Happy or sad. Angry or depressed. Energetic or calm. This song works for me no matter what mood I'm in. And it always makes me joyful and unable to give a shit.
It’s wild that TH-cam just recommended me this video while I was thinking about how I couldn’t tell if I was happy or angry or ready for what’s next. Hope you’re still jamming.
My intro to SYL. This and Meshuggah introduced me to a more layered, heavier, intense style of metal a good twenty years ago. Still the best of its kind. I miss Devin’s chaotic side.
@Dave Levensworth S.C.I.E.N.C.E. came out in '97. I didn't include Symbolic because it's another genre. Those three I cited are pretty much related, genre-wise
This and “In the Rainy Season“ are simply the most mind blowing opening for a metal album I ever heard in the 90s: fast, chaotic, brutal, but also melodic, epic and intimate at the same time. The rest of the album is at a demo level, but these two songs are enormous.
I'm not a fan of his solo stuff, but I can appreciate it for what it is. He is a very talented individual and quite possibly a musical genius as far as creativity, patience and self discipline is concerned.
this song carried me through my teens and it's still an all time favourite. I like Dev's new stuff, but the old SYL is what I have always felt the most
I am so fortunate to say that I video taped this off MTV's Headbangers ball back in the 90's. This was my teenage soundtrack! That makes me a music GOD now a days ! hahahahah
I love the fact that this song are incredibly heavy but still keep the ryth and the melody, witout only screaming and/or burping incomprensibly words. SYL best metal band ever !
I'm honestly shocked this doesn't have millions of views so pure raw and honest anger and hostility but then again "Normal People." can't handle this real shit.
No joke, and devin is a fucking genius very underrated, was fortunate enough to see him and meet him with strapping young lad at ozzfest before they disbanded, fucking amazing show.
You are so right about normies cant handle this real shit. I play this for metalheads and even some of them just can't take it. almost everyone I play it for just thinks it's way to intense. I love it's brutal honesty and think it's hands down the best use of the F word in a song anywhere.
Gotta throw it out there, I fucking love Devy's mannerisms in this video, they're hysterical, I love all the wild gesturing and arm waving he does, I wanna be like that!
I love this song!! I love how angry and raw they sounded back then... And the video is seriously awesome! I like the "This is an important shot of Jed" part lol
this is for what I am started to listened SYL!!!Greetings from Russia!!!;-))) Ofcouse, at first it was an album "Soul Of a new machine" By "Fear Factory"(1992) One of the great heavy metal industrial albums!.All are these guys I have listened almost at the same time, but more prefer Devin Townsend and his projects later, couse,as for me,he is more talented as well!
You're lucky. The girl I broke up with in high school was in charge of the year book - she purposely changed what I said in the yearbook under my face to something self inflicting :(
The Devin I grew up with. Blasting this gem throughout my teen years. I remember someone said to me around 1999 check out Slipknot it's aggressive. I listened and I laughed my ass of.
This is the kinda shit that kept metal relevant during this time period...Pantera solidified the state of metal and bands like SYL, Fear Factory and Messhugga kept the rawness obvious and wasn't prone to the overproduction and industrialization that gave way to nu metal in the years to come.
It's weird thinking about this young, snarling, bowl cut lunatic growing up to be a goofy, bald alien father who makes beautiful melodic music but then again this song ends with "Can I take your stinkin' order" so I guess he always had a silly side. Also he still makes heavy stuff with some harsh vocals. Just... never this unbelievably heavy anymore. This band was... something else.
Quickly became one of my more favorite bands recently. And yea, his other stuff like Devin Townsend Project is still great but SYL was a whole different beast. Nice to see some recent comments. This album is also very underrated imo, but I can understand some of the dislike towards it. City is still my favorite album though :). This album has alot of silliness going on but also unfiltered rage.
I'll never forget, mid 90s, seeing this video on MTV Latino (!) Headbangers Ball... and it blowing my mind... And now I've seen the man half a dozen times, got the albums, the shirts, the Ziltoid puppet, almost 30 years of being a fan of the Hevy One.
That's what I guessed immediately. Just got into SYL a few months ago...makes sense to me, especially since he probably saw a bear in his backyard (I live in Victoria, across the water from Vancouver) as a boy!
2022 and I just heard Call of the Wild. Had to come back and relive my childhood. I just remember this was a track that was played non stop cus that chorus was dedicated to some forgotten ex-girlfriend. Devin still going strong and putting out music that touches your inner soul!
I **chug chug** your fucking **chug chug** And I **chug chug** your fucking **chug chug** That's what my mind sings back whenever this song is stuck in my head.
Awesome. The video is actually for the song SYL from the album Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing. One for the music videos that was not included on the For Those Aboot To Rock DVD from some reason. Either Devin forgot about it or just didn't want it to ever see the light of day. Anyway, awesome video. Hail Strapping Young Lad.
I still love Devy in all his manifestations, but man I do miss the rage days.... back when he could scream without risking an aneurysm. This song, message or music, just wouldn't be the same without the rage.
this is fucking DEVIN TOWNSEND BEST CLIP EVER!!!From it I began to listen Death-Industrial-Heavy Metall till this time !!!I I am 44 right now!!!Greetings from Russia to all H&M fans!!!
SYL = Strapping Young Lad, nothing more. The album was made almost 10 years after he performed with Vai, and Vai also performed a solo on Devin's 2006 album Synchestra. Townsend simply wasn't happy about his time with Vai because he was worried that people would simply remember him as "Vai's singer".
As heavy things go,it is most definitely a really heavy thing! Back in 1995, I almost got a hernia trying to pick it up for the 1st time.I didn't try to do that again! Since then,I've just had to leave it where it was sitting and enjoy it where it sat!
Howdy! welcome to A.E.W., Sounds like the shortened name of "All Elite Wrestling" promotion. And this album released *24 years before* the creation of the company. Devin might really came from the new age.
Man once said to me, "Boy, you like Fear Factory"? And I hesitated, I then looked upon him and said "Yes". He spoke; "But have you heard SYL, boy?". And I had not. Then I knew that I was incomplete. So I heard SYL, and then the bottom of the basket gave away, and I saw the things that were.
People keep saying stuff about his 90s bull cut lol, but I mean he was obviously just growing it out. He had a shaved head in Steve Vai a couple years before this. It's got to go through these awkward stages first.
The intro rotating shot when they're posing is fucking genius. Devin is a madman in the most glorious way
I like how his top has his name on it, like all great Canadians
wait until all the vocal coaches reacting to Kingdom discover the SYL era Devy
Gene H.
@@kuntymckunterson But Gene wasn't on this album. Chris Byes on drums.
I miss this Devin

1995: came out this, Demanufacture and Destroy Erase Improve.
What a fantastic year!
And Death- Symbolic
@Dave Levensworth S.C.I.E.N.C.E. came out in '97.
I didn't include Symbolic because it's another genre. Those three I cited are pretty much related, genre-wise
Not to mention Disco Volante...
Incubus, Meshuggah, syl fans you guys mid 30s?

yeah they're ludicrous
so fucking underrated it's unbelievable.
Thank fuck someone knows what they have, they are absolutely fucking brilliant.
not under rated,.. simply under heard... for anypne that hears this, is changed forever.
Fucking game changer in music when this came out in '95. New level of sickness and very delicate same fucking time. Holy fuck!
The editing in this video is phenomenal for 1994-1995 era! Been listening to this song, and album, since I was in my early teens! Never gets old!
This man has no limits to his creativity and ability. I would say that about very few.
I'm not a fan of his solo stuff, but I can appreciate it for what it is. He is a very talented individual and quite possibly a musical genius as far as creativity, patience and self discipline is concerned.

"I am a coming of a new age" He's right about that. A new age of music from him in future releases.
I am so fortunate to say that I video taped this off MTV's Headbangers ball back in the 90's. This was my teenage soundtrack! That makes me a music GOD now a days ! hahahahah
This and Fear Factory, nothing else ever got over it... or have i missed something?
love how devin is just not holding back and is just going crazy through the entire video
Devin Townsend writes the best choruses ever, hands down.
fact...all strapping young lad songs must be played at full volume
Ben Roy the amount of times I've lay down and put my headphones on full volume just to appreciate this genius...
i miss those loud abrasive shows!!
Absolutely!!
I love the fact that this song are incredibly heavy but still keep the ryth and the melody, witout only screaming and/or burping incomprensibly words.
SYL best metal band ever !
"THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SHOT OF JED" got me good

Detox video has over a million views
I finally read the lyrics to this after 20 years and I now know what this song is about. It's pumping some new life into me.
Jeez, I guess I'll just be one of the few people appreciating the hell out of this bad-ass song without talking about Devin's hair or how he looks.
Gotta throw it out there, I fucking love Devy's mannerisms in this video, they're hysterical, I love all the wild gesturing and arm waving he does, I wanna be like that!
I remember seeing this video on Noisy Mothers and being totally blown away. Nothing else quite like it.
The staccato string section in the choruses is beyond epic.
This song needs to be re-recorded ASAP!
2:56
Probably the most important shot in this entire video.
Just bring back all these video values man. You can't express metal in 4K.
imagine being a kid in 95, the world is against you but you have a walkman and blast this in your head. 🤘 best feeling in the world
Man I love this shit! Devin Townsend is such a beast! I dont know he disliked Heavy as a Heavy Thing, it had some of his best songs!
I love the melodic part at around 2:12, they always manage to be melodic but still really heavy
This is a important shot of JED. Best shot ever.
Devin looks like an adult playing a teenager in an 80s movie.
I always thought he looked sort of like Willem Dafoe, at least before he went bald.
just discovered this amazing band. so happy. :P
This album doesn't get the respect it deserves, the first two songs are two of the best SYL songs
I love this song!! I love how angry and raw they sounded back then... And the video is seriously awesome! I like the "This is an important shot of Jed" part lol
Weird seeing A backstreet boys hairstyle on our father
Sliaom
it was the 90s lmao...skullet came soon after

I managed to get lyrics from this song placed in our school year book.
***** Of course it was only the chorus, the meaningful part is just implied.

Yeah same. But someone showed me Korn around the same time and then slipknot and said “these guys make SYL sound like Enya” whatever the f he meant
I really miss that times, i was like 13-14 years old, and i was blasting this song at max volume... Yep, I miss that times
If I start a new band I will call our first album "Heavy and Hard Rhino Turd" as a tribute to SYL. Hall of Fame band they are!
For all his uplifting modern stuff, this still makes me feel better than any of it

Heard about this song on the SYL episode of the Heavy with Andrew and Don. It’s even better with the video
God damn this thing deserves a full re-production.. video remaster, music channel strip, remix/substitution/ remaster.. it's fantastic
This song goes out to every other driver out there.

It's funny because he was the coming of the best age of metal.
geezus they were far ahead their time. insanely raw and pure
I adore this song, but completely understand if he never plays it live again. This is an angry place to let your mind go.
why is that such a bad thing
this is soo much heavier than all that deathcore crap we have nowadays. and i love how dev looks like one of the backstreet boys :D
such an amazing scream and clean voice

I figured so. He is quite the musical genius.
