I'm Gettin' OFF GRID to Create an Alaskan Homestead┃EP1┃ The Journey Begins!

  • Hey there! I’m Sean Paul, I’m 29 and I just made the biggest leap of faith in my life. I grew up in North Florida and lived in Southern Georgia for most of my adult life. Living in cities is all I’ve ever known, and lately, I’ve felt overwhelmed by the fast paced lifestyle and generally feelin' out of place.
    Without much resistance, I sold everything I could, packed what I needed in one truck, and set my sights for Alaska! A place I’ve never been to and only knew of through stories. I came with my dog Gracie, my cat Saoirse, and a dream to build an off-grid sanctuary in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness!
    I’ve never built a cabin, I’ve never had to survive harsh winters/wild encounters, and I’ve always had society’s comforts at my fingertips. Do I have what it takes to thrive and survive on my own? I decided life is short, tomorrow is never guaranteed, and I’m turning my “what ifs” into a reality!

    A little advice dont pull stuff with it attached to your rack on the atv. Hook it to your trailer hitch. You will destroy your rack and that is also why it keeps standing up with you .

    Sean - next time in town, buy yourself a second chain for the saw and a Stihl 2-in-1 file to sharpen the chain. It will be less than $100 bucks an you'll be able to keep your sawchain working. Everytime you cut "fallen" logs you are picking up dirt and crud that over time with dull and lessen the performance of the saw.. A sharp chain is paramount.

    • @Lt_Tragg
      @Lt_Tragg หลายเดือนก่อน

      And make sure it’s properly adjusted and the chain luber is lubing the chain.

    Hello Sean, I just found your channel. I have lived in Alaska all my life, 76 years and have lived in the middle of the real Wilderness and lived in a 12'x14' wall tent. I would like to give you a few pointers if you care. What area are you in? To save time and wear and tear on your 4 wheeler, instead of pulling those long logs out, just spend a day cutting them in 16" blocks set them aside stacked, this is when you want to start cutting your firewood and cover them. One chore a day, firewood is the most import thing along with a roof over your head. This is July, Fall and Winter is right a round the corner and you need all the time you can get to be ready. Are you planning a log cabin or stick built? If you have no experience in building, get someone to help you build a small shed to stay in until next Spring. This way, you have a roof over your head, easy to heat and next Spring you will have a place to store your tools. Think about it and don't forget about a water source. Good luck

    Hey man, good luck! Legend decision.
    You are very lucky :D
    Please do me a favour... Don't attach chain to your cage on your bike. Its meant to hold thing down to your bike...
    Use the drawer bar where the trainer hitch is meant to go.
    You can buy proper hitch that will fit there... Also, shorter chain = more log in the air. More log in air = less drag. Less drag = Longer logs..
    But as others have said. Clean em up first.
    Chainsaw... There are teeth on body at the closest part of the bar closest towards you. To be clear, the teeth face away from you.
    Let the chainsaw (control it) slowly drag you onto the teeth. The saw can do a lot more of the work locked in against the wood.
    You are a legend! Keep up the good work.
    If I can help, reach out.
    Gracie... Good dog! Sit... Stay! Good dog.

    Dude you are working hard. I love to see your spirit, it will get better. I’m concerned for you. Safety is important, no going the say that. Make it a priority. Gloves, hard hat with face shield, hearing protection. None of this is unusual if you haven’t done this before. Watch some TH-cam off grid channels or felling trees. I strongly encourage you the watch the videos or if a friend up there and ask them to show you how to do this. Video the instructions they give you. All of it. That way you can refer back to it if you have questions and watch it before you fell asleep tree. Again you’re doing fine just tweak what and how you’re using the chain saw. You will accomplish much more in less time when you get some experience.
    Good Luck from one Texan to another.
    I hope stay safe and

    Good idea getting chainsaw chaps especially since you're unfamiliar with using a chainsaw. That being said, let the dogs (spikey bits where the bar and body meet) dig into whatever you're cutting and use them to pivot the bar down. Also keep that chain out of the dirt. One quick rip in the dirt dulls the blades like crazy. A spare chain and a sharpening kit are a must. Another good purchase would be a cant hook/timber jack to get a lot of leverage on those logs. Most important thing about running a saw, plan your cuts and be aware of what's around your cut. Secondly, give Gracie some pets.

    • @GettinOffGrid

    First of all...GOOD ON YA, EH!
    Now the tough stuff - from a grizzled old Canadian (B.C.) bush guy here's some things you should get:
    Good leather gloves, a peavey for moving logs around, a shackle to attach the grab chain to the LOWER TAB HITCH on the frame of your ATV. Get a good bow saw and some felling wedges for felling and getting your saw unstuck...also a spare bar for your saw if it gets REALLY stuck. Not being preachy...just love watching people succeed. Look forward to more.
    Also, harvest dry dead logs and dead standing trees first for winter - it doesn't need to season as long.
    Cheers!

    • @brumac44
      @brumac44 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No need for me to put my 6 cents in. At least he's wearing chaps. Peaveys are nice, but a good strong liner (pry) bar will be more versatile. When you ain't got either, a long, strong pole, and a block of wood to lever against will free your bar most times. Best way to get a chainsaw unstuck is never get it stuck in the first place. Guess I did put a couple cents in.😀

    Sean, nice piece of land you got, happy for you & your new adventure!! A few suggestions, first, regarding bears, get yourself at least one MARINE GRADE AIR HORN, louder & more annoying than a regular air horn, if thats possible..😖 I've seen air horns scare off bear when shouting didn't work, plus good for moose & other wild animals, and will save you ammunition on warning shots, & keep with you at all times with bear spray & a gun!! Make sure to do regular maintenance on your chainsaw, you aren't kidding they can mess you up, my sister's boyfriend did some logging one summer, the chain blade came off & ripped through his hands & arms, he was lucky he lived through it, only ended up losing part of a finger.. I would also suggest wearing a good pair of chainsaw gloves when operating it. Also, cut off the tree branches prior to dragging them, and try to lift the log a bit before cutting, if you hit the ground or a rock it dulls the blades. You'll do great, your subscribers will give you some good advice to help you along too! Look forward to following you from the start of your channel! 😊

    Little bit of advice, get yourself a better and larger trailer. Always carry an axe (felling or woodsmen) and wedges. Last bit of advice think twice before you do something you are unfamiliar with, if it feels sketchy it probably is, the kiss principle works and commonsense is learned. Best of luck to you Sean.
