  • In the early 2000's HP released a tablet PC running a touch-optimized version of Windows XP. Surprisingly, 14 years later, it's still a fairly competent computer.

      Yep, once sellers hear about the fact they're cheap they all at once start making the price soo high to the point where they are all no longer cheap and the buyer is forced to pay the hefty price. Now from $15 now it's $115. To even get something close to this, just get a used surface or a cheap Windows x86 tablet that are like $70. Just wait until after I said that. I bet the prices will go as high as $400!

      Could it have been a Fujitsu Lifebook by any chance? Fujitsu made a few Lifebook models that were basically convertible tablet PCs with the functionality of the laptop computer of their time. Mum had one when she worked for the Royal District Nursing Service. It was, basically, a fully feature laptop complete with keyboard, trackpad and even a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, but what set it apart was the rotating screen and active stylus. You could rotate the screen and fold it down on the keyboard, and it became a tablet computer, a rather bulky and heavy one. It ran Windows XP Tablet PC edition.

    2003- Microsoft releases Windows Touch Tablet with 100% functionality of Windows and hardware almost at par with it's time. And let's not talk about comfortable upgradability. No one bats an eye.
    2010- Apple releases iPad. Not even 10% of the standard hardware and with probably the worst possible OS. People lose their minds, want it right now.
    2013- Microsoft releases Surface. Matching industry standard of everything and many more additional features. People claim Microsoft copies from Apple, rate it Bullshit. Want it to go off shelves for being a copy and under par performance.
    P.S: Even the latest iPad has Hardware Specs faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr below the Specs of the first Surface. 🙂🙂🙂

      moral of the story: consumers are stupid

    • @McDonaldsDude
      @McDonaldsDude 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The Windows XP tablet was absolute shit though. The iPad was successful because it could be mass marketed; the Windows XP tablet could not. The XP tablet was bulky, had crap battery life, used a real OS and not a touch OS, used a stylus, and was expensive as fuck ($2000+!!!). Also, wireless internet wasn't as mainstream as it is now.
      The iPad fixed all that. It was thin, had great battery life, used a touch OS, used fingers instead of a stylus, and was reasonably priced ($500 for base model). Also, it had WiFi included but with an option of 3G networks.
      Microsoft envisioned the XP Tablet as a PC replacement; Apple envisioned the iPad as something between a smartphone and laptop - a netbook killer. Unfortunately for Microsoft they realized this too late and Windows 8 was a massive failure. By then Android had taken over anyway.

    • @nikhilpaleti3872
      @nikhilpaleti3872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tarman Yeah! Man you're right!!!
      In 2003, the era till when touch based devices were just a fictional thing, people could gauge the fact that it has a Touch Based OS or not, long battery life or not and all!
      Now addressing the issues of the Windows tablet you mentioned.
      Thickness you say? Damn! This was 20mm thick in 2003 whole the original iPad was 14.5 mm thick. Yes, according to today's standards, the iPad is a lot slimmer, but from 2003's Point of View, for a device that was innovating something, the TC 1100 was not a big difference from the iPad, and you also had the ability to dock it and what not which iPad has thought of just last year!
      Battery life, you comparing this to today's standards man? iPads are battery focussed devices if you ask me. Most iPads have a 5000+mAh Battery while they have Sub-Par performance apart from that. So not fair comparing the two though, but still, if it got support like how iPad did, Windows Tab could get miles ahead of anyone.
      Apple didn't envision the iPad as a PC Killer because it was crap! Honestly even the latest iPad will struggle to compete with the oldest of Windows or even Mac PCs!
      And why can't the TC1100 actually be a PC Killer? If Apple sold this same thing, people would lose their minds. This has a battery life (which no PC has/had), had on par power(Processor, Storage, RAM etc.)

    • @nikhilpaleti3872
      @nikhilpaleti3872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tarman And according to you, the iPad was a winner amongst the two and not a shit given that iPad came 6 Years later. So if clearly only the good device has to win, why didn't that Windows Tablets of 2013 go past iPads?
      Because Apple has BootLickers!
      Surface is a clearly better device than any iPad ever. Much sharper displays, improving power and battery life with every new release, much more powerful GPUs, a full-functional touch supported OS that has your back always!

    • @McDonaldsDude
      @McDonaldsDude 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You pretty much explained why Windows XP tablet failed: it wanted to replace the PC, when in fact a tablet SHOULDN'T be a PC killer. A lot of software on the XP Tablet didn't run well because a mouse and keyboard were preferable for many of the apps such as Office, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Cubase, etc. etc.
      A Tablet shouldn't be a PC killer because people would just prefer to use the PC. Thats what Apple realized and designed the iPad that way.
      The XP Tablet was dead because it was the wrong produt at the wrong time. The iPad was the perfect product at the perfect time.

      If you really are that short on money, get this I guess, but I'd get a wacom intuos draw in a small size for around 70-80 dollars. Works just as good as any other tablet. I'd see that as MUCH better than this, despite the pen sensitivity. I really doubt something like this was made for art alone, so this is something I'd consider. You can still make some great art if you use this tablet, but it's definitely not making things easier for you.

Used to pull it out at meetings and take my notes with the pen on the 'paper' app. Being able to detach the keyboard made it really light for carrying around. One of the problems with it was that the display was subject to strain where it was attached to the computer. This made the solder joints break and the display would eventually fail. :-( Pity, but it is probably the most favourite machine I've owned.

    Great video, really enjoyed it! That tablet still looks good to me. It was positively space aged when it first appeared. All the work Microsoft engineers put into that. It really should not have been possible at that time but they pulled it off. A real milestone but it was so expensive and really just too early considering the size of all the parts. I remember hearing that Bill Gates would never be without his, he carried it everywhere under his arm.
    This is typical of Microsoft, not the Windows team. I mean the R&D engineers that live underground and never see the light of day. They just present ideas to Microsoft heads, if the idea is approved, off they go and just make it. Microsoft has the biggest R&D budget of any company on the planet and it rarely lets anything it makes become a real product. I mean one that is supported and iterated on. The tablet was dropped and wasn't picked up again until Apple came out with theirs and made it look like they'd pioneered the whole thing.
    I do have a soft spot for Microsoft, or at least parts of it. It's such a huge company. The unsung engineers that are making amazing things like a completely new way to display fonts because they look ugly on fancy new LCD monitors. No one else was doing that. And today we all benefit from that work. Millions spent developing a font rendering engine that made Microsoft exactly $0. Look at Hololens, the original Surface (the big ass table) I could go on but maybe that's a topic for a video, not an overly long youtube comment.

    We had one of those in my school when I was younger. You paid a massive premium for it being so small and it was still incredibly weak as a computer. The input device was retarded and most of the time you'd run it connected to a keyboard like a laptop anyway. I honestly can't think of a single use for that tablet which wouldn't suit a laptop or one of the tablets of the day running PalmOS or Windows 2000 better. Perhaps as a portable DVD player with very, very mild computer capability but for something which I remember as priced in the thousands it seems a very slim market when portable DVD players could be had under a hundred pounds/dollars and a very good one at 200.
    Nothing about this device was all to exceptional except for its price point. Whilst yes it was configured to pop out the on-screen keyboard when it would be needed everything used was already built into normal Windows XP devices of the day and left turned off. Without any installations or external software you could have handwriting recognition, voice recognition, and the on-screen keyboard set up the exact way this computer had. I personally found the handwriting recognition sucked and it almost never managed to pick up a word of mine, the device wasn't powerful enough to manage voice recognition properly, and the on screen tap keyboard was the only input it could manage.
    Let us also remember that tablets were already commonplace, though only really in a business usage and never as a home system. From an exec using Palm to review spreadsheets data and general organisation to the delivery drivers and warehouse workers using a tablet with the same form factor and a cell phone connectivity to help automate organisation of a warehouse or second to second updates on a delivery. They were usually priced very low with weak processor capability which wouldn't handle the internet or movies (hence not being popular as a home device) and usually ran either custom software or the previous windows. They would be similar to a current low end tablet today with custom tablet software (android rather than windows 8).
    Nothing about this device was revolutionary beyond the idea "lets make something already produced at 10 times the cost and a similar performance leap". I found it a disgusting waste of money for my school, especially since nobody even saw it after the first 2-3 days post-purchase. I can't think of any use for it and that is very much reflected in the fact that it didn't take off in any sector of the market. Drawing, perhaps. I daresay that the premium for drawing seems a little excessive considering there was already the possibility of wacom tablets and touch screens. Had there been similar internet to today it might have the same function as current tablets with 10 times the price tag but that wasn't the world those days.
    Also, I had never seen an e-book in those days and pdf files are still easy to annotate using acrobat anyway so you really don't save time in handwriting over typing except that copy/paste and the like won't function with a handwritten note. For $15 sure send it to Africa to aid with education but that only really works now the internet has expanded and because its price is so low. For western education you would do far, far better with a modern tablet able to deal with the more recent office versions and which can manage HTML5 without issue, even if it does cost +2x the price.

    I owned 2 of these back in the day. Used it as an e-reader and document editor before either concept were being as mass marketed as they are now. One of the greatest investments I ever made in tech way back then. To be honest, I still prefer the bulky feel of tablets and still would rather have middle of the road performance with a great display, mass storage options and excessive battery life. Not a fan of this slimmed down design being touted as the greatest when really all they do is carry over the heat problems into the next generation of computing rather than maintaining an identical form factor and upgrading the cooling system. I also had a Sony UX280 for a bit. Another device worth checking out for sure. If you want to go further back then look into (ultra)widescreen computers literally designed for the internet and email when it all became mainstream. It's interesting because we are actually going back to these older designs now but nobody is really aware of it due to the premium these devices carried early on. A lot of great innovative history in computer technology if you only look.

It could do basic gaming like Doom and Halo 1 and GTA III. Excellent keyboard, full array of ports, ethernet, phone jack, PCMCIA, docking station support. It had a shit proprietary 4200 RPM hard drive that died as soon as I got it, it was replaced under warranty with an SSD, thank you IBM! It ran XP pretty good, I later installed Windows 7 on it, that ran okay once you fiddle with drivers to get buttons to work, better handwriting recognition than XP. No graphics driver but could still play TH-cam videos, at least the last time I used it, which was at least five years ago.

    I remember seeing those back when they came out and I thought they were amazing, but I think their cost was in the $1100 range, which was way too rich for my blood back then. Tablet PCs back then never really sold in huge numbers, mainly being relegated to niche applications like the medical field and warehouse data entry and product scanning. Putting pen input on a desktop OS doesn't produce something that's really all that elegant, which is a main reason they didn't sell well; that HP probably did better because of its dockable keyboard. That situation actually repeats itself with Windows 10; Windows 8 was great for touchscreens once you got used to how it worked but Windows 10 takes a step backwards and is hard to use with a touchscreen without a stylus. My Lenovo tablet has a beautiful Full HD touchscreen and came with Windows 8 but got 'upgraded' to 10 and now I'm glad it came with a keyboard and touchpad (that attaches to it magnetically and connects via Bluetooth) because the touchscreen is pretty much unusable now.

The weight is the cost I am willing to take. Even if the GPU can't be swapped, I guess you can just have integrated graphics on a new CPU and just not use the dedicated old GPU. Can't find it cheap as you did tho, guess the video was too successful hahah.

    For years I drooled at the notion of having a TC1100, but it was too expensive at the time. A few years later, I got to own a close relative, and descendant of this venerable HP tablet, the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5112. Not only does it have a dual-core Core 2 Duo, and a 12.1" 16:9 screen, it had an option for a transflective LCD (which mine had) like the PDAs of the early 2000s that allowed the screen to be visible in direct sunlight even with the brightness set to minimum. The other feature unique to the Stylistic was that it had a hot swappable battery. It had a small internal battery that could keep the system powered for 10-15 minutes in standby while the main battery was being swapped. Had it not been for the weak Intel integrated graphics, I'd still have kept it.
