I still remember discovering that one kurb in Seattle circuit in Gran Turismo 3, I remember hitting it acidentally with the Formula GT but instead of the car go fly, it sticked to the kurb and then I was able to go much faster around the corner, like a Gutter Run but inverted
I hated that circuit when I was a kid, then I got addicted to GTPSP in my adolesence and it became my favourite city circuit for a while. That curb is so rewarding when you nail it.
5:45 it's really easy to teach yourself this technique and how it feels if you take the MX-5 Cup car around Mugello in AC. the corners and curbs at Mugello mixed with the MX-5 Cup's predictability make for a near perfect learning scenario.
Watching all the way from South Africa looking to make motorsport my career however I am in my first year at UKZN I learned a lot of theory from this channel and thanks to the information I am getting closer and closer to my dreams
There is also slow speed inside apex sausage kerbs on some hairpins, where you can hook the inside wheels on the inside of the curb, effectively making a berm for the inside wheels. Hairpin at the end of Jerez's backstraight is a good example.
The way I use curbs is basically, I put my inner wheels inside the curb so my wheels are on the grass. My wheels will grab the curb, and will slingshot my car around the corner. It is like the gutter run but using curbs instead.
Watkins curb inside front touch isn't actually caused by the inside front losing traction. It's actually caused because the touch loads the inside left front for a moment, which unloads both the outside left front and inside right rear, and in turn loads up the outside left rear, breaking it's traction slightly. This dynamic change in crossweight, mainly due to the outside left rear getting slightly more loaded, causes the car to oversteer. It's similar to touching the apron at an oval track, causing an oversteer moment.

Was holding on nitpicking till 5:45 explanation... No, that's not how it works. The kerbs do loose you traction (mostly because of tyre movement up/down for which dampers are much under prepared to deal). but they help you turn in different ways: 1) The kerb is higher, putting inside front there moves the weight distribution off the rear inside to there, changing the cars mechanical balance. This is the most common reason for kerbs giving oversteer. (even at watkins, just the track camber change over kerb is enough to have this) 2) AC kerbs are sticky, the earlier noted damping issues combined with limited physics frame rate can lead to runaway tyre loads which can randomly pull the car >laterally< (its a glitch). If the stars align (frequencies match) its possible to rely on this glitch in race over many laps. Ofc the that one is very rare but AFAIR THAT particular kerb has just the right spacing and common car speeds to get it, so chances are that's what you discovered. A more "famous" case of kerbs doing 2) are some (old-ish) popular videos at spa in GT3s which over the course of development were followed by patch fixes (but never disappeared completely). 3) Would be just increased tyre drag, the energy the dampers are struggling to dissipate has to come from somewhere, saw kerbs can pull just like putting tyre in sand or puddle, just to a smaller extent. and 4) that's not a case here - because rebound damping is usually much stronger than bump, the kerb can pull the suspension down (not a glitch, this happens IRL too, kerbs or bumps) which increases the efficiency of front wing shifting aero balance forward. It requires a very stiff single seater to feel oversteer from that effect thou. In general thou, the saw kerbs themselves are rarely more slippery, rather cars just don't have enough damping to calm the tyre going pogo. Im mentioning it because you CAN use damper adjustments to fix some of the kerb issues, not all, not completely but it can help (fast damping has far more impact on it). In your watkins case its 2) and 3) mainly, adding 1) as the car is pulled deeper. GL with your league :3
This is generally knowledge for me and many others but enjoyable to watch. Keep it up (should have had footage of v8 super cars going over kerb, they look so good doing that like they were built for them)
Very great video but I thought the angle of the curbs will be a theme also. If you catch as much speed out the corner as possible, some exit curbs may push you back on the track which I use sometimes. But maybe thats not the fastest line to take 😅
Well i love curbs as much as probably others don't like me jumping them nascar stock cars are another car that can take the punishment that curbs can dish out although no one has had a near roll tony Stewart has been known to pitch his car up onto two wheels a few times
I missed the 'Hook', a technique more used by rally drivers, where you dip the front inside tire over a ledge, and literally "traintrack" the rear behind it. Risky but rewarding.
So according to you I've been using them right forever. Started like the beginning in GT2. But by time I finished that game I was already at the end of the video.
The curb at Watkins doesn’t really work like that. If the curb is slippery and given that your formula car is not front wheel drive, the inside wheel should experience less friction to slow you down for the smaller radius, so the slipperiness is not the reason why it works. The more likely reason is that the curb acts like a gutter that hooks your inner wheel in a smaller radius and prevented your car from washing our. However you need to be careful to maintain that slip angle because if your rear wheel lands in the gutter, you will have no rear slip angle and you will under steer and shoot straight across the track.
0:45 is the complicated one results in a creation of Rally/WRC car? I mean they don't give a crap making safe tracks even the dog and other animals are part of the track, instead they over engineered the cars to make it safer
TH-cam says the video is from 54 seconds ago, with 3 views, and 3 likes and 1 commentary but when i go to commentary section there is 5 commentary and they are from 4-5 mins ago...
Hey man, love your content. Trying to get into AC touge, and wanted to download your gc8, but your links aren't working. Is there another link that won't lead to a 404?
does the slip angle trick atleast work in beamng? ive been trying to figure out how to do it on the Italian Grand Prix at Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello since theres a race coming up on beamgp and i keep tring to initiate it and i cant also the map is imported from assetto corsa
My dude, did you ask your little nephew to subtitle the video? What the heck happened to reviewing your videos before posting? If someone tries to follow the subtitles on this without listening to the audio, they are prone to having a stroke. Regardless, I found the info quite useful and helpful.
Much of this doesn't translate into the real world FYI, if you hit curbing like this in real life you'll wipeout front wheel bearings in a few sessions.
Can we hit 80,000 subs by the end of the week? 👀
hop on acc
You got it!
You defo deserve 100M subs, all of ur vids just amaze me so much and they help me to teach myself. Tysm ❤🔥

the amount of effort put into editing and informations in these videos is criminally underrated
Sausage kerbs are actually harmless, feel free to attack them as fast as you please.

Finally someone described the Watkins Glen curb trick. I do that all the time. It’s so nice to look at

@@ianjameslake That makes alot more sense.
I thought the Watkins Glen trick was gonna be hooking the kerb like the Initial D gutter run. Did it in FR3.5 in Iracing and it was stupid quick.
Yes that is the way to do it in iRacing, doesn't work as well in Assetto, but I didn't wanna renew my subscription just for this video lol.

You can also use the inside of curbs to hook the wheel in it, don't recommend it in real life tho
From playing project cars 2 i have learned to just outright avoid them, they almost always spin my car right into a fucking wall

i only play GT, & not nearly as often as i used to- but your narration, footage, & MASSIVE choons have earned a sub.
"in a few minor incidents"💀
I don't know if I should use kurbs in Gran turismo 6, because when I use it to steer faster I go out of control

How to use curbs in racing games
Step 1, find a game where curbs are lethal
Step 2, ram the opponent into them
Why do I feel like theres no real physics involved in racing? even in real life

your taste in music is impeccable.
So according to you I've been using them right forever.
Started like the beginning in GT2. But by time I finished that game I was already at the end of the video.
I do not care if I've been using curbs wrong in racing games!
So many wrong subtitles that in context dont even make sense lol but great video :))
