  • J. Krishnamurti - San Diego 1974 - Conversation 7 - Understanding, not controlling, desire
    Summary:
Q: What is pleasure? What is desire?
We are not condemning pleasure but observing it. To go into the question of pleasure one has to look into desire. Through propaganda desire is inflamed.
What is desire? How does it come about that this very strong desire is born, cultivated? Must desire be controlled at all? Desire seems to be a very active and demanding instinct that is going on all the time.
Why has pleasure, whether of sex, possession, power, knowledge or enlightenment, become so extraordinarily important in life? Pleasure is an extraordinary thing. To see a beautiful thing and to enjoy it, what is wrong with that?

The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

9:20 - "The more commercial and usage of things, the more desire grows. You can see it: commercialism and consumerism. Through propaganda desire is inflamed."
It's great to see someone describing greed, brainwashing and materialism without mislabeling it as 'capitalism'.

capitalism is an answer to this greed where you accept it with the resulting violence . Like the idea to control it which is not a response of the problem of desir too. So capitalism is not the greed but one of expressions of it

Correct, but capitalism does very much rely on this consumer-materialistic greed. If people lived in moderation and merely consumed what they actually needed, the world economy would collapse tomorrow.

Desire seeks to fulfill something we believe we "need" or is otherwise missing from our life that we further believe will ultimately fulfill wants and cravings for pleasure (in avoiding both physical and psychological pain).

That analogy between the guy on the road for 55 years, and that being a substitute for 55 years of going to the office for business and money … damn that’s so heavy, so right.

Where desire meets necessity with acceptance of what is there seems to be freedom that leaves an individual to find pleasure beside responsibility

Wenn you have thoughts, is there a thinker?
    Perceiving the impermanency of thoughts,thought itself creates the thinker who gives himself permanency;
So thought creates the thinker; then the thinker establishes himself as a permanent entity apart from thoughts which are always in state of flux.
So the thought creates the thinker and not the other way about.
The thinker does not create thought, for if there are no thoughts, there is no thinker.
The thinker separates himself from his parent and tries to establish a relationship - a relationship between the so-called permanent, which is the thinker created by thought, and the impermanent or transient, which is thought. So, both are really transient.

Are you saying the conscious mind is the thinker n the action of thought creates the conscious being aka the thinker because without thought we wouldn't be conscious n without out the consciousness we wouldn't have thoughts or u just using philosophy word play n saying there has to be another whole another being that comes to effect when we have thoughts n call the action something n have to give that thing a title n call it a entity
