The National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola Florida, has an SBD that actually participated in the Battle of Midway. It is the only known surviving Midway warplane in existence, and is considered one of the most historic combat aircraft in the world.

I have seen that one, while in Pensacola. I have pictures of the one hanging from the ceiling in Chicago Midway airport. That's the one that came back with around 200 holes, the result of Japanese fighter attacks and flak. You can easily see where they patched it.

It's a great model, pretty detailed for a toy. I have built the 1/72 Airfix SBD. For a scale modeler this type of model, which comes almost fully assembled, is no fun at all. Merit also manufactures this dive bomber in a traditional assembly kit in 1/18 scale. The youtuber Alex from AlexModeling built it and it's worth watching the video. Nice review. Alex

I agree, but these 1/18 models are special just for existing. Buying this is analogous to buying a lithograph print made by another artist. You can be an artist yourself, but still appreciate a print made by someone else. And limited editions can go up in value and be in demand. I got a dozen of these models when they were originally made because I knew immediately they were undervalued and hard to find. I could easily sell them now for several times what I paid for them.

The Battle of the Philippine Sea (The Marianas Turkey Shoot) in June 1944 proved to be the swansong of the SBD-6, the final version of the long Douglas dive-bomber line. The SBD was a straightforward, reliable, and easy plane for pilots to fly, take off and land on the rolling decks of U.S. Navy fleet carriers.
The SBD, however, was a pre-war design and it was clearly obsolescent, despite the affection of its pilots. The U.S. Navy understandably wanted a newer dive-bomber with more capability: faster, more bomb load, heavier armament, more versatility.
The U.S. Navy found this in the Curtiss SBC-5 Helldiver. The Helldiver was much bigger, heavier, and more difficult to handle and thus never found popularity among its pilots. But the SBC offered a top speed of 290 mph versus 255 mph for the SBD, a big difference when pilots want to fly over a target fast and exit the bomb area even faster when enemy interceptor fighter planes might be in the local skies. The first SBC iteration carried the same maximum bomb load of the SBD. The second Helldiver iteration doubled the bombload by installing bomb racks under the wings. The SBC-5 in 1945 could now carry as heavy a bombload over Japan as did Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy DoLittle's North American B-25 Mitchell medium bombers in 1942.
Yet the SBD dive remains an immortal image in the historic annals of the Pacific War.
