I never knew about Strapping Young Lad until watching a long interview with Gene Hoglan that he did shortly after joining Fear Factory. Funny thing is, I knew who Devin Townsend was, and I loved his DTP and DT bands, but my dumb ass never knew that he was the founder of SYL. Being a fan of Dethklok, and of Gene in general and everything that he does, this interview that he did, he introduced me to a few projects that he was part of that I never knew about. It was that interview where he mentioned, that out of all of the bands that he has had the honor to be a part of, his favorite band to perform with was Strapping Young Lad. He also stated, that if Strapping Young Lad ever wanted to play again and tour, he would drop everything that he was doing just to play with them again. That is when I was introduced to SYL, and I am glad that I was, cause this entire band is bad ass. From the lyrics, to the entire structure of their songs and how well written every piece is, this band was a well done piece of art. How I never knew about them for all of these years, leaves me baffled. After listening to some of their songs, I went out and bought all 4 albums. City, Alien and The New Black are my 3 favorite albums. Each album has it's own forte.

- DEVIN TOWNSEND
- Kicks all of the previous stuff!
+Skinny Puppy and Frontline Assembly(Devin assisted FLA with their album Millenium).
Don't forget Nickleback for the bad!
The Birthday Massacre!Very good :)
Strapping Young Lad: 'City'-probably the heaviest album of all time. WORD!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen: Devin "Musical Genius" Townsend!!!
the mad scientist of metal!
+Joshua Atherton If they ever do a Back to the Future remake casting Devy as Dr. Emmett Brown is a no brainer.
This song changed my life 20 years ago. So little today can compare.
I'm just glad dev is playing some songs again
It's a master piece of beauty
Probably the best thing musically to come out of Canada.
the best thing out of Canada "period".
Rush...?
Detatipaced
Rush WAS the best thing out of Canada....
Detatipaced Todd Pierson I was honestly waiting for someone to mention Rush. They are indeed legendary, but Strapping is my favorite. I will say that I do like to listen to Rush every now and then. =)
How about Celine Dion? No? Ok...
Dat time signature change... 🤤
Strapping Young Lad: Relieving stress since 1995
Got it in a compilation CD from MetalHammer 25 years ago. It blew my mind then, and still it does every single time.
I remember staying up for the hour of power on jjj to tape this onto cassett and trying to catch it on TV to record on vhs...... Dam I feel old now.
I remember rage on channel 2 after midnight, used to feature touring bands. I would wait and see if they were metal and then spend hours recording
One of the best intros I have ever heard.
What are other songs in metal with epic "chorus" parts like on 2:53-4:00?
The only one i can remember off the top of my head is Slayer's Bloodline. But there's A LOT more, i assure you
There's a FUCKton of other Devin songs lol. Check out his album Addicted! For those big screaming chrouses with Melody.
I love hearing their wall of sound type processor kick in live. I hear it from outside the venues.
Only the very first second of this 5 min 39 song is calm 🤣
I m longing for syl music, i miss the band 🥹
Too scary to listen the first days of detox, but that glorious day when You can actually eat and sleep for the first time!! I'll be having my cerials with this!
EinieN J I’m 6 days clean today. Metal is keeping me alive.
@@DavidDewarSr I'm very happy for You ♥️ I've been 7 months without a drink and now it's time to kick opiates for the final time! Keep going strong! We can do this!! 🤘🏻
EinieN J kicking opiates isn’t easy. You can do it!
@@DavidDewarSr No, no it isn't.. I have tried many, many times.. I've been clean for awhile, like 3-9months, then back again.. But now I think things are going to go well, I'm a bit different, than I was the last time.. Never thought I could be 7 months without a drop, but here I am.. 😊
And Yes, we've got this! ♥️

Good! Keep going!
What a drummer Gene is ! Amazing.
Defining metal.
This. Seen him 4 times now and each time I've been mesmerised!
I remember going to SYL shows here in Vancouver. Townsend would constantly insult the audience between songs. It was hilarious.
Damn I forgot how good this song is! I’ve listened to it like 20 times today lol. I miss this band so much.
Best thing to ever come out of Canada. Gene I know you're American but you are a fucking legend.
Annihilator?
+Raúl Pérez ahh they're good but imo not my favourite out of Canada.
+Raúl Pérez Nomeansno! The Great Granddads of progressive punk rock. Even Devin loves them.
+jerhardt666 ya that's my opinion though. Just like you have your own.
jerhardt666 Fuckin Annihilator!
One of those special songs that perfectly sums up Metal.
