records and movies and later in Mexico and throughout Latin America and Spain. Look him up. He has been truly forgotte, but he was huge back in the day.

I had a 45 records of Richie singing La Bamba and Donna on the flip side. It was a green and black Del-Fi label, and I cracked it somehow. I had the Big Boppers Chantilly Lace and several Buddy Holly 45 originals. I gave them all away.
