Yeah, it's always sad to see musicians who look at their instrument for an excuse as to why they can't play a certain thing, like: "My pedals are shit, thats why i am not fast enough. I need this 900 Dollar Trick-Pedal" or "my fretboard isn't slim enough, that's why I can't play this - with a better guitar i would totally be able to play this". Sure, there is a limiting factor in the grade of your instrument. But you can always even out a crappy instrument/crappy hardware with good technique. That's why a good musician can make a 100 Dollar guitar sound awesome and a good drummer can show you his speedy double-bass fill on a 50 Dollar pedal.
You completely hit the nail on the head, dude! Exactly what I was talking about. It's always the gear's fault on why they can't play something. I've been hearing these excuses since 6th grade, as I'm sure we all have. Haha. Everyone is always worried about upgrades instead of getting better.
I mean, if you really hit a wall and can't progress because your crappy pedal would not allow you to go beyond a certain point - go ahead and buy yourself a new, better pedal. But at least try to go as far as possible with the gear you have. Most of the time you struggle it's not the gear - it's you. To be aware of this can save you a ton of money.

@@jeremycubs8331 I love Lars, but pretty sure double bass was invented back in the jazz days.
I see a lot of comments regarding Gene, making it look easy. Well, for him, it is easy; he's been playing for many years. Repetition is key!
We need Gene and Dev back together 🤭 miss SYL 🥺
They did on Devin's Crappy Hallowen
Gene, you rule! So powerful, intense and emotional drumming. One of the greatest metal drummers ever.
It's not only tight, but extremely musical. I could just listen to the drum tracks off the album and be just fine.
Gene is just perfection. You just watch him play and you know everything is exactly as it has to be, and it's so satisfying.
Fuck is this brilliant...my favorite SYL song (of many greats...)...thanks for sharing Gene! And, yes, as someone else said...amazing to hear a different mix of the guitars. You're a fucking legend, sir. Carry on.
It's always fun watching you play Gene because you make it look sooooo damn easy!!! 😅
This song grooves so hard.
f...g cardio!! never seen anything like that, super super high level performance and his precision is just impeccable
Goddamn that was amazing!
Your technique is immaculate. I cannot imagine playing in that footware!
Those double-bass triplets under the “reggatón” ostinato is …”tasty”😁
Kickass song too! I love everything about this, so much.
What an amazing player, so fluid...
Ever since I heard Gene Hoglan play on Individual thought patterns when I was 14, i'm a fan of his style. It doesn't get more funky in Metal than with Gene Hoglan.
Man this song sounds completely different without vox or ambient noises.
Sounds better without the noises
Well, isn't that wrong.
I miss the SYL. I never got a chance to see them live.
He makes it seem so effortless!
I watched him play in the rainy season on twitch it was awesome
2 weeks later: I watched him play skeksis live on twitch
Why do several shots, particularly the bass drums, not match the audio???
Not one take!. Edited and mixed with replayed "dropins".
Gene, The Man.... So brutally groovy
Seen him with Dark Angel live wow what a show ..in the 80`s
I love how he seems to go into a zen state when he plays.
Considering the savagely heavy manner in which Gene plays the drum part for this maniacal and raging song, he looks pretty happy.
I love how Gene gets so much by doing so little.
It looks so cool and relaxed when Gene Hoglan plays his drums that he could almost perform it in his sleep. There's no one better better him.
Such an underrated song, love it!🤘🔥🤘
Gene monster Metal drumer god bless you..
my only complaint is that my phone won't turn up any louder!
Chris L ...
download a sound booster app, but don't blame me when your speakers explode from a brutal metal overdose 😊
Hearing this on a phone speaker? Good riddance.
Maybe the most satisfying drum playthrough ever. Damn.
To those who gave this a thumbs down: I have a very particular set of skills....skills acquired over a long career....
drumrnva
lol
Hahaha!
Skills that only the jealous give thumbs down for.
I'm guessing the downvotes are from people that are upset he's not drumming in combat boots anymore, because the drums are on-point, as always.
@@jasonvincion I thought they were Doc Martens... Jesus, am I picking nits or what? 😦
Amazing on multiple levels. How can you not love that?
Doug Steele being a moron, thats the only way to not love
Love that he can use any pedals in world, but he chooses the old school CAMCO pedals :) I wonder if those are original, or the re-issue TAMA did a while back???
My understanding is that they're the "old school" Camco pedals. I remember reading an interview with Gene where he mentions this, and went on to say that his sister had recently bought him a bunch of old Camco pedals (some whole, some missing parts) - as many as she could find and buy.
Clint Clark Lotta old school dudes love those things. I need to get one myself.
Wayn Ledbetter yup, you can tell they're the old ones as they have that full 360 sprocket cam, the next gen Camco's had the half sprocket cam design. I've got a set of both in my collection 😎
i love the guitar sound from alien. its the heaviest single tone in metal iv ever heard. it feels like something is imploding!
5:02, listen REALLY carefully with headphones. You can actually hear vocals.. Might be easier to hear them at 5:45.
@Davide Bonvicini thats was not my point.
Not only is the sound of his drumming amazing, Gene is fun to watch as well.
well this video just made my night.
