8/2/2024 searching how to change a lawn mower blade. Young men take to a shop. Old school saves money. Thank you for making this video 15 years ago. Still needed.
Of all the various different blade changing videos that I watched this was the only one that warned about not filling the air filter with oil. Such an important thing to mention. Congrats on the great video :)
@@angelinh.5774In order to change the blade, I put a bag under the cap on the tank (seen that method on another video). Also removed and stowed the plug lead. The bag worked fine, however, fuel started to drip from the carburettor. So I ended up draining the tank, pipe to carb, and carb bowl. The mower has always worked fine (also after changing the blade). Not sure why the leak occured; is it expected that fuel from the bowl would pass the diaphragm while the deck is on it's side (only)? The fuel leaked from somewhere on the carb, but did not flow into the foam air filter. No leaks evident on completion, fuel up and subsequent mowing.
I am a 52 yr old woman and still can't believe I was able to change my blade with your help. And we even have the same mower. I had that same clamp too but until now I did not know what it was. I had to use a rubber mallet to bound the wrench because I forgot to squeeze it. Thanks great video I saved some money.
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
That was one of the best blade removal videos I've seen. Your description of which lawnmowers can be tilted on their sides was very helpful -- and the first time I've heard it described as clearly, as well as your explanation as to why pull the whole spark plug, and not just remove the cap. Can't' wait to try the tip about clamping to remove the blade. Thanks.
I have watched other videos but this one worked best for me. The vise-grip trick works so much better than trying to stuff a hunk of wood in there. Thanks.
14 years later and still helping people out from all ranges of DIY. I usually do mechanic work on my car so I know my way around but good tip about the spark plug and was not aware it matters what direction to tip the mower based on the air filter.
Thank you! From Perth, Western Australia. As an old 61yo DIY-challenged idiot, your simple "things to watch out for" is MOST informative. Again, thanks! (I'll now get a new air filter for our Rover lawnmower!)
Just watch your video and I'm very impressed with how easy you make it look. But most of all what I liked is the fact that you put great emphasis on safety. Thank you for a great video.
Excellent! Was stripping down an old discarded mower today for its parts and got stuck on the blade removal part and now I know AND you have also taught me about the importance of leaning a mower on the correct side. Many thanks.
Thanks for sharing this video. I was trying to use the vise grips to hold the blade in place while using a wrench on the nut. Who'd thunk you could just clamp it on the side of the mower to stop the blade. Doh! Feeling a little silly now. Blade was replaced with ease. Much appreciated.
Brilliant - you not only showed how but what to know before you consider taking off a lawn mower blade. I've been tilting mine the wrong way all this time!
Thank you so much!!! Worked perfectly with changing my blade on my MTD 675 EX Briggs and Stratton Lawn Mower… Looking forward to the next cutting experience!!
I knew there had to be a smart way to keep the blade from turning, thanks very much for the instruction. I wish I had watched your video before I turned the mower over on the wrong side. Yeah, lots of oil to clean out of the carburetor now... Everything about the mower needs cleaning or replacing, but hey, it was free :) And thanks to videos like this, I am figuring out how to hopefully get it operating like a good grass cutting mower should. Happy Spring!
Your video was well done. I had the blade off in minutes (soaked the bolt with penetrating oil for an hour prior), removed the motor and am waiting on my replacement.
Weedeater Series 300 - use a plastic (sandwich bag will work) to fit tightened under the gas cap to keep gas from leaking out - tilt towards oil dipstick end (not air filter).
Thank you, Mark!! I came here to find out which way to tilt the mower when removing the blade and you answered my question in seconds!! THANK YOU!! 👍👍 Great video!! 😁
hahhaha...just great...i watched several videos before i found yours. the vise grips worked great. i had tried and tried with wood and just could never do it on this battery mower but your tip moves it to the top of the list...thanks again. clas
Thanks for this video.... It was very informative and totally helped me out with taking off my lawn mower blade.... You have made me a very happy woman today by sharing this instructional video. Thanks again....
Yours has got to be the easiest so far that I've been watching all day. Thank you so much. And using the vice grip was very smart. I'm going to do the same. I think I may have tilted my mower the wrong way tho. Hope not. Thx again.
Great Video! The only things I would recommend is if you decide to use a socket wrench to remove the lawn mower bolt use a 6 point socket to not damage/round off the bolt and use a little bit of anti-seize on the threads. The next time you decide to remove the bolt, the anti-seize will make the job a job a lot easier.
Thanks for this good vid. You hit on all the important points, and it was clear and concise. QUICK TIP: To ensure you don't mar the paint finish when using the vise grips, clip a piece of rubber off your handy-dandy too-patched-up bike tire tube and put it on the outside edge of the deck. I personally never have to worry about that because I've never owned a new one. Mine are always wreck-decks, lol.
That's great when your blade can be removed that easy. The mower I have to take apart now got some rust on it and the bolt is stuck completely. Not much I have succeeded so far to get it lose.
Very good demonstration. Before checking this out I'd already got the sponge air filter soaked in oil when turning the whole machine upside down, hey we are not all mechanics.
Great idea to clamp the vice grips to the mower to block the blade. I've been struggling for years holding one end of the blade and trying to loosen the bolt.
I actually have a bolens with the foam filter and Quattro engine and you want to tilt it with the dipstick down, the carburetor is on the other side plus the foam filter so they wont get oil in them if you till it that way, made that mistake early on.
I've got a problem removing the bolt as the head has been mutilated. What size is the bolt? I've been standing the mower on its front end with chocks to stop it rolling. Is there a risk of oil flowing where it shouldn't? And I don't mean on the ground. A good video and such a simple way to stop the blade revolving. Thanks.
I would maybe add a piece of cardboard or buffer between the painted mower decal & vice grips if a newer mower so as not to scratch, great video thanks!
Most people don't care if the paint on their mower is damaged. I know some very neurotic people with no lives care about that stuff but most people have more important things to worry about.
I have a 13 yr old Craftsman B&S Gold Series mower w the 6.75 hp motor. My air filter is a combination of foam and paper. Is it okay to tilt the mower with the muffler side down? I've got most of the gas out and a plastic sandwich bag under the gas cap. I desperately need to change the very dull blade. Thanks
Atco Viscount 19E - no bolt in center of blade - instead a flush hole - I think it is an Allen key (hex key) needed for flush blade fittings? Would be as well to know that there are many different bolts and fittings for a blade - easy if you can see a bolt but not if none visible
I tried to put the blade back on my 21" 140 Toro Recycler but I couldn't tighten it, it kept turning. I see there is a cog on the blade bolt, and there seem to be 2 slots in the shaft it goes onto. Do the cogs have to be placed into the slots in the shaft somehow?.or have I somehow ruined my lawnmower since I can't get the blade tight, it just keeps turning on the shaft and the shaft also keeps turning, as does the flywheel on top of the mower. I had hit something with the mower blade, and couldn't get it loose, but finally used a pipe on the wrench to get it off,.but now it just keeps turning when I try to tighten it back on and won't get tight.
any tips on how to remove the bolt if it does not turn to loosen it? i only have a socket not like your wrench, but im not sure if it would help if i get a wrench like yours. i tried hammering it no luck.
G'day mate I've got a Kawasaki FJ180 on my Ariens 21. The air filter is at the front of the engine. It has a paper air filter so do you think it will be ok to tip to the oil filler side.
I am trying to watch all of your videos! I want gloves like the black ones you are wearing! Where do you get those and what are they called? Thank you and I am learning a lot!
Do they sell adapters so that I can move the blade maybe ONE inch higher when I cut the grass? I already set the wheels to the maximum height but a little more would be better.
14 yrs later and still being viewed. Thank you, sir, from another happy viewer.
Right that's pretty dang good for this old of a post. He's got some points in here that nobody else provides about tipping your lawn mower over

Every way I tilt fuel leaks
What size socket wrench was that?
@@bugsy74 use a baggie over the hole and screw the gas cap back on. Or mow it out of gas.

The real helpful piece of info in the video is using the vice grips on the edge to act as a block so the blade can not turn. Amazing tip. Thanks.
Great video - some really important points I wouldn't have known: particularly about which way to tilt! Thanks for this!

It depends on the configuration

Woah - thanks for the tip - I have a quatro and I would've dumped oil into the carb! Thank-you!!
This was a great help. the mole grips a great tip. many thanks
Superb video!! This was very helpful. Saved me a lot of time. Thanks a Ton!!!
great video... all the little details make a big difference. thank you!

Great tip. Merci from France...
Good video especially tilting part. I messed up mine just by tilting it the wrong direction.
Thank uou for the video. Very informative and interesting. Is it ok to use an impact wrench?
Thank you for posting this helpful video.

Buuuut when putting the blade back on do you use anything like lock tight or just screw the bolt back in?
I tried this before watching this video, I was doing it all wrong. Thanks a ton
Thanks for your help! I got the blade off.
This helped me greatly. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much it really helped

Vice grips.. Genius! Thank you
I always wrap old rags around each end of the blade too and Wear welding gloves just in case. Good safety video though.
Thanks for the help, Dad.
Question, are some of the murray 22'' regular lawnmowers threaded different? As in the opposite of righty tighty, lefty loosey
Do you need add red or blue lock tite when you put on or just wrench it on tight as you can?

How about the craftsman ones , how does it need to be tilted?

Thank you sir! Surprisingly helpful for sure a seemingly easy procedure!
Happy father’s day!
thanks so much. I've been struggling to remove the blade on my mower, to no avail.
I suck at this stuff. Thanks for your help.
Helpful video. Wouldn't just using an Oil Change Pump Extractor and always tilting with carburetor up be safer?
No

which way do you tilt B&S with foam element on top held down by long screw?
such as 3.75 "Sprint" engine ?
Thank you. Very helpful iand great tips for doing it 'better' not just doing it right.
I had another part fall out that the blade screws into. How do I get it back on?
Thanks again, a couple years later!
