    One of the most useful DIY videos I have seen. Only things different I would have done is overlapped the contact paper, glued the boards onto that using panel adhesive, painted the contact paper once it was up and painted the wood boards before they got installed.

      To paint contact paper, would you prime?

    • @mulliganstew72

      Yes. In the end when she pulls that off I think the paint’s gonna chip off with it but… that’s an easy fix. It looks great !

      If I were your landlord, I would cry because this wasn’t permanent. I can’t imagine anyone not thinking this was an upgrade. 😂 this is outstanding, and I’m sure your renters that are watching our measuring as we speak. I’m going to ask my husband, who is a landlord for office spaces and ask him what he thinks. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Great idea! This came out awesome. I think one tip I would do is probably paint all the wood first. I would paint the wall paper once on the wall before I added the strips and then attach the wood, caulk and then do paint touch ups where needed. This way you could have lower risk of getting the paint on the wall or baseboard. But great idea. You could sell this as a kit!

    Great job Alli! I never would have thought to do this, although I am a big fan of Contac paper. I've covered the tops of play tables for my kids when they were little, and I used it for a kitchrn back splash in my first apartment back in the day. My (ex) husband was in the service and it was off-base housing and we couldn't paint or tile. Both projects turned out great, but certainly weren't as labor-intensive as yours! I would love to see more projects like this one!

  • @Melozia1
    @Melozia1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is a great idea, but how do you *remove* it? After all, to remove a command strip, you have ro pull down on its tab. After hot gluing the board to the tab, won't the tab rip.off the wall when you pull the board off? Am I missing something?

    • @ActuallyAlli
      @ActuallyAlli  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My thoughts for removing will be to use a craft knife carefully to cut the caulk and separate the boards from the wallpaper. Then I used the "velcro" Command Strips that work in 2 pieces, so I will be able to separate strip glued to the boards from the strip attached to the wall. I plan to make a video removing it when it's time for me to move out!

  • @sunshine21911
    @sunshine21911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you also just fully line that section of the wall with the contact paper and then glue the boards to the contact papered wall instead of using the command strips? I will definitely be trying this project at my new rental! Hopefully I can master the art of contact papering lol. It turned out great.

  • @pamm2230
    @pamm2230 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Instead of removable contact paper another option is plain wallpaper put on with cornstarch which is easily removed without residue. Good quality wallpaper can be painted. As others have said I would paint all wallpaper and boards first before installation, then simply due any necessary touch-ups.

    • @ActuallyAlli
      @ActuallyAlli  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love that idea, it definitely is worth trying

  • @hereforthevideoessays6399
    @hereforthevideoessays6399 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question: can I do this but with an existing chair rail (which I can't paint) as the top board of this DIY? The challenge there would be that I can't caulk or paint along the chair rail. TIA for any tips!

    • @ActuallyAlli
      @ActuallyAlli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I definitely think this could be done with an existing chair rail! I didn't do anything to change the trim along the floor at my apartment and since I used pretty thin boards, the gap/difference is so minimal, so it would be the same with the chair rail. You'd maybe only notice if you look up close, but from a distance, it'd look fine. As far as painting goes, you could either paint to match the chair rail, or pick whatever color you want & have the chair rail as an accent

    My question is how do you remove the command strips from the wall without ripping or marking on the landlord original wallpaint when you move out of that apartment?

    And do you think the command strips will remove without tearing out your drywall? My experience is that they can ruin drywall.

    They usually have that contact paper at the Dollar Tree. I suspect if you're already doing refinishing projects it wouldn't cut into your budget that much. You'd already have the Zinsser and a small sample jar of paint should be sufficient. Watch for a sale on the trim. The only real expense is the Command Strips.

    Is it easy to peel off the contact paper? Isn’t contact paper super sticky-would it rip existing paint once taking off?
