- I rescue a Gibson Les Paul Studio from the 90s. It needs more than just a setup. I am going FULL GEEK on it and removing paint, stains and battle scars. I hope Matt will enjoy his new guitar and I look forward to finally getting back On The Bench.

Those 90’s Studios are some of the best playing and sounding Gibsons ever made.
My absolute favorite years for the LP Studio.
Clean it up by all means, but the guitar's life is ingrained into those scratches, dings & modifications. All those gig memories being erased. I love hard worked guitars. They have a life, a backstory.

Just a little tip from a professional, the best way to solder AND de-solder stuff, is to add new solder to it.
That way you also don't completely burn things.

Couple of observations about Gibson nut removal - first, don't use a screwdriver, use a block of wood, it wont slip and gouge chunks out of your guitar and second, while common practice is to use only a small spot of glue to hold the nut, so it can be tapped out, Gibson in their wisdom, have used something like epoxy glue along the whole length of the nut on many of their guitars, making it almost impossible to remove the nut. Apparently they repair such nuts by milling the top off and gluing a fresh piece of nut material on top. With these nuts you are more likely to break the headstock than remove the nut by tapping. Instead you have to use a fine saw to cut a slot through the nut and then carefully collapse the two halves together with pliers. Even then you are likely to get shattered pieces of the nut stuck in the bottom of the nut slot. You can then spend many happy hours chipping these out with a fine chisel. Gibson - I hate you.
The screwdriver and hammer was a joke. A sharp blade and a little wiggle should be enough. If not, the wood block is correct

Great video but Wow, my heart was breaking. Nothing wrong with some wear showing on a loved Les Paul Studio. Just makes it more desirable in my book because it shows that it was good enough that someone wanted to play it. Clean and polish frets,,, check Remove dirt...Check...Fix broken parts....Check. beyond that is ruining a good guitar in my book. Still enjoyed the vid. Heading to pr 2.

Was gonna say "Do a Black Beauty build" but then thought u are most likely gonna pop the same PUs back in again, so there goes that idea...Gr8 stuff Andy...I subbed because of your mod series, but based on the Fender Bullet Mustang rather than the LP . Watching this in case I ever learn something useful in this regard.

seems to be quite nice, but electronics and hardware are all garbage. what would you change, when Body and Neck seem to be nice and the guitar plays well.

Nitro finish, they only use poly on Epiphones
They put ebony on a Studio model? I thought that was only reserved for Customs!
That’s the beauty of the 90s studios!
In the 90s the studios, standards and customs were all built the same. The main difference was cosmetics. The studio lites had different pickups.

If you mean "myth" sir, you are indeed correct!
How long is that Floyd pressed for though? On an old guitar that I have no idea of the history, it is ALWAYS best to take care. Why wouldn't you be extra careful?
@@TheGuitarGeek You said that if you cut the strings under tension, you would have some serious issues, and thats simply not true. Where not discusing how mutch time will the strings be of, whe are discussing the suddent change of tension.
Would you loosen the strings just in case? Yes why not, but the bottom line is its just fine not to.

I just bought a similar Les Paul Studio a month ago and had the same idea. I polished it up with compound polish but that’s it. Really interested to see how this turns out.

I'd love to see how to remove the lacquer on a guitar neck. I've got a MIM Hendrix Strat, and the whole neck is covered in a thick lacquer direct from the factory, which drives me insane. I'm sure I'd screw it up, but possibly not after watching you do it. Thanks again for doing this, Andy!

What Les Paul do you think is the best to restore to get a bang for your buck? I love Les Pauls and have a newer one which I got moded with some of the most recent electronics and high end pickups but have always wanted a good old vintage one that I could probably buy pretty cheap and get it restored.... Naked as the day she was born.

Can't wait for the rest of the series, Andy. There's a ton of strat style guitar refurb videos but not a Gibson LP. The Studio model makes a lot of sense as an upgrade platform, especially if you can get one for a really good price. Any experience with the 21 ratio locking Grover tuners? I'm thinking of upgrading from my Epi LP's 18 ratio non-locking Grovers. Naked as the day she was born!

that thing about cutting strings under tension is invalid. if that was the case every time you dive bombed in a guitar with a floating trem you would damage the truss rod

I haven’t bothered to watch your videos recently as I was beginning to find them a bit boring but I’ll certainly watch this series. I’m sure that lots of people enjoy demos of new gear etc but I prefer the repair and mod stuff . Although I’ll enjoy watching the Les Paul being torn apart and refurbished, if it was my guitar I’d have just gone for a good clean, (both bodywork and electrics), replacement of broken parts and a fret level but then it’s not my guitar. Looking forward to the next episode.

Melting the solder would go much quicker with flux, and more solder on the tip of the iron to aid heat transfer.

@@TheGuitarGeek I'm liking the Topnik RA stuff at the moment, it's meant for surface-mount but does just as well used as normal (i.e. with an iron, rather than re-flow) but there's very little residue to clean off afterwards. Also, it's worth getting decent solder with both lead and silver (Pb & Ag) for guitars as it is much less brittle than lead-free, it's what Tektronix used on their portable valve oscilloscopes in the fifties, tough as old boots.
Hard to get the Pb and Ag in Austria. The Topnik stuff is great though.

Are you gonna put on a new uncool gibson switch or will you with something cool and with more options like a Freeway 3x3-YY? Are the PUs splitable? You can do a really cool switchings with a Freeway switch.
I'm gonna save up some money and get a Freeway 3x3-05 and four PP-pots for my Epi SG to give it a really cool wiring.
The 90s LP-Studios had 492R and 498T AlNiCos, is that right? Maybe they changed that during the 90s.
