No smoking please, Mr Antonov

  • I started filming planes because of one incident out in the countryside three years ago: the glorious sight and sound of an Antonov An-12 going low overhead having taken off from BHX a few miles away to the north.
Fortunately in the second half of 2014 there've been quite a few of these old ex-Soviet turboprops I've managed to capture locally.

Interestingly, that actual amount of carbon black emitted from the exhaust is actually quite small--it's just the way it gets expelled makes them look so prominent.

Ric Boni I don’t think so. Water injection is only used in a handful of aircraft. And most of them are not propeller driven aircraft. The Harrier with the Pegasus engine uses water injection for addition thrust during vertical takeoff. Your confusing the two. This is highly unrefined Fuel with tons of hydrocarbons typical to Russia and Russian aircraft...

Unclebenzs too much Carbon in the fuel, so basically, you can say it's running WITH coal =P
Fuel with much lead causes a yellowed smoke, and with much sulphur causes a grey smoke and produces lots of other sulfides...

These engines, designed in the 1950s when not so many people worried about the environment, have a system for boosting take-off power that works by injecting lots of extra fuel and also, so that things do not overheat, reducing compression by releasing the air from the first couple of stages of the compressor. In effect some of the excess fuel serves to cool the engine and to avoid exposing the hot parts to an oxidising atmosphere. The system is disengaged a few minutes after take-off and the engines then cease to make any smoke.

I don't know about this aircraft specifically but generally speaking, the smoke is created through an incomplete process of combustion, actually it happens because of the combustion chamber design, the older ones used to have a longer flame in the combustors, so the flame tip would have unburnt fuel, and this fuel would be carbonized later in the engine. This was solved by changing the airflow, making the flame shorter and a more complete process of combustion. All the engines release soot, especially the ones with unburnt fuel/incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon. But the difference is the amount, where it makes the soots visible.

3- they forgot to rise the gear up while performing some poorly controlled initial climb.
