  • Put the new backhoe to use and dug down further than I could get last year. I hit 15' and all of the sudden... Water starts running all over the place. I'm still going to try and get much deeper but this sure makes me feel like I'm on the right track.

    I saw a man die when he went into a trench without a trench wall and it collapsed. It took several hours to dig his body out . Never get into a trench above waist high without shoring

    I cannot begin to tell you how dangerous it is for you to be in a 15ft trench with seeping water. I cut trenches for a living and wouldn't dare climb into that without sloping the sides or putting in a trench box/shoring. About the ONLY time that would be safe to do without the above is if you're cutting through stable rock.

    Be careful when you down in there from the trench collapsing especially from the side where all the spoil is with all the extra weight pushing down on that side

    I'm guessing, that's water trapped in the loose backfill. It's easy for the water to get there. But has nowhere to go. We see it all the time in clay ground backfilled with sand.

    Start digging in the direction the water came from to see where it is coming from. Still hope you find a tapable point on the hill to have the water come to you without the need of a pump but worst case a direct drive solar pump to get the water to a tank at the top of the hill so every day you top off the tank and any extra runs down to the animals and garden.
    If you know anyone with a drone the middle of summer is one of the best times to do a fly over looking for the wrong type of plants in the area as they will generally be around water. Greener areas are another good sign to then investigate on the ground.
    Getting the water a distance is not that expensive for low volume movement as you can get 1,000 feet of 1/2 inch poly pipe for $100 then it is just digging the trench to below the frost line. A trash can or plastic barrel make a good spring box for seep collection as you can make large holes for bring in multiple collection fields into one then a single output with lots of room for sediment to collect.

      I said the exact same thing above... I cut trenches for a living and wouldn't dare go into a 15ft. trench seeping water with loose layers and zero sloping or shoring. That's a death-wish right there...

    Maybe you can jet a pipe with water pressure on it down adding pipe as you go. You could use your water tote to supply the water needed to jet it down. You just need water in the tote and a pump to pressurize the pipe.

    On your 6/3/17 video, you mention pushing the sandpoint in as far as you can -- before doing that you may want to take a hand auger (starting at the 15 foot you've dug here) and see the lithology of the soil first before pushing it as far as you can. If you can push it 10 feet down, for example, to a total depth of 25'... It may be clay at 25', in which case you won't get any water. Or, if you are pushing the sandpoint through clay, the clay may smear on the sandpoint and even if the screened section of the sandpoint is in sand, it may be ineffective at pumping water because smeared clay on the sandpoint won't allow water to pass through. One other note if you use the backhoe bucket to drive the sandpoint, have someone helping you to guide the sandpoint to ensure it goes in vertically. Using the bucket can be somewhat tricky and if you put it in at an angle there is a greater chance it pinches/breaks.
    I know you're trying to do this in a cost-effective manner, but an alternative to all this (albeit more expensive) is to hire a DPT (direct push technology) crew that can tell you the lithology of the soil and the depth at which your screen should sit.

    • @RedPoppyRanch
      @RedPoppyRanch  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great advice! I will probably continue to di for a few days and see what I can figure out. I won't send the sand point down until I am in gravel. Thanks for your comments.

    It appears that you hit a clay lens that in turn forms a perched water table. Would be interesting to see how this works out for you. Well drillers often look for this type of soil lens while drilling wells. Some drillers will stop drilling on top of this lens formation and try to draw down the water with a pump test. I always try to envision how this soil was deposited during land formation. Then use this data to find water.
    At least you know even at this shallow depth there is some water and it may pay to keep probing more to see,where good quality and quantity of water can be had.
    I like how you are evaluating the soil types and condition. In addition you are watch the topography to see how this will effect your chances of finding water. Keep us posted and have fun.

    I've driven six wells over the years with the deepest being forty feet. The last time I put a well in I rented a electric jack hammer that I made a jig to protect the pipe and pipe threads. I suspended the hammer on a block and tackle but you could use you bucket on the tractor to hold the hammer over the well pipe.
    I like what you are doing as it would offer a lower starting place from which to start driving the well point. I rub my point with a bar of soap to fill the gaps in the screen on the point. I really don't know if that helps keep the point screen clean or not but that is what I've done over the years.
    The most difficult well I put in was when I first used an auger to dig down twenty feet or so then I placed a point in the well and tried to drive it another twenty plus feet to good water. The issue was when I started to drive the well after auguring twenty feet the pipe flexed a little bit each time I hit the pipe during the drive process. In was hand driving with a weight. The Pipe would flex each time I struck it, thus making the process much more difficult. I did manage to get water for my uncle but the process was very difficult.

      What kind of pump do you use and are the ag wells or culinary?

    • @davidmicheletti6292
      @davidmicheletti6292 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red Poppy Ranch To be honest I purchased shallow well pumps at rummage sales for my uncles and my inlaws well. One was located in the basement and the other was beside a trailer for a cabin. My personal wells are four inch accept one at an out building that is 2 inch. The 2 inch wells pump failed and I just haven't taken the time to find another shallow well pump. Yes I'm too cheap to purchase a new pump. Besides it is very easy to rebuild a pump should it fail. A few hours of work and a quick paint job and your pump looks like new.
      For now I have a hand pump on the 2 inch for the kids to hand pump and as backup for drinking water. I'm a firm believer if possible have a hand pump if your in the country. In as much as we live on a lake water to flush with is just a short walk away during a power outage. So we can get along pumping drinking water.

      When dowsing is subjected to scientific tests, it fails. Although some dowsers claim success, this can be attributed to the underground water table being distributed relatively uniformly in certain areas.
