Not Happy Living In Santa Rosa

Living on solar power can be difficult in northern areas. To find a little more sun, I traveled to Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa is about an hours drive north of San Francisco. As far as getting more solar, this was a good move. The drawback is that Santa Rosa is a big, busy and crowded city. And that has put me in a foul mood.
But Sonoma County is a great place. And today’s goal is to remind myself of that fact.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

That was a beautiful poem ! By the way we lived in Santa Rosa for a year it was a working vacation ! My sister lived there me n the kids loved it ! My husband worked at bodega bay the drive to his hotel was scenic ! They make the best bacon clam chowder ! Me n the kids would hang out at the beach all day then swim in the warm pool at his hotel ! We cried all the way to Austin when we left even our neighbors cried ! lol ! They have the best Chinese food ! I worked at sears it was so much fun my boss was so cool ! Fond memories of Santa Rosa !
I hear leaves drinking rain;
I hear rich leaves on top
Giving the poor beneath
Drop after drop;
This is a sweet noise to hear
These green leaves drinking near.
And when the Sun comes out,
After this Rain shall stop,
A wondrous Light will fill
Each dark, round drop;
I hope the Sun shines bright;
This will be a lovely sight.
Keep rolling, Scott.....

I love you being crabby😊 and I’m so glad you’re safe from the weather
The weather has been nearly ideal here
@@StaticCamperVanlol, that weather would make me cranky.
Glad to see you are safe from the worst weather of Southern CA. No sun is too bad but at least no trees are crashing down on you. Stay safe and hang in there.
It's raining a good deal this week, last week too. Myrtle Creek, Or.. just off 1-5.

There are still plenty of farms and dairies and what not especially along stony point Road. I am a lifer. 54 years this is a beautiful wonderful place to live, although yes, it is growing and losing some of its charm. It is still one of the prettiest places with so many great incredible sites throughout the county.
Ah, back when I used to live in the US, one of my favorite things to do on a rainy day was to hang out in Barnes and Noble. The atmosphere there was so cozy, and if I remember correctly, the coffee was decent enough to sip on while I perused books or just relaxed. There's something about the sound of rain outside while you're lost in a good book that's just magical. If you're ever in Santa Rosa, CA, check out the Barnes and Noble located in The Rosenberg Building at 700 4th Street. It's the perfect spot for a rainy day retreat.
They closed.in Salt Lake .very sad. Loved that store
I love how you have thoughts of discontent

A man who enjoys grocery shopping, good coffee, is particular about the foods he eats and a bargain shopper.. handsome and soft spoken & enjoys Van life to boot 😊 I'll shut my mouth now 😆
I hear you. 😉 ☕️ 🍩

Santa Rosa is pretty nice!❤ thanks Scott!🙏🏻😇🕊
I can definitely relate to the “not wanting to be here” feeling! Unfortunately, I’m not able to drive my home somewhere else. Also unfortunate is the fact that I still will not get to cross “visit a grocery outlet” off my bucket list; my friend cancelled my trip this week. 🥺 Your video is helping me feel better…thanks! 👍🏻 I’ll have to go rewatch some of your ocean videos to help me get by. 🌊
Oh no! I hope you can go someplace else
@@StaticCamperVan, unfortunately not. And my ticket is non-refundable. I guess I’ll just stay home and binge watch your videos! 😅
@sarahwalsh27 that’s a big bummer
Love Those "Happy Eggs", the yolks are a nice orange. Take care Scott!
Hi Scott! I’m out delivering food. The notification for your video just popped up on my phone. I’ll be watching in between food orders. Hope you’re doing well! 🙌
Have a great shift! I’m doing good thanks
You were having what us gals call a PMS day! LOL!
Haha
You are so right! 😂

Enjoying your channel you’re so chill,I’ve never been a coffee drinker but always loved the smell. Im now enjoying a cup of coffee in the mornings sometimes afternoon while watching your videos😊
☕
I’m 66 and very new to coffee drinking. I think it’s really the vanilla flavored creamer I’m loving, coffee is just the delivery method! I enjoy these videos a lot too!
I always look forward to seeing you
Thank you
So glad to see you on Monday. It really gives me something nice to look forward to.
Thanks Wendy. I’m doing my best to be here every Monday.
@StaticCamperVan Thanks so much for giving your time.
“Treacherously low on coffee!”😮
Aww rain - music to my ears, I have none up here in the San Juan Islands (at least not today). ☕️-definitely a must have! Stay safe and enjoy your time in Santa Rosa.
I'm not too far from you and the rain came in today and it's been raining pretty much all day so maybe you'll get it there tonight ❤ Love hearing the rain on the roof 😊
I hope the sun pops out for you soon Scott. Also hoping you and I both get a good transmission soon !
Sorry to hear you’re in the same situation. Happy thoughts until it works out
Your just great to watch. Your taco looked fine.
Wow, what a big rain shower. I also watch LA flight live. The planes coming in and out really splash.
I'm looking forward to the next coffee.
Thanks. Stay dry and its good to watch another video.
Hi. I just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago, and I love it. Thank you is been very inspirational for me. You make us feel like we are there experiencing all your journeys. I am 60 and more and more I think this is what I want to do . Thank you from Australia. Cheers Victor
Thanks Victor
Hahaha please find the coffee tomorrow!!
Such an enjoyable time with you. Your just really nice ,too. Nice cooking on the hamburger.
Goodnight😊😊
I always enjoy your videos. And yes, it is ok to have a good grumble from time to time. We all do it. Looking forward to your next video.
Better is better. Indeed.
Great vlog! Love the longer format.
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing this vlog. I always enjoy your vlogs- no matter the content (especially if there's some coffee in the content!).. I am glad Santa Rosa is working out for you with great food shopping, nice places to stay and friendly people. Hopefully you will find the same success with the coffee search. . Looking forward to hearing more. Wishing you good health and safe travels around Santa Rosa.
Aww, thanks.
Loved the video.....very calming and a true stress reducer. 👍😉
What an outstanding video, bravo!!
That was me! I was a perma camper until my van got towed while i was out doordashing in my doordash vehicle!
Through a lot of luck and hard work, i am now static camped with 3 vehicles and 1 travel trailer on family friends property!
I am going to downsize to just one vehicle, my van, plus the travel trailer sometime this summer.
Its always the coffee mate. :)
Very interesting been watching a few of your videos.
Like how you are setup and made it work even in a smaller space.
Really enjoy your videos Scott, keep smiling Greetings from Stockholm Sweden
Aww sorry to hear about everything, it’s raining hard throughout Cali, so there will be more rainy and/or cloudy plus windy days to come for all of us. If you can, grab some nice stew, warm bread or cornbread, and of course something nice and warm to drink. Stay dry and safe! ✨
Thanks. I’m guessing that you must have wrote this before watching any of this video
@@StaticCamperVanLol I was typing as you were making the potatoes. 😊 I would have preferred a stew vs the burger, but it seems I was in the vicinity.
Thank you. Your videos really make me think. Forced retirement has been difficult but your mind set has been very enlightening. Have a wonderful day.
It’s amazing how big your van seems with the different video angles!!
The TARDIS is spacious
I wanted to tell you the potatoes were sizzling, lol you caught it just in time. Be careful. Great video. I enjoyed the journey.
There is something about the rhythm of the city. I feel it every time I hit that 405 .... glad you're safe up there, and looking forward to your new local coffee adventure. 😺💜
Lots and lots of great coffee here
I hope things start getting better for you. 🤞
Thanks, as I said in the vlog, things really couldn’t be better
Hi Scott, be safe, enjoy grocery shopping, enjoy your coffee. Love you videos.❤😊
We all have days like that Scott keep the heart ❤up, love the videos x
I'm not really far from you in napa vallejo area I just found your channel love your content I'm a new beginner of vanlife myself seems like a cool lifestyle just getting all my things set up inside just try to build it up as I go. Love learning from your videos as well I'm glad I came across your channel
You did good to get out of your comfort zone. That's when serendipitous things happen like meeting friendly people. Sorry you had to go to Whole Foods. The flagship store is here in Austin. They don't do much to promote local brands. The "Keep Austin Wierd" slogan is all about that or was. The sleepy little college town image is long gone. BTW I discovered Yellow Bird through you, and recently scored big on a give away at a local trade show. I got all the flavors including the Plum Reaper Be very careful with that one. 😂😂😂
I couldn’t handle the Plum Reaper! I do really like the Ghost Pepper, but it’s a little too spicy sometimes
Very good video...easy to get into foul mood for us all! Thanks for making the video anyway! Great video but I am anxious for you to replenish your coffee supply..haha!
Really enjoy your channel. Your lifestyle makes me envious and grateful at the same time. Cheers from a fellow coffee lover.
Always hard to leave the coast. I camped at Pacific Beach this weekend...sunny and gorgeous...nice change from PT. Went to Fred Meyers in Bremmerton today to buy a sleeping pad like yours....thanks for sharing that affordable comfort. Loving Yellow Bird...thanks! Went to Pegasus on Bainbridge last week and bought Ethiopian Guji which I am so enjoying using a new Aero-Press...thanks for that too ~ If you ever pass through Quillcene traveling the Hood Canal, you may like Katkin Coffee which is a tiny loacal roaster who does some nice lighter roasts. Here's to the sunny days to come! Thank again ~
I’m not familiar with Katkin. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely check them out
Hi Scott. I hope you eventually find a place to hang out in Santa Rosa that you like. Now and then the bathroom buildings at parks have a power outlet sometimes on the outside wall somewhere. Picnic table areas also sometimes at day use areas. I travel mostly Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana.
Good night, and enjoy that coffee 🙋🏼♀️
Hi scott yeah you sounded a little moody in the beginning of the video but mellowed out later on. Your burger looked good. I'm also glad when you find places to sleep to for the night you seem totally comfortable.
I like how you convince, or should I say remind, yourself you like the rain. LOL
Living more than forty years in a desert makes me enjoy seeing rain
@@StaticCamperVan Water is Life... but sometimes Mother Nature can over do it.
You need to keep driving past San Francisco and see Big Sur abs Monterey. There are beautiful places to stealth camp
Yes, I’ve spent some time there last year. I never stealth camp though
Another good one, Scott 😊. Even though it was wet, and you were as grouchy as you get (which btw doesn't even register a one on a scale of zero to 10). Having an off day now and then is to be expected in life. Maybe in van life, it's just felt more because your day is more concentrated space wise and driving around in cities, where you'd rather be somewhere else, plus you were low on coffee ☕️ , that's got to account for something 😉. And that soldering kit may not be a bad idea. With all that metal and wiring, you got going on in your van, never know when something is going break or come apart. I figure it's just a matter of time considering your home is not exactly stationary for long stretches at a time. I took a soldering course once, and it was kinda fun learning it. Though, one has to have a steady hand if going to good at it. Stay safe and welded up.
I hear ya, January can make you moody. But good recovery at the end of the video commenting on how nice the people are.
After some of this super rainy weather leaves, come a bit north again. I know you'd be happier in Humboldt Co., a nicer vibe. I'm so glad I live where I do in Southern Oregon but for now the northern Californian coast close to the Oregon border is really nice. Come north and get your "elk fix", great coffee, and nice people.
I love this show!
Hi Scott from Salt Lake City, Utah. Just found you, will be watching more. You remind me of me!
I really enjoy when you film inside cozy rainy day! Especially inside your van 🚐 (cooking, drinking coffee talking other stuff!) hopefully you will filming longer next rainy day be safe Scott
You will like Monday’s vlog.
@@StaticCamperVanGreat! You are so humble and calm person.. Stay warm and cozy
I really like when you film like this so cozy and checking out all the new locations
Rainy days get me like that sometimes.

Hey Static.Hope all is well. The rain is upon us even down here in BC ,i guess tis is the season . See you were smart enough to atleast save enough beans for a morning coffee because the Bear comes out in me if i dont have that first cup asap upon rising. Tnx for the video and stay dry. 😂👊🌧🌨🌦🌥🌤⛅️☀️
Haha. Being in the city, I was in walking distance to coffee if needed!
It’s been oddly more sunny than rainy the whole time I’ve been here
Oh I guess I'm a perma camper😁😁😁😁
But my anxiety from the thing that happened keeps me from driving around 😇
Somehow I don’t think you have a pile of trash surrounding your van
@@StaticCamperVan 😁😁😁😁😁😁 no not at all 😇😇 😇 they probably would not let me park here if I was like that 😉
Scott, you should come down to San Francisco since you are already so far south. Lots of quiet neighborhoods to park, golden gate park is a lovely place to spend the day, and plenty of local coffees to try! Ive been loving life in a prius down here for a few months. Your videos have been a huge source of inspiration.
Thanks. Unfortunately my transmission is in such bad shape it’s simply not possible to drive the hills
@@StaticCamperVanBummer! Darn Chrysler. My girlfriend had a similar experience with her 2015 jeep that blew it's engine at 100k miles, and that bill was too high she had to get rid of the car! I'm sure you've heard this before but I have had good luck with Toyota dependability. I've considered the 1st and 2nd Gen sienna as they can be found on the used market for a great price, if you can stomach their lack of style😂. I bet the thought of parting with your van is tough, since you have such a lovely build.
We got some rain that turned into snow here in Northern Colorado the other day. I like the rain too but not when it freezes! ;) Take care!
I hear ya!
I like carrots with ranch dressing when I don't have other stuff to snack on, I like chips, gummies and licorice. Toast or just a slice of bread when I have nothing else, not healthy I know. I hope to change my habits this spring.
You are having a challenging day. I do love the rain.
It turned out to be such a great day didn't it
Here's a ((Hug)) from Washington. It is raining and 39°. I've had bronchitis for over a week and the coughing has definitely been a workout on my stomach muscles lol Dr says maybe I'll get some nice abs when this is over lol. We all have our ups and downs in van life but looking for the positive is what gets us through 😊❤ The sound of the rain on the floor is relaxing. I've always loved the rain too ❤. Hello Scott, Your narrative is always interesting. I don't know how you can figure out so much to talk about so spontaneously. You never seem to use notes or cues. Your so honest and genuine. Do you consider yourself retired? Your breakfast tacos look tasty. Now that you have so many years as a van dweller you have figured out what you have to do to sustain your lifestyle. Coffee is a important element in your lifestyle. I feel that way too. Its not a luxury its part of your culture.
I wish I was retired but my bills keep me working
Hello Scott, I think retirement is a gradual change in one's perspective. No longer chasing the dollar is part of it. No longer living to aquire things. No longer climbing the corporate ladder. Just finding your happy place and nesting is one way. I no longer join everything and have figured out what I need to get along with what satisfy the culture of life I choose. At the end of the day we're all working for health care and not game tickets or jewelry. If you can get health care keep your van running have good coffee and love your simple lifescape you have arrived in your happy place. Your an amazing personality a journalist lyricist film producer and social media icon. I hope you can find retirement by perspective until you can walk away from reporting to a job and report to yourself. ❤
This is my hometown, although it’s got some issues now. It’s the largest city in the North Bay an hour North of the GG 🌉 15 or so mins from cute little wine country towns (Sonoma, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Glen Ellen) lots of sports if you are raising kids, 35 mins from the Pacific, 4 hours from skiing. What people don’t know is that there are neighborhoods, so when you live here you ask people where do you live? Bennett Valley, McDonald area, Rincon Valley, JC, there are a ton of great restaurants. The weather is ah-mazing especially when it’s not the dead of winter.
I can’t wait to get back there. I thought the winter weather was quite mild. And it was great having plenty of solar power all winter. So many great aspects
☕👋🏼... Hope all is well on your next destination.

Welcome to Santa Rosa. Hope you enjoy yourself. Stay safe.
Thanks. I bumped into Linus and Snoopy the other day. Nice little surprise
Ahh don’t be hard on Santa Rosa! That said, Cloverdale just to the north might be more your kinda place - nice downtown and a grocery outlet. Lovely Lake Sonoma to visit too
Thanks for the suggestions. Judging from your comment you must not have watched this video.
I enjoyed this video.
I just now, this morning, stumbled upon your channel, I think your video title caught my eye. I’m born and raised in Santa Rosa. Population when I was born was 20K, now it’s getting close to 200K, that’s probably giving away my age. I’ve never lived anywhere else, but am starting to convert my 2019 transit medium roof van into a no build for travel. I’d like to see more of our beautiful state and country during my golden years. If you have any questions about Santa Rosa just ask me!
Thanks. Sonoma is certainly a great place, I’m really enjoying it here. Best wishes on your travels!
Thanks for sharing you life journey. Stay positive. 😊

As I said, the weather has been ideal for me
We love aroma roasters. it’s been a local favorite for at least 40 years. There’s a little restaurant right across the street Grossman’s. It’s in the hotel right there. It is fantastic.

@@StaticCamperVan nice to know.
We (California) are having an “atmospheric river” storm for the next few days according to the weather news. Lots of rain, flooding, potential for mud slides, road wash outs, and downed trees. It’s been raining for 20+ hours straight in LA and they said we have 6 hrs more to go. App says a lot more to come. Drive carefully or better yet hunker down and stay dry! Good luck with your energy!
It's odd, the weather was much worse last year when I was here. But this year has been very mild and sunny even though the reporting is saying otherwise
What is with this new terminology?
about fine salt, you're right. It happens with people, too. for some reason they are considered fine but if you look at them they are not fine at all. go figure.

Looks like park was called Place to Play. Hope u didn’t need to get water from the bathrooms there- because they are quite disgusting!
Neighborhood wishes the city would maintain them better.. not sure why not.
Sorry you missed Oliver’s Market down street from the park, cuz they have good local coffees and very nice local organic grocery store. Though can be a bit pricey.
Good luck! Happy trails!! 🤸🥔🥕🍓
All the water that I drink goes through a filter so I’m not worried about the source. I checked the prices online for what I needed, which is why I didn’t go to Oliver’s on this particular day. I do like Oliver’s a lot, especially the Windsor location.
