20 years ago I was a Gateway tech and worked on dozens of Profiles. The first were little more than a laptop on a stick with a separate keyboard. I still liked them.
One other odd note about the Profile 6 - it has an internal power supply, but not all of the power supply is actually in the enclosure. The unit itself only makes 12v and connects to the motherboard via a proprietary 10-pin connector. Then, there's more voltage conversion to create the 5v and 3.3v rails ON THE MOTHERBOARD, and a connector comes out of the motherboard to provide the molex and SATA connectors. Such a weird setup but it allowed them to have a very compact, enclosed PSU. That also means that, if you hacked off the connector, you could probably run the Profile 6, and the Profile 5.5 for that matter, off of a car battery.

3:23 - the white socket in the bottom right corner? That's a miniPCI wlan socket. You might have to add two antennas for it. But with all those holes and all that space on the black plastic, that should be easy. TL-WN861N would be a good fit for that socket.
There was a card slot inside where you can actually add a wifi card instead of using a USB adapter. I drill holes on the silver circles on either side of the case and attached two antennas to it. Those were the days.
Honestly that thing looks fine. Certainly slicker than (but not as cool as) the Ipex AllStationX systems that were popular here in Australia in schools and such around the same time that this computer was current. It was a "modular" AIO where you would install your own monitor on the inbuilt VESA mount, it used a standard mATX motherboard, desktop drives and you could even add video cards and such if you were daring. It didn't take up much more space (about an inch and change deeper) than this Profile and was half the starting price including a monitor.
2:00 "Non standard plug". That plug is an ATX 6-pin connector available on every regular computer power supply in store. The big problem is that you need to short two pins to start the power supply though
Yeah but a regular power supply only gives 12 Volts to the 6-pin ATX, the pc needs a lot more than 12 volts to run, so there's power supplies specifically made for this that only have one ATX 6-pin but it's 250V or 120V
No way that this powersupply outputs 120volts or 250volts. 12 Volts is actually already way to high for modern semiconductors and inside notebooks, desktops, the power gets down converted to much lower voltages. For example my i7 desktop computer processor runs under full load at only 1.06 volts and only on 0.768 volt in idle.
if you're willing to reopen the computer again, check the ribbon cable feeding to the monitor, that line of dead pixels will be magically fixed, it's normally a loose cable.
2:03 thats not an unstandard plug, but you will never see it externally available to the user, look on any modern gpu, mother board, powersupply, or most components, and you'll find one
I saw one of these recently in a retable cabin in Colorado. It was set-up for internet explorer only and most websites were blocked. It had a sticky note on it with *EMAIL PORTAL* written on it.
This guys is very good, he speaks at a rate that's pleasing, explains things once instead of over repeating like some do, got straight to the point without going off on side stories, didn't speak in a monotone (thank god) when people do that slow and all in one pitch (Yawn!!) it's also really really annoying lol... and he knows direct is best, no over complicating the story, points or explanations! Direct simple explanations are best.... always lol.. Thank you for a great video, REALLY enjoyed this! PS never heard of that song, though that actually just sounded like Band on the run by macartney!
I used to have a profile 6. It was a good computer for back in the day. Personally, I loved the way it looked. Also, the profile 6 was a much better design than the 5 in my opinion, it used desktop parts instead of laptop parts which made it bigger but much easier to work on and upgrade. You could put it a full sized graphics card if you wanted to as it had a pcie slot with two openings in the back. It was really cool the way they fit it all in there. I loved that thing and I would probably still use it today if I had a way of upgrading the CPU. It used a standard desktop CPU, mine had a core 2 duo in it, but I used a specially designed motherboard.
I have a Profile 6 that we use in our lab/work area(namely for coding and programming our MCU and FPGA logic), pretty neat little machine but I personally can't wait to replace it with a smaller laptop or something that uses less space on our benches.
The mentioning of the 12 dollar price tag made me think about that big brain theme where you wait 12 years to get a game cheaper but this time this really is saving some serious cash lol
The PC I'm currently using can't handle HD videos either, so I didn't notice the dead pixels lol. I did notice them during the BIOS screen, but assumed it was my imagination.
Stone did it better in 05 I think. Their machines look like direct copies almost, but the stone ones are more boxy, and more "raw". Inside there is just a atx motherboard, and to connect to the monitor is a VGA cable that comes around all on the inside of the case. It makes it actually possible to upgrade the GPU (with a PCI riser card). Plus it also has the newer chip set too, so core2 CPUs are supported!
It is actually pretty neat and nice. Definitely not ugly. BTW, after your video I'm really thinking on buying one just to get the case and fit a modern build inside it. And that floppy / DVD tray arrangement is just lit!

@@bonnome2 oh shit I'm sorry but I am so wrong, I donno what I was on (probably weed) lmao
Wow, this brings back so many memories from middle school. It was amazing at the time!
Those Gateway Profile designs are so 2000's I really want one
So you’re telling me that education would get $2000 computers but today they can’t afford $200 computers?
I appreciate that Everyday Chemistry shoutout. The Beatles Never Broke Up is one of my favorite little internet oddities.
You had my hopes up with that QR code at the end... did not disappoint. Lol
realy enjoyed this one.. thanks again ! (ive watched a lot of your stuff)
The profiles Power Port just looks like something i would plug a power supply cable into
if you're willing to reopen the computer again, check the ribbon cable feeding to the monitor, that line of dead pixels will be magically fixed, it's normally a loose cable.
Did anyone else notice that the Gateway logo at 0:26 is the "Tomeato" from the Dilbert episode "Hunger"?
2:03 thats not an unstandard plug, but you will never see it externally available to the user, look on any modern gpu, mother board, powersupply, or most components, and you'll find one
4:37 I have that same logo thing on my PC that I am writing this on! (The logo thing in the bottom left of the screen)
I dont know but the design of that computer is pretty cool for me
I love it 😊😊😊
I saw one of these recently in a retable cabin in Colorado. It was set-up for internet explorer only and most websites were blocked. It had a sticky note on it with *EMAIL PORTAL* written on it.
That's actually a really cool computer. I like it!
In this day and age, if it ain't an SSD, or even an SSHD, it's not an hard drive upgrade
Thanks for the "Bad Ben" episode of computers.. Don't upgrade it, bury it!!
Linda T that’s actually a mix called Everyday Chemistry, it combines some of the most famous songs by the Beatles as solo artists into one.
I didn't even know, even less expect, someone else but me knows Hamsterball - very satisfying to know I was wrong
I love these late nineties, early to mid 2000s computers. My fave PC era. Athlon forever!!!!
Sometimes you can massage the bezel around where the dead LCD column is and get it to come back on.
I'm so over 2010's designs, they re so simplistic and all brands look basically same.
Honestly. That's probably the best looking 2000 PC I've ever seen. Aside of iMac for sure.
The Windows XP OOBE theme promises a future we never saw...
That Literally Brings Back The Old Looks Of Computers (The PC Is On The Bottom Of The Monitor)
It is actually pretty neat and nice. Definitely not ugly. BTW, after your video I'm really thinking on buying one just to get the case and fit a modern build inside it. And that floppy / DVD tray arrangement is just lit!
surprised by the fact he got it for $12 on ebay
i could only find a handful of listings for this pc on ebay, and all of them were worth over a hundred dollars in total! you’re so lucky!!!
