It sure is refreshing to hear a fine baritone-tenor voice like Will Downing's & can sing falsetto too . Most of pop, rock, soul history for the past 60 or so years has been dominated by high tenors, soprano female singers and falsettos
I used to love the Princes Trust gigs in the 80’s, especially because Mark King was always the ‘house band’ bass player. He played with the likes of Go West, Tony Hadley, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and at this gig with Swing Out Sister, John Farnham, Mica Paris and Will Downing........I can honestly say that his brilliant bass playing improved every single song by those performers, he is an incredible talent........I love the guy, have done since 1981.
Yep. I don't think any of these performers made better recordings of these songs than those from this gig, and that's down to LFT and George Martin. It was, to my then teenage ears, a complete revelation to hear how much of a difference they made to what were, in some cases, fairly tepid songs. Absolutely transformed them.
Mate- unnaturally talented, only just thinking that maybe a bit more of this- muted playing for other people could of made Him even better.... a la Louis J and Quincy etc- what do You reckon? I'm a massive Level Fan, shame Phil has turned out to be such a massive left wing bellend eh?
So nobody gonna mention how Will Downing’s performance absolutely smashed it. Wow his vocal and tone totally mesmerising 💯 King and the entire ensemble killed it too majestic performance of a classic song all round.
I THOUGHT I COULD LOVE YOU AND HOLD BACK THE DEPTH OF DESIRE I FEEL FOR YOU, BUT WATCHING YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF IN THIS VIDEO, THE WAY YOU BOUNCE YOUR BODY IN RHYTHM YOU DRIVE ME WILD!! I'M FEELING THINGS FOR YOU I NEVER FELT BEFORE. GOD SMILES WHEN YOU SING AND SO DO I.
Just so blown away! Mark and Mike's playing, Gary Husband's snare hits, Alan Murphy's rhythm groove along with the backing vocalists just elevate what Will Downing does on his Deniece William's cover. That last minute of this is just fantastic! David what a great version of this performance you found too; previous ones weren't of good enough sound quality to do this performance justice. Thank you for putting this up for everyone!
Michael Jayification I said I saw Level 42 play the Apollo in Harlem, not this show which is obviously not at the Apollo. We are actually one of the few white performers that do very well at the Apollo where if you can’t bring it they will let you know it. They have sold it out several different times. They got love in the streets of Harlem th-cam.com/video/PTV3D_VqOVA/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/PTV3D_VqOVA/w-d-xo.html
Yep. An absolutely brilliant performance by everyone on stage and this riff just tops it off. Mark King’s playing in this whole concert is something to behold but his timing, choice in doing this here (with apparently only two days to learn the whole set) is proper mind blowing. That Alembic helps, but what a riff!
I love Will Downing, and this tune and I love Mark King and Level 42.. Saw Level 42 back in the 80's, they opened for Tina Turner great show... This video is awesome, always loved watching him play those big Alembics.. I always wanted one, but they're very expensive....
Bit late to the party but George martin leading the orchestra!! L42 and George martin together. Remember wearing this out back then. So well recorded too.
i remember going to work in 89 listening to this song nice song

I can hear "Something About You" within this song.
You are not the only one! Both were combined in this performance:

Totally agree. What a bloody great house band!
Wow Mike Lindup solo is excellent
This is a perfect combination. And it's truly unique to see Level 42 playing American-style smooth jazz.
Mark and the Band at their Level Best!
👌
Always remember, when George Martin was asked why Level 42! as the House Band! George's reply was Because there So Good!!!!!!!
I remember that comment, could you ever get a greater accolade than that…….Sir George could recognise true talent !!
Two absolute greats on stage together.
I love it when Mark King plays with less slap; he really is a terrific bass player when he just plays pocket.
Will Downing 'knocked it out of the park'. What a performance!
that boy tone slick

Awesome. This and his version of "Wishing on a Star" are better than the originals in my opinion.

Mr Downing, Mr Downing I just felt like Pablo Escobar!!!!

This is a great song but Mark King's bass elevated it
