It sounds like the theory of “cravings” just being your body and/or brain asking for what it is “lacking”. Not that a hunter needs to be a farmer, or vice versa, but more in that some brains likely “crave” an occasional jaunt outside of the comfort zone for any number of any possible reasons.

ADHD is basically just having chaotic thoughts and anxiety (repetitive analysis). If you can master that chaos, it's actually a huge asset and can lead you to learning more and doing more than most people. A difficult road, but possible.
This could be one of the most mind blowing videos I ever watched. I grew up with sonic and I have add, love speed, and exploring new routes and making new discoveries, and definitely hate many of the socially imposed systems that restrict us. Is it possible I ended up like this because of sonic or was it just a coincidence... I may never know 😮
I was old enough to remember this phenomenon. Nintendo was considered "The Establishment" at the time, Sega was Considered the "Cool" Console and had Signature Games was fast paced (Sonic Series, Earthworm Jim etc.) Playstation came out in 95? AndIt had games on CDs, Higher Graphics, more variety of games etc. Along withits Signature Series (Crash Bandicoot) that dosent require No thinking. Kinda of a ripoff of Both Mario and Sonic come to think of it But back to this, I enjoyed Both Mario and Sonic as a kid, and while i loved Sonic, Super Mario always had a special place in my heart. Plus it makes sense with the Farmer "plan ahead" theory. Which is more my personality
I must be an oddball. I love Sonic far more than Mario, but my favorite games _also_ tend to be strategy focused, like Age of Empires (set to a low speed).
Love the video and I never thought of it that way. But I think you are spot on. Now, what about those that love both games? I loved and played both growing up. I remember when Sonic and Knuckles came out and you could attach to Sonic 3. Was epic trying to get all of the super emeralds. Never could. LOL
As a hunter knowing what animals are around in a season. Setting multiple traps across the landscape. Making and finding resources for tools and weapons. Knowing if the expenditure of effort is worth the gain is pretty complex, with a lot of long term thinking.
Hypothesis is very intriguing and actually does validate a lot of thoughts that I had. I am a very big Mario fan and I love playing the game my wife on the other hand like Sonic the Hedgehog on top of that she has ADHD she is much better at video games of that platform unlike me which enjoys RPGs strategy games puzzled excetera excetera. This make a a lot of sense if you really looking to what you're actually saying
Being a person with the attention span of a flea... I would have to say yes on Sonic, The Hunter Theory and that dudes take that hunters are amongst the masses. Added to the effect of not quite fitting in to a social construct. Good take & nice vid.
ADHD is not a mistake. Its the backup system for when weird shit happens. Humans are social creatures that prefers to stay in groups. And outlying personalities inside a given group tends to make the group stronger. I think that many of the more common "disorders" are really evolutionary tools that increase the survival rate of the group. Like some ant species have larger individuals who are called in for speciffic tasks such as heavy lifting or cutting. Humans have extroverts to create social connections with other groups, introverts to analyze the environment, paranoid individuals to be on lookout for potential danger, insomniacs to keep guard at night and the people with adhd to be more addaptive. My lacking ability to focus on a single task for years and years means I havent really mastered anything. But on the other hand my tendency to switch focus on a regular basis have given me a wide base of skillsets allowing me to atleast assist the more specialised individuals when more hands are required on a given project. Im not a smith but I can operate most of the machinery and understand instructions given by the smith. Im not a carpenter but I can use the tools.
It helps that because of the way we think and because we look for a wide variety of skills i always saw adhd as the handyman of talents and its because of our wide variety of learning that helps us think "outside the box" i consider most of my solutions in the box but i still managed to shorten bedmass to just bdms because i found 4 steps pointless and just an over explanation of how you solved a math problem
@@OokamiKageGinGetsu I'm also convinced that most RPG:s today are made for both gamer types by design in order to achieve a wider audience, which in this case is really nice. In the Skyrim case, it really seems to have hit the nail in the head.
As someone that has been diagnosed with ADHD, I believe it is a little bit of both. On my meds I contemplate everything I do in a very organized fashion. When not on my meds, I rapidly peel through every possible outcome as rapidly as possible. One give me the ability to complete tasks very efficiently. The other gives me the ability to complete only the necessary tasks for my survival l while never completeing any of the side quests that are equally as inportant to most people.
I think there can be a spectrum for both ends, and I like the idea that ADHD is a cognitive difference rather than disorder. I say this from personal experience only, I love taking my time on stuff, creating nice comfy bases and having a pleasant time (I've found myself running out of time on Mario games), but when it's action time I often have the backing of my passive work to back up a chaotic carpet bombing of a fight. Kinda like how Engineer works on TF2, it's slower, passive, pretty relaxing at time,s but when it's time to fight you got the most powerful singe firearm ever, a recovery station, guns and gadgets at hand AND gotta keep yourself and your machines alive. It's a delightful pendulum
Honestly I can't pick which one I really am I never played sonic but I love his characters and ring all the game. And I LOVE looking back at how we evolved and how we can link all that back to our day to day lives.
And subscribed. I like the theory for sure. I played both growing up though. I had old NES Mario and Sonic on Genesis. Had to get the G for Mortal Konbat.
Sonic was one of my childhood favorites. Funny thing is that I also liked military flight sims like falcon 3.0 you could spend 2 hours planning the mission and arming your flight of f16's. It had a manual that was like a phone book. I also enjoy the entire xcom series, but I love gran turismo also. So what does that make me?
Would be interesting to see an analysis of different common disorders and their respective gaming preferences. I'm sure there would be something interesting to see about the autistic brain. Or people with OCD. All of these are fairly common and certainly have a good reason found in our evolutionary history.
In some cases, afflictions involving attention and focus, like other neurological disorders, are caused by diet and autoimmune issues. Some earlier studies into autism found some interesting links worth exploring.
I think it is an interesting idea. I believe what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I loved Mario Bros 3 and the mega man series. I didn't have the same sort of interest with Sonic. I find the whole speedrun phenomena strange but entertaining to watch.
Fascinating. Any thoughts on games that mux and match both thinking styles, like Half-Life, or even more significantly, Stalker (where you explore, get into shootouts, but have to stock up your inventory and plan ahead)?
I figured adhd and add would best be adapted to. Like home school the kid or let them be. This video game hypothesis would explain our fixation on video games.
I think this is an awesome analysis. What about deep thinkers and creative types? They kind of overlap with both the farmers and the hunters, right? Slow, methodical planning goes into inventing, writing, etc. But there's also a fiery spontaneity to creative pursuits. It makes me think of games which employ modes of inner exploration, à la Zelda, Myst, etc.
So... What does it mean if my favorite game series is Final Fantasy? And I always feel like I have to complete them 100%. I must do every side quest; obtain every item; max out all stats and abilities.
I like to equate the rings sonic has collected to the number of rings I've had to jump through at the will and to the glory of our greater existencial entity.

I have mega ADHD and I loved playing sonic the hedgehog as a kid in the early 90's :) I also played Mario too. Man 1991 was great, it was an awesome time to be a 9 year old kid. I did love sonic way more tho.
I'd like to see an expansion of this theory with other games that don't follow these 2 molds. Like Zelda or first person shooters which have very different. Goals and play styles. Or how about games that are stealth based and more tactical vs something more out in the open like racing?
I think the brains we're subconsciously gearing up the children's brains for a situational necessity for increased brain growth, schools and social growth.
Hard to pick from the original Star Wars Battlefronts, GTA, or the Total War franchise. All I assume would make an psychoanalyst pyramid their fingers in concern.
I have adhd, but honestly I hated most original sonic games _because_ they had the stupid splitting paths that made me just worry if I took the wrong path or if the game would let me go back to it again
I'm fairly neurotypical and farmer brained and YEAH holy crap I totally see it. I love open worlds with no particular goal or speed. Mario was so fun. I loved that shit. I miss a lot about the 90s.
Dr. Gabor Maté suggests that AD[H]D is, or at least could be a kind of a protective mechanism against stress. When someone is in a place where they feel great stress or threat, their option is to 'fight, flee, or ask for help', but when none of these are possibilities and the pain becomes too unbearable, the mind distracts itself or dissociates. If this happens constantly during infancy, then the brain adapts it as a default setting. This can easily be the case with babies if they have emotionally unavailable caretakers.
Edgar Casey? Might be the wrong person.... Said something... about something.... Yea, he talked about the Ego, what did he say again? Think ill go look em up.... refresh, I used a lot of his work to silence my thoughts. Its not actually thoughts, its the tendency to enter unstable lines of thought, lack of focus. Eventually it dose fade and is not so dominant.
first game I ever played when I was 2 years old was Resident evil on the Playstation one, terrified me but I loved it, still do to this day. From there I went to games like metal gear solid, tomb raider and silent hill. Fuck knows what this says about me haha interesting video my dude. just found the channel and I am enjoying so far.
I had been diagnosed with adhd. Whatever it is, I’d say that I have it. I don’t think it’s a disorder though. I think modern sentimentalities of order are just arbitrary. Maybe this these descriptions could be helpful to your practice. I hate reading but I LOVE exploring new ideas and concepts. I also happen to have played both sonic and Mario three as a kid and I DEFINITELY liked sonic more. I am actually rather bad at video games. My little brother had always been good at them, but I always took to much time playing around with the controls and the world. Even now after I got home from college I found out that my brother had the Arkham knight game. I hadn’t played a Batman game before but I was perfectly content playing around with the side missions only doing the main story of I had to in order to get access to new maps he didn’t like watching me because I never seemed to play the game with purpose rather electing to wonder aimlessly. Right now I believe that breath of the wild is the best game ever made. I think pubG is a much more entertaining game than fortnight. I think it is because you don’t have to be good at the game to win, you just have to be clever and think outside the box of the simple Mechanics given. My least favorite activity is doing paperwork. Truly I’d much rather suffer the dentist visit, or take the shot than do the necessary paperwork to have the appointment. Even though the check in process is less work than going through customs, my least favorite thing about airports is the paperwork. I’ve literally denied going on spring break vacations that I could afford because I figured whatever adventure I could find in travel, it would not be worth the little bit of paperwork that would be necessary to go. I had the opportunity to travel China but only stayed in one city for a year because I wanted to avoid paperwork. If I have a disorder, I think it more like a fear of paperwork than it is adhd. I say all of this because I think it makes his hunter brain point. I like the idea. Ever since I was a kid and was diagnosed with adhd and my parents would ask me if I wanted to try taking add drugs, I refused to. I knew the scientists thought I was busted, but I thought their methods were busted. I thought that even if they were right, that I didn’t care and I was determined not to be treated like a freak. I wouldn’t take drugs and I wouldn’t take extra time on times exams which my state offered people with adhd. If my “disorder” caused me to fail school and fail at life than that is just how it was going to be. At 11 years old I knew that if I succeeded at life because I had a leg up over everyone else given to me, than I would never know if I deserved that success or failure. People have tried to explain to me that it’s not cheating. It’s like not having legs and racing in a wheal chair. I guess my mentality was that if I didn’t have legs, I was not meant to ever win a running race.
So this makes me confused I am diagnosed with adhd but I still am good at routine tasks (not on paper it requires some action) but I still do the ooh shiny and any thing that moves a centimeter in the corner of my eye my attention darts to it so what that mean
That’s why adhd is so difficult to diagnose. Because what is normal to some is not normal to others and it is how much you think and how much time it consume in your daily life. We are good at routine tasks but we have to work on it a little more than others
I always thought people who got a nintendo played mario and people who got a sega played sonic. I had a sega so I played sonic, when i went to my friends house they had a nintendo so played mario, and both games were lots of fun. However if that were not a factor, then yes, you could be right. As someone who played the Sonic games, to me it is almost about catching a rhythm that is within the game, after a few plays you start to feel it and thus can intuit what the gist of what the next move may be.
I was diagnosed ADHD as a child, and I'm not going to argue what the system defines as ADHD.If that's what they call it fine, however I agree partially with this hunter/farmer mind theory.Partially because I'm not sure it fully covers all aspects of these minds. The only real problem with this Hunter mind it is we have a society that isn't well equipped to deal with and make use of it as it is.
I always prefered building games (Minecraft, Space engineers, etc) I guess that makes me a Farmer brain. Having thought about it, wouldn't the difficulty prefered in games also be affected? Hunter brains would be more interested in more difficult games where a miscalculation can kill you?
Hmm. Let's take it to a different level I'm a action rpg fan and my favorite game is phantasy star online. The thing about this game it let me learn something that is totally complex but if I have to say now my guess will be "prepare wisely and treat it like it's reality"
Huh, I never played mario or sonic, I played lots of fps games like doom, halo, tf2, and cod. I just never saw the interest in anything without guns. Even so this video was really interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.
Well, I'm diagnosed clinically with ADHD, and Sonic games always had the ability/potential to make me angrier, more stressed and frustrated than Mario games.
I’ve been thinking most of these “disorders” are just different ways of thinking. If you aren’t dyslexic or autistic or have Down syndrome I don’t believe you have any disorder. You just think differently and thoughts can always be changed with enough work
i don’t know , let me see Z , sonic , is it about Sony ikë , it’s nintendo or sega , (sonic) does that sabrewolf round thing and has the thunder Mohawk , is it ?
Could you do a video on what type of thinking you have like (assassins creed) vs ( call of duty or halo) that would be interesting to find out about different thought patterns
Geezz Mario 3 has way more secrets than Sonic...Also the gameplay is the same, the fact that Sonic can move faster it does not change, also. Most level you can't actually keep ruining... The hitpoint does make sense...
So what if you were in both camps? Like for real... I mastered both?!? And then Crash when that came out? I also can't resist a pinball machine, or an old Pac-man cabinet when I come across one... 🤷♂️
So what does that say about someone like myself who as a child loved Sonic... but now I am an adult I love grand strategy games like crusader kings 2 and loathe games like cod
Well, this explains why I can pull off incredible things in clutch situations but have trouble keeping up with things like day-to-day chores.

@@gokurules22 - You have my sympathy. I sometimes feel as if I was part of the last generation that was raised with a semblance of sanity... I can't imagine the things you had to deal with from authority figures growing up.
@@rodjacksonx i don't get a lot of sympathy. Just a lot of "be grateful you at least had a home and food in your belly." Completely ignoring how i got in foster care in the first place..
@@gokurules22 - Yeah, a lot of cold people out there. And the more "together" you appear--especially as a man--the more you're expected to just suck it up and ignore anything negative in your past. (Not that I'm suggesting we sit around crying about our childhoods, but telling someone who grew up in foster care to "at least be grateful you had X," as if you weren't already, is pretty sad.) Don't let those sorts keep you down--they won't ever get it.
Kinda of a ripoff of Both Mario and Sonic come to think of it
But back to this, I enjoyed Both Mario and Sonic as a kid, and while i loved Sonic, Super Mario always had a special place in my heart.
LOL
This is the stuff my brain loves. Great work.
Maybe I shouldn't mention that the original Duke Nukem also came out in '91...
Hmmmm... that's an antisocial personality disorder episode that writes itself.
😂
Nukemis def a hunter :D :D :D
@@WillariousTheTherapist In archetypal terms, Undyne + Papyrus = Duke Nukem. Alphys + Undyne = Dwight Schrute.
Chaos - Hunter Brain
Order - Farmer Brain
I always say I’m a Jack of all trades but master of none. 😆
I'm inclined to agree
It helps that because of the way we think and because we look for a wide variety of skills i always saw adhd as the handyman of talents and its because of our wide variety of learning that helps us think "outside the box" i consider most of my solutions in the box but i still managed to shorten bedmass to just bdms because i found 4 steps pointless and just an over explanation of how you solved a math problem
ADHD literally makes people have less efficient thinking and they complete things slower due to fewer neurotransmitters. What are you talking about?
@@AvatarRoku999 none of what you said invalidates the original post
Willarious The Therapist What does it say about Skyrim players? Besides the obvious liking to shout things off of cliffs part, I mean.
I'm pretty sure it was designed specifically so that it appeals to both hunters and farmers.
@@mikitz Yeah, but only with the Hearthfire expansion.
@@OokamiKageGinGetsu I'm also convinced that most RPG:s today are made for both gamer types by design in order to achieve a wider audience, which in this case is really nice. In the Skyrim case, it really seems to have hit the nail in the head.
@@mikitz True. But you also need the Hearthfire expansion for nails too.
@@OokamiKageGinGetsu Sure. Although Fallout 4 more or less perfected that.
Oh, i feel satisfied that I love Sonic games lul. PS - That flying battery tune - well done :D
Thank you for not playing that anxiety-inducing Sonic countdown to drown music.
Psychology and game design in one video? Count me in!
I also liked both Mario and Sonic when I was kid. And many other video games.
This is very clever! I like what you did with the two big franchises from my youth.
This was a very fun discussion.
This way an excellent video. Time to check out your channel!
I wonder how ultra-popular games like Tetris and Minecraft fit in your theory. Or time-tested games like Poker and Chess
I have tought about that how different personality types/brain types prefer different game types.
WOW! I'm 38 years old, and have NEVER completed a Mario game...but I've DOMINATED every Sonic I've ever played.
I was diagnosed with ADHD at 13
Awesome vid! You should do a video on dark souls and personality or something related to dark souls!
Would be interesting to see an analysis of different common disorders and their respective gaming preferences. I'm sure there would be something interesting to see about the autistic brain. Or people with OCD. All of these are fairly common and certainly have a good reason found in our evolutionary history.
Very incitefull I've never thought of sonic & Mario like that
Now do one with what it's like inside a mind of a Dark Souls player
In some cases, afflictions involving attention and focus, like other neurological disorders, are caused by diet and autoimmune issues. Some earlier studies into autism found some interesting links worth exploring.
I'm glad Factorio did not come out until later in my life.
I think it is an interesting idea. I believe what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I loved Mario Bros 3 and the mega man series. I didn't have the same sort of interest with Sonic. I find the whole speedrun phenomena strange but entertaining to watch.
That was flerking awesome! Thanks. Subbed.
Dude... this was brilliant. 👏
I think it just depends what mood you're in. 😂
Different mindsets show different views . But that might explain that i finished sonic before mario and that only recently found out i may be adhd.
Awesom, never imagine that condition this way.
In the Netflix show Sonic Prime, Sonic definitely has ADHD. So, I think you’re right.
I love the soundtrack to this video.
This makes more sense than I feel it should
I have the" disorder" but i do have time to do my house work, but when i have my Unnecessary Panic attack from my own family, My "disorder "get out of control and i know it happens, because they think play video games or working on my pictures from my own work on the internet is taking to much time on me?? when i have all my days plan all weeks, but they think being alone can get in to trouble with my conditions ,i know i have depression but being alone and doing my job keep me busy and my mind way from unnecessary problems that i don't need.
After a week of Work and Cleaning,i sit down on the weekends "if " i am Free to use my PC or My PS4
I use to Play Sonic and i still do...but i don't always have time to play video games....
For what i think,is not a Strong Disorder but Small problems that end up being BIG!! can Make you lost your focus and your concentration,i Live my life normally but sometimes bad things happens that i lost my way and things i want to do...,so yeah is see it as a normal thing but not as a Condition that well not make your life running normally.
such a good video dude
I have mega ADHD and I loved playing sonic the hedgehog as a kid in the early 90's :) I also played Mario too. Man 1991 was great, it was an awesome time to be a 9 year old kid. I did love sonic way more tho.
This is pretty cool :) I feel like it makes sense in the jobs we take too

So if the main game I've always refer to is METAL GEAR....what does that make me?
I'd like to see an expansion of this theory with other games that don't follow these 2 molds. Like Zelda or first person shooters which have very different. Goals and play styles. Or how about games that are stealth based and more tactical vs something more out in the open like racing?
Really enjoyed this
This theory is interesting
SQUIRREL!
That's an extremely early estimate for the beginning of agriculture but yeah
I subscribed with notifications for more videos like this please.
The thing about ADHD reminds me of Percy Jackson, who would've died many times without his hyperactivity.
first game I ever played when I was 2 years old was Resident evil on the Playstation one, terrified me but I loved it, still do to this day.
@@silviajimenez50 also by routine tasks I mean the hell that is gta 5 online
What if I'm the gamer who spends more time futzing around with Skyrim mods and trying to get them to work together than actually playing the game?
I literally played both hardcore as a child, so does that make me a "Hunter Gardener"?
What does it say about me that I can't pick a favorite between the two? I'm a big fan of both.
I’m a sonic fan, Mario just becomes all about the jump.
This also explains why Mario is still prevalent today, while Sonic has had a difficult road.
I will find a way to play a souls-like game like a Devil May Cry type of game
Huh, I never played mario or sonic, I played lots of fps games like doom, halo, tf2, and cod. I just never saw the interest in anything without guns. Even so this video was really interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.
Well, I'm diagnosed clinically with ADHD, and Sonic games always had the ability/potential to make me angrier, more stressed and frustrated than Mario games.
You know I am something of a hunter myself .
Very intriguing!! I'm A Sonic Fanboy!
what does hack n' slash or beat em' up games say about ourselves?
ADHD stands for Attention Def-Hey a Dollar
I’ve been thinking most of these “disorders” are just different ways of thinking. If you aren’t dyslexic or autistic or have Down syndrome I don’t believe you have any disorder. You just think differently and thoughts can always be changed with enough work
What about people who enjoyed both of these franchises equally? I honestly can't choose one over the other.
i don’t know , let me see Z , sonic , is it about Sony ikë , it’s nintendo or sega , (sonic) does that sabrewolf round thing and has the thunder Mohawk , is it ?
