    I remember the Halloween of '98 fondly. I thought my trick-or-treating was being cut short but my mom told me we were going to the local Putt Putt Golf because something special was happening. My mom often took me there and was a light gun game enthusiast while I only liked House of the Dead.
    I get there, hyped on sugar and candy, to see the CarnEvil game where the old Area 51 was. My mom and I spent two hours on that game (and maybe over $10 just on Hambone) and got the high score for a while. I'll always remember that night and my mother's love of light gun games, I'll have to link this vid to her!

    The thing about this game that makes it incredible? The amount of enemy variety. There's over 40 different monsters in the game. Up to this point, most other lightgun games had recycled their enemy designs. In addition, Carnevil required each monster to be 3D rendered as well. Having a dip-switch to apply cosmetic changes to a boss is quite unique.

    There used to be an arcade that was connected to a movie theatre here in Louisville Kentucky. I remember going to see Pokemon: The First Movie with my best friend and mom, and afterwards going over to the arcade where I first played this awesome game. I bought the flyer that advertised the game off of eBay years later. Really wish it would have gotten a home port instead of having to emulate it every time, but hey, at least it's still playable.

    Its odd. I never realized three of my top five favorite lightgun games were from Midway until then. This, Terminator 2, and Revolution X. I played this once or twice a week (whenever I visited my then local Walmart) for a few months until I moved to the town I live in now plus I played it in many arcades and Pizza places.
    Edit: I hate the ending. I saw it three times, and the second and third I and whoever I was teaming with were trying to figure out how to unlock a good ending. After beating the game without Betty taking a hit and still getting the same end (It was a rumor one of my friends told me that claimed doing so was the path to the good end.) and still getting the same ending I gave up. I played the game more times but never bothered beating it again.

    • @PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries

    Chiller is one of the most edgy tryhard game I have ever played. Carnevil is honestly one of my favorite arcade games of all time. It’s such a crusty ass light gun shooter at the time. Granted this predated the original half life by a month and is visually on par with half life but the pre-rendered cutscenes add to the charming crust factor. Midway now is a whale fall of what it once was and a game dev scene has formed around that corpse. Sure it became nether realm now but a bunch of the former talent aren’t in the game dev business now but I am grateful for what has laid the groundwork for my local game dev scene

    • @ThatManOverThere
      @ThatManOverThere ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I think they didn't port it cause it was in that kind of weird era of technology, where no one really knew what it would land on due to being too well speced for the consoles already out, but not enough of a draw to justify porting to something newer.
      Is a great game, and beating it is a lot of fun.

    • @Phoenix7786
      @Phoenix7786 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both times I've been to Galloping Ghost the lightgun games were all waaaay off as far as the guns' accuracy was concerned. How did you compensate for that?

    • @palaceofwisdom9448
      @palaceofwisdom9448 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phoenix7786 That's been spotty for me. I was there about a month ago and several gun games were moved and had been fixed since last time. With Carnevil I had trouble when monsters were near the edge of the screen so I chose my targets accordingly. Police Trainer 2 worked flawlessly and was incredibly fun, I kept at it until I managed to beat it.

    I only found out about this game from a boss battle video randomly in my recommended, so I watched out of morbid curiosity, and honestly I love this game! I never played it cause it was before my time, but I can tell this game was put together with so much passion! Especially the art style and gore which was so hard to do at that time, but they did it well and honestly I think even if it’s not realistic, I love the cartoony and low polygon style. I honestly wish more horror games would do that especially nowadays , cause it really has its own appeal and creep factor. The only game I’ve seen actually use this style instead of having it due to technology limitations is this one, and the Gregory Horror Show. Which is a shame, I honestly want more stylized polygon horror games. :/

    Love love love this game. I do have to wonder about the “Salty Jack” doll display in the game. Did the makers of this game make an amalgamation of the Cracker Jack logo character and Robert The Doll, the famous haunted doll in Florida? Robert is also dressed in a sailor outfit and is usually enclosed in a glass display case, which of course they claim is for the public’s safety. Kinda seems like a mix of both.

So CarnEvil munched a lot of quarters out of me! Also has my favorite monster of all time, Krampus! Kind of cool to think they created something so good it was not converted to home consoles! Hi Patman! CarnEvil, just in time for Halloween! A great look at the history of this creepy Halloween themed nightmare firing game versus evil monsters. Cool to see some of the horror sketches for the game. Great documentary, thanks!! Cool also there is a planned VR inspired CarnEvil game, which reminds me of PSVR1's Rush of Blood VR, which has the player on a cart ride blasting away at demonic monsters. Cool to see the audio issues have been resolved. Great video, Happy Halloween, Patman! Thank you.

    Great video as always, thank you! Glad to hear that Midway moved a lot of units, but I think a lot of people missed this one since it was released after the height of arcades' popularity and never got a true console release.

    I used to go to the corner score in my neighborhood with my friend, he'd have 30 bucks form mowing a lawn so we'd get some snacks and blow like 10 bucks trying to get as far as we could. I wonder where that friend is now? Wish we could of kept in touch, he was a good dude. I saw this at Circus Circus years later as well.

    I loved this game, but it was a rare one where I live. Only 1 arcade had it, and no one else I know remembers it. Also thank you for showing the ending, I never had enough money to finish it, and the emulator kept crashing for me.

    Man this is great
    This game was out right as j was a kid so i never got a chance to try it, but it always caught my eye and i was imagining one day getting to try it. Sadly, arcades started dying out long before i was old enough to journey out to them on my own, and now that im an adult, I havent even seen these at "retro barcades" to the point i completely forgot of it until i saw the clown on the thumbnail

    Of course I always hoped we could have seen the boat ride / tunnel of love section that was cut during development. The concept art that survived looked fantastic. There is such a rabbit hole to go down regarding this game. It gets wild with theories about its development and developers. Still one of the best games ever created and the song Big Bunyan Ride was so catchy & morbidly funny, I wish a complete remastered game score would be released.
