  • Highfield inflatables are some of the best yacht tenders on the market. This rib boat is paired with a Flux outboard electric motor. The amount of speed that this boat had at its holes hot was amazing . My name is Alfred Montaner Host of the Chit Show in Miami.

    Looks like an ideal motor for a 20-22 ft. pontoon on a lake. Where 1-1.5 hours of cruising with a few quick rips or pulling kids on a tube and a sunset cruise might be the typical use.
    In Salt water, the way it's set up on the Highfield is great if that truly was a dinghy for your yacht. Or use it for putt-putting around a harbor but beyond that, like all EV vehicles so far, it's not suited for general saltwater use due to extremely limited range.

      In the case of this it is not something you can really separate. A significant portion of the boat is batteries, the electric motors are very efficient but not it is about the batteries just like an EV. It is more of a unit than components put together like a traditional boat and motor.

  • @U20E27

      Add a compact hybrid generator . Or wait for Al Sulper or Li sulphur... Your getting towards the x10 energy density equiv of liquid fuels.
      But if you are serious about range at speed with electric....he gave you the answer foils ... get the boat out of the water its faster smoother and uses about 20-25% of the energy.. so range increases as soon as you start to foil at about 20mph.

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665a foil only works in max 2 ft chop. not anywhere near 6ft-8ft thats common that far offshore. do you think a 40ft center console is going to ride on foils? and no... we arent getting batteries like that for 50 years. in the last 10+ years, energy density has only increased 15% max lol. the other issue is weight: even if we could get double the energy density, they are still way too heavy and will stay the same weight empty or full. thats a hurdle that you just cant overcome with batteries. also 99% of time you cannot charge on the water. unless you have your own dock with 240v charger, which is extremely rare. marinas dont have the dock space to accommodate 10 of these waiting to charge. and then there is price. this makes no sense for offshore anything. gasoline is unbeatable.

      @@ct1762
      Displacement hulls are going to consume huge power...that's inevitable the size of the boat and foils will determine that plus the fact that boats like the Candelas and an Irish electric ferry building use computer controlled foils.
      In both cases we are talking about N Sea and Irish sea ..regular sea states. Yes it's a Rib but it's the sort of boat that gets used on luxury Yatchs.
      That are increasingly going hybrid and incorporating solar and if sailing regen through the same electric propulsion motors.
      At the moment the battery tech is at a tipping point. AI is now being used to sort and sift elements and compounds and configure them so what has happened over the past 10-15 yrs is being overtaken by what has happened in the past year or two. Li Sulphur and Al Sulphur possibly using Li, can increase storage and safety by a factor of 5 or more by the time energy storage gets to a factor of Ten. Your equal to liquid fuels
      Plus you can make electricity off grid.
      Coming back to the present and what's possible now the possibilities are the fuel cell ...still where batteries were a decade ago.. or the compact ICE gen set if I were to offer you a genset that is about the size of two large shoe boxes .. produces 24-30kwhr and can run on a range of liquid or gas fuels at efficiency s 30-50% beyond direct drive ICE motors quietly, cleaner and with less, parts, maintainance and lighter.
      Take a look at the Edison motors topsey logging truck from BC Canada for proof of principle. Assuming a boat is running between locations shore to shore, or ship to shore, boat to boat. Then most of the time the range isn't going to be a major restriction. For those occasions where sustained running is required then the battery monitoring or a gauge and manual switching on the generator can cut in.. remember you are talking of units that are 1/5 the volume and mass of a propulsion ICE system ..
      There are two such units that I know of in an advanced production testing state ..the twin cylinder opposed free piston genset developed by Durham university 🇬🇧 and then Toyota .. which tends to have developed a head in sand out- look to alternatives and electric power🤦🏻 The other is the Liquid piston rotary motor. Two very small light and very simple less than 50 parts, engines that only need to run at their Stoichiometric optimum only as needed.
      If your going offshore unless your in sailing boat you are unlikely to be using a vessel this small.
      In Europe and other places working and rescue vessels are already using e motors from Massive tugs to life boats using hybrid power..ferries and water taxis .... turns out at night in fog and seas it's easier and safer to search for people in the water without any engine noise.. also you don't polute or bother the neighbours. There are more locations where for multiple reasons where running two strokes is already banned. The fact that the average marine diesel engine is 80 times more polluting than its automotive equivalent in almost every way.
      Humans or marine .. ship and boat marine noise is a major factor in stressing and breeding of marine life.

    Add a short mast and a wind generator, some solar panels and run a small gas generator, the range could increase. The question, how much more range? And, what does this set-up cost?

    • @thedevilinthecircuit1414
      @thedevilinthecircuit1414 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The solar panels and small gas generator would work, but a wind-powered generator would not once you crunch some numbers. It's not 'free' energy unless the boat is stationary and existing wind is running it.

      doubtful. battery energy density has basically stayed the same for the last 15 years. then there is charging: on the water, there is literally nowhere outside of a private dock. marinas will not have the dockage to let these things charge on shore power when huge yachts need them and the slip space.

    i guarantee if you put a 100hp V4 old school 2 stroke OMC or merc on the back it would be 90% as quick off the line, and have significantly higher top end because of the massive weight reduction. then there is range: no comparison. also, its yet to be seen how reliable these really are in a salt enviorment. vs buying a real outboard for 1/5 the price.
