Congratulations on taking ownership of a DX100! They are still super cool, and the fact that it has strap buttons has always seemed to be an overlooked and underrated feature. If you really get into it, you might also check out the Casio CZ-101 if you haven't already. It came out around the same time as a competitor to the Yamaha DX line. The architecture is more simple, but the sounds can get analog-ish and fat. And...it has strap buttons! Only a pitch wheel though, no mod wheel, and less ideally placed for stand-up playing.
I have a Reface DX and you might have gotten the better deal getting a DX100 - the reface doesn't have a mod wheel and as you said you have to pay extra for the keytar additions (and even then, no neck gives me the heeby-jeebies). But then again it is easier to program the reface (allegedly) so it's horses for courses. Other points - for people who love the FM sound but don't want to spend the money, there's a plugin called Dexed you can use on your computer with a midi controller. Which is less fun, but maybe more fun than debt (is anything more fun that debt for trinkets?) - but again, horses for courses. EDIT: the little demo jam is very nice
If the internal battery dies, 8bitguy on youtube did a video on repairing the battery, its not hard to do. As for programing sound for the DX100 I use the Ipad and do the irig midi to Ipad connection and use Patch Base program on the Ipad. Much easier to design your own sound.
I have been eyeing the DX100. I currently have a Yamaha two operator FM synth. My dream synth is the DX7. Which has six operators. The DX100 is a four operator synth. It would be fun to 6, 4, and 2 operator synths all on the same stand. The Reface DX is a four operator synth. So it's not really a clone of the DX7. But it does get you FM sounds. There are enough vintage Yamaha FM synths that to me it seems like a better idea to go vintage. You can get a DX7 for around $600. So they aren't super expensive. Far too often synth companies want to bring back vintage stuff but don't quite nail it. It's pretty sad when Behringer makes a better TB-303 clone than Roland does at a better price. For the record the Behringer TD-3 is awesome if you like that kind of sound.
You gotta no neck keytar!? Yay! 🎹 🎸🤟 The Yamaha DX 100 is like a mini Yamaha DX7. FM synthesis is awesome. Programming this keytar is such a headache at first, but it can be fun after you figure out what the buttons do. Keytars are life🎹🎸🤟
I have a Yamaha CS-01 that falls under this 'kinda keytar' category. It's a small analog synth, but has strap buttons so you can wear it, and the pitch bend and mod wheel is in a position that allows you to use it with your left hand while wearing it.
Wow, I loved your video, instantly subscribed! I have a casio cz-101 and had a korg poly800mk2 back in the eighties (heck, not young), following your point of view both ARE keytars, sort of. And I loved your jam, thanks for this! Many kisses from Italy 💋
I had the Reface DX, CS, and the CP and kept the CS because it was easier to learn programming synth sound with it. Also the looper function is smarter on the CS than the DX. The advantage that the Reface series have is that you can store and find sound design on the Ipad thru a program called soundmondo or on Chrome browser of the computer by way of using the midi adapter to the computer. Nobody uses the cassette anymore to load factory bank or sound. I am excited for you on getting the DX100.
Have you tried any of the Casio cz series. The cz101 and cz 1000 can both be used as a keytar. I own a cz1000, and it has 4 octaves of full sized keys, which makes it too big in my opinion to use with a strap, although the buttons are fitted as standard. And another thing I dislike about the cz 1000 is the positioning of the pitch bend wheel which is closer than I would like to your body making it harder to use when playing with the strap.
Got a dx100 a few weeks back, the second one I have had. Have you tried programming your own sounds on it yet, fm synthesis is not nearly as hard as people make out.
Neat. The CBX-K1 also has those wheels and it seemed to suggest strap mode but there are too few controller buttons and no strap buttons. Agreed, kids should not play with too many knives. I can verify the microKEY's keys feel pretty good, too. That's why it's my current preferred 'organ' donor :3
If you have the manual there is a way to reprogram the startup message on the screen. I sold my dx100 over 20 years and can’t remember how to do it. It’s useful for having it display your name and zip code in case it ever gets stolen. It also has an input for a breath controller.
I've got a Volca FM and ordered a Vortex II... That more or less would make for a DX7 plus keytar... I own a DX-100, but the DX - 100 is the portable version of the DX-21 Keyboard, which is less powerful than the DX7. In my country, such keyboards sell for twice or three times the price I would get them in the U.S. That's why I ended up with the Korg Volca FM and I'm happy with it so far. About the Reface series: They are way over-priced. They started more or less priced and since then, their prices have soared! In my country these little units can't be easily found and if you find one, they are usually overpriced.
The DX100 has velocity sensitivity for the output of each operator. I use mine with a 88 key controller (it goes full scale). The velocity doesn't work on the keys of the DX100.
