- I know that it might be a long shot finding a spring up that high on my property but I need the road for a few different reasons. I need to control the run off by putting different livestock ponds in. I hope that I can find a spring in the process but I also need the road for a fire break and access to the rest of the property.

Heath, I admire your tenacity and 'git 'er done' mentality! Don't mind the negative ninnys, you've done amazingly well in the short amount of time you've owned your land.
As to the wall tent comment, that is exactly the route I'm seriously considering when we buy our land next year! I'm a 50 year old woman with three adult kids and married to my best friend. I'll be the one cutting trees, developing the land and building our retirement home while my husband works to pay for it all, out of pocket and no debt. You inspire me, keep up the great work!

My wife and I live by the belief that challenging ourselves is the best way of life. For years we've talked about homesteading. Over the last year we began to seriously put plans together and have pointed our compass towards Idaho. Over a few months we've talked about trading our vehicles for older ones that I can work on myself. The conversation turned to the necessary heavy equipment that I could get for cheap and get into working condition. Then, several weeks ago, we had a conversation about water. We needed to come to agreement on what a property should have before we could be seriously interested. Following that conversation I found your video on the legality of digging your own well in Idaho. I started watching your videos from the beginning and I'm still almost two years behind. I just wanted to express to you what an inspiration you and your challenges have been to my wife and I. Watching your progress is our evening entertainment. We share it each night. When life down here tries to beat the dream out of me, watching your videos help me refresh. I appreciate your struggles, failures, successes, but most of all your enthusiasm for the challenge. As a Rancher, I completely understand how slow things move. Finding water is hard especially in the New Mexico desert. Some people will never understand how hard it is to be a rancher/ homesteader. It took my family over 6 years to build a 60x40 barn. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

Thank you for documenting this journey and posting it for us to watch. You have quickly become my favorite homesteader to follow. You and I would get along really well together. I get your logic and approach to everything you do. All the pessimists on here will never get what you are accomplishing because they don't look at life the same way. Just ignore them! I spent the last three years building our home with my own two hands from the ground up, while working to support my family. I only hired out about 10% of it because it was cheaper than doing it myself. The harassment I got from everyone was insane..."why are you taking so long?", "when are you going to be done?", "are you ever going to finish?" The world is full of people who are used to instant gratification and want everything now! You, however, are methodically thinking things through and planning for the future. Keep up the good work, and please continue to share!
Have you considered building the shop with a full bathroom and temporary kitchen to live there while building the house? A little more room than a 5th wheel for a family your size.... Also, have you explored the idea of rainwater harvesting? It is an awesome source for water if legal in your area. It's crazy how much rain you can harvest off a 2500 sq ft roof and a couple of buried cisterns and purification system can be way cheaper than a well.
The entire upstairs and part of the downstairs will be livable. We will live in the shop house for awhile as we build the other house. Thanks for watching!

Good for you! I'm planning on doing the same thing. My interest in wanting to do this is to be debt free, stay that way, grow my own food, be off grid, and live according to my own terms. Kudos my friend! Don't take the debt!

As someone else on this site noted, just because we followers of your journey remain quiet doesn't mean we're not here, fully supporting you. I think you are much admired for your persistence and stubborn streak. I'm sure your good nature doesn't hurt, either. And you have Cedar. Seems like you two have everything you need to make it just like King Elvis did - your way.
Someone else I knew and was fond of made his mark and achieved his dream because, like you, he knew his own mind, was stubborn and persistent, kept his course, never wavering, never quitting. And, as you have shown, you are not afraid of hard work.
By the by, one of my naysayers once said that meant I wasn't afraid to lay down right next to hard work and take a nap. I'm pretty sure that description doesn't apply to you. So keep going. Your goal is within sight.

We did it years ago!It always goes slower than you'd like, then something else will slow it down more! Just hang in there, keep 1 step at a time!It will come along, if it were easy everyone would do it!
I hope you find a productive spring. The spring box is the best way to go. Year round clear water supply. Mine slows down but never has gone dry. Still thinking to do rain catchment for some row crop irrigation which would save the spring water consumption. Absolutely love my spring box. No pumps, all gravity to my holding tank of 1,600 gallons then on down to the house. The spring is way up on the side of the mountain. So, I think you are on the right track finding yours. Just Keep looking......

RPR nothing negative here i just really enjoy your videos, keep plugging away i can feel your frustration but it will happen.
Positive outlook is a great thing, you have been tackling these projects with a good outlook as to it will get done in 1 light or another. I have learned a few things and you have confirmed a few things so far watching your adventure. I think your doing a good job, and to do it with no finance may be the harder way initially, but in the long run its definitely the best way. It's your land, do it as you please. The land will always be there. Besides that I think you are doing an excellent job. There's only one of you,so don't fret the small things if it's meant to be then, God has a way of getting things done. If I was a lot younger I would probably be your neighbor! I've been building my cabin for three years pal. Progress can be a slow grind. It's good that you take the time to let your family enjoy the place in between working. I know that can be a challenge when you're chomping at the bit to get things done. It's your life, live it your way, don't listen to the haters.

Love your channel and all your videos..drilling a well definitely adds a to the big expenses. But it's nice to have it done and over with..buy once, cry once, move on..that is my plan anyways..haha..love the comment about living in a tent and the rational wife who pulls you back down and keeps you centered..I can relate..I'm just amazed at your drive I wish I did all this in my late 20's but life has a way of giving us gifts when we're ready to take responsibility for them. Now I'm older and have much more patience, and know when it's time to back off, and time push through . I wish you nothing but the success, good bless.

You are pretty handy with a torch as we have seen making the DIY sawmill, can I suggest you build your own small drilling rig if unlucky at the top. You could rent your services to others locally once you are done with it or even explore locations closer to your buildings, Good luck.

I think that you are mindful enough to figure out how to do it all. Good luck, once again I don't think you should have a big mortgage as you never know what life deals you. I know from personal experience so what ever you can do with your own two hands is the best solution. I have no doubt you will find sources of water on your property. I think the real concern is seasonal water, costs of getting the water to your shop, winter? Your on the right track, it will happen!

You can find underground water anywhere by looking at type of soil on the surface, start digging a well until it reaches the aquifers underneath, its a good and clean source of water

Build a roof rain catchment system and bury it in the ground and buy a Burkey water filter. It obviously rains a lot up there. I watched a video on you tube of a fellow that built a 12x 16 roof corregated and run it into a big container in the ground. You have a hole digger so go for it. Good luck.

Dreams all take time to get from the vision to the reality. I agree with your no debt attitude it's what people all over the word do and the stress from debt and bills is not worth it. I know this well from my personal experience. Nothing beats the pride of doing something with your own hands.
Potable water from a spring locally would be nice. You could also cart water till you develop a local storage capacity. Instal a cistern as a link to your water supply network. Once you get roof space you can capture water. Hope the springs pan out for you. Be mindeful that removing the trees will open your land to erosion on the gradient you have to negotiate - in particular the winter thaw run off. Plant grasses as soon as you can to stabalize your topsoil - or cut the trees up into manageable limbs and lay them on the ground (dont burn them all) as this will act as the fundations for hugelkultur and places where your grasses can attach in an around. Your stock will be able to move around this fairly easy. It will be good if you can find a spring up higher on the land so that you can instal a header tank as a natural feed to your house and shed. Once you have water, to can begin your local living and be more productive cutting down the time you travel etc. Have fun.

I like your idea of spring water as it is the best my idea would be have several election points and feed into a large pond ( have the pond fenced off to keep your water clean and run out to watering points for cattle ), then into huge storage tanks at the bottom just above the house, all gravity fed big saving on pumps ect

wondering what were the large white flowers around 4:32 in the tape? and did I see wild roses as well? I so you might consider transplanting some down below. Wives love that, or so I've heard.
Also, just a thought. If there's a state or federal campsite near bye, you might consider talking to the local store owners about selling firewood bundles to the tourists. bundles big enough for an evening fire cost my family around $7-8 bucks one year when we were in Yosemite camping.If you could wholesale it to them for $3-5 bucks a bundle it might be a good use of all that firewood your clearing.

If you find a spring up there you could think about running a line down and using the hight for running a microhydro installation to generate electricity.
I am loving the idea of the road! Also I was wondering you can use this to your advantage. When you make zig zag roads. You could very easily filter/funnel the rainwater/snow melt to the base of your land 😍😍😍 you would have an abundance of water

no worries about somebody's arbitrary schedule, there'll be plenty of interesting things to show along the way. i'm looking forward to the little pond digs. i have a similar situation where we get a lot of nice runoff through the end of May and i'm planning to dig my farm pond in the late summer. seeing how you're doing it will help. have you thought about extending the filling season by putting in some natural permeable barriers to slow it down a bit, i'm thinking of doing that in my situation, maybe get another month of water turnover. anyway, good luck.

Spring road you can make it like mountain roads zig zag ( S ) put few flat lands you can use as you go up to the springs. opinion might help you with a less steep road. Great videos 👍🏼

This may not be possible and Mindy and Terrell may not be interested but if they have multiple springs and they allow you to "buy" one that is at a higher elevation than your house. You could then pipe it down and back up to a tank on your property. I have no idea if that would even be possible but thats actually how my town water system is set up. The spring is on the east side of the valley quite high up, they pipe it across the valley to the west side into tanks and then use gravity from the tanks to the houses. I have no idea why they did this but it works.

I dunno if it helps the potable water problem, but maybe you're looking at the cow pond thing the wrong way... That road zig-zagging up there is what you're missing. That whole dang mountain is draining right toward the house... A little bit of culvert and ditching along that road, and locating the water catchment down the hill a ways... DO you get what I'm laying down here? Jussayin.

You are awesome! Thank you for so much for how much you inspire me to be a better person! I am looking to buy a property as well. The best one I saw for $125,000 or less was a half acre $100,000 property in the mountains. I am wondering if I can get any suggestions from you if it is a good buy. It has a river running through it so it is two triangles and there are power lines in the back of the property which takes away ten feet on one side. I was getting solar panels to face where the power lines are which will provide power from about 1pm to 6pm. I am also thinking of filling up the river and have a pipe carry the water. hey red way to go, based on the 'goals' you've set for completion of your homestead...use critical path methodology; seriously, chart it all out youll be amazed how much stuff can happen concurrent while focusing on the gotta get this and that done before we get to that. the immediacy of those other 'fun stuff' 'things you want to accomplish ...ya got a pretty good handle on what's 'critical' from what I can see.
'Life Inside A Box' (youtube channel) had an awesome rain catchment system might be a good option for the budget.
I'm hoping rain catchment is a last resort...
imo the more trees you cut, the less water you get there :-)

Even if you have to tie 3 weak springs into a central water tank with the off flow is then use for a pond system. Is there a option for putting in a water tank on your hill and fillling it from the neighbors spring until you get a permanet set going?

Do you have access to any geology reports? Understanding the nature of the underlying strata will help understand likelyihood of water shed above the property?? Keep going - best of luck.... 😀
