How Does It Sound? | Building A Custom Exhaust For My 4X4 Chevy Van

Using junkyard parts I build a DIY exhaust for my Chevy Van on the cheap! This is the first in a series of modifications to make the van more comfortable for longer highway trips. Follow along as we build the ultimate adventure mobile!

My dad had one of these vans when I was a kid (late 70s). 67 GMC Handy Van version. No side windows (panel van). Short wheel base. Canary yellow. Chrome Cragar wheels. Fat 50 series rear tires. Skinnies up front. Small block Chevy V8. Factory 3 speed manual with 4.11 pos rear end. It could lift the front tires about 10 inches off the ground launching in street light drag races. Good to see you building your grand dad's van. Thanks for sharing.

A few differences that may prevent your van from lifting the front tires. Your model has a longer wheel base, the added weight of the front 4X4 axle, heavier front tires, drive shaft and transfer case. Ours was a short wheel base, 2wd with skinny front tires. Making the engine weight closer to rear axle. Ours also had a manual transmission and 4.11 rear diff. We'd raise the RPMs to 5k and dump the clutch. Top speed was only around 85 or 90mph, but it would get there quickly 😂

I had mine setup factory 2wd with the brand new V8 for awhile. Every time I dumped the clutch I just got tire smoke haha. Probably is from the longer wheelbase.

Great sound out on the finished exhaust. I have the basic system on my Plymouth TrailDuster. I used a long muffler like you used. Brand new it was a MagnaFlow # 12586. 2 1/2” in & out.

Grab some heat guards that go above large mufflers (attached to under body) many sizes from junk yard and trim to fit above front pipes and muffler.
You can also install thermal barrier under the cab area like u did in the dog house.

Great job. Even better price. One suggestion, the barn doors on the back, if the weatherstripping is not the best some fumes may come in the van. To fix this kick the tip out the side of the van just past the spring hanger

Thanks for the tip. Rear bumper and suspension will probably get changed out here soon so I may wait to find it’s final shape
