      There's what is left of a tender from a Hudson up at steamtown... it was converted to a steam generator car though.

    Ive been watching Erics reviews for quite a while and I thought he had to have a script or something. I happened to catch him shooting a video on his webcam last night and after watch him shoot the video, I have a new level of respect for the patience and effort he puts into his videos. He truly does a great job! Keep the videos coming Eric!

    The realistic train whistle brought back memories of listening to the trains leaving the marshaling yards at the back of our house when I was about 5 or 6. My brother and I would listen to the steam engines at bed time and it was a rather mournful sound almost as if the engines were lamenting their fate as the diesels made them obsolete.

    Hey Eric, you did not mention the wheel slippage effect. It was not in the manual, but there are at least 2 other TH-camrs that have posted a video on it so I haven't bothered to post one. From a stand still, dial up the throttle a bit, but keep the break leaver all the way down. Slide the break leaver all way up quickly and you will hear the wheel slippage. Your engine will also take off quick, so there is a fine line between the throttle being up too far, and down to low. It takes a little practice, but it is fun.

    I just have to note/find funny. They got so many details right, so many cool features, and somehow. They got the whistle wrong. The Niagara’s did not wear the 6 chimes the Hudson’s and Mohawks wore. They wore Hancock 3 chime long bells similar to that of the UP whistles. Not the make or break feature but still noticeable.

    Great engine and review! Th only thing I would have liked to see is some HEAVY smoke pouring from that stack. Lionel's sounds and detailed look of the vision engines really are incredible, and for a big steam locomotive with big sounds, the thick smoke just completes the package for me.

  • @allegheny48
    @allegheny48 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for an interesting review of another one of my favorite steam locomotives. If I may further enhance your history portion the Niagaras were the next design level after fitting 2 L4b Mohawks (3144 & 3148) with Timken roller bearing rods and enhancing their tenders with a cistern behind the coal slope sheet and a highly modified water scoop for more efficient high speed water pickup. You have the last NYC L4b Mohawk cab no. 3149 in your collection. Even the L4b's had reached their maximum performance and Paul Kiefer's Niagara became the pen ultimate 4-8-4 ever built. Lionel has done a good job replicating the engine though I would prefer to see a less garish silver graphite on the smokebox. Lionel neglected to model the Automatic Train Stop shoe which fastened underneath the rear journal on the tender swing truck on the engineers side. This also resulted in the first overflow pipe being eliminated due to its spray icing up the shoe during wintertime running. The safety pop off valve ( not poppet valve) steam effect is well done as is the whistle steam effect. However, the tender overflow effect just doesn't cut it in my opinion. But, each to their own. Your new Niagara would look great pulling your streamlined Empire State Express passenger train. Thanks again for all your hard work and I am looking forward to your next review.

    Very nice review. I purchased a #6013 and it is spectacular. Eric, a lot of us don’t have a large layout like you, please do another video of this engine running like they did at about 100mph. Although I bought one I cannot do it justice on my small loop of track. In the 50’s these Niagara’s were used on the Empire State express. Maybe you can use your Empire State cars........

    Just saying, the coupler force effect has been around for years in the realm of DCC. Back EMF (Back Electromotive Force) is an automatic function of the decoder to sense how hard the locomotive is working by monitoring the electrical loads on the decoder. Depending on what it senses it will play the appropriate sounds for a locomotive running light, pulling a long heavy train up a steep grade, and everything in-between.

    Having a visual effect to simulate the water scoop picking up water from a water trough is great. But it shouldn't have been done with smoke, it doesn't look realistic and it's too gimmicky that only drives up the price. If anything, Lionel should've put a flickering blue light under the tender to simulate the water scoop effect that way. Smoke lingers and its apparent in this video. Water is more discrete where it sprays then it attaches itself to a solid object.
