EY Employee Death: Father reveals details, manager prioritises cricket over employee well-being

  • Father of the EY employee Anna Sebastian Perayil, Sibi Joseph shared some important details about the ‘workload’ of her daughter. He said, “She joined there on March 18. After one week, she started the regular auditing. There are 6 audit teams in EY Pune and she was included in the 6th team. The assistant manager allotted and the Audit Manager reviewed the work. She had to work late into the night. After reaching back to her PG also, she had to do additional work which was not concerned with her work. She was not getting time to sleep and eat. She was stressed and she had work pressure. The manager did not review the work on time, he did it on his schedule. He is a cricket fan and he changed his schedule according to the match schedule. And because of that, she had to sit late to complete the work assigned to her. She used to cry on the phone that she could not work with so much tension and stress. We asked her to resign and come back. She decided to continue because she said that she was getting more exposure in EY. Unfortunately, on July 21, she collapsed in her room and died before reaching the hospital... Union Minister Suresh Gopi visited us today and said that he will raise the issue in the Parliament.”

The main problem is the unaccounted work being given in Indian IT corporates. They give us one or two tasks during the sprint planning. But in between the sprint they give us the remaining 80% of the work which goes unaccounted. Also, in my previous company which had a distributed team (India + US), the US teammates only work for 6 hours per day. But our Indian manager will force us to work 14 hours per day to show more productivity. The US teammates will switch off their phone after work hours, but we have to give support 24x7, else we will be fired. It's really pathetic the way they treat us in Indian companies. It's literally like, they are working to make a living, but we are living only to work. The government is also turning a blind eye to these corporate behaviours which leaves us only option to start an employee union ourselves. Then the government will listen to us for the vote bank.

EY should be made accountable. The government should take severe action over this unruliness. They should set an example of what will happen if the corporates try to exploit the employees. If they decide to turn a blind eye to this in order to support the corporates, then they will lose out on the youngsters votes.

I have worked in the private sector for the last 17 years across industries & I have averaged 72 hours per week. Although I have made a reasonable amount of capital, it has taken a severe toll on my health. I finally quit last year after 2 consecutive surgeries. The scenario is really bad across industries due to revenue targets, competition & cost cutting. A corporate runs on profit & if you are getting a 10 lac p.a package, you have to generate 10 times of your salary as revenue to keep your job. That's the benchmark. It's a call an individual has to take - if to join the game , how long to play & when to quit. But always remember that your life is too precious.

Profit is fine. (Double digit) Increase in profit every year? Squeeze people to get year on year increase in profit? Assure everything in the world to Customers to get the project and putting pressure on people to meet the impractical commitments is fine? If someone is performing their job correctly rating them as "meeting expectations" and having two more levels just to avoid payouts and promotions is right? My manager is not doing his core work. He assigned it to me and he is focussing on that extra things to get promotion. He just works for his boss. That's it.
The corporate engine has to be overhauled thoroughly.

I have 5 ppl who work with big-4 in my building and I've never seen any of them arrive before midnight. Avg arrival time is 1230am...2am isn't unusual. Weight gain and insomnia are freq issues. Sometimes even with Managers. Again, other companies in other business domains are not too different. Unfortunately all that India has to offer is cheap work and not classy work. Which means there will be more hours than pay. And there will be people who will drop the ball - which will inc work hours for entire team. Trying to compete with lack of quality, talent, and currency /paying power translates into sucha work culture.

EY as well as her manager should be held accountable for her death. Are we going back to the age of servitude? This kind of workload on employees? They say the people are their most valuable assets but no money is most precious to them. When I was required to delegate work to our off shore team I made sure there was no unrealistic expectations put on the team even if my manager wanted me to do so. I used to put my foot on unnecessary deadlines. Shame of EY and her manager. I hope a formal complaint has been made with Indian authorities.

Working in corporate is rat race and stressful but in India it is more so. 90% of the managers lack management and leadership skills and carry many toxic traits which company leaders ignore because they only look at outcomes achieved and timelines met. Poor resources and budget planning leads to unmanageable workload and scope-creep. Companies in India make it difficult for employees to switch jobs with unfair 3 months notice period (another mean for exploiting) and demanding an experience letter from previous company at the time of hiring. A lot of people leave India to get out from this never ending toxic work culture and environment.

Bringing in labour laws with minimum wage, 5 day work weeks, overtime pay for extra hours, right to disconnect, mandatory paid leaves, mandatory disability friendly workspaces etc. will mean that corporates and private employers will have to distribute work more evenly compelling them to hire more employees in turn. That will create more jobs and boost the economy. The second compelling need I feel is for IT Employees to have unions because without it, we have zero negotiation power even when one of our own dies. If this incident does not shake this society, then more Indians will immigrate and we should stop judging them! 😞

EY can always say that they did not breach the labour laws in any way .
Besides this, the managers get evaluated in the company based on how well they get work which is supposed to be done by 10 people with just 2-3 people failing which they would be kicked out of the company. So it is literally their job to see who is available and allocate tasks to them continuously. If they can prove that they allocated tasks to all the team members in a similar way and did not target her by giving her too much work, how can they be arrested?
