I can already tell this is going to hit a soft spot. In high school, after an eviction, my family and I lived in an extended stay hotel. Some of the best and worst memories I have.
Best and worst, exactly. They're not exactly miserable, and they're having an amazing childhood in some ways. So much so that when the child gets a chance at a safer, more normal life, you feel very sorry for her. She was after all having the time of her life.
This is the most accurate movie about at risk children ive ever seen. Especially taking place in Florida, this really hits home. Ive lived this life as a child and its so true to life.
Especially when Moonie says ‘don’t make me say it…bye’ while crying killed me. She’s losing everything that matters to her; her mom, her home, and especially her best friend.
This is the harsh reality of many of the people in this area. I drive by all these places every single day on the way to work. I have had co-workers and family who have lived in these conditions. This is very real. I hope the film is as great as it looks.
@@Purplecolors88 I bet those kids would prefer to keep roaming around abandoned houses and spitting from balconies than ceasing to exist. Every life is a blessing.
Grew up poor, but I got to LIVE. The countless adventures in the woods, the friends, the freedom... roaming flea markets alone with other kids my age, climbing on old knocked down trees, feeding the local cows and goats. We now live somewhat comfortable and a part of me is happy my kids will never know the struggle I knew, but a part of me is also sad they won't experience the adventure of life I had that you can't really show them unless you were at that place of struggle. Everything looks different from down there, and so much more amazing. Will be watching this tonight with my 13 year old who recommended it to me.
hipster cinematography, casting experienced and familiar actors that otherwise would not get decent roles anymore (unfortunately) and an actual story (you know, with a message).
Indie Movie Production that uses a combination of experienced actors/actresses and up and coming actors/actresses, along with Fantastic story telling and great cinemetography. They're about making a quality film, not how much money can we make. They did Moonlight, Room, It Comes at Night, and A Ghost Story
I love that they showed some of the most recognizable places in the Kissimmee area. This makes me so happy for some reason. Seeing the area I grew up in on the big screen.
Wu YiFan's Chin Scar Haha ikr, I live in Titusville but we go to the Orange County and Kissimmee are almost everyother day. I stopped and paused the video at the Orange and Wizard gift shop lol
Children tend to be great actors because they don’t really block themselves from being immersed in the character and plot. They also have vivid imaginations and tend to play characters anyway in their day to day life. At least from what I’ve noticed from being involved in the performing arts. Kids are wonderful🥰
This movie really hit home for me because in my hometown, there are small communities like the one in this film. People, like the tourists that call the motel a dump & such, don't understand that the people living in these communities are still human beings like you & me. Yes, they might have put themselves in these situations, but they're still human. I know friends, I even have a couple of family members who live in these kinds of communities and they are some of my closest friends and family that I love truly. Willem Dafoe's character shows humanity towards the people living in his motel, while the people who pass by don't. Because they are not just people living in his motel, they are his friends and like family to him. The Florida Project is one of the best films of 2017, and a very important film overall.
Brooklynn Price's (Moonee) final minutes in the movie left me shocked. I hope she keeps acting in the future. Her crying to Jancey gave me goosebumps. Was not expecting her to not only cry on cue, but cry WHILE STILL reciting her lines. Crazy good for how young she is
This is an incredible movie that depicts poverty and childhood - an unrepresented population in America. It delves into the bitter truth of living in a culture of systemic exploitation. We see both the mom and the children in the movie learning the rules of living a life where exploitation is the cultural norm. It is a Thelma and Louise of childhood. Going back a bit farther, it is akin to Mother Courage and Her Children - a play by Bertolt Brecht which depicts life as a mother trying to survive in a decades long European war.
Nope, the mother of this movie is a horrid person, she does nothing to better her, or her child’s, life in any way. The other moms and dads seem to be trying at the very least, but the main mother is a degenerate who does nothing to help her child. Unfortunate, that means the daughter will grow to be just like her, childish, without reason on fear of consequences.
The simplicity, honesty, tenderness and sadness of this movie is so beautiful. The acting feels as though you're watching regular people and that is a true testament to the actors and director. Also, even though it takes place in motels and traffic, the movie is wonderful to look at. Wonderful film!

This movie is special as it taps into those transitions in life where one part of your life ends but you’ve not yet reach the beginning of a new one. It’s an in between where you experience freedom as a child but instability and uncertainty as an adult. And then life forces you into a situation. I can’t explain it.
during that first hour, i kept thinking "there's no way they're going to redeem hailee. she's repulsive. the most unlikable character in years!!!" and lo and behold, they did. my heart was breaking for her and her daughter at the end. just.... damm. that's brilliant film making and story telling.
This movie made me cry, the ending especially. It really reminded of the innocence of little kids and how they can find good anywhere, even without any money.
It's a powerful film that deserves to be seen, but I'm amazed that some people found it funny and heartwarming. That wasn't the mood when I saw it; the audience left in complete silence, looking shaken by what they had seen. Sensitive people will find some scenes difficult and disturbing to watch, as the doomed central characters head towards tragedy, seemingly unwilling and unable to change course.
I hope you find it rewarding, but at least you'll be prepared! Some of the reviews/synopses are amazingly misleading, making it sound like a nostalgic story featuring sweet kids having adventures.
It's ridiculous that neither VALERIA COTTO or BRIA VINAITE were considered for Best Supporting or Best Actress nominations, I mean some of the actresses nominated were so mediocre this year.
@@henryettoit897 It didn't cast Disney in a bad light at all. The film portrayed Disney World as an unreachable utopia, but it didn't fault Disney for the fact that these people weren't responsible enough to afford it
@@henryettoit897 Is there something that proves that or are you just guessing? I mean the chances of a couple voters deciding that the movie is anti-Disney and then swaying the vote are very slim. It's not like the Academy has a ton of Disney employees and even if it did then again I don't understand how the movie would be perceived as hating on Disney
Watching the preview a couple times, seeing the girl explore the town with her friends, remind me of being a free range child in the seventies and eighties. Went on adventures, came back before the street light came on.
I always wished to live back in the 80's. Me and my friends love to bike in the summer, play on the beach, eat icecream, and play baseball until it was sunset. It's a shame that we don't see a lot of kids outside anymore.
Free range 70’s kid here as well. The wonderful things you did and discovered with your friends before the street lights came on, and you had the cuts and bruises to prove it! I still have a (faded) long scrape scar on my thigh from falling off my bike going super fast downhill and sliding on concrete to the bottom. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Just. It just. I've never seen a movie that pinned me the floor with silence and introspection. None of it feels like a film, and it's characters are people we all recognize. It's innocence is brutailty. While adults are crumbling the children are just living and playing and can't grasp the tragedy around them which is the truely tragic part. When Moonie cries it was such an honest wet fingers in her mouth kind of a cry that any parent would recognize and rips your heart out. I want to say it's art, but it was so literal and honest that it doesn't even feel like art. It just feels like another day, and that is beautiful no matter how painful it is.
That is the beauty and purpose of films like this one. To open our eyes and try to see things from a different perspective. That’s how we learn. That’s how we become better.
I was recommended this movie from a friend and I truly enjoyed the innocence of the children. They lived in poverty, but found the joy in every little thing. What an amazing film (but it felt like a documentary).
I'm going to major in Film Making after I graduate high school and it's my dream to work for A24. They have just created so many amazing and deep films that continues to tell beautiful and engaging stories, and that's exactly what I want to be able to do one day.

I really related to this film because I grew up poor and my imagination made my situation unknown to me and my siblings. A truly beautiful movie that will please humanists. Every cast member serves an Oscar. The directing, producing and script writing is award worthy, too. Willem Dafoe really endears the audience and that just proves how great an actor he is, playing a villain to a soft hearted gruff character. I see great things for Brooklynn Prince, the main character.
Maxmillan Maxmillan well "poor" children in the US are not actually poor. They usually have a roof, plumbing, ac, beds, clean clothing, foodstamps, cartoons, free school, healthcare etc. Much more than poor kids in other countries. Its only when theyre old enough to compare themselves to the joneses that they feel "poor" but they are not very poor.
I disagree. Many poor children in the US have substandard diet, no ac, bedbugs, poor medical care, substandard clothes and shoes, untreated or undiagnosed learning disabilities, no dental care, and stress from absent parents. Sure they are not labouring in mines but still poor. And lots are homeless. @@alexandramn6734

I grew up in Florida. Not in a hotel but I’m of the last generation that was able to play outside freely without fear of something terrible happening. This film captures so much of that freeness and carefreeness of being a child. As kid you’re happy regardless of your surroundings.
I don’t know how to describe it but this is such a beautiful movie. Yes, it’s slow burn, yes it’s slice of life, yes it’s simple. But the cinematography, the screenplay. It’s just so beautiful. It’s heartfelt. The film just captures a piece of life that people may not know. It’s beautiful.
Every few months I come here to watch this trailer to remind myself how beautiful this movie is. I wish I could erase my memory so that I watch it again for the first time.
I love this movie. I think about it often. Can never remember the name and finally looked it up to watch again. I'll never forget it going forward. The end...😢
My fiancé grew up in a similar situation/setting to the one in this film and she was choked up for almost the entire runtime. We watch a lot of movies together and she believes that this film captures childhood innocence amidst American poverty in a more accurate way than anything else she's seen.
This movie was incredible. Brought me back to my childhood. This movie felt so real. I cannot believe this was Bria Vinaites first film! She did such a good job I seriously forgot she was acting. She played that character so well. The children in this movie were also so amazing. I have never seen a film where all the children in the film could actually ACT. This film really stuck with me. One of the most thought provoking films I have seen in a while . How on earth did they get a performance like this out of a 6 yr old ! Defoe immense. A masterful piece of social observation on the innocence of childhood and how American society has failed so many . Tragic but moving .
Apart from showcasing the beauty and innocence of childhood that is so well done in this film, this trailer really isn't representative of the movie. The Florida Project is a slice of life piece that explores various aspects of poverty. It's fantastic, but don't expect a "feel good" experience.
I am a school bus driver. I used to drop a little girl off at a motel that was raised off the ground. I would let her watch Bluey on my phone before she would go back to the awfulness. I’ve cried several times thinking about it. I’m sorry to anyone reading this who grew up in a similar or worse way.
I grew up living in Orlando my whole life and my family always had passes to Universal, Disney and Seaworld. I've been to all three parks more than I could ever count and it truly is magical. With that said, it is heartbreaking to know that this is the very situation that so many families live in and I'm so thankful that I never did. And what is pretty haunting to me is, that this motel, The Magic Castle is probably about 2/3 miles from Disney World.
Such a fantastic movie. I love that the director seemingly let the kids improvise at times. Made those random moments of them being rotten kids so real. The ending was amazing too, I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie
I live for almost a year homeless in a hotel right down the street from where this movie was shot there really is an epidemic of families living in hotels there because housing is so hard to come by I'm so happy that they made a movie about this. Can't wait to see it.
Man, just saw this. Very different from anything I've seen on TV. Gorgeously filmed, superb scenes, carefree children, and harsh reality in the background. Unique film, happy I've seen it. 5/5. Glad that my national TV service (Sweden) chose to pick up this one. More of the world needs to see this
It you haven’t watched it, stop the trailer and go watch it. Brilliant acting it almost feels real and simply a beautiful film that everyone should watch
I just saw this. I was literally one day away from being homeless while raising my daughter much of the time. If you crossed one person or if they were remotely jealous they’d call CPS on you. I never had tattoos, never did drugs, but I remember the struggle. It was every day.
This movie is so nostalgic. It wasn't my childhood, but it reminded me of summers spent with my cousins in Virginia. We had so much freedom, probably too much, and almost got hurt once. There was danger and sadness surrounding those days, but I'll always remember them fondly
Such an underrated movie, the cinematography is breathtaking, the acting is realistic, the casting is great, the ending was amazing. This movie deserves more love than it got

I just recently found this on Netflix (because quarantine) and wow! I’m impressed. As a 17 year old, I’ve never seen this side of life. I live in a house in the suburbs in western Pennsylvania, born to two parents with degrees, jobs, and a mortgage. Kids never want what they don’t know. I didn’t know extreme amounts of freedom because my parents cared. This movie shows the opposite. She didn’t mind if her mom didn’t care because she had freedom.

This movie is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. I was sucked in. Incredible job.

Ultimately, almost nothing uplifting about this fucking film, except through the eyes of a child too young to see how it might end.😢😢😭😭
This is the harsh reality of many of the people in this area. I drive by all these places every single day on the way to work. I have had co-workers and family who have lived in these conditions. This is very real. I hope the film is as great as it looks.

This scene broke me and my son. We started bawling
What is it with A24 and the fact that they make good shit?
gogotrololo 619 and sadly nobody goes to see them.
hipster cinematography, casting experienced and familiar actors that otherwise would not get decent roles anymore (unfortunately) and an actual story (you know, with a message).
I think A24 replaced Harvey Weinstein as the go-to production house for anything indie, cerebral, and plain good.
Indie Movie Production that uses a combination of experienced actors/actresses and up and coming actors/actresses, along with Fantastic story telling and great cinemetography. They're about making a quality film, not how much money can we make. They did Moonlight, Room, It Comes at Night, and A Ghost Story
cheeze whiz After the events of this weekend (Harvey Weinstein’s ousting from TWC), it’s official. A24 is the indie king right now.
I love that they showed some of the most recognizable places in the Kissimmee area. This makes me so happy for some reason. Seeing the area I grew up in on the big screen.
Wu YiFan's Chin Scar Same, major nostalgia. Hopefully Old Town shows up at some point, it's right next to Orange World so why not?
Sticky Krippy Holy shit so true. I hope so!
It looks like they're gonna cover most of the 192 landmarks, so Old Town should definitely be in there. That's like THE 192 landmark

What’s up with all these child actors and why are they so good. At their age i Couldn’t even say my name in front of class
ikr the lead girl is amazing, i have no idea who is responsible, whether the director or casting job but very well done, she is hilarious.
I know right! The acting in this movie was great! The kids did an amazing job!
I feel like they did a lot of improv. Let the kids be kids while the camera rolls. Lots of editing down for sure.
Love this movie. My favorite.

Barbara Collier
Well said
Nope, the mother of this movie is a horrid person, she does nothing to better her, or her child’s, life in any way.

It's a powerful film that deserves to be seen, but I'm amazed that some people found it funny and heartwarming. That wasn't the mood when I saw it; the audience left in complete silence, looking shaken by what they had seen. Sensitive people will find some scenes difficult and disturbing to watch, as the doomed central characters head towards tragedy, seemingly unwilling and unable to change course.
nice name :)
Yours is nicer! :)
I can totally relate to that surely I'll be one of those people in silence, it looks like a good film, I'll watch it
I hope you find it rewarding, but at least you'll be prepared! Some of the reviews/synopses are amazingly misleading, making it sound like a nostalgic story featuring sweet kids having adventures.
I felt the same. Some moments between the daughter and mother were sweet, but overall the movie was powerful, yet depressing.
It's ridiculous that neither VALERIA COTTO or BRIA VINAITE were considered for Best Supporting or Best Actress nominations, I mean some of the actresses nominated were so mediocre this year.
MerkinMuffly That's the Academy for you.
they snubbed this movie because it casted Disney in a bad light.
@@henryettoit897 It didn't cast Disney in a bad light at all. The film portrayed Disney World as an unreachable utopia, but it didn't fault Disney for the fact that these people weren't responsible enough to afford it
@@calebvilla246 tell that to disney who used their weight to influence the oscar panel regarding this film.
You are in for a treat .It was really a beautiful story hope you saw the movie.
I always wished to live back in the 80's. Me and my friends love to bike in the summer, play on the beach, eat icecream, and play baseball until it was sunset. It's a shame that we don't see a lot of kids outside anymore.
We're just trying to make the best out of our childhood before we start our last years of highschool.
sp00ky Because of to much technology. Kids are lazy.
This is just crazy that I drive by this motel like every day and now I see the perspective of how it is
I dying to go and just take pics of myself at the motel
That is the beauty and purpose of films like this one. To open our eyes and try to see things from a different perspective. That’s how we learn. That’s how we become better.
@@abrahamcb Very well said, That's the beauty of Cinema💜

I grew up living in Orlando my whole life and my family always had passes to Universal, Disney and Seaworld. I've been to all three parks more than I could ever count and it truly is magical.
