What are the butterflies doing? It's called puddling, they're drinking the mud puddle to take in salt and other minerals. Nature is fascinating!

One minor correction I learned from the owner of a butterfly farm in PA - They are actually absorbing the minerals and salts through their feet which is also how they taste and eat also.

Yes. Salt is a precious resource in nature. A lot of flying insects try looking for sweat on animals, urine, etc etc. I came here just to say they were probably eating salt.

Hey, I love watching what you do - it is a valuable and under-appreciated service to the community! We owned a small mining business, and had a series of settling ponds, and the final pond grained into a stream in an 18” smooth wall plastic culver 15’ long. A couple years before we sold the business, some beavers decided that they didn’t like the noise (they never built lodges on our ponds) and would stop up our culvert and spillways between ponds, who it became a daily morning chore of opening up everything. It is very satisfying to get that last key branch out that just lets the water rip out the culvert! So I have a little bit of experience with what you do, albeit on a reduced scale,
Anywho, I have found for smaller metal culverts that get crushed, that a car scissor Jack is a great tool for opening up the ends of squashed culverts - our idiot drug-dealer neighbors regularly run over the culver under our driveway entrance, and that is what I have found to work with the least effort.
Have you any updates on the stone railway culvert in Massachusetts? That was a fascinating video.
Thank you again for some great video viewing - STAY SAFE!!!!

The butterflies likely found some water/moisture that is a little bit salty from minerals. Butterflies need sodium like all animals and they seem to have a way to let others know. 😉 I've seen such gatherings quite often in places with an apparent lack of sodium on the surface.

@@retired0307 I havent previously given this much thought but here is an idea: Fill a small bowl with sand or good soil and soak it in mild saltwater. Might work and it wont contaminate the garden with salt. You then only have to keep it moist so they can actually consume it, because I dont think butterflies can eat solid salt crystals - they have no mouth with teeth, they can only drink. 😉

So cool those moments after that one push with The Rake's handle! Also how that big bundle of debris can be seen plopping out the culvert's exit! 😀👍 And yes, the amount of mosquitoes flitting across the camera is insane!

I love these videos and Post10... He's my hero. I would love to do this for fun, but I would have poison ivy and lyme disease so bad and so fast, it would kill me. Glad we have Post10 doing it for us! He is the example of a great public servant!

The butterflies look like yellow swallowtails, they are after the minerals in the mud.
It's so nice to see some, and I also like watching any frogs you may find.

Problem is, they are even easier to lose than trail-cams. Hawks don't like them, certain "bored rural-hunters" (*) would shoot them just for grins; and finally, you'd be surprised what is considered no-fly zones for them... both literally (many have physical control lockouts when in certain areas), and via signage.
On the other hand. The shots would be amazing, even cheap ones have surprisingly good cameras on them, they CAN be pretty inexpensive, they can be fun and somewhat easy to learn how to operate, and finally you can strike up conversations pretty easily with other people when you have one.
(*) yes there's a term for that, that you think of when you think of Blue Collar Comedy Shows, but with the way everything has to be so PC lately, I'm afraid to even use such a common term anywhere online anymore.
