No musical artist has ever affected me as deeply as John Prine. I never tire of listening to the simple poetry of his lyrics and the elegant picking of his strings. “I Remember Everything” is so beautiful, yet so melancholy. A life well lived...but far too short.
I’ve seen my significant other cry two times in the decade we have been together. Once when his grandfather died and the other was when John Prine did. You said it perfectly... ❤️
With you. I had the occasion to see him perform three times from the late 90's to the early 2000's and was a fan long before then. A poet, wordsmith and a performer he was.
I remember the evening John came home having written a new song with Pat McLaughlin. He loved to write with Pat because it meant he got to hang out with him-they were old friends and committed co-writers. John and Pat had shared many Meat and Three lunches and written some beautiful songs together over the years. I had never seen John quite like this when he had a new song to bring home. He literally bounced in the door, immediately took his guitar from its case and said, “Listen to this Fi...” He was excited and proud, but there was something else too. As he picked the melody I could see he was emotional with tears welling up in his eyes. “I’ve been down this road before, alone as I can be careful not to let my past go sneakin’ up on me.... He stumbled over some of the lyrics, stopped, and started again. A yearning, evocative, and simple melody; his classic fingerpicking and a somewhat familiar yet new 3-chord melody from the same old D-28 John had written every song on. “I remember everything, things I can’t forget the way you turned and smiled on me on the night that we first met...” He made it through the song and explained there were still some tweaks needed and asked, “What do you think Fi ?” We were both crying a little by now and I told him it was beautiful - that it was as beautiful a song as he had ever written. John would always say, ‘No song before it’s time.’ I’m not sure if he heard that from someone else but I know he absolutely believed it to be true. It appears John knew more than I imagined about the demands of Time. He left us a beautiful and timely parting gift. Thank you, John. Thank you, for Everything. Fiona Whelan Prine
Thank you so much for sharing this memory with us. I have loved his music since I was a kid. Now that I am old, I especially love this song, and “I remember everything, things I can’t forget the way you turned and smiled on me on the night that we first met...” I do try not to let my past go sneakin' up on me, but it often does.
Thank you for sharing that. I love playing this song. "Swimming pools of butterflies slip right through my net." Just when I thought he couldn't hit my heart again, there he went and did it.
Miss you something fierce, John. You were a good friend and great a babysitter for Jason in the 1970s…you and Stevie Goodman took turns watching him in the bleachers of The Troubadour in LA. Stan Goldstein was Jason’s godfather and we miss him too.
...john prine is one of the few singer-songwriters whose integrity remained intact in the rough and tumble of the music industry...what a life...a legend..
John Prine’s goodbye song was as poignant, but not as sad as Glen Campbell’s, “I’m Not Going to Miss You.” They each had a different end to their story!🤗
Love love love John Prine. His music is never ending. I can listen to his voice all day. His music and words resonate with me like few others can. His music helped me through some dark days. Actually he’s still helping me get through some difficult times. Rest In Peace Mr. Prine.
This song rips my heart out. I sure hope he is still remembering. What a huge impact his songs brought to those of us that were lucky enough to discover his music.
This song brings me such happiness and joy but also a sense of longing for John Prine, my mother, and other people who remain in my life in spirit only.
Ive specified that this song--along with the Wailin Jennys version of The Parting Glass--be played at the "Farmers Breakfast" gathering following my funeral. As an Orthodox Christian(Slavic/Russian version) the funeral will take 2 days so everyone will be ready for a good meal a shot of Irish whiskey and these two great tunes...none more fitting...hooefully this aint hapoening for a while. .thanks Handsome John for the gift of your musical poetry!!
I don't think I would have made it without John Prine's poetry and music. He helped me wade through some very dark times. Thank you, John Prine. RIP dear John.
Leave it to my music hero of 47 years to leave us with a perfect denouement to the end of his phenomenal songwriting career. All three of my books of Songs and Poetry give John Prine credit for sparking the writer in me. I am forever thankful and grateful that I was turned on to his music at the age of 17 in 1973. Just before I joined the Navy... Thousands of Submarine Sailors have heard me sing his songs since 1974...They ALL appreciated his style and intellect... I spent my entire adult life trying to write just one song that could match up to him...But I never did... I will miss him forever...But I will forever remember every song he ever sang too... Rest in Peace Handsome Johnny and save the Wednesday night Gig at the Tree of Forgiveness in Heaven for me man...I can hardly wait to book a steady show there... God Bless the Family and all John Prine fans everywhere...Here's my tribute to John from a few years back I wrote for his 70th Birthday. th-cam.com/video/SU6zKffemP0/w-d-xo.html
As far as last records go I sure thought Tree of Forgiveness was a helluva swan song, even more so after he passed. That this is the last song he wrote and recorded, particularly given how he died and the current state of the world....it’s simply magic. He left us with something to help us grieve his loss. Who, but John Prine, does this? Blessings to his family and loved ones.
Hearing this takes me back to the time when I used to live in those hills. I can picture Tyler topping that hill with busted boots and overalls carrying that fox. With a big shit grin he hands me a 50$ bill and the fox as if handing me a trophy or a badge of honor. There’s more to the story but the song captures the moment in time so clear as do most of his songs. It’s this song and story that’s the inspiration for the fox on his album covers. Thanks T. Aaron.
So beautiful.. John Prine was a lyrical genius.. a humble beautiful human being .. his voice & his passing makes me weep .. I loved him & still do.. so much . His words just hit me deep in my soul. How incredibly blessed we all where to know his music. Much love & gentle hugs to his beautiful wife Fiona & his sons. Thank you so much for sharing John with us. xxx❤️🙏🏼☘️🕊🕊
i remember the day, decades ago, that i first discovered John's music; the song was Lake Marie, it remains one of my favorites so many years later. And now, 'I Remember Everything' will reside along side Lake Marie as one of my very favorite John Prine Stories (song). *sigh*
I remember every concert, every road trip with your albums playing, every sad and happy moment. Every JP song I sing at an open mic night. You are the very best of us. Happy birthday. X
At 62 years old I found a song that touched me enough to make me cry.. I really felt it.. Thank you John for a beautiful song. Rest in peace, God bless you..
Much love to the Prine family. My short interaction with one of his sons was a pleasant one, especially considering I was out of my mind at the time. Sorry for freaking out the folks at the record label, the good news is I'm much better now, and I managed to find some answers on my journey. I wish I had had the chance to see John play live, but I'm glad to have his music to comfort me for the rest of time.
I have tears of happiness listening to this poignant last message to us. Oh John, heaven has a special music man in their midsts now. We remain bereft because you left us too soon. I will always remember you my friend. In another post of this same song, Mark Kinser posted, "The best friend I ever had that never knew me." Sums it up beautifully and hopefully a wonderful song comes from it! Thank you Mr Prine for enriching my life beyond my wildest imagination.
Lyrical hero to me on many levels. Sitting by a campfire beneath a star lit sky with beverage of choice listening to John's music...doesn't get any better!!!
Miss you so much John. We were robbed of your wondrous light in our darkest time. Thinking of your beautiful family every day. May they find comfort soon
I thank the good lord for the magical gift of John Prine. I’ve been truly blessed to have experienced all that he graced us with. I’m grateful for all the laughs, and all the tears that fell down my aging face. I miss John Prine dearly.
I was planning to attend his performance that was to have taken place this month, in Santa Cruz, CA. I am so sad about this terrible loss, as John wrote with such insight into being "human", how to move forward in the difficulties, losses and wins of life. Thank you John.
John's simplicity and honesty in his presentation is something few artist have today .I don't think he could have rapped up a lifetime of giving any better than this RIP my friend your music will live on for an eternity
How Beautiful. I believe we met when I was in High School. Thank you for existing. What a world to be a part of. Blessings..Asian Angel. Truck Norris. Romain Garvas. Amen. Amen. Amen.
The 12 human beings with out any heart or soul - who gave this thumbs down. O. I know we all make mistakes. But damn . if you can't say anything good toward that man- something is way off in the universe we live in. When you meet him in heaven- he will smother y'all with his charm and might buy drinks for the hypocrites also. 180 proof spirit for y'all kind of spirit. Hatoraide
Beautifully done! Ya know, If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior, turn from sinful living and as best you can follow His ways which are taught in the Bible then when He comes soon on that last day, or when you take your last breath, there will never ever again be any more sorrows, no more tears, no more good byes and no more death! Stop it. If you want to preach, start a church. Looking for Jesus the Christ outside of yourself is a fruitless search. As John sang, and I quote. "...try and find Jesus on your own."

It's interesting how "straight laced" Prine's family is when you realize Prine was such a huge influence on hippy's back in the day. A Guy and Susanna lifestyle he did not live
I remember damned few things, but I remember John Prine.

I'd give you a thumb's up just for using 'affect' correctly.

One hundred percent agree♥️💖
You said it

Damn. This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Also one of the most beautiful.
Made me cry too.
Such beautiful sadness.
Especially when we lost you.
Rest in Peace John Prine.
You were a Bard of your time.

Perfectly put.
Somehow, my heart still breaks
Yeah I'm choked up.
That's cause he knew the end was near

for 50 years i've lugged John around with me. it's been a treat.
Me too. Lightest load I've ever carried.

Same
John Denver did the same for me starting in 1971❣️ But, now I see I need to go back and listen to John Prine’s brilliance‼️
This song rips my heart out. I sure hope he is still remembering. What a huge impact his songs brought to those of us that were lucky enough to discover his music.
My Angel JOHN PRINE .❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This song brings me such happiness and joy but also a sense of longing for John Prine, my mother, and other people who remain in my life in spirit only.
That is a very touching comment, I would believe it is shared by so many of us.
Nicely said Robbie. All the best.
I lost both my grandparents this last year...this song makes me weep everytime.
A part of me left when John was no longer with us….

Two amazing choices, the WJ Parting Glass gets me every time. They both do.
May YHWH bless you. People think that elders don't remember but we do.I do.
John and Steve Goodman are now playing for God in heaven.
Having cocktails - vodka and ginger ale, smoking cigarettes nine miles long. ❤️
@@robtsologtr you can bet your last dollar on that :)
YouBet
These two guys used to babysit my son back in the 70s.
Steve is still trying to teach John to play the guitar, 😉. Beautiful song, may they both rest in peace. There will never be a song writer like jp.
Touching song. It strikes the deepest chords of the soul.
Love ya Mr Prine RIP and thank you for making this a more beautiful world with your presence.

I truly miss you John!
The man is sadly missed.
An exquisite piece, sung in that gorgeous humane voice
First heard this on the grammy's by Brandi Carlile and was crying so much! What a marvelous performance.

such a great loss. around the campfires at music fests there would often be three different prine songs going at the same time. such great memmories
Beautiful song, I miss him. Think of him and his music everyday.
It's interesting how "straight laced" Prine's family is when you realize Prine was such a huge influence on hippy's back in the day. A Guy and Susanna lifestyle he did not live
We tip our collective hats to you endlessly

John Prine…of the Folk…for the Folk…Singer
Lord I miss John, sure wanted him to live more than he did,
Espectacular....
My post card featuring my John Prine guitar case! Painted by my brother n law, Keaton Tycer. At 1:10. 😍
Another simple song with so much meaning by the late great John Prine.
My artist. No-one is like you, my friend
ah, john. you've made me cry. yet again. thank you so much and may you rest in peace.
John Prine always easily managed the hardest part of good songwriting - how to keep it simple but with lots of depth. I remember every song.
John Prine just cuts through the posturing, goes to life's essential pulse. Great song. Take care.
I just cried
