Made all the more powerful by knowledge that this was basically the final performance of SYL before Devin dismantled the band, shaved his head, and moved on to the next phase in his life. Almost brings a tear to the eye. He knew when it was time to say goodbye to this persona, and quit on a high point - never letting SYL get stale. An inspiration for all of us, musician or otherwise, to always move forward. Never get trapped by the past.
It's kind of mad to know that I witnessed this at the festival without even knowing who the fuck they were. I thought it was the maddest shit I'd ever seen at the time, didn't get it. Now I still think it's the maddest shit I've ever seen but damn I love it.
All those people in that audience who had not heard of Strapping before that day had no idea what they were in for! Guarantee no one forgot that performance either.... They absolutely slayed every band that year at Download!
I was there, my friends said "that's an emo band sounding name" I pleased them to trust me on this one. They played either before or after Soulfly so they reluctantly agreed as it was convenient to be at this stage. They were blown away, each and every one of them. Proud moment! Download '06 what a fucking festival. SYL was the reason I went. :D
@@misplaymay I got introduced to Devin/SYL when Terria came out. (Love Earth Day, Canada and Down and Under, on that album) After listening to that album, In that moment I learned the definitions of epiphany and transcendent. I know this might be construed as hyperbolic but I think my reaction to his music is the same as people reacting to Beethoven’s 9th symphony when it was played before it’s first audience. But your friends better have thanked you for showing them what good music actually is. I’m assuming they went out and bought all of his music because that’s exactly what I did when I was heard him lol. 😅 the dude is an absolute genius. That’s an objective fact.
The middle riff of “Critic” is better, imo. The part after he says “Calling in a Soulstrike”. At least I think that’s what he is saying lol. But underneath the waves is a great song. City is my favorite SYL album.
This has got to be how God intended metal to sound. This is music too awesome for me to just be finding now. Feel like I missed out. I need in that pit. Thank you for sharing this. So sick.
I feel you but 2 years latter. I first listen to Devi a couple of weeks and have been finding a new world that i just wish i had found out 20 years ago!
What i love about Don's style is the simplicity. He doesn't over do things and plays to his strengths. Always say you don't have to be technical or fast to be a good drummer.
It was 'Detox' for me personally, back in the late 90's. But still, SYL definitely introduced me to the heavier side of music. Them and Cannibal Corpse.
This song, although is not super "extreme".. I'd say Epicloud or Addicted(especially.. seeing as Dev himself has described it as a Pop album).. there's no denying there's great songs on both albums.. but they ain't SYL extreme lol 😆
I was lucky to see them when I was 15 in 2005 at the Sounds of the Underground tour..was an all day concert with a bunch of different bands and SYL def kicked ass haha. I like Devins solo work but I wish he still did SYL as well.
I was there. It was epic! I'd love to see them again, but that's never gonna happen. Might get to see some SYL material with a different band though, and that's good enough for me.
Catherine everything Devin does is better live, it’s the mark of a truly great musician, and he is that, I mean even calling him great sells it short I think
I have the fortune of being able to go to about 75-80 live shows per year all over the world watching all types of bands perform and one of the few people who never dissapoint is Devin, amazing performer.
Everyone respects Gene, c'mon now. Jed on the other hand, no one seems to talk about him much and he's a fantastic guitarist. Check out his work in Zimmers Hole
Awesome. One of my favorite performaces from the band's show at The Download. Master Devin Townsend is the true master of ceremony. The man is GODLEY. Hail Strapping Young Lad.
One of the many things that make me love Devin is the fact that I never heard him talk about his bipolar (disease) as something that makes him the (great) artist he is. I'm sure that what makes him a great musician, and also a great person, is the fact that he faced his fears and his mental illness. That's why he's one of the best in this genre (and not).
He very indirectly admitted that his condition makes him great when he stopped taking treatment on purpose to write Alien. Anyway I think he's going to be talking about it in his upcoming book.
I actually saw him with the Devin Townshend Project this last weekend and had made mention of how bizarre it is to suffer from a fear of people (who are fundamentally terrifying), then saying fuck it, getting on stage, and pretending to be a metal-singer. His commentary between songs was awesome to a first-time listener.
Sounds like a feature to you, but typically leads people to suicide. He has evolutionalized greatly by controlling it with medication, for musical evolution, his family balance and of course for his own sanity. Great musician!
If you watch his episode of Fact or Fiction, he talks about how he was misdiagnosed with Bi Polar disorder. He stopped taking his medication before recording Alien but continued to use drink and drugs and that tipped him over the edge. He says since he got sober, "everything has been weirdly fine".
Can't believe it's been 10 years since they broke up!!!! Man time flies hope for a reunion someday. But till then The Devin Townsend Project can stick around they're cool too
Such a fucking awesome song. This whole album rips. I got the pleasure of seeing S.Y.L. play their self titled in it's entirety at Milwaukee Metalfest in the early 2000's.
I've been listening to underground metal for like the longest time (since the early 90s) how I am just hearing about these guys is beyond me... wish I could have seen (experienced) this. Thanks for sharing! 🍻
I’m not sure but I think he might have fallen asleep and hasn’t fallen over because people are packed like sardines. I think the guy headbanging (more like nodding, if you ask me) on the right looks very funny, though. Whichever way you slice it, it’s all hilarious. 😄
after the fallout, you wake up with a snot in your face buried in rabble. in the distant there are sounds of hevy machinery pounding and crushing the souls of angels. as you continue your way through the desolate city ruins you hear those who seek redemption and those who seek revenge... then you wake up and it's time to inhale another one for the storm. peace.
mid-2000s era Devy was probably the scariest musician ever.
Gene Hoglans drums would probably disagree.
It's the hair.....or lack thereof
Scariest? I think you meant kick assest. You're welcome.
Glen Benton from Deicide is scariest check him out.
Metal Al Yankovic

What I love most about this song is it that the main riff is so simple and yet soooooo powerul. I honnestly put it on my top 10 of heaviest riffs.
Samuel Martin Just like the middle riff of Underneath The Waves

The Atomic Clock
absolute beast
the sort of man to go to war with
SYL is some of his best work too, he’s the first one who will say that to you too

One of the few artists who can pull off vocals onstage consistently. Sounds like a studio version or even better
There's not doubt that Devin is the most charismatic vocalist in metal.
Imagine him and 90s Philip Anselmo on the same stage
This song is the gateway drug for mainstream metalheads.
It was 'Detox' for me personally, back in the late 90's. But still, SYL definitely introduced me to the heavier side of music. Them and Cannibal Corpse.

Probably won't get back together. I wish this band was bad ass. According to devin .
they won't reunite again but devin does play some songs every now and then, there's a show where he invited jed! :)
Long hair or bald?
Why not both?
The brutality blew it off.
Hail the Skullet
Haha...I believe he called it his Skullet...lol
That brief moment when Strapping dipped one toe in the mainstream (audience, not musically) before calling it a day! Miss this band so much!

Crazy to think that Dev had so recently quit doing drugs when this was filmed, shows that his insanity isn't dependent on externals.
