There is no doubt about the long working hours in the Indian IT company. I work in one of the four big IT service companies in India. When I joined a new project, I asked my manager about the working hour. His answer was "we work round the clock" for the client. If you are a senior and if you do not work for 15 hours per day then you are looked upon by others as enjoying life and not in the league of those who are slogging it out in the company.

The big audit firms, Deloitte and E&Y, have brought time-sheet culture in legal and accounting sector. Their staff are are instructed to log 12 to 14 hours a day while doing clients work so that these firms could bill large amounts. I had seen the poor and sorry looking freshly-passed-out charted accountants work from 10 in the morning to 10 at night, sometimes till midnight too. They are told by their bosses to stretch time and do shoddy work but bill the clients a fortune. A charted accountant who is well-breed will never work for Deloitte or E&Y.

Yes these law firms pay well but have no humanity or decency.

We insisted she leave the job and go for a less paying job with better work life balance.

Provide training to managers to be effective and empathetic leaders instead of spreading and promoting toxicity at work. Make laws for notice periods no more than two weeks and stop demanding experience letters from the previous company at the time of hiring. Incorporate 360 degree feedback mechanisms, make skip level engagements easier and conduct regular surveys on middle Management's operating styles and behaviors.

    want to comment on this.
In India we assume that the employee or employer who work much more hours in Office i.e. govt. sector or private sector is more efficient than others. In private sector they harass employee like a slaves. We here
understand that employee are not a machine but he/she is human being. He/she require time for family, friends and relatives which cause reduces his/her tension and result in upliftment in his/her performance at work place.
But unfortunately our labour laws are only on papers they are not strictly implement like Europe countries or developed western countries which result in employee suicide.
I hope the unfortunate incident cause for govt. intervention on labour policy.
This is my opinion please comment on this.

the guy with long hair had no idea to support whom..the problem is not the leaders its the top hierachy who sets the goal ..Recently they all started to be more centric on budjeting and cost saving and downsizing work force,to accomadate these changes the leaders needs to utilize more than 110 percentage from employees with lesser work force which matters the most..Even if the leaders change as long as the wrong process is defined things will be the same

The problem is not just about gen z or gen x people it's about inhuman expectations , when does an expectations become inhuman?? When the management without seeing the person efforts expects him to generate revenue and it happened in a handful companies in the 70s and in the 80s again a handful , it was quite good probably in the 90s when India opened its economy like bpos etc and what have you but then the start up culture came up in the country and then all of sudden those few managers from few companies started spreading to multiple companies, this practice seems normal that they are okay to over burden or fire people under 2 months or three months, look at the attrition rate in some IT companies or start ups or bpos and look at how low they are paid, and the turnover doesn't explain how the salaries of the people who are helping building the company are low, the same country has the third largest billionaires in terms of number but how come the employees working under them are depressed and are getting fired for un realistic goals, and I do have proof to back up this statement. There is a problem with what india did and that was to think it's okay to do what Japan did and that was to just keep on working like a donkey.

On a human level and spiritual level we have to consciously ensure that we do not harass our juniors because karma will not leave you trust me , you are spoiling your saturn which is related to labour and mass works who work below you , so be careful before mis treating someone who is working for you , it will come to bite you very bad in life.

No human being worth his capacity can work for more than 8 hours every day. It is foolish on the part of the companies to expect this folly. Human beings are humans not robots. Even robots fail if their battery is drained they have to be recharged. Roti, Kapda aur Makan! This is our Indian motto

The question to be raised is why indian employees are exploited to the hilt and the new joinees are exploited even more. Even the pay disparity is far too much for india compared to the west. You won't find the western employees slogging like the indians alongwith the pay disparity let alone being rewarded meagerly for cost-effective ideas put worth, smart time management at work, innovative ideas, so on and so forth.
Government employees compare their salary to the corporate ones. Are they slogging out like the corporate that raise in basic, da, hra and promotions and benefits they want. They want to have big cars without even sweating it out. All they can see is corporates are paid well. Tell them to work their ass out day in and out, then they will know that nothing comes free in life and not to forget as i had mentioned earlier indians are made to work their shit out but paid peanuts compared to their western counterparts. This has been existing since several years ago which can be termed as 'Modern Slavery ' and has only gotten worser and worser over the coming years. It's high time for drastic change which was already overdue long back. Had our labour ministry been employee-centric just like the western counterparts, today our country could have been proud of their happy employees thereby setting the role model.
I totally agree with what Mr. Prabir Jha.

If the boss has relevant experience and realistic expectations from subordinates, and subordinates also has also required and relevant/ qualifications, skills and experience , then work could be a pleassure. Inadequate experience of the Executives and Managers who agrees to / given even a very realistic schedules are also bound to experience tension / pressure which cannot be put under too much work or environment. When wrong persons are struggling to do any work , that's hard work and tension is bound ti happen as a main product irrespective of the schedule. Right person is doing work under a wrong person same thing happens. These are the causes of any Occupational Health Hazard like this. Analyse and see for yourselves.

Anna Sebastian did not die due to overwork. She died due to a heart attack as per her death certificate. She had gone to a cardiologist 2 weeks prior to death with severe chest pain. 1 normal ECG does not rule out a heart attack. He should have admitted the patient and done cardiac enzymes,an echocardiogram ,a stress ECG and a CT coronary angiogram. Without doing any of these things he sent her home on antacids. He is guilty of medical negligence. Us Indians can have a heart attack as young as 25 years. She could have been one of those rare ones. There are other cardiac conditions which can cause sudden death in a young adult

Corporate greed is the root cause of everything . Corporates are thinking only about their Top End ,Year on Year revenue growth , no social commitments. They're exploiting the unemployment situation. Moreover labour laws in India are in favour of corporates only. People like Narayana Moorthy advocating to work 70 hours in a week. Buisness are running for profit , but it must be with little bit human touch .

Managers assign workloads that force subordinates to work at least 14 hours a day, far exceeding the global standard of 8 hours. As a result, 58% of their day is consumed, often justified by high salaries, perks, and benefits. Meanwhile, the government takes a hefty 48% of their earnings through income tax and GST.

QGood discussion. Bug nothing is going go change. As long as supply pipeline of talent is plentiful and we show disdain and contempt for work life balance, sheer competitive forces and need for speed will drag the front linr brain worker into the spiral of burn out. Whike we blindly copy the West on performance ratings and bell curve, time to pause and learn from them on how to treat people with respect.
