The hatch is growing on me, not gonna lie
Me too, I may get this when prices stabilize.
Same here, especially if the Sport Touring will have a more aggressive suspension tuning to match the grill, front fascia, and tail end treatments. Plus, the added cargo utility, full length taillight/center brakelight treatment and exhaust ports.
Same!
Same! I didn't like it as much at first but it grew on me so quickly. If they truly do give us an Si hatchback then I'd probably have to get that.
@@alexc7864 From everything I heard, the Si will probably be still a sedan and the Type R a hatchback. Is seemed pretty reliable as such. The Si would seem fine with upgraded suspension of the Sport/Touring, dual tip version of the Sport Exhaust and HPD Appearance package, etc. But ifbit was up to me, the Sport Touring Hatchback shoukd have the previous Si 200 HP 1.5 Turbo, and the Si should have the detuned Type R 2.0L Turbo from the Accord Sport/Touring and the Bose sound system, etc. and what options they usually have. It is the more affordable and practical performance version fir enthususst, and more comfortable for daily driving than the Type R, particular the seats and supension ride, brakes and super soft tires that stick to gravel and are expensive and wear down superfast. People who get the Tyoe R, usualky want to go racibg, like my friend does with his, or collect them, and/or had the money to get one for status, and may not even know the real life down sides of it mentioned above. Which makes the Si much more practical.
For the more budget minded that are enthusiast, but don't need the horsepower, and all the tech but want the sport appearance, handling and essential gear without the extras like the sunroif, power seats, dual zone A/C, etc, and want the more reliable, N/A 2.0L engine, they can get the Sport Sedan, and now the Sport Hatchback with that engine, with an available 6 Speed. I think that makes if great, especially if you like the styling and engineering refinements of the new sedan and hatchback over the previous generation. It surpasses the Corolla Hatchback, unless you're a diehard tuner that wants to tweak, customize and modify your car.
I get all the design and aesthetic talk and appreciate it. But at the end of the day, for me it comes down to the increased utility of the hatch. I've never owned one, but when you occasionally need to transport something, or even throw a bike inside vs. on a carrier so you can lock up the bike, that's where the hatch comes in for me.
Boost blue, hatchback, manual. That’s the spec I would get on the new civic.
I'm leaning to that as well just waiting to see the Si first.
Manual sucks for a dd
Hope you're either good with the base 2.0 NA engine in the Sport trim or live in Canada then, eh (at least for the 2022 model year)
@Andrew Mai , no port injection is a big deal breaker for me too. Yeah, the 2.0 will be slower but I drive a 99 Miata and 2000 4Runner. Haha, everything I own is slow. 🤷♂️
YEESSSSS!!!! BRING BACK THE LIFTBACKS! I miss all the liftback style hatchbacks from the 90s. Today's hatchbacks don't look as cool.
They look like glorified station wagons. This lift back looks nice!
Agree can't wait for type R
I guess there is a new 2 door coupe version also to be introduced at some point, for 2022? I wouldve liked the new 2 door to be that liftback version. Like my 1986 white Honda Accord hatchback coupe back in the day
@@ryanfgrantjr3009 I remember hearing that they officially cancelled the coupe for this generation, because of extremely low coupe sales on the outgoing generation. Imo that might have to do with the fact that they half assed it and made it almost the same size as the sedan for production cost (I think it has the exact same wheelbase?) Which made it just an awkward looking car. Kinda sad because I like coupes, but I'm not to hurt.
@@spencerlorrigan Hey Spencer, Thanks so much. Everything you said made perfect sense. I forgot to google it after I posted question. I am huge fan of past Honda coupes as my 1st ever car , age 16, in 1995 was a used 1987 white Accord HB coupe and my last car was my favorite, a 2010 black on black Accord hottie EXL which I still miss badly after selling her for a CUV in 2018.
On the hatch, the peices on the doors above the windows are rain visors designed so you can roll your windows down a bit in the rain and the rain won't come in. I have them on my car and I will buy them for every car I own, they are amazing!
The trim over the windows are called monsoon shield. It is for rain protection. So you can open windows a little for fresh air and not let the rain in.
Both sedan n hatchback looking handsome...new era for civic...
100% the hatchback. I may get one next year after the hype dies down. FWIW, not all photos and videos of the hatch have those window wind deflectors.
The hatchback space is frankly pretty shallow when the seats aren’t put down. I like to road trip a lot with friends and the sedan is longer and was able to fit all of our luggage, where the hatchback isn’t quite as deep, nor long. It is a bit taller but it’s at an angle that ends up blocking your rear view anyways. Both are beautiful and there’s no denying the hatchback’s versatility with the seats down, but for road trips the sedan is superior.
For a daily driver I would always choose the 2.0l na over the turbo
Wind deflector or something is quite common option parts in Japan. Especially for smokers. It can open windows even when it is rainy.
Exactly. It's an optional parts called "door visor" and so popular that many people even think it comes as a standard.
I got the sedan touring with HPD in red the day the hatch was announced. I’m so happy I didn’t wait! The sedan is amazing!
I ordered a hatchback with the HPD today. Is the HPD worth the money?
6:40 those are there so that you can open the window when is raining, I think the civic on that photo is the Japanese spec, because in Japan almost all cars have that. I live in Japan and Japanese like to open the windows when raining apparently.
Smokers usually have them, lot of smokers in Japan?
@@ThisGuyRides that’s thing is not related with smokers, but yeah Japan has a lot of smokers
@@mitsuhiaoyagi7654 opening the window one inch allows the smoke to escape, so smokers put those ventshade on so they can smoke and drive in rain
@@ThisGuyRides well yeah, but I don’t think that’s the main reason for that since 90% of the cars in Japan have that
@@mitsuhiaoyagi7654 - who else needs to open their windows in the rain. In the USA, it’s low class to have those. Never seen on a luxury brand.
Both are cool- sedan is great for it’s and great design but hatch is definitely amazing! Great review
Just got the 2022 sport touring hatch a few days ago. I love it. The front end looks even better in person vs the sedan, and I like the fastback style of the hatch, even though the sales guy said he thought it was ugly haha. The hatch makes more sense also for my use (camping/photography), so it's also a practicality thing for me. I love the tail light design as well. I also like that it doesn't try to be something it's not. The 10th gen seemed to try to be too sporty, but in a weird way, with the fake vents and aggressive body lines, in a car that's meant to be economic. If I wanted a sport honda, I'd go with the type R.
The interior on the 2022 civic is much nicer, and just overall the car is more refined. Which for my taste, fits perfectly. Everyone has their tastes and preferences, and luckily the hatch market isn't lacking for choice.
After putting a deposit on a touring sedan in white. I changed my mind and got the hatchback sport touring for the wife. We now have the 1st 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring in the Southeast. We took delivery about 3 weeks ago!
New Video is up on my channel.
Great video man!
Congrats! How much thou
I didn’t realize how much more I liked the front of the Hatch until this video for some reason. It looks way better with ever so slight changes.
The hatch seems to be more of a car from this generation. I don’t mind the sedan but it did look a little dated- especially in the back. Amazing what a few adjustments can do.
7:25 It is not for wind, but to be able to crack the window open during the rain and not get wet inside.
I don't like the honeycombs, whether outside or inside the car. I like the horizontal slats more
I think mazda has the best looking hatch currently, new civic right behind it. The liftback design gives it a nice profile from all around.
love style of the current hatch of Mazda 3. But we could just not accept the huge blinded pillars on the back doors. Our vision was way to obstructed, esp when the rear hatch glass was already pretty small and sloped. We couldn't find a car we liked in design as the 3 so we just took a pass on buying a new sled last fall.
@@ryanfgrantjr3009 that blind spot & the torsion beam is what made me pass on the new mazdas
Honda did it right appealing to a lot of different folks. Making backend change was the right move. Wonder what’s the color available?
You can't convince me they are different cars. They are both Sedans
Only a blind person would think the Sedan looks better. If NA engine is about 200lb lighter then Turbo, it’d be the ultimate power train when matted to a 6MT. That little turbo is more suited to the CVT.
Just stop GUESSING if you don’t have any idea.
The things on the doors are an accessory that can be optioned. Nothing to do at all with wind noise, it’s to allow you to drop the window slightly and the weather shield which is what it’s called stops the rain getting in. There’s a spoiler on the hatch too so the promo photo obviously has some accessories on it.
Omg! You bought a Mini, a Tesla and now *another one* ?
The one dealbreaker for me is the rear turn signals. it’s a small thing but a car with nice turn signals is important for me
Luckily its a Civic, so there will be TONS of aftermarket taillights to choose from.
Coming from a 19 hatch manual owner, if u guys don't buy them hatches in manual, Honda will drop the option in a couple of yrs. Do it
Both cars look awesome in person, I wish they kept some of the style from previous year because it was so distinctive and beautiful. Also should have done chrome piece at front like Accord, just offer black out or body colour options... Looks a bit off as is now, otherwise looks great.
The one thing I don't agree with you on is the taillights for the Sedan I think they look fine.
I have the Civic sedan, and he and I came to the same conclusion. The rear taillights on the sedan are enormous haha.
90's liftback styling. Love it.
Looks like a Sileighty.
Save yourselves $1100 and get a 2021 Mazda CX-30 which is basically a raised Mazda 3 hatch. The CX-30 is just under 300 lbs. heavier with AWD and has the same 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times as the new Civic. The real world MPG of the CX-30 and 300 ft. road handling is better in the CX-30 while the braking is the same. If you want a safer car with better reliability the CX-30 is an SUV that actually beats the all new Civic! (Some of this data is from Car & Driver)
Well, whatever Honda's calling it, this body type always used to be referred to as a 'fastback' (then later as a 'sportback' by some, but let's ignore that as an irrelevancy) because the long slope was considered more aerodynamic than either a sedan or a true hatchback.
is this actually true? i feel it is, but i wonder why the MPG is actually less on the “hatchback” even tho it’s about the same weight etc
Issue for many of us looking forward to the Si, is that supposedly it's only going to be available in sedan form. Even though I like the hatch version better, seems like sedan it will be for me.
to be honest the CVT civic 2022 sport touring hatchback is pretty quick when it takes off. You get a little push back into the seat. For 180 horses you are faster then most normal cars on the road. Tune it and you can be over 200 horses easily. Probably the best CVT turbo charged engine out there.
Best one yet 🙂
Hatch, those visors on the door are for venting. You can leave your windows open a little to let heat out and to keep rain from getting in They are still sold from factory and after market
8:40 technically this is not a hatchback, it's a fastback. Hence the confusion.
What many aren't getting is this Civic is simply too long to be a 2-box hatchback. It's as long as a Golf wagon: if it was to be boxy as a Golf... then it would be a wagon.
11:10 again you're not considering lenght. You're not getting less space than a boxy hatch, this would be true if the car was as long as a classic hatchback. This one has the volume of a boxy hatch (which is 30 cm shorter), PLUS the extra volume given by those extra 30 cm.
That makes sense. Look at the K4. It increased in length to compete with the Civic and the hatchback looks more like a wagon. I personally like the “liftback.” Hatchbacks haven’t been doing well in the US for quite sometime. They haven’t been popular since the 90s. So this style makes more sense.
I'm glad Honda made this dramatic style 'correction' from the previous design. When you popped the old Type R on screen for a few seconds it really was shocking how overstyled it was compared to this new sleeker version. Still wishing they had gone with a true hatchback, but if the floor of the rear is deep enough, it should provide alot more cargo space.
I'm also surprised by how different the two models are styled, they appear to have different front bumpers, different side skirts, and completely different rear ends with the taillights and bumpers changing completely. That's unusual. Usually, a manufacturer will keep as much of the design intact across different variants so they don't have to manufacturer different body panels for each model. So I'm glad they made the hatchback its own thing rather than a copy of the sedan with just a different roofline. I wonder if we'll see civic sedan owners opting to do a 'front end swap' to the hatch bumper...much like old Civics would swap bumpers from an Si.
And I'm guessing that blue hatchback photo is from their 'accessory catalog' photoshoot. Where they put all the accessories you can add on at the dealer when you pick out your car. Rainguards over the windows, rear spoiler, and those wheels are different from the promo video, probably offered by the dealer for an extra $1000 or something.
It's interesting to see the trend of cleaner, less complicated designs coming back not only with Honda but pretty much the entire automotive industry. Seems like we reached a peak where we literally couldn't add more lines and creases to a design, only way to go was to dial it back.
And I think you're right, the blue hatch could be the accessories car.
@@Bembli *LESS IS MORE*
I prefer the previous gen Sedan though
@@Bembli Please don't look at the new Hyundai Elantra. Yuck.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned, but the blue hatchback picture is from Honda of Japan showing the vehicle with different honda accessories. So the wheels, spoiler, and window visors will not come standard. Also, only the US models have the orange corner lights in the headlights. Other countries don’t get that.
It doesn't really look like a normal hatchback design it looks more like an a7 stinger.
Sedan looks better. Hatch looks like a slipper with wheels
Love the new sedan design.. The tail lights seem to be borrowed from INSIGHT parts bin. I definitely prefer the sedan over the HB. . HB style looks like it's Butt was bitten off too severe for me.. As if the shark from Jaws movie took a bigger bite than he should've taken
i like this hatchback so much better than most. this looks more like a sportback. which i like
I’ve never been a fan of the civic but this is really nice, at the same time the boxy part between the headlights is ugly.
Overall I don’t mind that it looks like an accord, it looks pretty clean and simple.
The wind deflectors are standard in Japan, deflects a bit of rain too!
I don't like the slopy hatchback rear-end either. I like the Golf look of a more squared off rear, since it is a TON more practical
Not really it's just taller besides that the civic has more space.
The Golf is more squared off because there is less car behind the rear seats. The Civic has just as much vertical load space, but much more longitudinal. If the Civic roofline was as flat as the Golf, it would be a wagon.
I really love both the sedan and hatch. But I'd buy a Mazda3
Mazdas are not as reliable, but gotten better than when Ford owned Mazda, those were terrible
whats the difference practicality wise?
Sedan unless its like the 95 hatchy, that was dope
I'm glad Honda isn't doing the boy racer designs on the Civic anymore... BUT Honda needs to get their power up. HP and Torque are laughable at this point.
Uhh it's a normal car that's supposed to get you to work or whatever. Why would you ever want more power.
That's what the type R there for!
@@mrwhips3623 I mean it depends on your opinion I suppose. Some people like to pass prius's and cyclists with a bit of vigor.
Yes there's the type R, but that thing has over double the power and the price. They just need to get with the times and at least edge the 200hp range.
Patience grasshopper. There's an Si and Type R coming for sure. They always logically release the mass market models 1st.
What are you talking about? For its class its actually pretty good, have you seen its main competition's HP, the Corolla?
Please redesign the civic as a wagon or hatch or shooting brake or coupe
Traditional hatchback I meant
*Those window addons are probably factory accessory addons also available aftermarket. Likewise, the wheels look like extra cost optional wheels like the previous Civics, which I think are nice, but not nicer that the stock equipped Sport and Sport Touring models. Wherever this right hand drive model is, that may be the OEM spec wheels, but the USA 🇺🇸 version has IMHO, nicer, more performance oriented wheels, as the Sport Sedan/Hatchback which has racier blacked out sport wheels that go great with the optional HPD Appearance Package on the Sport Sedan with body kit, rear spoiler and blacked out emblems.
I like the Touring Sedan, but I like the Sport Touring Hatchback much better. And prefer the drivers seat, steering wheel and instrument panel on the left side. 😉
The Si should have dual exhaust tips like the Sport Sedan, and it would be great if it had the detuned 2.0L turbo engine from the Accord Sport/Touring for way more power than the previous Si 1.5L turbo, since more hard core performance drivers that plan to race will get the Type R, while everyday driver performance enthusiasts will prefer the more practical and comfortable Si.
Looking from back 3/4 perspective, the swooping roofline reminds me the 1990's Saab 9-3.
Hatch is the way to go, If you want to keep the handling of a sedan and not go into crossover territory, in fact is very practical specially when you have pets. Fold down the seats and you can make move a small apartment in no time.
1st time 1st view 1st comment
Checked and reloaded multiple times . Unbelievably quick for me
The visors are to block sunlight, not to dampen wind noise
Sounds like you need to pay a premium to get a manual and the 1.5t. Looks like the SI is going to be the way if you want a manual. Fingers crossed we will get a SI hatch.
Also at 6:40 it looks more like a HFP package on the hatch. Wing and rain guards were options on the last generation.
im torn between 2021 civic hatch vs the 2022 civic hatch, i kinda want the 2021 for the sportier look but the 2022 interior is way better.
The blue civic hatch you are using for comparisons is fitted with optional accessories. The wheels, the window weather shields, front lip and rear spoiler are all dealer options and won’t be fitted as standard.
Yes, I would go with the 1.5T and the 6MT, if not the Type-R.
Don't know why the Honda dealership in my area said this year's hatchback looks weird. I think you're right it looks better and more toned down
Lots of wining from the critic Honda hit it out of the park very good job by Honda design team.
4 wheel drive availability ?
Beware the turbo: durability and oil dilution problems... 2.0 Liter is the best.
They resolved that issue with the 2019 and 2020 models
I'm a more traditional car enthusiast and personally I do not like car body designs now a days. This is my reason: sedans are looking like hatchbacks and the Honda civic sedan is the perfect example just look at its exterior trunk design it is basically mimicking a hatchback and this goes to most every other car brands as well.
If car designers think that is the way to the future in car looks and aesthetics I'd rather live in the past. I know that aerodynamic designs for better fuel efficiency and now EV's are the new norm, but common car designers, design a body that's appealing as a sedan not a car that looks like a flattened capsule on one of its ends.
Honda can not really do anything wrong in most people's eyes. Whatever they make sells extremely well. I am sure the Civic sedan/hatchback will be no exception.
I like the sedan way more
Sedan is too generic, hatchback is where it's at!
Great comparison video man..I'm liking the hatchback..I have a '15 civic but would love to upgrade to hatchback.
Dude, I might buy this car. (Hatch manual)
The purpose of the things over the windows in the blue sedan pic is to guide water away from the window openings. You don't/won't see them on the American versions because it's a regulation in Japan. In other words, you compared a JDM Civic hatch with an American Civic Sedan.
It would be nice to throw in the Acura Integra base spec for a three way comparison.
The wind deflectors are a popular add-on in Japan. The only thing that stinks is that when a strong typhoon comes, they may fly away (like what happened to my Subaru Pleo 3 years ago).
What do u consider a perfect sedan desigh
6:52 It's so you can crack the windows in the rain to defog without getting wet.
I would buy the 2022 Honda Civic Sport Touring hatchback over the sedan version because I think it looks a lot better than the sedan especially from the rear. I would prefer it as well with the manual gearbox but only if Honda fixes the rev.-hang problem when charging gears. I hope the Si would be offered in the hatchback. I prefer the coupe-like design in the hatchback, which actually should be referred to as a “liftback” or “sportback.”
Honestly I like the liftback style, but it doesn't really speak civic to me.
But I'm really keen on the frontend's refresh. Love how it looks much sharper.
That’s what they went for. Backend diff
Rain ☔️ in protection you can roll with windows down while it’s raining that’s why you have this window thing
Nah, the window wind deflectors are options. You can get them on the sedan as well. I would hate it if they made those standard because they ruin the side design.
The smaller the tail light the more expensive. Don’t ask me how it just is.
dude, you are looking at the car with all the accessories!
I got me the 2023 hatchback sport touring 😊
Is this bigger than accord euro CL9 or CU2?
Hatchback for me all the way ✌️
Any vehicle that is a hatchback has more glass. Beware of the rear window wiper arm as they rust, will malfunction, and break off. I prefer a sedan. It's the Baby Accord.
What is honda doing? I'm so confused. So is this the new hatchback that replaces the type r? And the type r is now a sedan? The Integra is pretty much a si with a Integra logo on it. Integra is supposed to be the performance side of Honda now, but I'm not seeing it. Anyone else confused as me?
I hope Honda gets away from the sloping hatchback in the future. It looks like a tesla model 3
why have I just found out about this other channel
But we all know the hatchback is not a sport car the si is a sport car so on the insurance it will vary I'm curious how much it will be for the hatchback I love them both
I love the looks of it! I haven't driven the wee little 4cyl turbos but I really wish Honda would bring back the j35 v6.
Best civic ever no doubt
Just put a down payment on the hatch. Getting the 6 speed manual transmission Sport Touring with HPD package. Just waiting for it to reach my dealership.
The manual transmission would be a great idea just as long as it doesn't suffer from rev hang; and I want to have a traditional hand operated emergency brake please.
Sorry, if the base price of the sedan is 22k, why would we assume that the base price of the Hatch will be higher ? So you chop off a portion of the rear, and it automatically costs more.....should it not cost LESS ?
The LX sedan comes with steel wheels and hub caps. The LX hatchback will have 16" alloy wheels. And some suspension upgrade over sedan.
Where did you get your tee shirt?
Civic just feels right as a hatchback always
My opinion is the Hatchback manual or CVT I would lean manual. It is practical, hp is respectable the mpg is great. The civic lacks the space and I was waiting for the Si and if the Si came in a hatch I would say that but the reveal was a bit disappointing. I will wait for the Si test drives to see which to go with but right now the Hatch is winning this race.
You're looking at the fully optioned hatch in blue.
Coupe?
